Back To The 80s: President's Doted Wife

Chapter 1521: Chapter 1522: Mother and Daughter’s Private Conversation

Upon hearing that her mother-in-law was determined to attend Xiao Qi’s one-month-old banquet despite her leg inconvenience, Cheng Su said nothing, as she had anticipated it.

It was Mother Cheng who privately whispered to Cheng Su, ”Your mother-in-law is quite eager. I mean, if it were me, not being able to see my grandchild even though he’s already born, I’d feel uncomfortable too. So what if her leg isn’t convenient, she still has her hands, she’d definitely crawl her way over!”

Cheng Su chuckled quietly and teased her, ”How about Cheng Zhi finds a wife and gives you a grandson to play with?”

”Oh, stop it. How old is your brother? At most, he’s eighteen or nineteen. He can’t even support himself yet, how can he find a wife? And if he does, who’s going to support them? Don’t expect your dad and me; we haven’t accomplished much and are counting on him to take care of us when we’re old!” Mother Cheng retorted.

Cheng Su replied, ”Oh, you actually think about this? Aren’t there plenty of boys in the village getting married at eighteen or nineteen? I thought you were just like them, wanting to enjoy the blessings of having a son early, get the thrill of being a mother-in-law, and put on the airs of one too!”

Mother Cheng snorted lightly and said, ”They’re just ignorant.”

Cheng Su raised an eyebrow.

”If a boy achieves something on his own, what kind of wife couldn’t he find? The key is to be accomplished and ambitious, to make a lot of money. Once your brother earns money, how many good girls will be waiting for him to choose from! I’m really not in a hurry; he’s still so young, and a man should be dependable. As parents, we can then be at ease,” Mother Cheng had her own ideas and said, ”Right now, he’s just a big silly kid, still immature. If he really found a wife now, she’d be just as young as him. If she’s sensible, it’s fine, but if she’s not, wouldn’t I and your dad have to worry? If that’s the case, I’d rather he waits a few more years, grows more stable and mature, and then finds a wife to have a few free years for themselves.”

Mother Cheng’s words left Cheng Su quite surprised, since boys in the village traditionally married young, especially in this era. There are families where boys get married at sixteen.

Yet, here was Mother Cheng, a rural woman, having such a perspective—how could it not be astonishing?

”Mom, today you’ve really made me see you in a different light!” Cheng Su praised with a thumbs-up.

Mother Cheng, a bit pleased, said, ”Even though your mom didn’t study much and is an unrefined village woman, I’m not foolish. Of course, I understand the stakes. Never mind whether he has a job or earns any money, but if your brother married at such an age, both of them so immature, would I be enjoying the blessings of being a mother-in-law or would I just be serving another little debtor? I wouldn’t do it!”

Cheng Su burst into laughter and said, ”Remember these words, so you won’t keep complaining about our little brother not finding a wife and giving you a grandchild!”

Mother Cheng didn’t care, but unknowingly, Cheng Su’s words would later prove to be prophetic.

”However, I’m worried that once your mother-in-law sees Xiao Qi and becomes too fond of him, she won’t want to leave!” Mother Cheng finished talking about her son, and then voiced concerns about her in-laws’ behavior.

Cheng Su casually replied, ”We’ll see. If she doesn’t make things difficult for me, then everything will go well, and I’ll even ask her to help take care of him in the future.”

”Now that you’re a mother, you should temper your temper. If she cares so much about her grandson, then she’ll wholeheartedly help you with him, which is surely better than hiring some stranger as a nanny,” Mother Cheng advised.

”How we get along all depends on her. What I want is just mutual respect, otherwise, with daily disputes and mutual resentment, how could we live like that?” Cheng Su said.

Seeing her attitude, Mother Cheng said no more. Her daughter had her own firm views, but as long as she stayed reasonable and didn’t overstep, there wouldn’t be any gossip that could be used against her.
