The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

”You can try.”

Theron Vance did not raise his voice when he said it. He stood on the fractured side of the passage with red volcanic light leaking through the widening fissure behind him, his clothing dark with blood and ash, while the nearest drakes climbed through broken stone at his back. The words would have sounded almost ordinary if his pupils had not narrowed into pale points again and if the veins along his neck had not been glowing beneath his skin like cracks through heated rock.

Kael stayed between Theron and the gap. Nine feet of broken floor separated them from Darius, Rask, Galahad, Sera, and the route where the wounded were being moved toward the surface. The hand line still crossed the opening, tied around an iron anchor on the far side and a fractured support on Theron’s side, but the last tremor had loosened the stone around the near anchor enough that Kael did not trust it with two bodies at once.

Behind Darius, Mara shouted for the evacuation to keep moving.

That was the right decision.

Kael did not look back to confirm that anyone listened.

”Iris takes the front!” Galahad called from the far side as he turned toward the people farther up the passage. ”Mara stays with her. Veyra keeps the respiratory cases moving. Davin, Eron, litters first. Nobody stops because we do.”

Boots began moving beyond the junction.

Good.

The Chapter of this mission where everyone stopped for Kael was over.

If this became a fight, it could not become everyone’s fight.

Theron looked past him toward the retreating wounded.

”I said I would keep the drakes away from them.”

Kael flexed his empty sword hand. The movement reminded him there was nothing in it. His own blade lay broken somewhere deep in the Caldera. Darius’s sword had been abandoned at the failed bridge. Sera had an unstrung bow. Milo was unconscious on a litter.

They had chosen an excellent time to confront the strongest human in the tunnel.

”You also said you understood the Dominion,” Kael replied. ”Then one of your drakes tried to attack the wounded because it smelled blood.”

”And I stopped it.”

”After it moved.”

Theron’s jaw tightened.

The drake behind him raised its head.

Kael saw the movement.

So did Theron.

Vance closed his eyes for half a heartbeat.

”Stay.”

The drake froze.

Theron opened his eyes again.

”There.”

Kael shook his head. ”You keep proving my argument.”

”And you keep acting as if control means nothing unless it is perfect the first hour I possess it.”

”This is not sword practice.”

”No.”

The dark veins climbed another fraction along Theron’s jaw.

”That is why I cannot afford to walk away from it.”

Kael stared at him.

There it was again.

Every answer came back to keeping the power.

Not merely using it to escape.

Keeping it.

The mountain shifted under them.

A smaller tremor this time.

Enough to send red light pulsing through the crack behind Theron and shake loose pieces of basalt from the ceiling.

Kael looked toward the drakes.

Four visible now.

Two farther back.

More calling from below.

Too many.

”Release them.”

Theron’s expression went flat.

”No.”

Kael breathed through the ache in his ribs.

”Then you are not passing me.”

For several seconds Theron did nothing.

Then he laughed quietly.

The rough sound under the laugh had become more noticeable.

”You have no sword.”

”I noticed.”

”You can barely stand.”

”So can you.”

”My body disagrees.”

”No. Your core does.”

That struck something.

The veins brightened.

The nearest drake’s claws flexed.

Kael watched Theron rather than the creature.

The System opened.

[Host Draconic Integration: unstable.]

[Physical output rising.]

[Pain-response suppression increasing.]

[Mechanical tissue damage continuing.]

[Dominion synchronization elevated.]

Kael dismissed it.

”You feel stronger every time you push it.”

Theron tilted his head.

”I am stronger.”

”And you think that means your body is adapting.”

Vance’s pale pupils narrowed.

”Doesn’t it?”

”No.”

Theron looked almost amused.

”You sound very certain.”

”I am certain your hip is still broken.”

The amusement disappeared.

”You are certain because your System tells you.”

”I am certain because I watched it fail before the core started forcing it to work.”

Theron stepped forward.

The injured side dropped slightly.

A normal man would have fallen.

Draconic power surged.

His body corrected.

Stone cracked under his boot.

Theron kept walking.

”You keep calling that failure.”

Kael shifted his footing.

”What would you call it?”

”Useful.”

Theron moved.

There was no warning.

No dramatic gathering of power.

One moment he stood six yards away.

The next he was in front of Kael.

Kael reacted on instinct.

Rime-Step.

Cold burst beneath his boots.

He cut right.

Theron’s hand missed his chest by inches.

Kael reappeared three yards away.

Vance turned.

Too fast.

Much too fast.

