The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

”We start now.”

Theron Vance did not turn toward the Ash-King again.

That told Kael more than anything else could have.

A man seeing that creature for the first time would have stared. Kael had. Milo had forgotten to complain. Even Darius had remained at the observation shelf several breaths longer than necessary, studying the enormous shape moving through the basin below.

Vance simply walked away.

He already knew what waited down there.

He had already watched it kill his people.

Three times, according to him, the Iron Vanguard had tried to bring the Ash-King down. Three times they had learned something, lost people, and returned with less than they carried in.

Kael followed him through the vent passage.

The memory of the creature followed harder.

The first thing Kael had noticed from the shelf had been its size. That had been unavoidable. It had moved between volcanic pillars as if the stone formations had grown around it rather than existed before it. Yet the longer Kael thought about what he had seen, the less its size bothered him compared with everything else.

The Ash-King looked dead.

Not injured.

Not old in the ordinary sense.

Dead.

Its scales had none of the hard shine of the mature drakes they had fought. They were dull charcoal and soot-black, cracked across the body like mud left beneath a merciless sun. The hide stretched too tightly over a frame that should not have been able to support so much mass. Ribs had shown beneath leather-like flesh when it turned. Its shoulders rose in hard, skeletal ridges. Even the long neck looked starved despite being thick enough that Kael could have stood inside its jaws.

Then there were the eyes.

Black.

Sunken.

Glassy.

Tiny white points at their centers.

Kael had felt those eyes searching the shelf even before the creature had found their direction.

Worse were the spines.

Rows of jagged hollow structures ran down the back of its neck and along the spine, and dark smoke had leaked continuously through them. Not the sudden smoke of burning flesh. Slow smoke. Constant smoke. The creature seemed to carry a piece of the volcano inside itself and release it through those vents one breath at a time.

The System had called its assessment incomplete.

Kael agreed.

They knew almost nothing.

That was going to change before anyone swung a sword.

The group reached the forward hold without speaking much. Heat followed them out of the vent tunnel, clinging to clothing and armor. Milo immediately lowered himself onto the first crate he found and bent forward with both elbows on his knees.

Vance looked at him.

”You cannot fight.”

Milo raised one finger without lifting his head.

”I dislike people reaching accurate conclusions so quickly.”

Sera stopped beside him.

”He can fight.”

Milo looked up.

”Thank you.”

”For about thirty seconds.”

His expression fell.

Sera added, ”Maybe forty if he stops talking.”

”I withdraw my gratitude.”

Vance looked from one to the other.

”You’re the Wind mage.”

”Among other disappointments.”

”Force too.”

Milo’s eyes sharpened slightly.

That mattered.

”Who told you?”

Vance nodded toward one of his people in the lower chamber.

”People talk after someone crosses a missing bridge on air.”

Milo looked toward Kael.

”We need stricter witnesses.”

Kael ignored him.

Vance continued studying Milo.

”How much mana?”

Milo straightened enough to look offended properly.

”You ask everyone that before introductions?”

”Yes.”

”Charming.”

”How much?”

Milo exhaled.

”Enough for small work. Not enough for what you want.”

Vance’s eyes narrowed.

”You do not know what I want.”

”If it involves that creature and the word Wind, you want me moving ash.”

Silence.

Milo smiled without humor.

”I am tired, not stupid.”

Vance nodded once.

”Good.”

Galahad came up from behind them.

”No large casting from him unless there is no alternative.”

Vance looked at him.

”You are?”

”Galahad Charney. Mission lead.”

Something passed through Vance’s face when he heard that Kael was not technically commanding the expedition.

Approval, perhaps.

Or amusement.

”You tell the prince what to do?”

”When the mission requires it.”

Kael stepped around them.

”He enjoys it.”

”I do.”

Vance looked between the two men.

Then toward Darius.

”And him?”

Darius did not bother answering.

Kael did.

”He ignores everyone.”

Darius looked at him.

”Not everyone.”

”Mostly me.”

”Usually with reason.”

Rask covered his mouth.

Kael saw him.

”Something funny?”

”No, Prince.”

”Terrible liar.”

”That is why I stopped.”

Vance’s gaze stayed on Darius a moment longer.

The Empire’s Shield.

The name carried weight even here.

Especially here.

Then Vance returned to the planning shelf.

Maps were still spread across the table. One of his people moved a lantern closer before leaving. The rest of Kael’s group gathered around slowly, exhaustion turning every step into a decision.

Veyra took the far side.

Her hand remained near the metal focus under her cloak.

One shot.

That was what she had told Kael.

One more serious discharge before the partially repaired focus became a larger danger to her than whatever she pointed it at.

Kael did not know whether she had told the truth.

For now, he planned as if she had.

Vance planted one finger on the map.

”We are not killing it first.”

Kael looked up.

That was not what he expected.

Galahad asked, ”Why?”

”Because four people are still alive at the ventilation station.”

Vance moved his finger to the southern mark.

”Or they were when the line last carried.”

”You said eleven confirmed,” Kael said.

”Seven are beyond the lower gallery. Four here.”

