The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

Iris did not touch the bindings again until she understood the wire.

The thin metal line disappeared through a drilled opening beside the iron ring and ran somewhere inside the wall. At first glance, it looked simple enough to cut. That was exactly what worried her. Whoever had built the restraint had expected frightened people to pull against it, expected rescuers to reach for the obvious knot, and expected someone eventually to decide that cutting a single wire was safer than understanding where it went.

She lowered herself onto one knee and brought the lantern closer without letting the flame heat the metal.

”Do not move your hands,” she told Lysa.

Lysa gave the smallest nod.

Galahad remained several feet away so she would not feel surrounded. His sword was sheathed now, but one hand stayed near the hilt. Darius had taken position outside the doorway, watching the corridor in both directions while Kael stood just inside the room, close enough to help but far enough not to interfere with Iris.

The room was warmer than the cistern had been, though not unbearably so. It smelled of old sweat, blood, damp cloth, and something bitter Kael could not identify. There were no windows, only the door and a narrow vent high in the wall. A clay cup sat on the floor beside Lysa, empty. Another had broken near the opposite corner. There was no bed, only folded canvas beneath her and a blanket that looked as though it had been thrown in days ago and never replaced.

Kael looked toward the bindings.

The System responded only after he focused directly on them.

[Mechanical Analysis]

Primary wrist restraint: iron

Secondary trigger: tension wire

Wire route: internal wall channel

Trigger destination: unresolved

Likely functions: alarm / mechanical release / remote signal

Recommendation: isolate tension before severing

Kael looked toward Iris. ”The wire is under tension. Don’t cut it while it’s pulling.”

She nodded once.

”I know.”

Of course she did.

Kael smiled faintly despite the situation.

Galahad noticed. ”Something useful?”

”The wire probably has to be slack before it is cut. The System cannot tell me where it ends.”

”Enough.”

Iris slid the point of her knife beneath the metal line and lifted it slightly. The wire resisted. She followed it with her eyes to the wall, then noticed a tiny hook beneath the restraint ring.

”There.”

Galahad leaned forward.

Iris did not explain until she had secured the wire around the handle of a second knife.

”It is not attached directly to her bindings. It is attached to the ring. Pulling the restraint rotates the ring. Rotation pulls the wire.”

”So breaking the chain triggers it,” Kael said.

”Yes.”

Lysa’s lips moved.

”Did.”

Everyone looked toward her.

Her voice was barely more than air.

Galahad lowered himself slightly. ”You pulled it before?”

Lysa nodded.

”What happened?”

She swallowed.

”Bell.”

Darius looked down the corridor.

”How long ago?”

Lysa’s eyes lost focus for a second.

”Don’t know.”

Galahad did not press.

Iris understood enough.

She wedged the second knife beneath the trigger ring, forcing the metal to remain in its current position. Then she loosened the actual wrist restraint separately, working one pin at a time instead of cutting through the chain.

Minutes passed.

Nobody rushed her.

That was difficult.

Kael could feel the search window disappearing. He could feel the Caldera beneath them, the distant vibration passing through the worked walls, and the knowledge that Sera, Milo, two healers, Derren, Tovin, and the wounded extraction group were already moving east without them.

But none of that made Iris’s hands move faster.

Fast hands made mistakes.

The first restraint opened.

Lysa flinched when the iron came away from her swollen wrist.

Iris caught her hand before it dropped.

”Other one.”

Lysa’s left wrist was worse. The metal had rubbed through the skin in several places, and dried blood marked the inside of the cuff. Iris had to work around it carefully.

Kael looked at Galahad.

”We need to get her back to the cistern.”

Galahad nodded. ”If she can travel.”

Lysa heard.

”I can.”

Her voice was stronger that time.

Not strong.

Stronger.

Galahad looked at her legs.

Kael followed his gaze.

Her right ankle was swollen beneath torn cloth.

Probably not.

Galahad asked, ”Can you stand?”

”Yes.”

Iris looked at her.

Lysa looked back.

Iris finished opening the second restraint, then said, ”We’ll test that.”

No judgment.

No argument.

When both cuffs were removed, Lysa tried to push herself upright.

Her arms shook immediately.