The broken hip should have made that pivot impossible.

Instead Theron drove through it.

Something inside the joint popped loud enough for Kael to hear.

Vance’s face twitched.

That was all.

He came again.

Kael had no mana to waste on another Rime-Step.

He raised both arms.

Bad choice.

Theron hit him with an open palm.

Not a punch.

A shove.

Kael left the ground.

He crossed four yards and struck the tunnel wall back-first.

Pain exploded through his ribs.

His vision flashed white.

He dropped to one knee.

Across the gap, Sera swore.

Darius moved toward the hand line.

Galahad caught his arm.

”You cannot jump that.”

Darius looked at him.

”I can cross.”

”Your leg is half-open.”

”I know.”

Rask had already turned toward the equipment left beside the retreat line.

A wounded Vanguard man had abandoned a plain field sword there before being moved ahead.

Rask grabbed it.

Not a famous weapon.

Not balanced for Darius.

Not his.

He tossed it across the gap.

The sword spun once.

Darius caught it by the grip.

His face changed slightly when he felt the weight.

Wrong.

Still usable.

Kael pushed himself up.

Theron was walking toward him.

Not running now.

Testing.

Kael saw that and hated him for it.

Vance looked at his own hand.

”That was not full strength.”

Kael coughed.

A thin red line appeared against his glove when he wiped his mouth.

”Congratulations.”

Theron looked toward him.

Kael stood fully.

”You can hit an injured man harder than before.”

A flicker of anger.

Good.

Anger made the Dominion respond.

Maybe it also made Theron less careful.

Kael put one hand toward the floor.

”Ice Bind.”

Cold climbed around Theron’s damaged leg.

Not high.

Only ankle and lower shin.

Ice locked the boot to stone.

Theron looked down.

Then stepped.

The Ice Bind shattered.

So did something under his skin.

Kael heard it.

Theron staggered once.

Blood appeared beneath the trouser seam near the injured hip.

There.

Not healed.

Forced.

Kael pointed.

”That.”

Theron looked at the blood.

Then back at him.

”Still standing.”

”For now.”

Vance’s face hardened.

He lunged.

Kael expected the hand.

Wrong.

Theron drove his shoulder into Kael’s chest.

Kael tried to turn.

Too slow.

The impact lifted him again.

This time he did not hit the wall.

A rope snapped tight across his waist.

Kael jerked to a stop.

Rask had thrown the free end of the hand line around him.

The sudden catch almost crushed his ribs anyway, but it stopped him from reaching the fissure behind.

Rask wrapped the rope around his forearm.

”Stop getting thrown.”

Kael struggled for breath.

”Excellent advice.”

Sera grabbed the line beside him.

”Very original.”

Theron looked across the gap.

Rask met his eyes.

”Enough.”

Theron’s face changed.

Not obedience.

Something closer to hurt.

”You made your choice.”

Rask tightened the rope around his forearm.

”Yes.”

The answer landed harder than Kael expected.

Theron turned away from him.

The nearest drake growled.

Vance raised one hand without looking.

”Stay.”

It stopped.

Good.

Still control.

Still Theron.

For now.

Darius tied the plain Vanguard sword at his hip with a strip of cloth, then tested the hand line.

The near-side anchor shifted.

Mara had already left.

No one remained to warn them about structure.

Darius looked down at the nine-foot gap.

Galahad understood.

”No.”

Darius gave him the same look he had given Kael several hundred times during this expedition.

Galahad sighed.

”I am beginning to understand why he ignores you.”

Darius handed him the loose end of the rope.

”Hold.”

Then he jumped.

His injured leg pushed badly.

The gap swallowed the lower half of his body.

His good hand caught the far edge.

Kael saw the bad shoulder strike stone.

Darius’s face went white.

Rask and Galahad pulled the line.

Darius got one knee up.

Then the other.

He rolled onto Kael’s side of the gap and remained down for exactly one breath.

Theron watched.

”Why?”

Darius pushed himself upright.

His left arm hung.

Blood had begun running again from the thigh.

He drew the borrowed sword.

”Because he is my prince.”

Theron’s mouth twisted.

”There it is.”

Darius angled the blade.

”What?”

”The chain.”

Kael frowned.

Theron looked between them.

”You call it loyalty. House. Duty. Oath. Different names for the same thing.”

Darius answered quietly.

”No.”

Theron’s eyes narrowed.

Darius adjusted his stance around the injured leg.

”A chain prevents choice.”

He lifted the borrowed sword.

”I am here because I chose to be.”