”And the three uncertain?”

”Somewhere between the eastern service cut and the collapsed transfer tunnel.”

Kael looked at the map.

”Then why not recover everyone before fighting?”

Vance stared at him.

”Because the other seven are behind its feeding ground.”

There it was.

He dragged a piece of charcoal across the map and drew a rough curve through the center.

”This is not a wall. It moves. The Ash-King’s territory is most of the inner basin now. The ventilation station sits outside the deepest part. We can reach those four if we understand its current patrol.”

”And the other seven?”

”We kill it.”

Kael’s jaw tightened.

Vance saw.

”There is no clever tunnel I forgot to mention because I enjoy dangerous plans, Prince. We tried them.”

”I didn’t say there was.”

”You were thinking it.”

Milo looked at Kael.

Kael frowned.

”Why does everyone know when I’m thinking something now?”

”Your face,” Milo said.

Sera nodded.

Iris added, ”Mostly the eyebrows.”

Kael stared at them.

Darius said nothing.

That was somehow worse.

Vance’s mouth moved faintly.

Almost a smile.

Then he returned to the map.

”The first thing we do is recover the ventilation group.”

Galahad leaned closer.

”Route?”

”Here.”

Vance traced a narrow line through the south side of the basin.

”Old exhaust trench. Built before our people started using the lower works. The sides are deep enough to hide movement from most of the basin.”

Iris studied the line.

”Most?”

”The last hundred yards are exposed.”

”Of course they are,” Milo muttered.

Vance ignored him.

”Ash-King usually circles the northern shelves after feeding. If it follows the same pattern, we have a window.”

Darius finally spoke.

”You said usually.”

”Yes.”

”How reliable?”

”Less than I’d like.”

”Then not reliable.”

Vance looked at him.

”No.”

Darius nodded.

That answer pleased him more than confidence would have.

Kael looked toward Iris.

”What do you need?”

”To see the route.”

Vance shook his head.

”Not alone.”

Iris looked at him.

”I didn’t ask.”

”The Ash-King flies.”

Everyone went still.

Milo slowly raised his head.

Kael remembered the creature’s wings.

Tattered.

Frayed.

Half-burned.

He had assumed—

”That thing flies?” Milo asked.

”Yes.”

”With those?”

Vance nodded.

”Quietly.”

Milo stared.

Then looked at Kael.

”No.”

Kael almost smiled.

”This one is reasonable.”

”I want it recorded.”

Vance continued.

”The first time it did it, six people died before anyone understood where it had gone.”

Sera’s expression changed.

”No wingbeat?”

”Not one you hear soon enough.”

”How?”

Vance shrugged.

”If you survive long enough to study it, tell me.”

Sera looked toward Iris.

Iris was already thinking.

Vance pointed toward the observation route they had just used.

”The ash hides it. The wings barely disturb the cloud until it is already moving through it.”

Sera touched the top of her quiver.

Nine usable arrows.

One cracked emergency shaft.

Kael did not need to see her lips move to know she was counting.

This time the movement stopped before the final number.

She took her hand away.

Good.

Vance noticed the quiver.

”That all you have?”

Sera looked at him.

”Yes.”

”Then you should stay here.”

The room became quieter.

Milo’s head rose.

Kael turned toward Vance.

Sera did not.

She simply asked, ”Why?”

”Because nine arrows are nine chances, and that thing needs more.”

”That is your conclusion after three failed attempts?”

Vance’s eyebrows moved.

Sera continued.

”How many arrows did you use?”

”I didn’t count.”

”I would have.”

Milo looked down, hiding something that might have been a smile.

Vance studied her.

Then pointed toward the map.

”If you come, do not waste them on its torso.”

”Why?”

”Doesn’t care.”

”Eyes?”

”Protected.”

”Wing joints?”

”Better.”

”Throat?”

Vance paused.

Sera noticed.

”So throat.”

”Sometimes.”

”Meaning?”

”When it breathes.”

Kael looked at him.

”Breathes what?”

Vance’s face changed.

Not fear.

Memory.

”Ash.”

Milo stopped moving entirely.

Kael frowned.

”Not fire?”

”No.”

That explained the name.

Vance reached toward another map sheet and flipped it over. The back had been stained gray-black in several places.

”This came from the second attempt.”

He pushed it across the table.

Kael touched the edge.

Fine powder came away against his fingertip.

Ash.

Milo leaned closer without touching it.

Vance said, ”When the chest begins glowing through the cracks, you move.”

”What kind of glow?” Veyra asked.

Vance looked at her for the first time in several minutes.

”Depends on how deep it draws. Dull red most times. Almost white before the largest breath.”

Veyra’s attention sharpened.

”Heat?”

”Yes.”

”How much?”

Vance looked at the wrapped focus near her side.

”Enough that two men in plate cooked without the ash touching skin.”

Nobody spoke.

Vance’s finger pressed into the blackened map.

”But heat is not the worst part.”

Milo understood first.

”Air.”

Vance nodded.

”The cloud chokes you.”

”How quickly?”