Kael moved instinctively.

She recoiled.

He stopped.

That reaction mattered.

Galahad saw it too.

”Easy,” he said. ”No one touches you unless you agree.”

Lysa stared at Kael for a moment.

Then slowly extended one hand.

Kael took it.

Her fingers were cold despite the heat.

Too cold.

He helped her rise while Iris supported the other side.

Lysa got one foot beneath herself.

Then the injured ankle took weight.

Her knee folded.

Kael caught her under the arm before she hit the floor.

She gasped through clenched teeth.

Galahad’s expression tightened.

”We carry her.”

”No.”

Lysa tried to straighten.

Her body disagreed.

Iris looked at her ankle.

”You cannot walk.”

”I can.”

”You just demonstrated otherwise.”

Lysa glared at her.

Iris did not care.

Kael almost smiled again.

Lysa noticed.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

Her eyes narrowed.

”Don’t.”

Kael stopped smiling.

”Sorry.”

For some reason, that seemed to make her trust him slightly more.

Darius looked down the corridor again.

”We need to move.”

Galahad nodded. ”Can we make a carry?”

There was no litter here.

No hauling frame.

Nothing except canvas, blanket, restraints, and two narrow wooden boards leaning against the far wall.

Iris looked at the boards.

Then at Darius.

”Those.”

He brought them over.

Galahad unfolded the blanket.

Within minutes, they had something rough but usable: two boards beneath a folded canvas sling, bound together using the leather from the discarded restraints and an extra strap from Iris’s pack.

Lysa watched.

”You do that often?”

Galahad looked at her.

”More often today than I would like.”

She gave him the smallest expression that might have become a laugh under different circumstances.

Kael noticed.

Good.

Still there.

While Darius tested the improvised litter, Kael crouched near the wall and looked at the room again.

No obvious belongings.

No weapon.

No pack.

But a small dark object lay near the corner where Lysa had been sitting.

He reached for it.

The System responded before his fingers closed.

[Object Analysis]

Metal fragment

Low residual magical energy

Surface contamination: blood / mineral ash

Kael picked it up.

A broken piece of something circular.

Not a badge.

Too thick.

A ring perhaps.

Lysa saw it.

Her expression changed immediately.

”Leave it.”

Kael stopped.

”Why?”

She looked toward the doorway.

Then toward the wall.

”Not mine.”

Galahad moved closer. ”Whose?”

Lysa said nothing.

The answer had frightened her.

That was enough.

Kael placed the fragment exactly where he had found it.

No pocketing everything because it might become evidence.

Not if the person they were rescuing was telling him not to touch something she feared.

Galahad asked, ”Dangerous?”

Lysa nodded.

”How?”

A long pause.

”Don’t know.”

Fair.

They left it.

Iris finally severed the alarm wire only after securing both sides. Nothing rang. Nothing released. No hidden mechanism activated.

She remained crouched for several seconds afterward.

Then exhaled.

”Clear.”

Galahad looked toward the corridor.

”Then we leave.”

Lysa spoke before they lifted her.

”Wait.”

Everyone stopped.

She looked toward Darius.

Not Kael.

Not Galahad.

Darius.

”You’re Imperial.”

Darius’s expression did not change. ”Yes.”

Her eyes moved toward Kael.

”And him.”

Kael answered himself. ”Prince Kael Asterion.”

Lysa stared.

Long enough to become uncomfortable.

Then she looked at Galahad’s Guild insignia.

”You came together?”

”Yes,” Galahad said.

Her expression became confused.

”Why?”

Galahad understood the question differently than Kael first did.

”Because you disappeared.”

Lysa looked at him.

Galahad continued, ”Your party took a Guild mission and did not return. The search escalated.”

Her eyes filled again.

She looked away.

”Rellan.”

Galahad’s voice softened. ”We found him.”

Lysa stopped breathing for a moment.

Kael saw the hope arrive before the fear.

”Alive?”

Nobody rushed to answer.

Galahad did.

”No.”

The hope disappeared.

Lysa closed her eyes.

Her face did not collapse.

There was no scream.

No dramatic reaction.

She simply sat there while something inside her seemed to fold.

Kael looked away.

Darius did too.

