The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

By sunrise, Kael had found seven references to the old Vanguard passages beneath the upper shelf and trusted none of them.

The problem was not that Theron Vance had failed to document the routes. The problem was that he had documented too many versions of them.

Three maps disagreed about the depth of the western descent. Two used measurements taken before a partial collapse more than six years earlier. One margin note claimed the lower channel had been sealed because of unstable volcanic gas, while another entry written nearly a year later mentioned specimen recovery from somewhere beyond that supposedly sealed point.

Kael sat at Edwin’s desk with one hand pressed against his forehead and wondered whether Theron had ever met a record he did not want to complicate.

Morning light had begun leaking around the curtains.

Edwin had fallen asleep in the chair near the wall sometime after midnight, though calling what the Steward did sleep seemed generous. His head rested against one hand, his visible eye closed, while three sealed documents remained arranged in perfect order on his lap.

Kael had considered waking him.

Then he remembered how often Edwin had found him asleep over paperwork and chosen not to.

It felt like revenge.

A very small revenge.

A satisfying one.

Kael turned another page.

The old Vanguard route appeared again.

This time beside a heading concerning mineral surveys.

He leaned closer.

Upper Shelf Auxiliary Access — Route C-7.

Below it, Theron had written:

Original maintenance passage constructed around preexisting volcanic fissure. Upper section considered structurally compromised. Lower section remains accessible through secondary descent.

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

Secondary descent.

He traced the note to the next page.

There.

A rough hand-drawn cross-section showed the route cutting downward beneath the upper shelf before splitting.

One branch curved toward old research galleries.

The second descended farther.

Too far.

Kael looked at the depth markings twice.

“That cannot be right.”

Edwin opened his eye.

Kael stopped.

The Steward’s voice came rougher than usual.

“What cannot be right?”

“You were asleep.”

“I was resting my eye.”

“You have one visible eye.”

“Then I was resting it efficiently.”

Kael slid the map across the desk.

Edwin stood, stretched once, and came closer.

Kael pointed.

“This branch.”

Edwin followed the line.

“It descends.”

“I noticed.”

“Farther than the main Caldera chambers.”

“That appears to be what the drawing indicates.”

Kael frowned.

“Theron wrote that the lower branch was abandoned.”

“Then why do you sound concerned?”

“Because three pages later he references equipment being moved through it.”

Edwin looked toward him.

Kael opened the second section.

“There.”

Theron had listed rope lengths, lantern oil, breathing cloth, and water allocations for a team assigned to what he called Lower Survey Route.

No route designation.

No map attached.

Edwin leaned closer.

“You think it is the same passage.”

“I think Theron liked renaming things when the older name became inconvenient.”

“That is not evidence.”

“I know.”

Kael hated that sentence more every day.

He turned another page.

A later entry mentioned a collapsed stone seal repaired with iron pins and mortar.

Then, two months after that:

Seal removed. Passage reopened for controlled access.

Kael sat back.

“So it was not abandoned.”

Edwin folded his arms.

“No.”

“It was reopened.”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

“That part appears absent.”

Kael stared at the page.

Theron had recorded temperature, air quality, structural condition, supply use, and maintenance.

But not purpose.

That omission felt louder than the rest.

A knock sounded.

Neither answered before the door opened.

Darius entered with Grom.

Kael stood too quickly, and his calf punished him for it.

Grom looked at the cane.

Then at Kael.

Kael pointed at him.

“Do not.”

“I did not say anything.”

“You were going to.”

Grom grinned.

Darius moved more slowly than yesterday, though Kael suspected that had less to do with worsening injury and more to do with finally respecting the pain he had been hiding. His face carried more color. His posture remained stiff. The robe had been replaced by plain dark clothing beneath a loose coat, and his sword still did not hang at his side.

Kael noticed that immediately.

He disliked the sight.

Grom dropped a rolled bundle of maps onto the desk.

“We returned before first light.”

Kael’s attention snapped to him.

“The survivor?”

“At the manor infirmary. Dehydrated, leg fracture, smoke exposure. Anwen says he lives if he behaves.”

“That sounds dangerous.”