”If you take a full breath inside it?”

He looked toward one of the injured people in the lower chamber.

”Quickly.”

Milo’s humor was gone now.

”Gas composition?”

”I don’t know.”

”Sulfur?”

”Probably.”

”Acidic?”

”Some of it.”

”Density?”

Vance stared at him.

Milo rubbed his face.

”Right. Mercenary organization. No laboratory reports.”

Mara spoke from beside Rask.

”There are laboratory reports.”

Vance turned.

Mara looked toward Kael.

”Lower records.”

The same records she had already mentioned.

Vance’s expression became unreadable.

Kael noticed.

”So you measured it.”

Mara nodded.

”Some.”

”Where are the records?”

”Not here.”

Of course.

Kael looked at Vance.

”You knew.”

”Yes.”

”What did they find?”

Vance did not answer immediately.

Then: ”The ash stays hot longer than normal volcanic ash. Fine particles remain suspended longer. Gas accumulates in low areas. Cloth helps with the particles, not enough with the gas.”

Milo looked down at the map.

”How does it move after the breath?”

”Usually through the cloud.”

Sera’s gaze hardened.

”Blind attack.”

”No.”

Vance looked at her.

”It can see.”

Silence.

Sera glanced toward Iris.

”Through its own ash?”

”Yes.”

Milo leaned back.

”I hate it.”

”That makes two of us.”

”Only two?”

Vance looked around the hold.

”Most people who hated it are dead.”

The words killed the humor cleanly.

Kael stared at the blackened map.

The fight had changed before it started.

Ash was not an attack they could block once and forget.

It would remain.

It would cover the battlefield.

Hide the creature.

Poison low ground.

Blind Sera.

Confuse Iris’s sight.

Make steel hot.

Clog lungs.

Turn every movement after the first breath into a worse version of the movement before it.

The System opened.

[Tactical Information Added]

Ash-King respiratory discharge: superheated particulate / toxic gas mixture

Visibility hazard: extreme

Respiratory hazard: severe

Thermal hazard: severe

Persistent environmental contamination probable

Countermeasure certainty: low

Kael looked toward Milo.

”Could you clear it?”

Milo laughed once.

”No.”

Kael waited.

Milo sighed.

”Some of it.”

That was better.

He stood and moved toward the table.

”Open terrain, maybe I can carve a lane. Narrow tunnel, easier if I know where I’m sending it. Basin with bad thermals, rising heat, vents, crosscurrents, and a monster actively producing more?”

He pointed at himself.

”I am one exhausted man.”

Vance asked, ”If rested?”

”Still one man.”

”That was not the question.”

Milo looked at him.

”If rested, I could keep sections breathable longer. Not the whole battlefield.”

”How long?”

”Depends on volume.”

Vance’s jaw tightened.

Milo smiled without humor.

”You like numbers too.”

”Useful ones.”

”Then give me useful conditions.”

Vance nodded.

Fair.

Kael watched them.

That was the first moment Vance stopped treating Milo as merely another depleted mage.

”Show him the basin airflow,” Vance told Mara.

She moved immediately.

A second map came out.

This one showed natural vents, old tunnels, and arrows marking probable thermal currents.

Milo leaned over it.

Sera looked at Kael.

”He’s gone.”

”What?”

”When he gets that face.”

Milo was already tracing the map with one finger.

”If this vent is active, why is this route marked safe?”

Vance answered.

”It was inactive last month.”

”Last month is historical literature.”

Rask laughed.

Milo continued.

”Hot air rises here, pulls from this cut, then curls against the western wall. If the ash enters from north...”

He stopped.

His finger changed direction.

”It comes back.”

Mara frowned.

”Back where?”

”Toward whoever thinks they escaped it.”

Galahad came closer.

”Meaning?”

Milo drew a circle with his fingertip.

”You run south from the cloud. Natural airflow catches the ash, lifts it along the warm wall, then pushes part of it east. If you keep moving without checking, you walk into the same cloud again.”

Vance stared at the map.

One of his people behind him swore.

Vance looked toward the lower chamber.

”Second attempt.”

No one needed explanation.

People had died there.

Milo saw it too.

His expression changed.

”You didn’t know.”

”No.”

”Now you do.”

Vance looked at him.

”Now I do.”

No defensiveness.

No excuse.

Kael stored that.

They spent the next half hour studying the creature without seeing it.

That sounded absurd until Kael realized how much a dead battlefield could teach.

Vance described the first attempt.

They had attacked from the upper shelf with heavy crossbows, mages, and two teams carrying hooked chains intended for drakes. The Ash-King had climbed the basalt wall instead of taking the route they expected and reached the ranged line before the chains were placed.

Second attempt.

They used terrain.

Collapsed a stone shelf beneath it.

The fall injured one rear leg.

Then the Ash-King breathed ash into the lower basin, took flight through the cloud, and attacked the retreat from above.

Third attempt.

They tried to force it near a magma vent where the terrain narrowed.

It did not care about the heat.

The vent erupted beneath the Vanguard’s flank instead.

Nine people died.

Kael listened.

