The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

The ten minutes Galahad gave them did not feel like rest. They felt like the kind of silence that came before a door broke. Across the basin, the Ash-King remained low on three reliable limbs and one ruined rear leg, its massive corpse-like frame half hidden by drifting steam. The damaged left wing sagged closer to the ground than the right, and every few breaths the torn membrane twitched as if the creature still expected it to work properly. Smoke leaked from the hollow spines along its back, but the broken vent near its shoulder no longer breathed in rhythm with the others. It coughed soot in short violent bursts that rolled down its ribs and disappeared beneath its belly. The creature looked wounded enough that a less experienced group might have mistaken damage for weakness. Nobody behind the western shelf made that mistake.

Kael sat with his back against warm basalt while trying not to cough. Every time he failed, his ribs reminded him what the Ash-King’s tail, the falling stone, and the last several days had done to his body. The clean cloth Veyra had given him was already gray around his mouth. He could taste ash through it anyway. The System continued offering warnings about respiratory exposure and accumulated trauma, but none of them contained anything useful enough to justify staring at them. Kael closed the interface and watched Darius instead.

Darius sat three yards away while Galahad tightened the support around his shoulder. The older man’s face remained calm, but the tendons in his neck stood out each time the cloth crossed the reopened wound. His sword lay across his thighs rather than beside him, close enough that his good hand could find it without looking. When Galahad finished the knot, Darius rotated the shoulder less than an inch and stopped immediately.

”That bad?” Kael asked.

Darius looked at him. ”You are coughing blood into cloth.”

Kael glanced down. There was a faint red smear mixed with gray ash. ”That was not my question.”

”It was my answer.”

Galahad pointed between them. ”Both of you stop competing in the least useful contest I have ever supervised. You are damaged. Accept it and plan around it.”

Theron Vance sat farther down the shelf with his bent weapon across his knees. He had wedged part of it against a crack in the basalt and was using body weight rather than brute force to straighten the worst of the bend. The metal moved slightly, enough that it might remain usable, though Kael doubted any smith would have called the result repaired. Theron paused after one attempt and looked toward the basin. His gaze lingered on the place where the Ash-King had taken the dead Vanguard fighter’s body.

He had not spoken about it.

Neither had anyone else.

The silence around that death felt different from the silence around the missing fighter. One was finished. The other was not.

Iris was the one who broke that distinction.

She had spent most of the ten-minute pause near the edge of the western shelf, not watching the Ash-King directly but studying the broken terrain between their current position and the place where the Gravewind had swallowed the second Vanguard fighter. She moved back toward Kael now and crouched beside him without taking her eyes off the lower rocks.

”I think he’s alive.”

Vance stood before she finished speaking. ”Where?”

Iris pointed toward a jagged section of basalt downslope, roughly forty yards from the shelf and partially hidden behind a new fissure. ”I saw movement twice. Not enough to say it was him. Then I saw ash fall from underneath a slab against the wind.”

”That could be gas.”

”It could.”

Theron was already reaching for his weapon.

Galahad stepped in front of him. ”Wait.”

Vance stared at him. ”If he’s alive—”

”I heard her. I also heard could.”

Kael pushed himself upright. The motion sent pain through his side, but he ignored it and crouched near the edge. He could not see a body. The terrain below had become a mess of tilted stone, gray ash, steam vents, and dark cracks glowing faintly red where the last rupture had exposed deeper heat.

Blood.

He closed his eyes and reached with Blood Sensing.

At first the basin overwhelmed him. The Ash-King had bled across too much ground. Cinder-dark draconic blood remained hot in several places, and its strange density pressed against Kael’s senses like a dozen false signals. Human blood felt smaller. Warmer in a familiar way. He narrowed his awareness instead of expanding it.

One pulse.

Then another.

Faint.

Not moving much.

Kael opened his eyes and pointed lower than Iris had.

”There.”

Iris followed his finger. ”Under the slab?”

”Something alive is bleeding there.”

”Human?”

Kael hesitated. ”Probably.”

Vance looked at him sharply.

Kael met his gaze. ”Probably is what I have.”

Theron did not argue.

Galahad turned toward the basin and considered the distance. ”We do not restart the attack to save one man.”