Rask heard from across the gap.

So did Kael.

Something about that answer changed the air.

Theron stared at Darius.

The challenge response came immediately.

Dark veins brightened.

His shoulders tightened.

All four visible drakes raised their heads.

Kael felt the System react.

[Draconic output spike.]

[Challenge-response behavior confirmed with moderate confidence.]

Darius saw the physical signs without needing text.

”You cannot fight me without the core deciding what I mean to you.”

Theron’s face hardened.

”You think you understand me because you watched for ten minutes.”

”I understand fighters.”

”Then fight.”

Theron moved.

Darius did not meet him in the center.

The borrowed sword came up along the shortest line.

Theron punched.

Raw strength.

No weapon.

No technique Kael recognized.

Darius turned the blade flat enough that the fist struck steel rather than edge.

Aura reinforced the contact.

The impact sounded like a hammer on an anvil.

Darius slid backward three feet.

His boots carved lines through ash.

The injured leg almost folded.

It did not.

Theron stared.

Darius’s sword hand trembled.

The plain blade had bent slightly.

One strike.

That much force.

Theron smiled.

Darius stepped forward.

Not back.

That stopped the smile.

Theron punched again.

Darius changed the angle.

This time the sword touched the inside of Theron’s wrist.

Not block.

Redirect.

Theron’s fist missed Darius’s shoulder by inches and struck the wall.

Basalt cracked.

Darius cut.

Short.

Across the ribs.

The borrowed sword opened Theron’s clothing.

Barely marked skin beneath.

Kael saw dark lines under the flesh.

Theron looked down.

Then laughed.

Darius did not.

”You are stronger.”

Vance spread his hands.

”Finally.”

Darius continued.

”You are also slower after you miss.”

The smile vanished.

Theron attacked.

Three punches now.

The first high.

Darius parried.

The second low.

Darius stepped.

The injured leg delayed him.

Theron’s knuckles caught his ribs.

Darius folded slightly.

Third attack.

An elbow.

Darius barely got the sword guard in front.

Impact.

Metal rang.

The borrowed sword flew from his hand.

Kael moved.

Frost Burst.

Cold exploded between Darius and Theron.

Not enough to injure.

Enough to throw ash and frozen grit into Theron’s face.

Vance flinched.

Darius retreated.

Preserve decisions.

Kael stepped beside him.

Darius breathed once.

”Do not use much mana.”

”I know.”

”You always say that.”

”Because you always say the obvious thing.”

Darius’s mouth almost moved.

Then Theron came through the freezing cloud.

Kael had expected him to stop.

Wrong again.

The core had increased his heat tolerance.

Frost coated Theron’s skin for half a second before melting.

He reached Kael.

Darius intercepted without the sword.

One forearm against Theron’s elbow.

A hand at the shoulder.

He used Vance’s momentum rather than opposing it.

Theron stumbled one step.

Kael struck.

Not with a blade.

His fist.

Ice formed around the knuckles at the moment of impact.

Cold Snap.

Kael punched Theron directly over the already injured hip.

Vance’s face contorted.

The core forced the leg to remain under him.

Kael hit again.

Same place.

Theron grabbed him by the throat.

Kael’s boots left the floor.

Darius drove his shoulder into Theron’s arm.

The grip loosened.

Kael dropped.

Theron turned and backhanded Darius.

Darius hit the ground.

Hard.

Kael tried Ice Bind again.

Theron stomped through it before the construct finished.

Too slow now.

Kael’s mana control was degrading.

The System warned him.

[Mana reserves: low.]

[Fine-control efficiency reduced.]

[Rime-Step reliability decreasing.]

He dismissed it.

Theron kicked.

Kael crossed both arms.

Impact.

His body lifted.

Again.

Too much strength.

He struck the wall sideways and dropped.

For a second his left hand would not move.

Numb.

Not broken.

Probably.

Across the gap, Rask swore.

Sera opened her hand.

Mana Motes gathered.

One.

Two.

Three.

The pale lights trembled.

She had almost nothing.

Still she tried.

Galahad saw.

”Do not empty yourself for a shot you do not have.”

Sera looked at Theron.

”I might have one.”

”Do you?”

A pause.

”No.”

”Then wait.”

She hated it.

Obeyed.

A roar came from below.

Then another.

One of the drakes behind Theron moved toward the gap.

Theron did not command it.

It watched Darius.

Challenge.

Another looked toward Kael.

Target.

Rask saw.

”They’re reading him.”

Galahad looked at Theron.