Darius asked questions.

Not many.

The important ones.

”Which leg?”

”Right rear.”

”Still favors it?”

”Sometimes.”

”After landing?”

”Yes.”

”How long?”

”One or two steps.”

”Wing damage?”

”Old tears. New cut along the left membrane.”

”Does it reduce lift?”

”Not enough.”

”Turning direction in the air?”

Vance paused.

”Usually left.”

”Usually?”

”It can turn right.”

Darius nodded.

Sera asked where the old crossbow bolts had penetrated.

Iris asked which surfaces held tracks after ashfall.

Galahad asked where every death occurred.

Not who killed whom.

Where.

The map changed under their questions.

Deaths clustered.

Routes repeated.

Bad assumptions became visible.

Kael understood why Galahad asked.

The first team had lost people on open shelves.

The second during retreat through low terrain.

The third near a vent.

Each failure had a geography.

Galahad circled all three.

”We do not fight it in any of these.”

Vance folded his arms.

”Then where?”

”Not decided.”

”You are telling me where not to fight.”

”Yes.”

”That is not enough.”

”No.”

Galahad met his eyes.

”But it is more than you had this morning.”

Vance stared.

Then nodded.

Again, Kael noticed.

Theron Vance did not seem to mind being contradicted if the contradiction came with something useful.

That explained Rask.

Maybe more than Kael wanted.

Twenty minutes after that, Iris returned to the observation shelf with Vance, Darius, Sera, and Kael.

No Milo.

No Galahad.

No Mara.

No larger group.

This time they approached from a lower crack in the volcanic ridge, moving on hands and knees through black stone until Iris raised one fist.

Everyone stopped.

Ash covered the ground ahead.

Not ordinary gray dust.

It lay in fine soft layers against the stone, deeper in the cracks.

Iris touched none of it.

She leaned close.

Then pointed.

A dead lizard lay partly buried.

Or what remained of one.

Its body had dried nearly flat.

No burn marks.

No obvious wound.

Kael scanned.

[Environmental Sample — Remote Assessment]

Temperature: elevated

Particulate density: high

Biological hazard: probable

Cause of death: unresolved

Iris looked toward Vance.

”How old?”

”Could be yesterday.”

She pointed toward the plants growing from a fissure several feet farther back.

Except growing was the wrong word.

The stems had turned colorless.

Leaves curled inward.

When a faint current touched them, one leaf broke apart.

Gray powder drifted across the stone.

Sera watched it.

”That thing did this?”

Vance nodded.

”Where it spends enough time.”

The Ashen Touch.

Kael did not have a name for it yet.

He did not need one.

The dead ground marked the creature better than footprints.

Iris looked across the basin.

”Useful.”

Vance stared at her.

She glanced back.

”For tracking.”

”Of course.”

”What did you think I meant?”

Vance decided not to answer.

They reached the second observation point.

The Ash-King was gone.

Kael’s stomach tightened.

Iris immediately lowered herself behind the stone.

Darius did the same.

Sera moved without being told, bow in one hand but no arrow nocked.

Vance scanned the basin.

”Where?”

No one answered.

The dead drake carcass remained.

Ash drifted around it.

But the giant creature had disappeared.

Kael opened the System.

[Threat Scan]

High-density draconic signature: intermittent

Environmental interference significant

Direction unresolved

That was new.

Kael hated it.

The System could sense something.

Could not place it.

Iris touched the ground.

Then looked upward.

Not at the sky.

At the ash.

Fine particles were moving.

Almost imperceptibly.

One direction near the basin floor.

Another several yards above it.

Her eyes narrowed.

”Down.”

Nobody questioned her.

Kael flattened against black stone.

Sera pressed against the ridge beside him.

Darius lowered his body on the other side.

Vance dropped last.

For two seconds, nothing happened.

Then the ash above the basin folded.

There was no wingbeat.

No thunder.

No great rushing sound.

A shape came through the gray.

Kael’s mind recognized pieces before the whole.

Tattered wing.

Black ribs.

A long skeletal neck.

Two white points inside sunken black eyes.

The Ash-King crossed the basin almost silently.

Almost.

At this distance Kael heard something.

Not wingbeats.

A dry whisper.

Like enormous sheets of burnt paper dragged through air.

The creature banked left.

Darius watched the rear leg.

Sera watched the wing.

Iris watched everything else.

Vance watched the head.

Kael watched the spines.

Smoke poured from them.

More than before.

The chest beneath the cracked scales pulsed.

Dull ember-red.

Then brighter.

Vance’s fingers tightened against the rock.

”Watch.”

The Ash-King dropped toward the far basin.

A mature drake burst from behind a basalt ridge.

It had been hiding.

Or feeding.

Kael never learned which.

The drake saw the Ash-King.

Panic took it.

It ran.

Not toward the sky.

Away.

The Ash-King landed behind it.

The right rear leg hit.

Shifted.

One step.

Exactly as Vance said.

Darius’s eyes narrowed.

The drake scrambled over loose stone.

The Ash-King did not chase.

Its chest expanded.