Iris stayed close enough that if Lysa lost balance, she could catch her without making it obvious.

After a while, Lysa asked, ”Where?”

”On the route above.”

”How?”

”We don’t know everything yet.”

That was careful.

Honest.

Lysa opened her eyes.

”Tovin?”

”Alive.”

Her head snapped toward him.

”Alive?”

”Yes.”

The relief hit harder than the grief had.

She covered her mouth with one shaking hand.

”Tovin got out?”

”We found him in a lower camp. He is badly injured.”

”But alive.”

”Yes.”

Lysa started crying then.

Quietly.

No sound except uneven breathing.

Galahad let her.

No one filled the room with words.

Eventually she wiped her face with the back of one hand.

”Derren?”

Kael looked toward Galahad.

Interesting.

She knew Derren had disappeared too.

Galahad answered.

”Alive. We found him before Tovin.”

Lysa nodded.

She was putting pieces together.

Kael could see it.

Then she looked toward the corridor again.

”You need to leave.”

Galahad’s attention sharpened. ”Why?”

”Because they come back.”

”Who?”

Lysa’s fear returned.

”Men.”

”Which men?”

”I don’t know names.”

”What did they look like?”

She shook her head.

”Different.”

Galahad crouched again.

”Different how?”

”Some armor. Some robes. Some workers.”

That complicated things.

”Same symbol?”

Lysa stared at him.

”What symbol?”

Galahad did not supply one.

Good.

Instead, he asked, ”Did they identify themselves?”

”No.”

”Did they tell you why they took you?”

Lysa swallowed.

”They asked questions first.”

”What questions?”

”Guild.”

Kael frowned.

”About the Guild?”

She nodded.

Galahad’s expression changed.

”What did they want to know?”

”How many people registered. Who ran it. How many strong adventurers. Whether House soldiers worked with it.”

That was not what Kael expected.

Neither was it what Galahad expected.

Darius’s gaze sharpened.

”Did they ask about Kael?”

Lysa looked toward him.

”Not name.”

”What did they ask?”

”Who owns the Guild.”

Kael felt something settle coldly in his chest.

Galahad remained calm.

”What did you tell them?”

”Blackwood.”

”Anything else?”

”No.”

”Why were you taken deeper?”

Lysa looked down at her wrists.

”They said we saw too much.”

”What?”

”Crates.”

The red-marked crates.

Everyone in the room understood at once.

Galahad asked, ”What was in them?”

”I don’t know.”

”Did you see them opened?”

”No.”

”Then what did you see?”

Lysa hesitated.

”Tovin did.”

Galahad leaned forward slightly.

”What?”

”He saw them put something in one.”

That could mean anything.

Kael waited.

Lysa’s face tightened.

”Blood.”

No one spoke.

Galahad asked, ”Human?”

”I don’t know.”

”From a person?”

”I don’t know.”

Good.

Do not force certainty from trauma.

Lysa continued, ”Rellan said leave. Tovin wanted to look longer.”

A faint bitterness entered her voice.

”Tovin always wanted to look longer.”

Kael almost smiled despite himself.

That sounded like something someone would say about a friend.

Not a clue.

A person.

Lysa stared at the floor.

”We left. Then the white mark was gone.”

Galahad’s expression sharpened.

”The copied mark?”

She looked at him.

”You know?”

”Yes.”

”It took us to the old road. After that, someone changed it.”

”Changed what?”

”Direction.”

Iris finally spoke.

”How many times?”

Lysa looked at her.

”Twice.”

That was new.

Iris crouched.

”Describe them.”

”First mark pointed west. Then another at the fork pointed south.”

”Same paint?”

”I think.”

”Same shape?”

”No.”

Iris’s eyes narrowed.

”What was different?”

Lysa struggled to remember.

”One was clean.”

”And the other?”

”Smudged. Like someone used a glove.”

Important.

Maybe.

Not enough yet.

Galahad asked, ”When did armed men appear?”

”After the second mark.”

”Did they attack immediately?”

”No.”

”What did they do?”

”Said road was closed.”

”Then?”

”Told us to turn around.”

Galahad frowned.

”That sounds like a warning.”

”It was.”

”Why didn’t you leave?”

