The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

The old service road did not look like a road anymore.

It looked like something the forest had been trying to erase for years.

Roots had pushed through the broken stone in thick coils, moss covered most of the retaining wall, and sections of the original paving had slid downhill into the trees. Only the repeated cuts in the slope and the occasional iron stake still driven into the rock made it obvious that carts had once used the route regularly.

Iris led from the front, moving more slowly now that the entire group was behind her again. Sera stayed several paces back with enough elevation whenever the road curved to keep a clear line over the litters. Darius moved near Tovin, while Kael stayed closer to the middle where he could respond to warnings from either direction without leaving the wounded exposed.

Milo had recovered enough to walk without leaning on anyone.

That did not mean he looked good.

He had tied his sleeves around his waist because the heat from the slope kept changing, and his shirt was stained with ash, blood, and what Kael hoped was only mud. Every few minutes he flexed his injured hand as if checking whether it still belonged to him.

Sera noticed.

”You keep doing that.”

Milo looked toward his hand.

”Doing what?”

”That.”

He flexed his fingers again.

”This?”

”Yes.”

”I enjoy having fingers.”

”You’re checking the cut.”

”No.”

”You are.”

Milo looked toward Kael.

Kael immediately said, ”You are.”

Milo frowned.

”I asked neither of you.”

Sera stepped closer while still walking and caught his wrist before he could pull away. The bandage across his palm had darkened slightly.

”You’re bleeding again.”

”Barely.”

”That still counts.”

Milo sighed dramatically. ”I miss when you were less observant.”

”You’ve known me how long?”

He thought about it.

”Too long for this level of betrayal.”

Sera tightened the wrapping while they walked.

Milo winced.

”You did that on purpose.”

”Yes.”

Kael smiled.

For a few minutes, the road felt almost normal.

Not safe.

Never that.

But the conversation pulled something human back into the march.

The walking wounded talked quietly among themselves. One of Rask’s men helped the worker with the broken arm over a rough section without being asked. Mara carried Lysa’s pack because Lysa still could not put full weight on her ankle. Derren complained about the litter straps again, which the healer interpreted as evidence he was feeling better.

Even Tovin’s breathing had remained stable since Kael’s last intervention.

For now.

The System flickered.

[Environmental Scan]

Surface temperature: moderate

Geothermal vibration: persistent

Large heat signatures: none within immediate range

Human movement ahead: unresolved

Route integrity: deteriorated but passable

Kael dismissed the display and looked toward the road ahead.

The bridge was not visible yet.

He could hear it.

Or rather, he could hear the ravine.

Water moved somewhere below the trees with enough force to create a distant continuous roar. The sound grew louder as the road narrowed between two dark stone outcrops.

Mara caught up beside Kael.

”You’ll see it after the bend.”

”How bad?”

She considered.

”Depends what you think good looks like.”

”Milo has lowered my standards.”

From behind them, Milo said, ”I heard that.”

Mara laughed.

Kael looked at her.

It was the first time he had heard her laugh without exhaustion or bitterness attached to it.

”You know this road well?”

”I used to.”

”When?”

”Before the lower works got busy.”

She looked ahead.

”Eight years ago. Maybe nine.”

Kael waited.

She seemed surprised he did not immediately ask why.

Then she continued on her own.

”I hauled timber.”

”You?”

Mara looked at him.

”You sound surprised.”

”No. You don’t look like someone who enjoys hauling timber.”

”What does someone who enjoys hauling timber look like?”

Kael thought.

”Bram.”

Mara frowned. ”Who?”

”Gardener.”

She stared at him.

Milo appeared beside them somehow.

”The prince’s standards for occupation are complicated.”

Kael looked over.

”You were behind us.”

”I advanced.”

Sera called, ”Because I told you to stop slowing down.”

Milo pointed toward her without looking.

”Hostile revision.”

Mara shook her head.

Then continued.

”My father ran one of the timber crews up here.”

Kael looked toward her.

There.

Not forced.

Not asked.

A piece.

”What happened?”

Mara’s expression changed just enough that Kael knew the answer was not going to be simple.

”Work moved below.”

”Your father?”

”Stayed above.”

”Why?”

”He hated the tunnels.”

Milo became quieter.

Mara kept walking.

”He said stone above your head is fine until the stone decides otherwise.”

Kael looked toward the mountain.

”He wasn’t wrong.”

”No.”

A small pause.

”Did he stop working?”

Mara looked toward the ravine.

”No.”

She did not say more.

Kael did not push.

That felt important too.

The road bent.

The bridge appeared.

Everyone stopped.