The ember glow intensified through the cracks in its neck.

Red.

Then pale.

Almost white.

Vance whispered, ”Now.”

The jaws opened.

No flame came.

For a fraction of a second, nothing did.

Then the world vanished.

Ash exploded from the Ash-King’s mouth under such pressure that the first impact against the ground looked solid. A gray-black wall struck the fleeing drake and erased it from sight.

The cloud kept moving.

Stone disappeared.

The dead drake carcass disappeared.

Half the basin disappeared.

Kael felt heat reach the observation shelf a heartbeat later.

Not the ash.

Only the heat in front of it.

His skin tightened.

Sera covered her mouth.

Iris pulled cloth over her nose.

Vance crawled backward.

”Move.”

They did.

Not running.

Low.

Fast.

The ash cloud rolled across the basin beneath them.

Then climbed.

Kael heard it before he saw it reach the ridge.

A hiss.

Millions of particles striking stone.

The System flashed.

[Air Quality Deteriorating]

Withdraw

Darius grabbed Kael’s shoulder and pulled him through the crack.

Sera came next.

Iris.

Vance last.

Ash spilled over the edge behind him.

Only a thin portion of the cloud.

Enough.

Kael’s eyes began burning instantly.

His throat tightened.

”Cloth!”

Vance already had his face covered.

Kael dragged his sleeve over his mouth.

Bad protection.

Better than nothing.

Sera coughed once.

Darius shoved them down the passage.

The ash followed along the ceiling, carried by hot air.

Not fast.

Persistent.

Kael felt cold mana rise instinctively into his palm.

He almost created a wall.

Stopped.

Blocking the tunnel would trap the gas with them.

Wrong solution.

They moved.

The first turn put stone between them and the worst of it.

The second dropped lower.

Vance stopped.

”No.”

Iris nearly hit him.

”What?”

”Not down.”

Kael understood a moment later.

Gas.

Low ground.

They reversed.

Took the higher fork.

The observation route became a lung-burning crawl.

No fight.

No sword.

No monster even visible anymore.

Kael’s chest hurt worse than when the altered drake had struck him.

Sera coughed again.

Darius’s breathing remained controlled but heavier.

Iris’s eyes watered enough that she wiped them twice.

Vance kept one hand against the wall.

Then a gust touched Kael’s face.

Weak.

Fresh.

Milo.

They emerged into the forward passage where Milo stood twenty feet away, one palm raised.

The Wind spell was tiny.

A controlled current.

Nothing more.

But it pulled clean air from the hold and pushed it toward them.

Milo saw their faces.

”Bad?”

Kael inhaled.

Coughed.

”Yes.”

Milo adjusted his wrist.

The airflow strengthened slightly.

Not much.

Just enough.

”Do not breathe deeply yet.”

Vance came out last.

Gray dust coated his shoulders.

Milo looked at him.

”That was a small amount?”

”Yes.”

Milo’s expression became grim.

”Wonderful.”

Sera leaned against the wall.

Her eyes remained red.

She had not fired once.

Nine arrows remained.

Kael noticed.

So did she.

Her hand touched the quiver.

Then fell away.

Milo looked at her.

”You didn’t shoot.”

”No.”

”Why?”

”Bad shot.”

Simple.

Milo nodded.

Kael understood the importance anyway.

There had been a time when fear of losing arrows controlled Sera.

Now, with only nine left, she had watched an enormous target and refused to waste one because the shot was wrong.

That was not awakening.

It was growth.

They returned to the planning shelf.

This time, the Ash-King’s breath was no longer a description on a map.

Kael could still taste it.

Bitter.

Dry.

Metallic.

Galahad looked up from the table.

”You found it.”

Kael took the water Mara offered.

”It found something else.”

Vance wiped ash from his sleeve.

”Drake.”

Darius spoke.

”Full breath.”

Vance nodded.

Galahad looked toward Kael.

”System?”

Kael opened the memory.

Not an actual recording.

The System’s assessment.

”Superheated particulate and toxic gas. Visibility almost zero. Cloud persists after discharge. Low terrain becomes worse.”

Milo added, ”And the heat gradients are going to make clearing it miserable.”

Galahad looked at him.

”You saw?”

”I smelled.”

Vance looked toward Milo.

”Can you handle it?”

Milo shook his head.

”Not like that.”

No shame.

No bravado.

Then he added, ”But I can make holes in it.”

Everyone listened.

”Small ones. Temporary. I am not clearing the basin. If we know where people need to breathe or where Sera needs a line, I can move enough ash for seconds.”

Sera looked at him.

”How many?”

”Seconds?”

”Lines.”

Milo thought.

”Today?”

She nodded.

”Not many.”

That answer mattered.

Tomorrow was irrelevant if people were trapped now.

Galahad looked at the map.

”We are not attacking today.”

Vance’s face hardened.

”We need those four.”

”I said we are not attacking.”

Galahad pointed toward the ventilation station.

”We recover them.”

Vance stared.

Galahad continued.

”We just watched the Ash-King breathe north of their position. It fed before that.”

”You think that creates a window.”

