Rebirth in the 90s: Her Counterattack and Redemption

Chapter 80: Chapter 69: Rites Cannot Be Abandoned

”Mom, then I won’t help you, I’m off to pick strawberries with Grandpa!” Seeing that Mom was mostly making cold dishes and had brought ready-made cooked food from the market, Ye’er decided not to insist on helping any longer. She really didn’t enjoy doing all that chopping and mixing.

”Go ahead!” Wen Xin casually took the large tomato back from Ye’er’s hand: ”We’ll eat soon, so better not have any now. Wash the strawberries when you get back and eat them then, okay?”

”Mom, why are you like this? Have I turned back into a three-year-old as soon as I get to Grandpa’s?” Ye’er protested discontentedly.

”I’m just used to it. Whenever you went to Grandpa’s place, you always turned into a little wild child and didn’t pay attention, haha...” Wen Xin apologetically patted her daughter’s head: ”Okay, don’t be angry. Isn’t Mom doing this for your own good? Eating such a big tomato now, how will you have room for dinner?”

”Either way, it’s always Mom’s reasoning that wins!” Ye’er pouted and walked out, ”Chirp chirp...” Just as Ye’er stepped out of the main house, Dou Dou quickly ran over to land on her shoulder, its tiny voice oozing an indescribable grievance.

”Silly thing! Silly thing...” Honghong mimicked in a strange tone over and over again.

”You little thing, why do you always bully Dou Dou?” Ye’er picked up a small stick and poked Honghong, which was hanging under the eaves, and she made a fist gesture towards it.

Honghong lifted its lovely tiny head proudly, flapping its wings and looking askance at Ye’er and Dou Dou: ”Silly thing! Silly thing! Bring the red envelope!”

”Bad creature, just wait, I’ll get Grandpa to scold you!” Ye’er looked around for Grandpa’s figure. They had agreed to pick strawberries together; he wouldn’t have gone off on his own, would he?

Luo Zhenggang came out from the side room and saw his daughter turning her head this way and that in the yard, chuckling as he instructed: ”Ye’er, go with your brother to invite your big uncle and second uncle over for dinner!”

”Dad, have you seen Grandpa? Grandpa was talking to Xiao Xiao just now, I went inside for a moment, and now I can’t find him!”

Luo Zhenggang shook his head: ”I haven’t seen him. Feng’er, Uncle Wang, and I were busy sorting stuff out; probably he went to pick strawberries, right?” Every time they came back, the old man would first get the food ready and then stick close to his son and grandson, not leaving their side.

Ye’er sulked: ”We had agreed to go together!”

”Grandpa probably didn’t want you to get sunburned!” Seeing Xiao Wang standing beside him looking constrained after coming out, Luo Zhenggang smiled warmly: ”Xiao Wang, driving all this way must be tiring. Go lie down in the side room and rest for a bit, we’ll call you for dinner.”

”Mayor, I’m not tired!” Xiao Wang chuckled honestly. The Mayor was supposed to drive home by himself, but how could he not fulfill his duty?

Luo Zhenggang patted Xiao Wang: ”Then as you wish, just make yourself at home!”

”Mayor, I will!” Xiao Wang’s face blushed slightly with excitement. Seeing Ye’er smiling at him, his face turned from red to purple in a ”whoosh.”

Luo Feng came out of the side room carrying several gift bags, calling out to Ye’er: ”Ye’er, let’s go!”

”Give me one!” Ye’er took a gift bag from Luo Feng’s hand and headed out, her head bowed. She always felt there was something she couldn’t quite remember at the edge of her mind, a feeling that had suddenly come to her while Dad was talking to Xiao Wang.

”I remember now!” Just a few steps outside the courtyard gate, Ye’er suddenly shouted out in excitement.

Luo Feng was startled and looked at his sister puzzledly: ”Remember what?” Just now he wanted to say something, but seeing his sister frowning deep in thought, he didn’t dare to interrupt.

”Brother, let’s go back to Grandpa’s house first, and we’ll invite big uncle and second uncle later!” Ye’er pulled Luo Feng as they ran back towards Grandpa’s house.

”How come you’re back...”

Ye’er interrupted Luo Zhenggang: ”Dad, there’s something I need to tell you!” She quickly pulled her father to the corner of the courtyard: ”Uncle Wang’s hometown must be Yongquan Village, which is about five miles from here. I just remembered.”

”How do you know that?” Luo Zhenggang’s brow furrowed. How would his daughter know this?

”Last time, Dad, you didn’t tell me about Mayor Huang’s issue, so I went to Uncle Song. Considering my life-saving favor for Brother Song Meng, Uncle Song told me the truth.

I don’t want Dad to have such people around him that might cause trouble for Dad, so I asked Uncle Song to check the family backgrounds of Uncle Huang and Uncle Wang for me!” She was ready to extend her reach into Dad’s work, so she knew the truth plainly.

”Ye’er, you’re still a child, Dad doesn’t want you to worry too much about these things, it’s not good for you!” Luo Zhenggang’s eyebrows twisted into a Sichuan character shape.

Ye’er’s expression turned more serious than ever: ”Dad, don’t always treat me like a child. Some things that Dad feels inconvenient to tell others, you can tell Ye’er. If you don’t believe me, just try and see if I can really help Dad.”
