Rebirth in the 90s: Her Counterattack and Redemption

Chapter 76: Chapter 66: Shooting Yourself in the Foot_2

Sophomore Class 2’s farewell class meeting was in full swing, with desks arranged in a circle and performances heating up. But the show everyone had been looking forward to for two days now seemed secondary. The focus had shifted entirely onto Luo Ye, Ying Nuo, and Tang Luo.

When the three walked into the classroom, many students mistook Luo Ye as just a friend of Tang Luo and Ying Nuo until they heard them address her by name. Only then did they realize that the prettiest one was actually the usually unremarkable and scruffy girl.

If someone has always been pretty, people get used to it and it’s no big deal. But the stark contrast between Luo Ye’s past and present image sparked everyone’s curiosity.

Teacher Yang, too, wore a wry smile. It wasn’t just the students he had surprised; he too was taken aback by Luo Ye. He couldn’t help but think to himself how this child kept everyone in the dark about her appearance until the very last day.

However, recalling Luo Ye’s performance in recent months, Teacher Yang began to feel some confidence in her choice of the sciences. Perhaps he had been too hasty in his judgment.

Wang Shanshan was in a foul mood. As the class’s academic and cultural affair representative, she was the most dazzling pearl among the girls. But today, she noticed that Wang Feng had stolen several glances at Luo Ye.

Alright, she admitted it. She too felt the impulse to glance over. After all, Luo, Ying, and Tang’s new transformation was indeed stunning. It was normal for girls to envy and boys to admire, but on this last day, after she had made herself up, the boy she liked hadn’t looked at her once. The feeling was simply terrible.

Yang Yan noticed Wang Shanshan’s slump and took some perverse pleasure from it. Leaning over, she whispered in Wang Shanshan’s ear, ”Do you think Luo Ye is deliberately using this to attract the boys?”

”Don’t talk nonsense!” Wang Shanshan glared at Yang Yan. ”Regardless, we are all classmates in the end.”

”Luo Ye, why don’t you perform a number?” Yang Yan suddenly called out loudly. Luo Ye’s performances in music class always cheered everyone up. Since she had attracted everyone’s attention, why not keep it going? She believed everyone loved not just watching a beauty, but also listening to one sing.

As for the consequences after the song, Yang Yan was very much looking forward to them.

As Yang Yan’s voice faded, the expressions of her classmates brightened. They were all classmates, not of an age to forget easily. Luo Ye’s tiny, mosquito-like singing voice just didn’t seem to fit her current image.

Ying Nuo quickly stood up: ”I’ll do it, Luoluo isn’t feeling well today!”

”Luo Ye seems to be speaking just fine. Ying Nuo, we can’t do things like this. We’re about to say goodbye; it’s only right to perform a piece, isn’t it?” Yang Yan obviously had no intention of letting Luo Ye off the hook.

Seeing Ying Nuo trying to argue, Luo Ye waved her off and stood up, ”Sure, I can perform something, but since Yang Yan suggested it, Yang Yan should sing first. Give me some time to prepare, right?”

Yang Yan was taken aback, forcing a smile to her face, ”I... I think it’s better if Wang Shanshan performs my piece. She’s the cultural affair representative. It’s our final farewell; I believe everyone would love to hear Shanshan sing another song!”

”Wang Shanshan will sing her own piece. Yang Yan, we’re classmates and might not be in the same class in the future. You wouldn’t want to deprive us of this parting gift, right?” Luo Ye began leading a round of applause, teasingly implying: Always targeting her, did they think she was a pushover?

”Clap, clap, clap...”

Everyone was at an age where they loved to engage in fun, and they were all very cooperative.

Yang Yan felt like she had shot herself in the foot; her perception of Luo Ye still stuck in the past. Now her plot had backfired.

”Yang Yan, Luo Ye needs to prepare. Why don’t you go first?”

”That’s right, that’s right!”

”...”

The teasing from her classmates made Yang Yan flush with embarrassment. She looked to Wang Shanshan for help. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to perform, but what could she do? Sing? With her tone deafness, she could be described as completely off-key. Do a crosstalk? She couldn’t. Sketch comedy? No idea. Rhythmic storytelling? Clueless... She listed the options, realizing she couldn’t possibly just recite a text from class, could she?

Wang Shanshan sighed lightly and stood up, ”Luo Ye, Yang Yan really isn’t good at this sort of thing. Let me sub in for her. If Luo Ye doesn’t want to perform, someone else can take her place!”

Luo Ye nodded with a smile, ”Please.”

”Here’s a song, ’Childhood’, for everyone.”

”By the pond, the banyan tree where cicadas cry out the summer heat, and on the edge, the swing with only butterflies resting upon...”

Wang Shanshan’s voice was deep with a hint of huskiness. The way she sang the song brought out a unique feeling, especially on this day of parting.

”Clap, clap, clap...”

This applause was much more vigorous, with some classmates even shouting, ”One more song.”

Wang Shanshan smiled sweetly, ”Another song is no problem, but let’s wait a bit. Now it’s Luo Ye’s turn!” She looked at Luo Ye. ”You can have someone else take your place.”

Luo Ye stood up with a smile, ”Everyone thinks I’ll have Nuonuo sub for me, right? But I’ve decided to embarrass myself. My future isn’t a dream. Believe me, none of our futures are dreams.”

”Are you like me, head bowed under the sun, silently working hard and sweating, are you like me, even when faced with coldness, not giving up the life you want...”

Amidst everyone’s astonished gazes, Luo Ye’s clear, resonant voice sounded, matching the original singer’s vocal quality without any hint of inferiority. Yang Yan watched Luo Ye with a complex expression. Auntie, how could she possibly compete with that?

Nu’an’s first watch has arrived, a special thanks to ’Flower Shears Moon’ for the reward, and a heartfelt thanks to Pink for Nuan, as well as all the subscribers. Love you all.