Vance’s expression hardened immediately.

Galahad continued before he could speak. ”We rescue him while continuing the attack we were already going to make. Different thing. If we turn seven people toward a hole and forget the Ash-King exists, we give it more bodies.”

Theron’s anger did not disappear, but it changed shape. ”What do you need?”

There it was again. Kael had seen that trait in Vance several times now. He could push hard until someone gave him a reason strong enough to matter. Then he changed.

Galahad pointed toward Iris. ”She reaches him. Veyra goes with her because her focus is gone and she can help move weight without taking one of our main frontline fighters. Kael confirms the blood trail until they are close enough to see him. Then Kael returns to the center.”

Iris frowned. ”I don’t need an escort.”

”You are not getting one. You are getting another pair of hands.”

Veyra picked up the discarded spear she had been carrying since losing her focus. ”I feel valued.”

”You should. Darius, Vance, Kael, and I keep the Ash-King occupied. Sera stays mobile rather than choosing one fixed firing perch again. The creature has learned where she shoots from.”

Sera was still sitting with her physical bow across her knees. Mana Motes hovered around her right hand in a faint loose cluster. She had been holding them there without trying to form anything, exactly as she had said she would. At Galahad’s words, she let them go rather than wasting concentration.

”It has learned more than that,” she said.

Everyone looked at her.

Sera pointed toward Kael. ”It stopped before his second Rime-Step because it knew the distance. It attacked Veyra after she broke the vent. It went after me after I disrupted its breath twice. It is choosing people.”

Darius nodded. ”Correct.”

Kael looked across the basin.

The Ash-King was watching them.

Tiny white pupils inside sunken black eyes.

Not raging.

Watching.

Galahad’s mouth tightened. ”Then assume it understands roles, not names. If someone hurts it in a new way, expect retaliation.”

Vance glanced at Sera’s empty quiver. ”Can you shoot?”

”Yes.”

”How many?”

Sera looked at her right hand. ”Wrong question now.”

Theron considered that.

Then nodded.

No one explained Mana Weaving to him. There was no time, and Sera barely understood her own awakening well enough to teach anybody.

Galahad looked toward the Ash-King once more. ”Ten minutes are over. We do not chase a kill. Our goals are the missing man, one more vent if the opening is clean, and more damage to the rear leg. If the battlefield changes, the plan changes with it. Nobody stays because they like the plan more than they like breathing.”

Kael drew his sword.

The Ash-King rose at the same time.

Nobody had signaled.

Nobody had moved into the basin yet.

The creature simply stood.

Its right rear leg dragged beneath it, but the other three limbs compensated with disturbing ease. The tattered left wing unfolded only halfway before stopping. The right wing opened fully and remained extended, not for flight but balance.

Darius saw the same thing Kael did.

”Do not treat it like a four-legged animal anymore.”

Vance narrowed his eyes. ”It’s using the wing as a counterweight.”

The Ash-King took one step.

Then another.

Faster.

Galahad shouted, ”MOVE!”

The ten-minute pause ended.

Iris and Veyra broke left immediately, descending toward the suspected survivor. Galahad moved down the center behind Kael and Darius, while Vance took the right side so the Ash-King could not cover all three frontline paths with one charge. Sera stayed five yards farther back than Galahad and did not attempt to form an arrow yet.

The Ash-King accelerated.

Its ruined rear leg should have made the charge clumsy.

Instead the creature changed how it ran.

The good rear leg drove harder. Both forelimbs struck in uneven sequence. The right wing extended sideways, dragging air and stabilizing the enormous torso each time the wounded rear quarter threatened to collapse.

Kael felt dread rather than admiration.

It was adapting around the injury.

The Ash-King reached them sooner than expected.

Darius shouted, ”LEFT!”

Kael moved left because Darius had seen something he had not.

The Ash-King’s head snapped right.

It had feinted with the body.

Its jaws went for Vance.

Theron barely got his bent weapon across his chest before the lower jaw struck. He did not block the bite. He hit the side of the snout while throwing himself under the head, turning a clean catch into a glancing impact.

One tooth caught his shoulder armor.

Metal tore.

Vance hit the ground.

The Ash-King turned to finish him.