”I think it creates a possibility.”

Iris stepped forward.

”It landed.”

Everyone looked at her.

”After the breath?”

”No. Before.”

She looked toward Darius.

”Right rear leg.”

Darius nodded.

”One unstable step after landing.”

Vance folded his arms.

”We already know it favors the leg.”

Iris looked at him.

”You knew it favored the leg.”

Darius understood.

”You did not know when.”

Vance went still.

Iris pointed toward the basin.

”It lands. Right rear takes weight. One correction step. That is repeatable until we see otherwise.”

Sera added, ”Left turn in flight.”

Darius nodded.

”More natural than right.”

Vance looked around the group.

Not impressed.

Recalculating.

Kael saw it happen.

Three failed attacks had given Vance facts.

One observation with fresh eyes had begun turning facts into patterns.

That did not mean Kael’s group was better.

It meant they were not carrying the same assumptions.

Vance looked toward the ventilation route.

”How long?”

Mara answered.

”From the southern trench? Twenty-five minutes there if the last ladder still holds.”

”Back?”

”With injured people?”

”Forty.”

Galahad calculated.

”Too long.”

Vance’s jaw tightened.

Kael looked at the map.

”Unless they don’t come back the same way.”

Everyone looked at him.

He traced the ventilation station.

Then the hold.

”What is this?”

Mara leaned closer.

”Exhaust conduit.”

”Passable?”

”No.”

”Why?”

”Too narrow.”

”For a person?”

”For most of it.”

”Most?”

Mara stared at him.

Then looked at Vance.

Vance’s face changed.

”No.”

Mara ignored him.

”The final grate.”

Rask stepped closer.

”What about it?”

”Collapsed inward months ago.”

”So?”

Mara pointed.

”If the survivors are still at the station, they may have tools.”

Vance shook his head.

”The conduit exits above the eastern cut.”

”Which is closer to us than going back through the exposed trench,” Kael said.

Galahad was already following.

”Can we reach the eastern end from here?”

Rask answered.

”Different service tunnel.”

”How long?”

”Fifteen minutes.”

Galahad looked around the table.

”Then we split.”

Darius immediately said, ”No.”

Everyone looked at him.

He pointed toward the southern route.

”Not until we confirm the conduit is passable. Sending a rescue team to the ventilation station based on an exit that may be blocked creates a trap.”

Galahad nodded.

”Correct.”

Kael looked toward Rask.

”Can two people check the eastern end?”

”I can.”

Mara shook her head.

”You don’t know which grate.”

”I know enough.”

”No, you don’t.”

Rask stared at her.

Mara stared back.

Vance interrupted.

”Mara goes.”

Rask looked at him.

”She knows the infrastructure.”

”I know.”

”I go too.”

Vance nodded.

”Good.”

Kael looked at Iris.

She was already lifting her rope.

”I’m going.”

Galahad frowned.

”We need you for the rescue route.”

”You need to know the exit exists first.”

Fair.

Three people.

Rask.

Mara.

Iris.

No prince.

No Darius.

No System solution.

Good.

Kael hated waiting anyway.

While they left to check the conduit, the rest prepared.

Not for the Ash-King.

For four people.

That distinction mattered.

Sera sat on the floor beside the planning table and removed every arrow.

Nine.

She laid them across her thighs.

One by one.

No cracked shaft among the nine.

That stayed separated beside her pack.

Kael watched from several feet away.

Sera inspected fletching.

Shaft.

Head.

Binding.

Then placed each usable arrow back.

When she reached the ninth, Vance spoke from the other side of the room.

”You really do count.”

Sera slid the arrow into place.

”Yes.”

”Why?”

Milo looked up sharply.

Kael did too.

Sera’s expression did not change.

”That answer costs more time than we have.”

Vance considered.

Then nodded.

No push.

Good.

Sera stood.

Vance pointed toward her bow.

”If it takes flight during the rescue, do not shoot the torso.”

”You said that.”

”I am saying it again.”

”Wing root.”

Vance nodded.

”Or mouth if it draws breath.”

”Would an arrow stop it?”

”No.”

”Then why?”

”Pain can disrupt the breath.”

Sera’s eyes narrowed.

”Has it?”

”Once.”

”What arrow?”

”Ballista bolt.”

Sera looked at her bow.

”Useful comparison.”

Vance almost smiled.

”It survived.”

”Not the part I was questioning.”

Milo snorted.

Kael looked toward Darius.

Darius was testing his shoulder.

Badly.

He lifted the sword halfway.

Stopped.

Lowered it.

Kael walked over.

”How bad?”

”Manageable.”

”That word is becoming meaningless.”

Darius looked at him.

”So is fine.”

Kael accepted that.

”Can you fight the Ash-King?”

”Yes.”

”Today?”

Darius stared.

Kael sighed.

”Fine. Wrong question.”

”Yes.”

”You are annoying.”

”Yes.”

Kael almost smiled.

Darius looked toward Vance.

”Do not trust him.”

Kael’s smile disappeared.

”I don’t.”

”You are interested in him.”