Not because Galahad ordered them to.

Because the structure deserved a moment.

The ravine cut through the slope like a wound.

It was wider than Kael expected, perhaps fifty feet from one side to the other, with black stone walls dropping steeply toward a river far below. The water was not large, but it moved violently through a narrow channel, white where it struck exposed rock.

The bridge had once been impressive.

Stone piers supported a timber-and-stone deck wide enough for carts. The western half remained mostly intact.

The eastern half had sagged.

Not collapsed.

Sagged.

One side of the deck had dropped almost two feet where the supporting stonework beneath it had shifted. Several timber braces were split. One section of railing was completely gone.

Galahad stopped beside Iris.

”Passable?”

Iris looked toward Kael.

”Your turn.”

Kael focused.

The System expanded over the bridge.

[Structural Analysis]

Primary western support: stable

Central span: moderate stability

Eastern support: compromised

Timber reinforcement: aged / multiple fracture points

Current load tolerance: variable

Recommended crossing method: distributed weight / reduced simultaneous load

Heavy concentrated load near eastern edge: HIGH RISK

Kael stared at the damaged support.

Galahad waited.

”Can we cross?”

”Yes.”

Everyone relaxed slightly.

Kael continued.

”One at a time near the eastern side. No crowding. Litters will be the hardest part.”

The healer looked toward Tovin.

”Can we carry him?”

”Yes.”

”Can you promise the bridge holds?”

”No.”

She stared.

Kael met her eyes.

”I can tell you how to make it less likely to fail.”

That was enough.

Galahad looked at Iris.

”Check the eastern approach.”

She nodded.

Sera went with her.

Both crossed without trouble.

The bridge groaned beneath Sera near the low section.

Everyone heard it.

Milo looked toward Kael.

”Comforting.”

Kael ignored him.

Iris reached the far side and crouched near the cracked support.

Sera climbed onto a rock shelf above her.

A minute later Iris called back.

”East approach is worse than yesterday.”

Mara swore.

Galahad frowned. ”How?”

”Crack widened.”

Of course.

The Caldera had not stopped moving because they had rested.

Kael scanned again.

[Change detected]

Eastern support displacement increased

Estimated safe crossing window: uncertain

That was not a countdown.

Still unpleasant.

Darius looked toward the bridge.

”We move the walking wounded first.”

Galahad nodded.

”Agreed.”

No debate.

The procession began.

Healthy workers crossed first carrying supplies that would be needed on the far side. Then the walking wounded, each with one escort. Nobody rushed. Nobody crossed in groups.

Rask stood beside the bridge counting his people as they moved.

Kael noticed.

Not simply commanding.

Counting.

One.

Two.

Three.

When the man with the broken arm reached the eastern sag, the deck shifted beneath him.

He froze.

Rask immediately called, ”Keep moving. Don’t look down.”

The man looked down.

Milo groaned.

”Why do people always do that?”

The man’s breathing quickened.

Rask’s voice changed.

Not louder.

Steadier.

”Harven.”

The worker looked toward him.

Name.

Another person instead of another body.

”Eyes on me.”

Harven stared across the remaining distance.

Rask stepped closer to the edge on his side.

”You remember the quarry ladders?”

Harven swallowed.

”Yeah.”

”You cried on the third rung.”

A few people looked toward Rask.

Harven’s face twisted.

”I was twelve.”

”You still cried.”

”Shut up.”

”That’s better.”

Harven took one step.

Then another.

Rask kept talking.

”Your sister climbed past you carrying lunch.”

”That was one time.”

”She was nine.”

Several people laughed.

Harven reached the eastern side.

Iris grabbed his good arm.

Safe.

Harven turned immediately and shouted back, ”I hate you.”

Rask smiled.

”Alive enough to hate me.”

That moment changed Kael’s view of him slightly.

Not erased.

Changed.

Rask noticed Kael looking.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

”You all keep saying that.”

Kael smiled faintly.

The crossing continued.

Mara went next.

Before stepping onto the bridge, she stopped beside Rask.

”You remembered the ladder?”

He looked toward Harven.

”He made sure none of us forgot.”

Mara laughed.

Then crossed.

Kael watched her until she reached the other side.

There were relationships here.

Old ones.

Messy ones.

People who had worked together long before Kael entered the forest.

The Iron Vanguard could not remain a single shape in his mind anymore.

That did not make what had happened below less ugly.

It made the ugliness harder.

People capable of saving each other were also capable of looking away from what happened in another corridor.

That was something Kael understood too well from politics.

Galahad looked toward the two litters.

