Rebirth in the 90s: Her Counterattack and Redemption

Chapter 85: Chapter 72: Add a Ball

”I have no idea where Dad went, it was too chaotic with so many people around, didn’t even notice when he left!” Luo Zhenggang checked the time, it was nearly 5:30, and he stood up: ”I’ll go look for him.”

Luo Feng quickly stood up too: ”Dad, let Ye’er and me go look for him. If you go out, who knows who might stop you to chat for a long while!”

”Not bad, Feng’er is improving!” Luo Zhenggang nodded: ”You and Ye’er go check the Sand Ridge Land upfront, Grandpa might be there digging sweet potatoes.”

”No need to look, I’m back!” Grandpa Luo’s robust figure appeared at the doorway, smiling at Luo Ye: ”Did Little Ye’er wake up? Is the kang bed hard?”

”Grandpa, it’s not hard at all, very comfortable, I could even smell a faint scent of grass!” Luo Ye stepped forward and held onto Grandpa Luo’s arm: ”Grandpa, where have you been?”

”Guess, Little Ye’er?” Grandpa Luo smiled and gently rubbed his granddaughter’s head, a mysterious look on his face.

Luo Ye’s face suddenly bloomed like a brilliant sunflower: ”Grandpa, did you go to see the little fox-dog for me? Mom and Dad were just fooling me, Grandpa didn’t really give the puppy away, right?”

Grandpa Luo smiled and shook his head: ”Mom and Dad didn’t fool you, Grandpa really did give the little fox-dog away.”

Luo Ye’s face immediately fell: ”Grandpa, you went back on your word, you said you got two for someone and end up not getting any, when did Grandpa become such a big liar?”

”Ah, it’s hard to be a good person, and even harder to be a good grandpa!” Grandpa Luo sighed: ”Since you like the little fox-dog so much, I’ll just give the little Pekingese back to them and keep the fox-dog.”

”Pe...Pekingese?” Luo Ye’s downcast face immediately brightened like the fierce sun in June: ”Grandpa, could you... say that again, please?”

”Little Ye, you sure are strong, did Grandpa’s arms turn blue yet?” Grandpa Luo teased, deliberately rolling up his sleeve to check: ”It’s not purple yet, wonder what it will look like tonight.”

”Grandpa!” Luo Ye hugged her grandpa’s arm coquettishly, her little body twisting and turning, equal in cuteness to Dou Dou.

Wen Xin and Luo Feng had twitching corners of their mouths while Luo Zhenggang held his cheek as if his tooth ached, wondering what the staff at Wenxin Garden would think if they saw this behavior of Little Ye’er.

”Alright, stop shaking, if you keep this up, Grandpa’s old bones will fall apart by your shaking!” Grandpa petted Luo Ye’s little nose dotingly: ”Grandpa originally got two little fox-dogs for you from Uncle Feng, and a few days ago when I went up the mountain, I found Mr. Yu’s Pekingese had a litter of puppies, and there happened to be a snow-white one. I thought, Ye’er would definitely prefer such a fluffy, chubby little creature.

It turned out someone had already claimed the white Pekingese, Grandpa had Mr. Yu negotiate with them to see if they could wait for the next litter, but they didn’t want to wait. After much persuasion, they agreed to exchange the one Pekingese for two fox-dogs.”

”Grandpa, you’re the best, the very best!” There she goes again, twisting, Dou Dou curiously watching its little master; clearly, this demeanor of Ye’er was quite surprising to it, and it tried wagging its tiny butt and tail. Now Wen Xin and Luo Feng couldn’t hold their laughter anymore.

Luo Baoku teased with a chuckle: ”Ye’er, just now you seemed upset about Grandpa not keeping his word, didn’t you? And now he’s a good grandpa again?”

Luo Ye with a pleasing face poured water for her grandpa: ”Hehe... Grandpa, when can we bring the little Pekingese home?”

”Feng’er!” Grandpa Luo instructed his grandson: ”Go bring that little basket at the door inside.”

”I’ll go! I’ll go!” Luo Ye rushed to the door impatiently, lifting the lid of the little basket; a snow-white round ball was curled up in the soft wheat straw at the bottom of the basket, its little head buried in its paws, its belly puffing rhythmically as it slept sweetly.

Luo Ye’s heart melted inexplicably, such a cute little thing could evoke an involuntary compassion, Grandpa truly understood her thoughts, indeed, she preferred such fluffy, chubby little creatures.

”Ye’er, don’t enjoy it alone, bring it in so Mom can see too!” Wen Xin’s gentle voice called out.

”Mom, what’s the rush, it’s coming in now.”

”This little thing is so beautiful and cute, definitely more endearing than a little Pomeranian!” Wen Xin absolutely adored the fluffy little white ball.

”Its breed is Pekingese, round like a ball, how about naming it ’Lion Ball’?.” Luo Ye carefully touched the Pekingese’s fuzzy little head, afraid to wake it from its sweet dream.

Luo Zhenggang glanced at the white ball: ”Lion Ball? Doesn’t that sound a bit like ’Shit Ball’?”

”Pfft!”

”Pfft!”

Wen Xin and Luo Feng burst into laughter simultaneously; such a cute snowy creature, and only Luo Zhenggang could think of a homophone for it.

Luo Ye was speechless as she looked at her dearest dad and finally sighed, ”If I say ’lion,’ will you hear ’lice’?”

Luo Zhenggang waved his hand carelessly, ”Whatever, you can call it ’Poop Ball’ if you like!”

Luo Ye pouted, ”Let’s just stick with ’Song Qiu.’ With your ’Poop Ball,’ I’m psychologically scarred!”