Darius attacked the injured rear leg.

Not because it was nearest.

Because it forced a choice.

His sword drove into the open joint and struck the broken remains of Sera’s physical arrowhead still buried inside. The Ash-King’s leg buckled.

Its head stopped turning toward Vance.

Good.

Kael came from the opposite side and used Frostbite Edge instead of another expensive thrust. The cold-coated blade struck the cracked scales at the base of the damaged dorsal vent. Ice spread into the fractures.

The Ash-King whipped its neck around.

Kael released his attack immediately.

No greed.

He moved.

The jaws closed on empty air.

Then the creature exhaled a short burst of ash directly across the ground.

Not full Choking Cloud.

A close weapon.

Kael threw himself behind a stone rise, but the front of the blast clipped his legs. Superheated ash struck his boots and lower armor.

Heat punched through leather.

Kael shouted and rolled.

His left calf burned.

Not enough to stop movement.

Enough to matter.

The System opened without invitation.

[Thermal injury detected]

[Left lower leg: superficial-to-moderate burn]

He dismissed it.

Galahad was already moving toward him.

”I can stand.”

”I did not ask.”

”Then why are you coming?”

”To see if that remains true.”

Kael stood.

Pain flared.

Still standing.

Galahad immediately left him and turned toward the basin.

That was the kind of help Kael trusted now.

Across the battlefield, Iris and Veyra reached the slab.

The Ash-King saw them.

Sera saw the Ash-King see them.

Its head turned left.

Tiny white pupil fixed on the two women crouching over broken rock.

Sera raised her bow.

No arrow.

Her right hand opened.

Mana Motes gathered.

Not all at once.

She drew them toward herself deliberately, resisting the instinct to rush.

Point.

Shaft.

Balance.

Rear.

A pale Construct Arrow formed between her fingers.

Less ragged than the first.

Still trembling.

Sera nocked.

The Ash-King took one step toward Iris.

Then another.

Sera drew.

No shot.

The throat was closed.

The eye angle poor.

The damaged rear joint partly hidden.

She waited.

Kael saw her waiting and felt something like relief.

Awakening had not made her stupid.

The Ash-King’s chest expanded.

Sera’s expression changed.

There.

The creature was preparing to breathe toward Iris and Veyra.

The cracks in its neck brightened from ember-red toward pale white.

Sera adjusted for the moving ash.

Milo’s lesson had become part of her now.

Do not fight bad air.

Read it.

She released.

The Construct Arrow crossed the basin.

It held together better than before.

The Ash-King moved its head.

Sera had not anticipated enough.

The shot missed the mouth.

It struck the side of the jaw and shattered harmlessly.

The Ash-King breathed.

Ash exploded toward the rescue pair.

Iris moved before the full cloud arrived.

She grabbed Veyra by the back of her coat and used Wind through Brush Step, making her own body lighter while throwing both of them behind the broken slab.

The first wave passed over the stone.

The second curled around it.

Veyra pressed herself flat.

Iris covered her mouth.

The trapped Vanguard fighter beneath the slab screamed.

Alive.

Definitely alive.

Theron heard.

Vance rose from the ground with one shoulder plate hanging loose.

He looked toward the scream.

The Ash-King stood between him and his man.

Kael saw the decision forming.

”Theron.”

Vance looked at him.

”If you run straight there, it follows you.”

Vance’s jaw tightened.

”I know.”

”Then make it follow you somewhere else.”

For one heartbeat, Theron looked almost offended.

Then he smiled without warmth.

”Prince.”

Kael frowned.

”What?”

”That sounded useful.”

Theron turned and ran right.

Not toward the trapped fighter.

Away.

He struck his bent weapon against basalt three times.

The same kind of metallic noise that had lured the Ash-King earlier.

The creature’s head turned.

Vance struck again.

Harder.

Then shouted, ”COME ON!”

The Ash-King did.

Not because of the insult.

Because Theron had injured it repeatedly and now offered himself in the open.

It charged.

Vance ran.

Kael understood a moment later.

Theron was dragging it away from Iris and Veyra.

No speech.

No command.

Just work.

Galahad saw too.

”Darius, support him. Kael, rescue side.”