”Derren first.”

Derren lifted his head.

”Why me?”

The healer answered, ”Because if it breaks, I want to know before Tovin goes.”

Everyone looked at her.

She shrugged.

”Would you prefer I lie?”

Derren stared.

Then laughed once.

”That’s cold.”

”She works with me,” Milo said.

The healer looked at him.

”No.”

Derren’s litter was stripped down again.

Not completely.

The side poles remained because the bridge was wide enough, but four carriers took positions instead of two to distribute his weight and reduce the chance of one person stumbling.

Darius took front-left.

One of Rask’s men took front-right.

Kael took rear-left.

A worker took rear-right.

Galahad walked beside them until the bridge narrowed.

Then he stopped.

”Slow.”

Derren looked up.

”I hate all of you.”

Kael adjusted his grip.

”You’ve said that before.”

”I mean it more now.”

Darius stepped onto the bridge.

Wood creaked.

The rest followed.

The first half was easy.

That made the second worse.

They reached the sag.

The bridge leaned slightly toward the missing railing.

Kael felt Derren’s weight shift.

”Level.”

Everyone adjusted.

The System flashed.

[Load distribution acceptable]

Eastern support strain increasing

One step.

Another.

The bridge groaned.

Derren stopped complaining.

That worried Kael more than the noise.

They continued.

Halfway through the sag, a timber beneath the right side cracked.

Not broke.

Cracked.

The worker carrying rear-right flinched.

Kael felt the litter tilt.

”Hold.”

Everyone froze.

The System highlighted the beam.

[Fracture propagation detected]

Immediate failure probability: moderate

Kael looked toward the far side.

Fifteen feet.

Mara and Iris waited.

Sera had an arrow nocked but no target.

Rask stood beside them.

Galahad remained behind.

Darius looked over his shoulder.

”Can it take movement?”

Kael focused.

No certainty.

”Better than standing.”

Darius nodded.

”Move.”

No count.

No dramatic sprint.

Four synchronized steps.

The cracked timber split behind them.

The bridge dropped several inches.

Derren swore loudly.

Kael almost lost his footing.

Darius compensated instantly.

The far side came closer.

Mara grabbed the front pole.

Iris caught the other.

They pulled.

Derren cleared the bridge.

The damaged timber fell.

Not the span.

Just one brace.

Everyone exhaled.

Derren looked toward the healer.

”I have decided I’m healthy.”

She checked his leg.

”No.”

Worth trying.

Kael looked back across.

Tovin remained.

The bridge was now worse.

Of course.

Milo stood beside Tovin’s litter.

His expression had lost most of its humor.

Galahad looked toward Kael.

”Assessment.”

Kael scanned.

[Structural Update]

Eastern span stability: POOR

Recent brace failure increased localized load

Crossing possible with reduced weight

Recommended reinforcement before critical transport

Kael looked around.

”What can we reinforce with?”

Mara pointed toward the old railing.

”Timber.”

Darius shook his head.

”Rotten.”

Rask looked toward the service road behind them.

”Stone?”

Too heavy.

Milo stepped closer.

”Force.”

Everyone looked at him.

Sera immediately said, ”No.”

Milo looked toward her.

”I did not say I’d hold the entire bridge.”

”You were thinking it.”

”I was thinking support.”

Kael understood.

”A brace.”

Milo pointed at him.

”Yes.”

Sera folded her arms.

”You barely climbed.”

”Different problem.”

”Same mana.”

”Different efficiency.”

That mattered.

Milo walked to the bridge edge and crouched.

Kael joined him.

”Show me.”

Milo pointed toward the broken support.

”I don’t hold the bridge up.”

”Then?”

”I keep that beam from shifting sideways.”

Kael followed the line.

The damaged eastern structure was not failing because the whole bridge lacked vertical support.

Part of it was twisting.

Milo continued.

”If I keep the load moving down instead of out, the remaining brace does less work.”

Kael looked toward Darius.

Darius nodded.

”That could help.”

Sera remained unconvinced.

”How much mana?”

Milo looked toward her.

”Less than catching Tovin after he falls into a ravine.”

”Not funny.”

”I know.”

That was what convinced her more than the explanation.

Milo stood.

Galahad stepped close.

”One attempt.”

”Yes.”

”If you feel the spell slipping, say it before you collapse.”

”I always communicate beautifully.”

Sera stared.

Milo sighed.

”Yes.”

The group prepared Tovin.

The older healer climbed onto the bridge first.

Galahad frowned.

”No.”

”I need to be near him.”

”If the bridge fails—”

”If his condition changes halfway across, which one of you knows what to do?”