Lysa’s face changed.

Rellan.

Tovin.

A party decision.

”We tried.”

Silence.

Kael felt the room tighten again.

”What happened?” Galahad asked.

Lysa looked at the wall.

”The voices started.”

There it was.

Kael felt the hair along his arms rise.

”Whose voice?” he asked.

Lysa looked at him.

”Mine.”

That caught everyone.

Galahad frowned. ”You heard yourself?”

Lysa nodded.

”What did it say?”

Her breathing grew shallow again.

Iris noticed.

”Enough.”

Galahad looked toward her.

”She is tiring.”

Correct.

They had already learned more than expected.

Galahad nodded.

”We stop.”

Lysa shook her head.

”No.”

”You need rest.”

”You need to know.”

Galahad studied her.

”Can you tell us without hurting yourself?”

She almost laughed.

”I already hurt.”

Fair.

Galahad let her continue.

Lysa looked toward the doorway but spoke to everyone.

”My voice was ahead of us.”

Kael’s stomach tightened.

”It said Tovin had been hurt.”

Tovin.

The same pattern as Derren.

Use someone emotionally important.

”Was he with you?” Kael asked.

”Yes.”

That made it worse.

Lysa continued, ”He was standing beside me.”

Milo would have hated this.

Kael did too.

”So you knew it was false,” Galahad said.

”Yes.”

”Did you follow?”

”No.”

”What happened?”

”Rellan said run.”

Her eyes filled again.

”We ran east.”

Galahad waited.

Lysa closed her eyes.

”The men were there.”

No one needed to ask which men.

Not yet.

”They said they could get us out.”

”Did you believe them?”

”For a minute.”

That single sentence carried enough shame that Galahad immediately said, ”You were being hunted by something using your own voice. Accepting help was reasonable.”

Lysa looked at him.

He continued.

”What happened after?”

”They took our weapons.”

”Why?”

”Said the lower path was narrow.”

Iris’s expression hardened.

Lysa looked at her wrists.

”Then they locked the door.”

There was no need to ask whether the assistance had been genuine.

Galahad stood.

”That is enough.”

This time Lysa did not argue.

Darius took the front of the improvised litter.

Galahad took the rear.

Kael frowned.

”You’re carrying?”

”Yes.”

”You’re mission lead.”

”And currently the person with two working arms who is not our scout.”

Darius glanced toward Kael.

Kael understood.

He needed his hands free.

System.

Ice.

Sword.

Good.

Iris took point.

Kael followed.

They left the room.

Lysa did not look back.

The corridor seemed louder now.

Every scrape.

Every distant vibration.

Every tick of cooling metal inside the walls.

Kael’s System remained open.

[Current Search Objective Updated]

Missing adventurer located alive: Lysa

Condition: weak / unable to travel independently

Priority: extraction

Search objective fulfilled

That should have felt like victory.

It did not.

Not yet.

They had to get her out.

Iris retraced their route quickly but carefully.

The first locked door disappeared behind them.

The blue cloth fragment.

The worked wall.

The narrow turn.

All familiar.

They had perhaps twenty minutes to reach the cistern if nothing changed.

Something changed.

The System warned Kael first.

[DIRECTIONAL SCAN]

Humanoid movement detected ahead

Count: 5

Closing

Kael raised one hand.

”People ahead.”

Iris stopped.

Darius did too.

Galahad lowered Lysa’s litter carefully.

”How many?”

”Five.”

”Distance?”

”Maybe eighty paces.”

Iris moved toward the corner.

Galahad caught her shoulder before she disappeared.

”Ten paces only.”

She nodded.

Lysa’s eyes opened.

”They came back.”

Galahad looked down.

”You know?”

”No.”

Fear knew.

That was different.

Darius drew his sword.

Kael did the same.

No panic.

Five people.

Not forty drakes.

But they were deep underground, carrying an injured prisoner they had just removed from a trapped room.

That changed the situation.

The footsteps became audible.

Slow.

Not running.

Metal armor.

At least some.

Then voices.

Too quiet to make out.

Iris returned.

”Five. Armed.”

”Same insignia?” Galahad asked.

She shook her head.

”Can’t see.”

Good.