”Indeed, Song Qiu sounds pleasant, and ’Lion Ball’ isn’t bad either. Call it whatever you like.” Wen Xin turned toward Luo Baoku, ”Dad, how long have we had the little Pekingese? What should we feed him?”

”Just 46 days exactly. Normally, after a full month, we could bring him home. Ye’er hasn’t come yet, so the little one stayed with his mother and got a few extra days of milk.

Within four months, you can feed him some corn porridge, rice, vegetables, and beef soup, among other things.” Luo Baoku said as he pulled out a paper. ”This is from Mr. Yu. He said we can follow the method here to make something the little one would like to eat to keep his fur shiny and body healthy.”

”That’s good, it all sounds simple enough. I’ll make something each meal; I’ll copy this list and take it back!” Wen Xin said, handing the paper to Luo Ye: ”Ye’er, take a look, can you make these? If not, mom will teach you tonight.”

The list detailed various ways to cook compound porridge, Luo Ye rolled her eyes in complaint: ”Mom underestimates me, have you forgotten who cooks the meals every weekend?”

Dou Dou sneakily nibbled at Song Qiu when no one was paying attention. The little furry Song Qiu’s head perked up, and after seeing Dou Dou clearly, it flinched and scurried to the side of the basket, whining a string of noises.

”Little Songqiu, did you grow a mouse’s courage? Afraid of Dou Dou? Let me tell you, he is your big brother, he will protect you!” Luo Ye held the furry Little Songqiu in one hand, chattering away, and with her other hand, she began to scold Dou Dou, ”From now on, you must act like a big brother, protect Little Songqiu, got it?”

”Chirp chirp...” Dou Dou nodded its little head. It also liked this fluffy white ball, and it was very careful just now to wake Song Qiu without hurting it.

After Luo Ye put Song Qiu down, the little creature, scared of the unfamiliar environment, started dashing without direction. Luo Ye laughed heartily, ”Dad, mom, look, when Little Songqiu is on the ground, you can’t even see its legs—it just looks like a round ball wriggling.”

”Ye’er!” Luo Feng, who had been chatting with Grandpa, looked at Luo Ye, ”Grandpa said that Mr. Yu knows martial arts and suggested I learn from him over the holidays. Do you want to come?”

”Of course!” Luo Ye’s eyes lit up. ”Grandpa, what kind of martial arts does Grandpa Yu practice? Is it very powerful?”

”Mr. Yu practices Yu Family Boxing, a tradition passed down from his ancestors. As for how powerful, let me give you an example. Last month, Liu Jiping went to a market and encountered three robbers on the road. Mr. Yu also happened to be going to the market—he subdued those three men with just a few punches, and they are still in the police station.”

”I’ve never heard of Mr. Yu before; did he just move here?” Luo Ye looked slightly worried at Grandpa: ”When those three get out, will they gather others and cause trouble? Is it safe for Mr. Yu living alone up in the mountains?”

”Mr. Yu bought that mountain land this spring and moved here. He’s a good person. I often meet him at Sand Ridge Land when I go there to tend the sweet potatoes, and we’ve become familiar through frequent interactions. His hometown is West River, but I’m not sure why he moved here. As for safety, you’ll stop worrying once you see his skills.”

Luo Ye suddenly shouted excitedly, ”Grandpa, look, Little Songqiu is licking my hand! It knows I like it!”

”Yes, animals know who’s good and who’s bad! Zhenggang...” Grandpa Luo turned to look at Luo Zhenggang: ”When you went to get the little Pekingese just now, you bumped into your third sister, and she reported you to me. But I’m really relieved. All these years, you’ve been carrying burdens that aren’t yours to bear, and Dad has always been worried about your future being ruined by your nature. Being overly generous isn’t good, even when it comes to family!”

”Dad...” Luo Zhenggang didn’t know what to say for a moment.

Grandpa Luo waved his hand, ”In the future, try not to interfere too much in your brothers’ and sisters’ matters, help where you can and don’t force yourself where you can’t. I’m their father, and all my children are equally important to me. I don’t want my youngest son to ruin his family and future for his siblings.

Know why I’m so biased towards Ye’er? Because from the moment we spoke on the phone, I’ve noticed that Ye’er has changed, she has really become understanding. Feng’er should learn from Ye’er. A person can be kind but should never be overgenerous, there’s a clear distinction between being kind and being overly generous!”

Luo Ye admired her grandfather, whose insight was penetrating indeed. In her past life, Dad’s mistake was not listening to Grandpa’s advice, or perhaps he misunderstood Grandpa’s intentions.

Luo Feng nodded, ”Grandpa, I acknowledge my flaws, and I will try my best to change and develop the ability to protect Ye’er soon.”

”And you, Zhenggang?” Grandpa Luo looked at his son.

Luo Zhenggang breathed a sigh of relief, ”I’ll listen to Dad, I’ve decided to let go. I’m not really overly generous; when sisters-in-law and sisters thought about arranging work, I didn’t push myself forward!”

Luo Ye twitched the corners of her lips; in front of Grandpa, Dad was like a child who liked to argue his case, maybe it was a kind of inherent dependency.

”Good, Dad’s waiting to see your actions!” Luo Baoku looked at Wen Xin, ”Wen Xin, it’s your good fortune to be married to Zhenggang for ten lifetimes. The Luo family has wronged you in many ways, don’t take it to heart.”

”Dad, we are a family, there’s no such thing as someone wronging someone. It’s my fortune to marry into the Luo family; I’m quite content!”