Darius moved after Vance.

Kael broke left.

His burned calf objected every third step.

He ignored it.

Sera shifted position instead of following any single group.

Good.

She needed lines, not proximity.

Kael reached Iris and Veyra as the second ash wave thinned.

Veyra was already levering the stone with the shaft of the spear.

”This is going badly.”

Kael grabbed the edge. ”That seems broad.”

”Specifically, his leg is trapped.”

The Vanguard fighter lay beneath a tilted slab from the waist down. Blood covered one side of his face, but his eyes remained open.

He saw Kael.

”You again.”

Kael frowned. ”Do I know you?”

”No.”

”Then what does that mean?”

”Prince keeps appearing underground.”

Reasonable.

Iris crouched beside the trapped leg.

”Stone did not crush it fully.”

”Can we pull?”

”No.”

Veyra said, ”We lift.”

Kael looked at the slab.

Large.

Too large.

Then at the cracks beneath it.

The System opened.

[Load distribution unstable]

[Primary weight borne at two contact points]

[Suggested manipulation: alter lower-right support geometry]

Not an answer.

A clue.

Kael placed one hand against the smaller stone beneath the right edge.

”Ice Wedge.”

Cold formed underneath instead of trying to lift the entire slab.

The wedge grew.

Slowly.

Kael’s mana burned.

The slab moved less than an inch.

Enough for Iris to see.

”Again.”

Kael pushed.

The Ice Wedge thickened.

Steam formed immediately around it.

The stone rose another inch.

Veyra jammed the spear shaft deeper.

”Iris.”

Iris grabbed the fighter beneath both arms.

”On Kael.”

Kael clenched his teeth and forced the ice wider.

”Now.”

Iris pulled.

The fighter screamed.

Veyra levered.

The trapped leg came free.

Kael cut the spell.

The slab dropped.

The Ice Wedge shattered under it.

The impact sent broken frost and stone chips across the ground.

”Move him.”

Iris took one side.

Veyra the other.

The Vanguard fighter tried to stand.

His injured leg folded.

”No,” Iris said.

He tried again anyway.

She looked at him.

”Do that once more and I will hit you.”

The man stared.

Veyra nodded. ”She means it.”

They dragged him toward a higher basalt pocket.

Kael turned.

The Ash-King was no longer where Vance had led it.

His stomach dropped.

”Where—”

A shadow passed over them.

Not flight.

A jump.

The Ash-King had used its good rear leg and both forelimbs to launch onto a basalt rise, the right wing beating once for balance while the damaged left wing snapped uselessly behind it.

The creature landed above them.

Grounded did not mean slow.

Grounded did not mean earthbound in the way they had assumed.

The Ash-King dropped from the rise.

Kael pushed Iris and the injured fighter forward.

Veyra jumped clear.

The landing struck hard enough to throw all four of them.

Kael hit his burned leg first.

Pain flashed white.

He rolled onto his back.

The Ash-King towered above.

Its corpse-like chest expanded.

The cracked neck scales glowed.

Too close.

No room to outrun a full breath.

Kael raised one hand.

Frost gathered.

Not enough for Crescent Blizzard without wrecking himself.

Frost Wall would fail.

Ice Wedge would not matter.

Think.

The Ash-King opened its mouth.

A sword struck its lower jaw from the side.

Darius.

He had followed the jump.

His damaged shoulder made the first impact weaker than usual, but the angle mattered more than force. The sword redirected the opening jaw just enough that the head turned.

The ash blast fired past Kael.

It struck the basalt shelf twenty feet away.

Stone disappeared behind gray.

Darius paid immediately.

The Ash-King’s foreleg hit him.

Not claw first.

Wrist.

A blunt sideways strike.

Darius crossed his sword in front of his body.

Aura reinforced the guard.

The impact broke the guard anyway.

Darius flew.

He hit the ground, rolled twice, and stopped against a rock.

His sword remained in his hand.

His body did not rise.

Kael’s blood went cold.

”DARIUS!”

The Ash-King turned toward him.

Sera saw.

Mana Motes gathered.

She had less time now.

Her Construct Arrow formed faster.

Better.

The tip remained too broad.

She changed it.

Compressed.