Silence.

She stepped onto the bridge.

Galahad looked deeply unhappy.

”Stay five paces ahead.”

”Fine.”

Tovin’s litter was reduced further.

Extra packs came off.

Heavy gear came off.

Even the blanket was folded tight instead of hanging over the sides.

Darius took front-left again.

Rask took front-right this time.

Kael took rear-left.

Galahad took rear-right.

Milo stood on the western edge with both hands raised.

Sera stayed beside him.

Iris and Mara waited east.

Lysa sat beyond them, staring at Tovin.

Derren watched too.

The entire road seemed to go quiet.

Milo breathed in.

Wind moved around his boots first.

Not enough to lift anything.

Just controlled airflow.

Then Force settled across the damaged support.

Kael could not see it.

He could see Milo’s concentration.

Force Plane.

Small.

Precise.

The System detected the change.

[External stabilization detected]

Lateral support improved

Estimated load tolerance temporarily increased

Kael looked at Milo.

”That works.”

Milo grinned faintly.

”I know.”

”Don’t get excited.”

”I am too tired.”

They crossed.

The first half remained stable.

The healer walked ahead, glancing back constantly.

At the sag, the bridge groaned.

Milo’s hands tightened.

The damaged support shifted.

Then stopped.

Kael felt it.

Not strength.

Correction.

Milo was not overpowering the bridge.

He was helping it fail in a less dangerous direction.

One step.

Two.

Tovin’s breathing remained shallow.

The eastern span creaked.

The System flashed.

[Support movement increasing]

”Milo.”

”I know.”

His voice came strained.

The Force Plane held.

Then Tovin convulsed.

Not violently.

Enough.

The litter shook.

The healer spun around.

”Stop!”

Everyone stopped.

Bad.

Very bad.

The bridge moved beneath them.

Kael looked down at Tovin.

His eyes had opened.

Not focused.

His back arched slightly.

The System exploded.

[Tovin Marr — acute mana destabilization]

Foreign residue surge detected

Circulatory stress increasing

Movement risk: HIGH

Galahad looked toward Kael.

”Can we move?”

The healer shouted, ”No!”

Milo’s voice came from behind.

”I cannot hold this forever!”

Two emergencies.

Same place.

Kael’s mind moved.

No miracle.

No full solution.

”Keep him level.”

Galahad adjusted.

Darius locked his arms.

Rask did the same.

The healer came closer.

Tovin’s breathing turned ragged.

Kael reached with Blood Manipulation.

Not enough to fully stabilize from where he stood.

Still something.

Blood Stabilization.

His awareness caught Tovin’s pulse.

Too fast.

Then irregular.

Kael slowed what he could.

The System responded.

[Circulatory stress reduced slightly]

Mana instability persists

The bridge groaned.

Milo swore.

”Kael!”

”I know!”

The healer looked toward Tovin’s face.

”Move him!”

Everyone stepped.

Slowly.

Tovin convulsed again.

The eastern support shifted.

Milo’s Force Plane snapped sideways.

He cried out.

Sera grabbed his shoulder.

”Milo!”

”Still holding!”

Blood ran from his nose again.

Kael looked toward the far side.

Eight feet.

”Move!”

Darius did not wait.

The four carriers advanced together.

The bridge dropped.

Not much.

Enough to make everyone stumble.

Rask slipped.

His knee hit the deck.

Tovin’s litter tilted.

Kael took more weight.

Pain exploded through his shoulder.

Darius compensated.

Galahad caught Rask’s side of the frame.

”Up!”

Rask regained footing.

Six feet.

Milo made a sound behind them.

The Force Plane flickered.

Four feet.

Mara stepped onto the bridge.

Iris grabbed her.

”No.”

”Tovin!”

”Wait.”

Two feet.

The remaining eastern brace split.

Kael heard it.

Everyone did.

Darius shouted, ”NOW!”

They lunged the last distance.

Mara and Iris grabbed the litter.

The healer jumped aside.

Kael stumbled onto solid ground.

Galahad followed.

Rask cleared.

Darius stepped off last.

Milo released the spell.

The eastern side of the bridge collapsed.

Not the whole structure.

The sagging section dropped into the ravine in a roaring explosion of wood and stone.

Milo fell backward.

Sera caught him before his head hit the road.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then the healer shouted.

”Tovin!”

Everything else disappeared.

The bridge.

The road.

The ravine.

Kael dropped beside the litter.

Tovin had stopped convulsing.

That was not good.

His eyes remained open but unfocused.

The System flashed.