”That is different.”

”It can become the same.”

Kael looked toward Vance.

The Iron Vanguard leader stood over the map with Galahad, arguing about how far the rescue group could move before the Ash-King’s patrol became unacceptable.

”Why?”

Darius’s eyes stayed on Vance.

”Men who build loyalty from people abandoned by everyone else are rarely simple.”

Kael thought of Rask beside the stream.

Nobody else wanted us.

The Vanguard gave people somewhere to stand.

”And that makes him dangerous?”

”No.”

Darius finally looked at Kael.

”What people will forgive him for does.”

Kael stored that.

Iris returned eighteen minutes later.

Mara came behind her.

Rask last.

All three were sweating harder than before.

Mara looked at Galahad.

”Conduit is open.”

Everything changed.

”Entirely?” Galahad asked.

”Eastern side. We crawled far enough to confirm airflow and no full collapse. It narrows badly, but a person can get through.”

”Injured?”

”Depends on the injury.”

”Tools?”

”Need to break one internal brace.”

Rask lifted a pry bar.

”Already found one.”

Vance looked toward the southern route.

Then the map.

Then Kael.

”We go now.”

Galahad did not argue this time.

Neither did Kael.

The rescue party would be small.

Vance.

Galahad.

Darius.

Kael.

Sera.

Milo.

Rask.

Mara.

Davin and Eron remained at the forward hold to defend it and prepare the conduit exit.

Veyra came despite Galahad’s first objection.

”My teacher may have used the ventilation station.”

That changed nothing tactically.

It mattered to her.

Galahad allowed it because her one remaining focus discharge could matter if the Ash-King found them.

Iris led.

Before they entered the southern trench, Milo caught Sera’s sleeve.

She looked at him.

He pointed toward the quiver.

”Nine?”

Sera stared.

”Do you want to die?”

”Just checking.”

She pulled his hand from her sleeve.

”If I say a number, you’re carrying me back.”

Milo looked toward the dark trench.

”That threat has weaknesses.”

Sera smiled despite herself.

Then they descended.

The rescue began without a sword drawn.

That somehow made Kael more nervous.

The southern trench opened beneath the inner basin like a scar carved through black rock. Its walls rose above their heads, irregular enough to hide them from most angles but low enough that Kael could occasionally see ash drifting across the opening.

No one spoke unless necessary.

Iris moved first.

Vance several paces behind her.

Kael did not like that arrangement.

Vance knew the Ash-King.

Iris knew terrain.

Both needed the front.

Galahad solved it by walking between them and asking questions in whispers.

”Turn ahead?”

”Left.”

”Visibility?”

”Twenty yards after.”

”Cover?”

”Broken wall.”

”Safe?”

Vance answered, ”Nothing here is safe.”

Galahad looked at him.

”Useful?”

”Yes.”

”Then say useful.”

Kael almost laughed.

The Ash-King’s future murderer and a former mercenary Guild leader were going to kill each other before the monster got a chance.

The trench narrowed.

Ash became deeper around their boots.

Not enough to bury feet.

Enough to soften sound.

Kael understood suddenly why the Ash-King moved so quietly on the ground.

Its own world swallowed noise.

The dead vegetation appeared next.

Roots protruding through cracks had gone gray.

A patch of stubborn moss had dried into powder.

Iris stopped beside a blackened branch trapped against the trench wall.

She did not touch it.

”Recent.”

Vance nodded.

”How?”

”Still warm underneath.”

Kael scanned.

[Residual thermal disturbance: recent]

Estimated passage: uncertain

Useful only in confirming Iris.

Fine.

They moved faster.

The ventilation station appeared ahead as a squat stone structure half buried in the ridge. One side had collapsed. The entrance remained.

Closed.

Mara reached it.

Three knocks.

Pause.

One.

Pause.

Three.

Nothing.

Again.

Three.

One.

Three.

A sound came from inside.

Not the pattern.

Scraping.

Rask moved forward.

”Name.”

A voice answered.

Weak.

”Go away.”

Rask stopped.

Mara covered her mouth.

Vance stepped closer.

”Open the door.”

Silence.

Then:

”Vance?”

”Yes.”

The door moved.

Only an inch.

Something blocked it.

Rask and Darius took positions on either side.

”Push,” Darius said.

The gap widened.

A broken support beam scraped across the floor inside.

Hands appeared.

Someone helping from the other side.

The opening became wide enough.

The first survivor looked terrible.

Ash coated his hair.

Cloth covered his nose and mouth.

One arm hung in a sling made from a torn shirt.

He saw Vance.

Then Rask.

Then Kael.

His eyes widened.

”Why is there a prince?”

Milo whispered, ”Popular question.”

Sera kicked his boot.

The survivor looked beyond them.

”We have two who can’t walk.”

Galahad moved immediately.

”Show us.”

No speeches.

No reunion.

Work.

The four were alive.

That was enough.

One had a fractured leg.

One had severe burns along the back.

Two could move under their own power but were dehydrated and coughing badly.

Mara went straight toward the rear wall.

”Conduit.”