Narrow.

Dense.

The same instinct from the last shot.

Not a perfected form.

A direction.

The arrow’s structure tightened until the point looked almost needle-thin.

Sera’s hand shook from the cost.

She drew.

The Ash-King lowered its head toward Darius.

She fired.

The arrow struck the damaged dorsal vent.

Not the eye.

Not the throat.

The vent.

The dense point entered the crack Kael had widened earlier.

For a fraction of a second, the Construct Arrow remained whole inside the hollow spine.

Then it collapsed.

Mana released inside the damaged structure.

The vent ruptured.

The effect was immediate.

Soot burst sideways.

The Ash-King’s entire torso seized.

Its chest glow flared white.

Then dimmed.

Then flared again.

The creature staggered.

Kael’s System opened.

[Second major dorsal vent failure detected]

[Internal pressure regulation deteriorating]

[Respiratory output instability increasing]

Warning: physiological destabilization may increase attack unpredictability

That was not the message Kael wanted.

”Sera!”

She looked at him.

”It worked.”

”That is not entirely good.”

”What?”

The Ash-King answered.

It screamed.

Not roared.

Screamed.

The sound tore through the basin and seemed to shake ash loose from every surface at once. Smoke erupted from the remaining spinal vents in violent uneven pulses. The chest glow beneath its cracked hide turned brighter, not weaker.

Vance reached Darius first.

He dropped beside him.

”Valen.”

Darius did not answer.

Theron grabbed his armor.

”Valen.”

Darius’s eyes opened.

Vance exhaled.

Then Darius said, ”Do not shake injured people.”

Theron stared.

Kael almost laughed from relief.

Vance did not.

”You are unbearable.”

”Yes.”

Theron got one arm under Darius.

Darius tried to rise.

His left leg worked.

Right leg worked.

Shoulder nearly useless.

Breathing bad.

Still conscious.

Kael reached them.

”How bad?”

Darius looked at him.

Kael raised one hand.

”Fine. Don’t answer.”

The Ash-King’s vents pulsed.

Galahad shouted from behind the central ridge, ”EVERYONE OFF LOW GROUND!”

Kael understood why.

The creature’s internal pressure was changing.

If the Choking Cloud came now, nobody knew what shape it would take.

Iris and Veyra dragged the rescued fighter uphill.

Sera ran for a higher basalt line.

Galahad moved laterally rather than straight back, keeping everyone spread.

Vance and Kael supported Darius between them.

The Ash-King stood alone in the center of the basin.

Its chest expanded.

Too much.

The sickly pale glow beneath its neck scales spread downward into the chest.

One intact vent burst without being struck.

A jagged piece of hollow spine flew across the battlefield.

Pressure.

Too much pressure.

Kael’s System flashed.

[Critical internal pressure event probable]

”COVER!”

The Ash-King exhaled.

The Choking Cloud did not form as a single forward blast.

It exploded in three directions.

A main column erupted from the mouth.

Two smaller ruptures tore through damaged gaps along the neck and back.

Superheated ash and toxic gas blasted outward across the basin.

The creature had become its own failing pressure vessel.

That did not make it weaker.

It made it less predictable.

Kael and Vance shoved Darius behind a basalt outcrop.

The first ash wave struck the front of the stone.

Heat wrapped around both sides.

Kael lowered his head.

Fine ash slipped through every gap in his armor.

His burned calf felt like it had been placed near an open forge.

Darius coughed.

Vance covered his face.

The stone itself grew hot beneath Kael’s hand.

Then came the second blast.

Not from the mouth.

From behind the Ash-King.

It hit a different angle.

Galahad had taken cover there.

Kael heard him shout.

Could not see him.

Sera crouched behind a narrow pillar ten yards away.

The ash curled toward her.

She had no Milo.

No large Wind spell.

No physical arrow.

Only what she had just awakened.

She formed another Construct Arrow anyway.

The Mana Motes came slower.

Her reserves were already being taxed by every failed and successful attempt.

The shaft formed.

Wobbled.

Sera almost lost it.

She forced the balance straight.

Then stopped.

The ash cloud was too dense.

No target.

She let the arrow dissolve.

That decision cost her less than firing blindly.