“For him or Anwen?”

“Yes.”

Edwin moved aside so Grom could spread the field sketches across the desk.

Kael forgot his leg.

The first drawing showed the broken upper shelf.

The second showed the cut pack.

The third marked Joren’s boot prints and the old Vanguard symbol beside the newly opened passage.

Rask’s copy of the mark sat in the margin.

Three diagonal cuts.

One horizontal.

Living route.

Kael stared at it.

“He made this?”

“Probably.”

“Iris?”

“Believes the cut depth and ash displacement fit the same period as the tracks.”

Kael nodded.

“Probably.”

Grom looked at him.

“You are learning.”

“I dislike it.”

“You should.”

Darius sat near the desk.

“What did Theron’s records show?”

Kael pushed the route map toward him.

“Possibly this.”

Grom leaned over the drawing.

His expression changed.

“That is deeper than I expected.”

“Same.”

Darius studied the notes.

“How old?”

“The map is years old. The reopening note is newer.”

Grom looked toward Kael.

“Reopening?”

Kael explained.

The old route had supposedly been sealed.

Then reopened.

Then used under another name.

No reason recorded.

Grom scratched one tusk.

“I hate dead researchers.”

Kael glanced at Theron’s field index.

“Apparently we agree.”

Darius remained focused on the map.

“Gas?”

“Theron mentions ventilation problems.”

“Heat?”

“Variable.”

“Structural risk?”

“High in the upper passage. Less clear below.”

Grom folded his arms.

“Then if we go back, we do not go like yesterday.”

Kael looked up.

“If?”

Grom’s eyes settled on him.

“Yes. If.”

Kael felt his irritation rise.

“We have proof Joren entered alive.”

“Yes.”

“We know the route.”

“No.”

“We know where the entrance is.”

“That is not the same thing.”

Kael leaned back.

Grom continued before he could answer.

“Yesterday was recovery. Today would be penetration into an unknown route beneath an unstable volcanic shelf using maps that may be years out of date.”

Kael looked at Darius.

“Helpful?”

Darius shook his head.

“He is right.”

“Everyone is unusually committed to disappointing me.”

Edwin took a seat.

“It is because you provide so many opportunities.”

Kael ignored him.

“What do you need?”

Grom’s expression sharpened.

Not whether.

What.

That mattered.

“Breathing protection. More rope. Two people who understand unstable underground routes. Someone who can detect mana disturbances without lighting half the tunnel. Better lamps. No one carrying anything explosive.”

Kael nodded.

“Milo?”

“No.”

“He can stabilize collapse with Force.”

“He can also barely walk across the manor without needing to sit afterward.”

Right.

“Sera?”

“No.”

“She has Mana Weaving.”

“She has one stable arrow.”

Kael sighed.

“Iris?”

“Yes.”

“Rask?”

Grom hesitated.

“Yes.”

That surprised Kael.

Grom noticed.

“He followed orders yesterday.”

“That is the minimum.”

“He followed the order he hated most.”

Fair.

Kael looked toward Darius.

“Black Dragon?”

Darius named two members suited for underground movement and defensive work rather than heavy combat, choosing from established personnel already in Blackwood.

Kael accepted both.

No new names.

No unnecessary additions.

“How many total?”

“Eight.”

“That small?”

“Large groups die faster in tunnels.”

Kael hated how sensible that sounded.

“And me?”

Grom’s face went blank.

Kael stared.

“You could pretend to consider it.”

“No.”

“Very encouraging.”

Darius spoke before Kael could continue.

“You stay.”

Kael looked at him.

Darius’s tone remained calm.

“You are still injured.”

“I can walk.”

“With a cane.”

“I can use Ice.”

“Which may trigger a Spirit manifestation you do not understand.”

Kael frowned.

“That is not guaranteed.”

“Exactly.”

The word cut both ways.

Kael looked down at the route map.

Joren had gone deeper.

Kael wanted to go.

That part of him had not changed.

What had changed was that he now understood wanting to go did not automatically make going useful.

He hated that too.

“What time?”

“Two hours,” Grom replied.

Kael looked toward the window.