No naming people before they knew.

Galahad looked around.

The corridor was narrow.

One side passage behind them.

The room they had just left farther back.

No useful cover.

Lysa whispered, ”Hide me.”

Everyone looked down.

Galahad crouched.

”Why?”

”They can’t see me.”

”Do you recognize them?”

”No.”

”Then how do you know?”

Lysa’s hand tightened around the blanket.

”Because if they’re the ones who put me there...”

She did not finish.

She did not need to.

Galahad looked toward the side passage.

Iris checked it.

”Shallow storage cut. Ten feet.”

”Enough.”

Darius and Galahad carried Lysa into it.

Kael followed.

The cut barely fit the litter and two people beside it.

Iris returned to the main passage.

Darius did too.

Galahad looked at Kael.

”You stay with her.”

Kael frowned.

”I can fight.”

”That is why.”

Kael understood after half a second.

If someone broke through, he was the last line.

He nodded.

Galahad joined Darius and Iris outside.

Kael crouched beside Lysa.

She was shaking.

Not from cold.

He considered Light.

Something soft.

Reassuring.

The System immediately reminded him.

[Light efficiency reduced under current condition]

Not worth it.

He let the idea go.

Instead, he placed his sword across his knees and said quietly, ”They have to get through Darius first.”

Lysa looked toward the opening.

”Who is Darius?”

Kael stared at her.

Then almost laughed.

Of course.

Not everyone knew every famous knight by sight.

”The large one.”

”That doesn’t help.”

Despite herself, Lysa almost smiled.

”Sir Darius Valen.”

Her eyes widened.

”The Shield?”

”Yes.”

She stared toward the corridor again.

”That’s Darius Valen?”

”Yes.”

”Why is he here?”

Kael considered.

”Long story.”

Lysa looked at him.

”You’re a prince in a hole beneath a volcano carrying Guild adventurers home.”

Kael nodded.

”Very long story.”

That got an actual breath of laughter.

Small.

Painful.

Human.

Then the footsteps stopped outside.

Kael’s humor vanished.

A man’s voice came from the main passage.

”Move.”

Galahad answered.

”No.”

The stranger sounded irritated.

”You are blocking the route.”

”We’ll move after you tell me who you are.”

Silence.

Kael listened.

One voice whispered something he could not make out.

Then the first man answered.

”Workers.”

Galahad said, ”Workers carrying swords?”

”Sometimes work needs swords.”

Milo would have liked that answer.

Kael almost did.

Galahad continued, ”Where are you going?”

”Lower cells.”

Lysa stopped shaking.

Completely.

Kael noticed.

Her eyes went wide.

She whispered.

”No.”

He looked at her.

She shook her head frantically.

”Don’t let them see me.”

Kael’s grip tightened around his sword.

Outside, Galahad asked, ”Why?”

”Orders.”

”From?”

No answer.

Then another man spoke.

”Move before this becomes difficult.”

Darius finally answered.

”It is already difficult.”

The corridor went quiet.

Kael felt something change in the air.

Not Aura Pressure.

Not yet.

Just people realizing the large man in front of them was not going to be intimidated.

A stranger asked, ”Who are you?”

Darius said nothing.

Galahad answered instead.

”Guild search party.”

The reaction outside was immediate.

Kael heard armor shift.

A foot move backward.

That mattered.

The first stranger said, ”There is no Guild operation below the lower works.”

Galahad’s voice cooled.

”There is now.”

Lysa closed her eyes.

Kael looked at her.

”You know that voice?”

She nodded.

Which one?

Before Kael could ask, she whispered:

”The first.”

Kael’s stomach tightened.

”Was he one of the men who took you?”

A small nod.

There.

Not assumption.

Identification.

Kael leaned toward the opening.

”Galahad.”

The Guild leader answered without turning.

”What?”

”The first man. Lysa recognizes his voice.”

Silence.

Then the stranger outside said:

”Lysa?”

Too quickly.

Far too quickly.

Galahad’s tone changed.

”You know her.”

No answer.

The man tried a different direction.

”She is dangerous.”

From beside Kael, Lysa made a sound that was almost disbelief.

Galahad said, ”Explain.”

”She has been exposed.”