Good.

The pressure wave weakened.

Kael raised his head.

The battlefield had changed again.

Visibility barely twenty yards.

Basalt coated gray.

New cracks across the center.

The Ash-King visible only as an enormous dark silhouette.

Then it moved.

Toward them.

Three reliable limbs.

One ruined.

Two damaged vents.

One torn wing.

One nearly useless wing.

Multiple bleeding wounds.

And still it came.

Vance looked over the stone.

”What does it take?”

Kael remembered Darius’s earlier answer.

”More.”

The Ash-King charged through its own ash.

Vance stepped away from Darius.

”No.”

Kael grabbed him.

Theron looked at the hand.

”Let go.”

”You’re not meeting that alone.”

”I’m not.”

He looked past Kael.

Galahad emerged from the gray on the other side.

Alive.

Blood on one temple.

He had lost part of his outer coat to the ash blast.

Vance nodded toward him.

”Three.”

Galahad stared at the incoming creature.

Then at Kael.

”Darius stays.”

Darius pushed away from the wall.

”No.”

Galahad’s head snapped toward him.

Darius did not argue emotionally.

He lifted the sword with his good arm.

The movement was slower.

Still controlled.

”If it reaches this position, Sera, Iris, Veyra, and the injured man lose retreat space.”

That was true.

Galahad hated it.

Kael could see him hating it.

”Then you do not lead the exchange.”

Darius nodded.

”Agreed.”

That was enough.

They moved.

Kael left the outcrop first, not straight toward the Ash-King but left, forcing the creature to choose.

Vance went right.

Galahad stayed back center.

Darius followed Kael at a measured distance, preserving the ability to intervene rather than wasting what remained of his body on the first contact.

The Ash-King chose Vance.

Again.

Theron saw the head turn.

He changed direction.

The creature followed.

He was baiting it toward a cracked stretch of basalt above one of the smaller magma fissures.

Kael understood.

”No!”

Vance heard him.

Kept going.

The Ash-King accelerated.

Theron reached the crack.

Jumped it.

The creature did not.

It slammed one forefoot onto the fractured stone.

Basalt broke.

The foot dropped six inches.

Not enough.

Vance had expected more.

The Ash-King pulled free.

Theron was now too close.

The jaws opened.

Kael ran.

Darius moved from behind him.

Galahad shouted something Kael did not hear.

Vance ducked under the bite.

The Ash-King’s head followed downward.

Its mouth closed around Theron’s upper arm.

Not fully.

Armor caught between teeth.

Vance shouted.

The creature lifted.

Theron’s feet left the ground.

Again.

The Ash-King had learned too.

It had nearly lost him to Sera’s shot last time.

This time it turned its head away from the ranged line.

Sera’s view vanished behind the creature’s neck.

Smart.

Too smart.

Kael reached the foreleg.

Frostbite Edge struck the old wrist wound.

Cold spread.

The Ash-King ignored him.

Darius came to the opposite side.

One-handed.

He attacked the elbow joint.

Aura concentrated into a short precise strike.

The limb shifted.

The Ash-King’s balance changed.

Still it held Vance.

Theron drove his bent weapon into the corner of the creature’s mouth.

The metal scraped tooth.

No release.

Kael looked at the cinderblood flowing from the side wound above him.

Exposed.

Hot.

Available.

He reached.

Blood Manipulation caught it.

The Ash-King’s blood felt wrong.

Heavy.

Resistant even outside its body compared with human blood.

Kael pulled anyway.

Not toward himself.

Toward the creature’s eye.

A ribbon of black blood lifted from its scales.

The Ash-King jerked.

Kael almost lost control.

He forced the blood higher.

It splashed across the creature’s sunken eye.

Not damage.

Obstruction.

The Ash-King blinked.

Its bite loosened.

Vance ripped his arm free.

Dropped.

Darius grabbed his armor and pulled.

Kael released the blood.

The Ash-King snapped blindly.

Its teeth caught nothing.

Theron rolled away clutching his arm.

Blood ran beneath torn armor.

Human blood.

Kael felt it.

Too much?

He checked.

Not arterial.

Probably.

Good enough for now.

The Ash-King shook its head.