“Then we decide the route now.”

Darius’s eyes narrowed.

“We?”

Kael pointed at the map.

“I am staying. I am not becoming decorative.”

Grom smiled.

“There he is.”

For the next hour, they worked.

Not heroically.

Not dramatically.

They compared maps.

Old survey marks.

Ventilation routes.

Potential exits.

Kael marked every place Theron’s records mentioned a gas event.

Grom rejected two routes because the recovery team would not have enough rope for both descent and extraction.

Darius insisted the team carry more water than Grom wanted.

Edwin added emergency signal rules.

Kael added one final order.

“If you find evidence Joren continued deeper and the route becomes worse, you stop.”

Rask was not present to object.

Grom looked at him.

“Same as yesterday?”

“Same principle.”

“And if he is alive within reach?”

Kael’s fingers rested against the edge of the map.

“Then use judgment.”

Darius watched him.

Kael knew why.

Yesterday he had wanted clean rules.

Today the situation did not allow one.

That was command too.

Grom rolled the maps.

“We leave in two hours.”

Kael nodded.

Then stopped him.

“If Joren is alive…”

Grom waited.

Kael looked at the old route.

“Bring him home before asking why he went deeper.”

Grom studied him.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

The second descent into the Caldera began under clear skies.

Rask considered that insulting.

The mountain had no right to look peaceful.

He walked behind Iris through the broken upper shelf while Grom led the rest of the recovery team down toward the old Vanguard entrance.

Yesterday’s markers remained in place.

The cut pack.

The rope scrape.

The scratched symbol.

Living route.

Rask touched it once as he passed.

Joren had known someone might follow.

That meant he had expected to be found.

Or hoped.

Rask preferred the first interpretation.

He knew better than to trust preference now.

The passage beyond the opening dropped sharply.

Old steps had been carved into stone in places, but years of heat and mineral runoff had eaten at their edges. In others, the route became little more than an angled shelf beside a deeper fissure.

They moved slowly.

No one complained.

The deeper they went, the stranger the air became.

Not hotter.

Uneven.

One section breathed heat against their faces.

The next carried cold enough to dampen the stone.

Iris stopped often.

Checked cracks.

Watched dust.

Listened.

Rask had once thought scouts exaggerated how much they could learn from silence.

He no longer thought that.

At the first old junction, she raised a fist.

Everyone stopped.

A strip of cloth hung from an iron pin in the wall.

Rask knew it before touching.

“Joren.”

Grom looked over.

“Certain?”

“His cloak lining.”

Iris examined the knot.

“Deliberate.”

The cloth pointed left.

They followed.

The route narrowed.

Grom had to turn his shoulders sideways through one section, muttering insults about humans designing tunnels without considering civilized body proportions.

Nobody laughed much.

Farther in, the passage opened into a maintenance chamber.

Old iron hooks lined one wall.

A broken crate sat beneath them.

And beside it lay blood.

Fresh enough to matter.

Rask’s chest tightened.

Iris crouched.

“Not fresh today.”

“How old?”

“One or two days.”

“That is him.”

“Probably.”

Rask closed his eyes.

Probably.

He hated that word.

Then Iris touched the wall.

Another mark.

Not Vanguard code this time.

Letters.

Scratched with a blade.

LOWER AIR BAD

Rask stared.

Joren’s hand.

He knew the blocky writing from inventory boards and training notes.

“He wrote it.”

Grom stepped closer.

“Can you prove that?”

“Yes.”

Grom nodded.

Good enough.

Below the warning, a second line had been added.

WATER EAST

Iris looked toward the right-hand passage.

“Then he was still thinking.”

Rask swallowed.

Alive enough to warn others.

Alive enough to seek water.

That mattered.

The eastern passage descended less steeply.

After twenty minutes they found the first abandoned Vanguard station.

Small.

Four bunks carved into alcoves.

A rusted stove.

Shelves.

An old water collection basin fed by condensation running down the wall.

Someone had used it recently.

The cup beside the basin was wet.

Rask moved toward it too quickly.

Grom caught his shoulder.

“Stop.”

Rask froze.