One of the survivors pointed.

”Grate jammed.”

”We know.”

Rask and Darius moved to it.

Kael helped.

The iron had warped.

Heat.

Age.

Pressure.

Rask placed the pry bar.

Darius braced.

Kael found a second grip.

”On three,” Rask whispered.

Darius said, ”One.”

They pulled.

Rask looked at him.

”That was not three.”

”It moved.”

He was right.

They pulled again.

Metal screamed.

Everyone froze.

Outside, nothing.

Kael’s heart hammered.

Milo leaned toward him.

”Subtle.”

Kael glared.

The brace bent.

Rask shoved the bar deeper.

Another pull.

The grate shifted enough.

Mara crawled through first.

Then one walking survivor.

The second.

The injured would need help.

Galahad looked toward the burned one.

”Can he crawl?”

The man beside him shook his head.

”Not far.”

Milo looked at the conduit.

Then closed his eyes.

Kael knew before he spoke.

”No.”

Milo opened one eye.

”No what?”

”You’re about to use Force.”

”Yes.”

”You’re exhausted.”

”Yes.”

”Then—”

”Prince.”

Milo’s voice lost the humor.

”He cannot crawl.”

Kael stopped.

Milo pointed into the conduit.

”I can keep his weight off his burns and move him through.”

”How long?”

”Long enough.”

Sera looked at him.

”That is a lie.”

Milo glanced toward her.

”Yes.”

No one laughed.

Galahad made the decision.

”Do it.”

Milo nodded.

A faint distortion formed beneath the injured man.

Not a full plane.

A cradle.

Thin.

Efficient.

The survivor lifted an inch from the ground.

Milo inhaled sharply.

”Go.”

They began feeding him into the conduit.

Then the light outside changed.

Sera turned first.

Not because she saw the creature.

Because the ash stopped falling straight.

Iris was already at the doorway.

Her eyes went upward.

”Inside.”

Vance froze.

”What?”

”NOW.”

No one argued.

Kael grabbed the survivor nearest him and pulled.

Darius shoved the broken door.

Rask caught the edge.

The sky outside disappeared.

No roar.

No wingbeat.

Only that dry whisper.

Burnt parchment through ash.

Sera’s hand went to her quiver.

One arrow came free.

She nocked.

Vance grabbed the bow.

Sera’s eyes went murderous.

”No shot,” he whispered.

She stared at him.

Then saw it.

A shadow moved through the gray beyond the doorway.

Too fast.

Too high.

No clear body.

No joint.

No throat.

Bad shot.

Sera relaxed the string.

The Ash-King passed overhead.

Silent.

The whole stone station seemed to shrink beneath it.

Ash rushed through the broken wall.

Milo cursed.

His Force cradle flickered.

The injured man inside the conduit dropped half an inch and screamed.

Sera moved.

Not toward the monster.

Toward Milo.

She caught his shoulder.

”Hold him.”

”I know.”

”Hold him.”

Milo’s teeth clenched.

The cradle stabilized.

Kael pressed himself against stone.

His sword remained sheathed.

Every instinct screamed at him to do something.

There was nothing useful to do.

That was harder than fighting.

Outside, the Ash-King disappeared into its own cloud.

Vance leaned near the doorway.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then his face changed.

”Chest.”

Kael saw the pale glow through gray.

Farther away than before.

Still visible.

White through smoke.

The creature was turning.

Toward something else?

Toward them?

Nobody knew.

Milo could not free a hand.

The survivor was halfway through the conduit.

Sera still held one physical arrow.

Nine became eight only if she fired.

She drew.

Not full.

Waiting.

The glow intensified.

Vance whispered, ”If it turns here—”

Sera’s eyes remained on the ash.

”I know.”

Kael felt cold gather beneath his skin.

Darius’s sword came out an inch.

Galahad crouched beside the two remaining survivors.

Everyone had a job.

No one had enough.

Then the glow shifted left.

Away.

The Ash-King exhaled.

The blast struck somewhere beyond the ridge.

The sound arrived like a landslide.

Gray darkness surged across the visible sky.

Heat rolled through the station.

But the main cloud missed them.

Milo nearly collapsed anyway.

The survivor vanished fully into the conduit.

Sera released the bowstring slowly.

Arrow still nocked.

Still hers.

”Move,” Galahad said.

They did.

One survivor at a time.

No celebration.

No relief until everyone was through.

Kael entered the conduit near the end.

Before he pulled himself inside, he looked back once.

Vance remained at the doorway.

Ash rolled past outside.

His face was unreadable.

Not fear.

Not hatred.

Something harder.

Kael called quietly.

”Vance.”

Theron looked back.

”Move.”

For one second, Vance remained where he was.

Then he entered.

The conduit swallowed them.

Behind them, somewhere beyond stone and ash, the Ash-King moved through the Caldera.

Ahead waited four people who were no longer trapped.

Seven still were.

Maybe three more.

And now Kael understood something he had not understood from the observation shelf.

Killing the Ash-King was not going to be one battle.

It was going to be every decision they made before the first real attack ever began.