”To what?”

”Move.”

Galahad did not.

The man’s voice hardened.

”You do not understand what you are carrying.”

Kael looked toward Lysa.

She looked just as confused as he felt.

The System did not suddenly explain her.

Good.

Galahad asked, ”Then explain it.”

The stranger said nothing.

Darius’s voice remained calm.

”If she were as dangerous as you claim, you would have started with that instead of pretending not to know her.”

That ended the argument.

At least the verbal one.

Steel left a sheath.

Kael heard it.

Then another.

Iris moved.

The sound was small.

A boot sliding.

Galahad said, ”Last chance. Put your weapons away.”

The first stranger laughed quietly.

”You should have taken the east road.”

Then someone attacked.

The clash rang through the passage.

Kael stayed with Lysa.

That was his job.

He hated it for approximately two seconds.

Then a body struck the wall outside hard enough to shake dust from the storage cut.

Darius.

Or someone hit by Darius.

Probably the second.

Another clash followed.

Galahad shouted something.

Iris moved through the sound rather than against it.

The narrow corridor made the fight difficult to read from Kael’s position.

He heard boots.

Steel.

A grunt.

Then someone broke past.

A man stumbled into view.

Leather armor.

Short sword.

No visible insignia from the angle Kael could see.

His eyes found the storage cut.

Then Lysa.

Recognition.

”There.”

Kael stood.

The man charged.

Kael met him at the entrance.

Sword against sword.

The first strike told Kael enough.

Trained.

Not Darius-trained.

Not elite.

Experienced.

The man tried to force Kael backward into the narrow space.

Kael refused.

Aura reinforced his arms.

Their blades locked.

The man leaned harder.

Kael felt his shoulder complain immediately.

Bad angle.

He shifted.

Not backward.

Sideways.

A lesson Darius had beaten into him repeatedly.

Preserve decisions.

The stranger’s sword slid past.

Kael turned his wrist and struck the man’s forearm with the flat of his blade.

The stranger recoiled.

Kael used Ice.

Frozen Step.

A thin patch formed beneath the man’s rear boot exactly as his weight shifted.

His foot slipped.

Kael drove a shoulder into his chest.

The man hit the wall.

Not dead.

Disarmed.

Kael kicked the sword away.

The stranger reached for a knife.

Kael pointed his blade at his throat.

”Don’t.”

The man froze.

Lysa stared.

Kael did not look back.

”Were you one of the people who took her?”

No answer.

Kael pressed the blade closer.

The man swallowed.

Outside, the fight ended abruptly.

Darius appeared at the storage opening.

His sword was clean enough that Kael suspected he had avoided killing where possible.

”Prince?”

”One alive.”

Darius looked at the man.

”Good.”

Kael frowned.

”Good?”

Galahad appeared behind him.

”Questions.”

Right.

The other four attackers were not dead.

Two were unconscious.

One had a broken arm.

The first voice Lysa had recognized sat against the opposite wall with Iris’s knife resting beneath his jaw and Galahad standing in front of him.

The fifth man had surrendered.

No dramatic slaughter.

That mattered.

The fight had lasted less than a minute because five armed men had made the mistake of attacking Darius Valen in a narrow corridor.

Kael looked toward Lysa.

She was alive.

Still hidden.

Still shaking.

Objective first.

They had found her.

Now they needed to carry her out before the people below realized she was gone.

The System flashed.

[DIRECTIONAL WARNING]

Additional humanoid movement detected

Multiple

Direction: deeper route

Kael’s relief disappeared.

”More coming.”

Galahad looked toward him.

”How many?”

The System tried.

Thermal interference distorted the count.

Estimated: 8–14

”Maybe ten. More than these.”

Galahad did not hesitate.

”Then questions wait.”

He looked at the surrendered men.

Then Lysa.

Then the corridor back toward the cistern.

”We move.”

The man Iris held against the wall laughed softly despite the knife.

”You won’t make it back.”

Galahad looked at him.

”Maybe.”

The man’s smile faded slightly.

Galahad continued.

”But she is coming with us.”

They lifted Lysa’s litter.

And for the first time since entering the deeper works, the search team stopped looking for answers and started running from the people who already knew them.