Iris went first.

No traps.

No collapse.

No gas.

She lifted the cup.

Smelled it.

“Used recently.”

Rask looked around.

A blanket had been pulled from one bunk.

Bandage cloth lay on the floor.

Blood again.

Less this time.

A torn strip from a shirt.

Joren had treated himself.

Rask’s hope sharpened into something dangerous.

“He is close.”

Iris looked toward the far exit.

“Closer.”

They followed the signs.

A bare footprint once.

Then boot again.

Joren had removed one shoe at some point.

Why?

Rask found the answer ten minutes later.

The boot lay beside a wall.

Sole split open.

He picked it up.

Inside, the heel was dark with blood.

Grom watched him.

“He kept moving barefoot?”

“One foot.”

Rask placed the boot inside his pack.

No one questioned why.

The route turned.

Narrowed.

Then the smell changed.

Metal.

Sulfur.

Something sweet beneath both.

Iris stopped so hard Rask almost hit her.

“Back.”

Everyone moved.

No hesitation.

The breathing cloths came up.

Grom watched the passage.

“Gas?”

“Yes.”

“Visible?”

“No.”

That made it worse.

They retreated to the last intersection.

Rask stared toward the blocked direction.

“The water route goes through there.”

“Then Joren passed it.”

“Maybe before it worsened.”

Iris shook her head.

“His blood is on this side.”

Rask went still.

Grom understood first.

“He crossed after the gas was active.”

“Or he found another way.”

Rask searched the wall.

Old route markings.

There.

A carved triangle beside a crack.

His heart jumped.

“Maintenance bypass.”

Grom looked at him.

“Usable?”

“I do not know.”

“Excellent.”

Rask forced the old stone latch.

Nothing.

Again.

Grom stepped beside him.

“Move.”

The goblin drove the butt of his spear against the edge.

Stone shifted inward.

A narrow side passage opened.

Cold air touched Rask’s face.

Iris tested it.

“Better.”

They entered one at a time.

The bypass had never been meant for travel.

More than once, Grom removed pieces of armor to fit through.

The walls scraped shoulders.

Rope caught.

One man had to crawl.

Rask stopped caring.

Then they found another mark.

A single line.

Joren had been there.

Alive.

The bypass emerged beyond the gas pocket into a deeper chamber.

The chamber was not natural.

Rask knew that immediately.

Old stone supports reinforced the walls.

Iron rails ran across the floor.

A collapsed lifting frame occupied one side.

Theron’s hidden lower route.

Not abandoned.

Used.

Recently enough that some metal showed less corrosion than the rest.

Grom saw it too.

“So this is what he reopened.”

Rask looked around.

“What was he doing down here?”

“Later.”

Grom’s voice hardened.

“Joren first.”

Right.

Rask hated himself for forgetting even for a breath.

They searched the chamber.

Iris found the trail near the far wall.

Then stopped.

“Two sets.”

Rask stared.

“What?”

“Joren’s.”

She pointed.

Then another.

Larger prints.

Older?

Newer?

Rask could not tell.

Iris could.

“These were here before him.”

Grom’s grip tightened on his spear.

“Human?”

“Booted.”

No monster.

No sudden enemy.

Still, the discovery changed the room.

Someone else had used this route.

Recently enough for tracks to survive.

Rask looked toward the old equipment.

“Vanguard?”

“Maybe.”

Grom’s eyes moved across the chamber.

“Not our problem today.”

They continued.

The trail led through another door.

This one had been forced from the inside.

Beyond it, the route climbed slightly.

Then came a sound.

Everyone stopped.

Rask held his breath.

At first he heard nothing.

Then—

Metal scraping stone.

Once.

Pause.

Again.

Rask ran.

Grom caught him too late to stop the first three steps.

“Rask!”

He did not care.

The passage opened into a small chamber where part of the ceiling had collapsed.

A slab pinned something beneath it.

No.

Someone.

Joren.

Rask stopped so hard pain shot through his knees.

For one second he could not understand what he saw.