Black cinderblood scattered from the eye.

The white pupil returned.

And fixed on Kael.

Of course.

”Bad,” Kael muttered.

The creature lunged.

Kael had no room for Rime-Step.

He used Ice Wedge beneath its damaged rear side.

Not to trap.

To tilt.

The wedge erupted under the bad leg just as the creature transferred weight.

The rear quarter lifted unevenly.

The Ash-King’s lunge twisted.

Its jaw passed beside Kael.

Close enough that heat from its mouth burned his cheek.

Darius struck the neck as it passed.

Vance, wounded arm hanging lower, struck the side.

The Ash-King hit the ground shoulder-first.

The basin shook.

Galahad shouted, ”BACK!”

They obeyed.

No greed.

They withdrew six yards.

The Ash-King rolled its chest upright.

One broken dorsal vent slammed against stone.

The crack widened.

Pressure escaped.

A column of ash shot sideways.

Not aimed.

Pure failure.

Galahad ducked.

Vance stared at the vents.

Kael saw him staring.

Not merely observing.

Wanting.

The impression came and vanished before Kael could define it.

Theron looked toward Kael.

”We keep breaking them.”

Kael did not answer immediately.

The System warning remained in his memory.

Internal pressure regulation deteriorating.

Respiratory output instability increasing.

Darius answered instead.

”Maybe.”

Vance frowned.

Darius pointed toward the Ash-King.

”Every vent we destroy changes what the pressure does.”

”We are hurting it.”

”Yes.”

”That is the purpose.”

”No.”

Theron stared.

Darius’s voice remained level.

”The purpose is killing it without killing ourselves first.”

Galahad came beside them.

”That is the next problem.”

Across the basin, the Ash-King struggled upright.

It was worse now.

Clearly.

The rear leg barely functioned.

Its damaged left wing dragged through ash.

The broken dorsal vents released uncontrolled smoke.

But the chest glow was brighter, and every breath sounded deeper.

More pressurized.

Kael understood the shape of the problem.

They had found a weakness.

Weakness did not always mean safety.

Sometimes breaking the thing that kept a monster stable only made the monster unstable.

Sera reached them last.

Her face was pale.

Her drawing hand trembled.

Galahad looked at her.

”How many?”

She understood what he meant now.

”Not arrows.”

”How many shots?”

Sera looked toward her hand.

”Maybe three good constructs.”

Kael frowned.

”Maybe?”

She nodded. ”If I do not change them too much.”

Vance looked at her. ”And if you do?”

Sera glanced toward the Ash-King’s remaining intact vents.

”One.”

Nobody liked that answer.

Good.

It was probably honest.

Iris appeared on the ridge behind them.

”The rescued man can be moved. Veyra is taking him toward the higher cut.”

Galahad nodded. ”You stay here?”

”Yes.”

”Any sign the Ash-King can still fly?”

Iris looked at the ruined left wing.

”No sustained flight.”

”Jump?”

”Yes.”

Everyone had learned that one.

Galahad studied the battlefield.

Then the Ash-King.

Then the people around him.

The fourth attempt had changed again.

They had entered wanting to ground the creature, damage the rear leg, and learn its vent system.

They had succeeded at all three.

And the Ash-King remained strong enough that nobody wanted to celebrate.

Galahad pointed toward the higher northern shelf.

”Next position. We stop attacking vents until we understand whether we are killing it or turning it into a bomb.”

Vance’s jaw tightened.

But he moved.

That mattered.

Sera followed.

Kael and Darius moved behind her.

Iris took the outer line.

Theron came last, still holding one injured arm close to his body.

The Ash-King watched them retreat again.

It did not chase immediately.

Its chest pulsed pale beneath cracked scales.

Smoke poured unevenly from its back.

One black eye remained fixed on the group.

Then the creature lowered its head.

Its jaws opened.

No ash came.

Only a deep intake of breath that seemed to pull loose soot across the basin toward it.

Kael stopped.

Darius stopped beside him.

The System opened.

[Abnormal respiratory cycle detected]

[Pressure accumulation increasing]

[Outcome uncertain]

Galahad saw Kael’s face.

”What?”

Kael looked toward the Ash-King.

”We need to move faster.”