[Circulatory collapse risk: imminent]

Kael reached for Blood again.

The healer grabbed his wrist.

”Wait.”

”What?”

”His pulse.”

She felt.

Then again.

Kael watched her face.

Lysa crawled closer despite Mara trying to stop her.

”Tovin?”

The healer looked toward Kael.

”Now.”

Kael understood.

He placed two fingers against Tovin’s wrist.

Blood Manipulation responded.

Weak pulse.

Too weak.

He stabilized.

Careful.

Not force.

Support.

Emergency Coagulation.

Blood Stabilization.

Kael felt the drain immediately.

His vision narrowed slightly.

The System warned him.

[User blood expenditure increasing]

Physical fatigue: high

Recommended limit approaching

He ignored it for three more breaths.

The pulse improved.

Barely.

The healer looked toward him.

”Enough.”

Kael released.

His body swayed.

Darius caught his shoulder.

The wrong one.

Kael flinched.

Darius immediately moved his hand.

”Sorry.”

Kael stared.

Darius Valen had apologized.

Milo, still sitting on the road with Sera beside him, raised one finger.

”I witnessed that.”

Darius looked over.

Milo lowered the finger.

Kael laughed despite everything.

It hurt.

Worth it.

The healer checked Tovin again.

”He’s still here.”

Lysa covered her face.

Derren shouted from farther back.

”What happened?”

”Tovin’s alive,” Kael called.

Derren sagged back.

Good.

One answer.

The bridge behind them continued dropping pieces into the ravine.

The western half remained.

The eastern crossing was gone.

Everyone who had already crossed was now separated from anyone still west.

Galahad looked back.

His face changed.

Kael followed his gaze.

Three people remained on the western side.

Sera.

Milo.

And one of Rask’s fighters.

They stared across the destroyed section.

Milo looked down into the ravine.

Then toward Sera.

Then across at Kael.

”Well.”

Sera’s expression was not amused.

Galahad stepped toward the edge.

”Can you go back?”

Milo looked at the surviving western span.

”Back where?”

Right.

The road behind them eventually returned toward the vent.

Not where they wanted to go.

Rask swore.

His fighter on the far side shouted, ”There’s another path!”

Mara looked toward him.

”What path?”

The man pointed uphill.

”Old cable line!”

Mara stared.

Then slapped one hand against her forehead.

”Of course.”

Galahad looked toward her.

”Useful?”

”Maybe.”

Milo shouted across the ravine.

”I heard that word!”

Mara actually laughed.

Even Sera smiled.

Kael looked toward the collapsed bridge.

This was bad.

But not hopeless.

And, strangely, after hours of people barely tolerating one another, the first person already searching for a way to retrieve Milo and Sera was Rask.

He stood at the broken edge scanning the slope.

”Where does the cable line come out?”

Mara pointed above them.

”Upper switchback. It crosses the ravine farther north.”

”How far?”

”Twenty minutes.”

Rask immediately turned.

”I’ll go.”

Galahad caught his arm.

”No.”

Rask looked at him.

”One scout.”

”Iris goes.”

Rask’s jaw tightened.

”My man is over there.”

Galahad held his gaze.

”And two of mine.”

There was a brief silence.

Then Rask nodded.

Not happy.

But understanding.

Galahad looked toward Iris.

”Find the cable crossing. Confirm it exists. Do not cross unless necessary.”

She nodded and disappeared uphill.

Rask watched her go.

Kael looked toward him.

”You know Harven a long time?”

Rask frowned.

”What?”

”Your man.”

Rask looked across the ravine.

Harven had the broken arm.

No.

Different man.

Kael realized.

Rask corrected him.

”That’s Kel.”

Kael stored the name.

Rask continued before Kael asked.

”Fifteen years.”

”Family?”

”No.”

A pause.

”Close enough.”

Across the ravine, Milo cupped his hands around his mouth.

”IF YOU ARE DISCUSSING WHETHER I AM WORTH SAVING, I WOULD LIKE TO CONTRIBUTE.”

Kael laughed.

Sera hit Milo’s arm.

He flinched.

”Why?”

”You’re shouting beside my ear.”

”You could move.”

”Toward the ravine?”

”Fair.”

Rask shook his head.

Then, despite himself, smiled.

Kael noticed.

So did Galahad.

The expedition was split again.

The bridge was gone.

Tovin remained critical.

The Caldera still trembled beneath them.

But for the first time in several Chapters, the danger had not made the group smaller.

It had made them act more like one.

Galahad looked toward the slope where Iris had disappeared.

”We solve this first.”

No one argued.