Joren lay on his side beneath the edge of the slab, one leg trapped from thigh down. His face had gone gray beneath dirt and dried blood. One foot was bare and wrapped in torn cloth. His sword lay within reach, the blade chipped from striking stone.

He had been scraping it against the floor.

Making noise.

Joren looked up.

His eyes barely focused.

Rask moved closer.

“Joren.”

The man blinked.

Then laughed once.

It broke into coughing.

“Took you…”

His voice disappeared.

Rask knelt.

“We came.”

Joren looked toward Grom.

“You brought the goblin.”

Grom snorted.

“Good. He still has enough strength to be rude.”

Iris was already checking the ceiling.

“Do not touch the slab yet.”

Rask’s hands hovered uselessly.

Joren looked at him.

“How many?”

Rask understood.

He hated that question.

“One recovered alive.”

Joren closed his eyes.

“One dead.”

His jaw tightened.

“Others?”

“Confirmed already.”

Joren lay still.

Then opened his eyes again.

“Theron?”

Rask swallowed.

“Dead.”

Something passed across Joren’s face.

Not surprise.

Not grief alone.

Something tangled.

“Good?”

The word came out almost like a question.

Rask did not answer.

Joren’s eyes closed again.

Grom crouched near the trapped leg.

“Can you feel this?”

He pressed above the knee.

Joren nodded.

Below.

Nothing.

Grom looked toward the healer.

The healer’s face tightened.

Rask saw it.

“No.”

The healer looked at him.

“I did not say anything.”

“You did.”

Joren opened his eyes.

“Leg’s bad.”

Rask looked at him.

“You are alive.”

“Observation.”

“You can lose the leg.”

Joren’s mouth twitched.

“Generous.”

Rask almost hit him.

Instead he gripped Joren’s shoulder.

“You are coming home.”

Joren looked toward the ceiling.

“Not yet.”

Grom’s eyes narrowed.

“What?”

Joren tried to move one hand.

Failed.

Then pointed weakly toward the far wall.

“Box.”

Rask followed the gesture.

A small iron case sat half hidden behind fallen rock.

Grom’s expression changed.

“No.”

Joren coughed.

“Not core.”

Rask looked sharply at him.

“You know about the core?”

Joren gave him a tired look.

“Everyone knows about the damned core.”

Fair.

Grom stayed focused.

“What is in the box?”

Joren breathed through pain.

“Records.”

Rask froze.

“Theron’s?”

A nod.

“Why did you go after them?”

Joren closed his eyes.

No answer.

Rask leaned closer.

“Joren.”

The man opened them again.

“Because he told me to.”

The chamber went silent.

Rask stared.

“When?”

“Before final descent.”

Rask’s stomach turned.

Theron had sent him here.

Before the Ash-King died.

Before the collapse.

Before all of them knew how much he had hidden.

“To recover records?”

“Destroy if needed.”

Grom’s face hardened.

“What records?”

Joren looked toward the iron case.

“Lower-route trials.”

Rask felt cold despite the heat beneath the stone.

“What trials?”

Joren’s breathing roughened.

“Core.”

One word.

Enough.

Grom stood.

“Later.”

Rask looked at him.

“But—”

“We get him out first.”

The certainty in Grom’s voice cut through everything.

Correct.

Joren first.

Questions after breathing.

Iris checked the ceiling.

“We can lift the slab if we brace here and here.”

Grom looked toward the supports.

“Enough?”

“If it holds.”

“That was not my question.”

“It is the only answer.”

Grom grunted.

They worked.

Rope went around the slab.

Two supports were cut to length from old timber.

Grom placed himself where the leverage mattered most.

Earth-infused Aura settled through his stance.

The floor seemed to accept him.

Not magic thrown outward.

Strength rooted downward.

“On my count.”

Rask took the rope.

Others joined.

“One.”

The healer positioned near Joren.

“Two.”

Iris watched the ceiling.

“Three.”

Grom lifted.

The slab moved.

An inch.

Joren screamed.

Rask nearly let go.

“Pull!”

He pulled.

The slab rose higher.

The healer dragged Joren’s trapped leg free.

Blood came with it.

Too much.

“Down!”

Grom lowered the slab.

It struck stone hard enough to shake dust from the ceiling.

The healer was already working.

Tourniquet.

Pressure.

Bandage.

Joren’s face went white.

His hand grabbed Rask’s sleeve.

“Do not let them…”

Rask leaned closer.

“What?”

“Leave records.”

Rask looked toward the iron case.

Grom heard.

“So we take it.”

Iris stared at him.

Grom looked back.

“One box.”

She considered.

Then nodded.

“Light enough.”

Rask crawled toward it.

The case had no lock.

Inside were oilskin bundles.

Ledgers.

Loose notes.

One sealed packet marked with Theron’s personal field sigil.

Rask felt sick.

Theron had hidden more.

Of course he had.

He closed the case.

Not here.

Not now.

Joren was lifted onto a stretcher.

His injured leg had been immobilized as well as possible.

The healer looked at Grom.

“We need to move.”

“Can he survive the climb?”

“Better than staying.”

Good enough.

They started back.

Slow.

Painfully slow.

Joren drifted in and out.

Once he woke and asked whether they had found his boot.

Rask showed it to him.

Joren stared.

“Thought I lost that.”

“You did.”

“Good boot.”

“The sole is split.”

“Still good.”

Rask almost laughed.

Instead his throat closed.

They reached the bypass.

Then the gas section.

Then the old water station.

At every stop, Grom recalculated.

Water.

Breathing.

Light.

Time.

No one rushed.

No one chased the satisfaction of getting out quickly.

Joren stayed alive because they kept choosing the boring decision.

Rask noticed that.

Theron would have hated it.

That thought hurt.

Then helped.

By dusk, they reached the upper shelf.

Open sky appeared above them.

Joren opened his eyes.

For a moment he just stared.

Then tears ran sideways into his hair.

He said nothing.

Neither did Rask.

They carried him out.

Blackwood learned before Kael did.

That annoyed him.

He was in the manor courtyard when the first shout came from the western road.

Then another.

Someone ran through the gate.

“Recovery team!”

Kael turned.

His cane struck the stone harder than necessary as he moved.

Edwin followed.

Lily appeared from the side corridor.

Darius came slower behind them.

No one told Kael not to hurry.

That was how he knew they were worried too.

The first horse entered.

Then another.

Iris.

Captain Rolan.

Grom.

Rask walked beside a stretcher.

Kael stopped.

His eyes went to the face.

Joren.

Alive.

The word hit before anything else.

Alive.

Pale.

Dirty.

Barely conscious.

But alive.

Kael exhaled.

He had not realized he had been holding his breath since the gate opened.

Mistress Anwen pushed past him.

“Move.”

Kael moved.

Everyone moved.

The stretcher went straight toward the infirmary.

Rask stayed beside it until Anwen pointed at him.

“You are not helping.”

Rask stopped.

She disappeared inside with Joren and the healer.

The door closed.

Kael looked at Grom.

The old goblin appeared exhausted.

Ash covered his armor again.

A fresh scrape crossed one cheek.

Kael wanted to ask everything at once.

Instead:

“How bad?”

Grom looked toward the infirmary door.

“Leg.”

Kael’s chest tightened.

“Will he keep it?”

“Do not know.”

“Anything else?”

“Dehydration. Blood loss. Gas exposure. Stubbornness.”

Kael nodded.

“Then he fits Blackwood.”

Grom snorted.

Rask stood nearby holding something.

A boot.

Kael stared at it.

Rask looked down.

“Long story.”

“I believe you.”

Then Kael noticed the iron case.

Two Black Dragon members carried it between them.

Every instinct sharpened.

“What is that?”

Grom’s expression lost its humor.

“Another problem.”

Kael looked toward Rask.

Rask met his eyes.

“Theron sent Joren into the lower route before the final descent.”

Kael went still.

“For what?”

“Records.”

Silence spread through the courtyard.

Darius moved closer.

“What records?”

Rask looked toward the iron case.

“Lower-route trials.”

Kael’s hand tightened around the cane.

“Core trials?”

Rask nodded.

Kael closed his eyes for one second.

Theron.

Even dead, the man kept opening doors.

Kael looked toward the infirmary.

Joren alive.

That came first.

Always.

“What did Joren say?”

“Not much. He was trapped.”

“Did he know what the records contained?”

“Some.”

“Did he go voluntarily?”

Rask hesitated.

“Yes.”

Kael noticed the hesitation.

“But?”

Rask looked exhausted.

“Theron ordered him to recover them or destroy them if the route became compromised.”

Kael stared at the case.

Destroy them.

That mattered.

Too much.

Edwin stepped closer.

“We secure it.”

Kael nodded.

“Same restricted archive rules as Theron’s field index.”

Darius looked toward the case.

“No one reads it alone.”

“Yes.”

“Copies before review.”

“Yes.”

“Original sealed afterward.”

“Yes.”

Kael looked toward Grom.

“You found anything else?”

Grom’s expression changed.

“Old equipment.”

“Recent?”

“Recent enough.”

Kael frowned.

“Vanguard?”

“Unknown.”

Iris joined them.

She looked as tired as Grom.

“Two sets of older boot prints in the lower chamber. Not Joren’s. They predated him.”

Kael felt the first thread of something new.

He cut it immediately.

“Not tonight.”

Iris nodded.

Good.

He had learned something.

Not every mystery required immediate pursuit.

Joren was alive.

That was the work they had gone to finish.

Finish that first.

The infirmary door opened.

Anwen stepped outside.

Everyone turned.

Her face gave nothing.

Kael hated healers.

“He lives.”

Rask sat down on the nearest bench.

Not gracefully.

His body simply stopped holding him upright.

Kael’s grip loosened.

Anwen continued.

“The leg is badly damaged. Bone crush. Nerve injury. Blood flow was compromised too long.”

Kael looked toward the door.

“Can you save it?”

Anwen’s silence lasted half a breath too long.

“I do not know.”

Rask stared at the ground.

Kael nodded.

No false promise.

“How long before he wakes?”

“He already woke once and insulted me.”

Grom grinned.

“Excellent sign.”

Anwen did not smile.

“He is not safe yet.”

The humor died.

“He needs rest. Fluids. Monitoring. If the leg worsens, I will make a decision.”

Kael understood what decision.

He did not ask her to explain it in the courtyard.

“Do what keeps him alive.”

Rask looked up.

Anwen nodded.

“I planned to.”

She went back inside.

The door closed again.

Kael stood there.

Three missing.

Then two.

Then one.

Now none.

Not in the ledger.

Not anymore.

One recovered alive from the eastern gallery.

One confirmed dead from the rear group.

Joren recovered alive from the lower Vanguard route.

The Caldera still had unanswered questions.

Theron still had buried records.

The Draconic Core remained under guard.

The Iron Vanguard still had to decide what it was without its founder.

But the missing-person list was finished.

Kael looked toward Edwin.

The Steward already understood.

They returned to the office after dark.

Edwin opened the ledger.

Kael stood beside him.

The page contained the three names.

The first already read:

Recovered alive.

The second:

Confirmed deceased.

The final line remained:

Joren — Missing.

Edwin dipped the pen.

He paused.

Then drew a line through the word.

Not the name.

Only the status.

Beneath it he wrote:

Recovered alive. Medical treatment ongoing.

Kael stared at the words.

There.

Finished.

No open name.

Not one.

Edwin closed the ledger.

The sound felt heavier than it should have.

Kael leaned against the cane.

For several seconds neither man spoke.

Then Edwin looked toward the iron case now secured on the opposite side of the room.

“The Caldera is not finished with us.”

Kael looked at it.

“No.”

Theron’s hidden records waited inside.

So did whatever truth had made him order Joren to recover or destroy them.

That mattered.

Tomorrow.

Not tonight.

Tonight, for the first time since the survivors returned to Blackwood, no family remained trapped beneath the word missing.

Kael looked toward the dark window.

The Ash-King was dead.

Theron was dead.

The survivors had returned.

The dead had names.

The missing had been found.

One part of the Caldera had finally ended.

Kael let it end.

Then he turned away from the sealed case and went to see whether Joren was still awake.