”Not commands?”

”Not all of them.”

The first drake crouched.

Rask drew the knife at his belt.

Galahad moved to his side.

Sera remained behind them.

The wounded were already farther up the route.

Good.

That meant they could fight without turning the evacuees into targets.

Still bad.

The drake jumped.

Not across the entire gap.

Onto the wall.

Its claws struck the vertical stone.

It climbed sideways.

Rask stared.

”Of course they can.”

Galahad moved toward the wall edge.

”Let it commit.”

The drake reached for the far lip.

Rask struck the claw with his knife.

The blade did almost nothing.

Galahad hit the wrist with his weapon.

The creature snarled.

Sera gathered again.

Mana Motes came.

Fewer than before.

She concentrated.

A short Construct Arrow formed.

Not elegant.

No Piercing refinement.

Barely stable.

She had no string.

Her physical bow was useless.

That stopped her.

For one terrible heartbeat the old problem returned in a new form.

Arrow.

No bow.

Then she looked at the construct.

Structure.

Not tradition.

She altered the rear.

Shortened the shaft.

Changed the balance.

Not an arrow anymore.

A dart.

Crude.

Heavy at the front.

She stared at it.

Galahad saw.

”Sera?”

”I don’t know.”

The drake hauled its head over the lip.

Rask jumped back.

Sera threw.

Not shot.

Threw.

The Mana-Weaved dart crossed five yards.

It struck the drake beneath the eye.

Shallow.

Enough.

The creature jerked.

Its left claw lost purchase.

Galahad struck the right.

The drake fell.

Not into the deep fissure.

Onto the lower wall.

It caught another ledge and roared.

Sera dropped to one knee.

The construct vanished.

Galahad looked at her.

”That was new.”

Sera’s breathing came hard.

”Later.”

Good.

No celebration.

Theron heard the drake fall.

His head snapped toward the gap.

Darius saw the opening.

He moved.

The borrowed sword lay five feet away.

Too far.

He did not retrieve it.

Instead he attacked Theron’s balance directly.

One step inside.

Hand to wrist.

Forearm against chest.

A trip aimed at the injured hip.

Theron’s body should have folded.

The core surged.

Vance stayed upright.

Then his hip made a wet cracking sound.

Even Theron froze.

Pain reached him.

Real pain.

His eyes widened.

Darius stepped away.

”Your body is losing.”

Theron breathed through clenched teeth.

Then smiled.

”Not fast enough.”

The veins along his neck flared.

Kael’s System exploded with warnings.

[Host output increasing rapidly.]

[Pelvic structural failure worsening.]

[Muscular tearing detected.]

[Vascular stress critical.]

[Integration stability declining.]

[Combat capability temporarily increasing.]

There it was.

The contradiction made numeric.

Theron was becoming harder to fight because he was dying.

Kael pushed himself off the wall.

”Darius.”

”I know.”

Theron moved.

Faster than before.

The ruined hip no longer mattered.

Not because it worked.

Because the core had stopped asking permission from it.

Vance crossed the distance to Darius in two strides.

Punch.

Darius slipped left.

Second punch.

He caught the wrist.

Third.

Knee.

Darius could not evade.

The strike hit his abdomen.

He folded.

Theron grabbed the back of his armor and threw him.

Darius hit the floor, rolled, and nearly crossed the edge.

Kael rushed in.

Theron met him with a forearm.

Kael ducked.

Barely.

He struck the hip with another Cold Snap-coated punch.

Theron absorbed it.

Grabbed Kael’s arm.

Twisted.

Kael felt his shoulder begin to go.

He stepped into the torque rather than away.

Blood Manipulation.

Not Theron’s internal blood.

The blood already running from Vance’s nose, cheek, and torn skin.

Kael pulled it across Theron’s eyes.

Theron flinched.

Grip loosened.

Kael tore free.

Darius returned.

Borrowed sword now in hand.

He had retrieved it during the half-second Theron’s vision broke.

Good.

Theron wiped blood from his eyes.

Darius attacked.

One thrust.

Theron caught the blade between both palms.

Aura met draconic strength.

Metal bent.

Darius released before the sword trapped him.

Theron crushed the blade.

Not fully.

Enough to warp it.

Then punched Darius in the chest.

Kael heard armor deform.

Darius flew backward.

He hit the wall.

Slid down.

Did not rise immediately.

Kael’s stomach went cold.

”DARIUS!”

Theron turned.

”Stay down.”

Darius raised his head.

Theron’s pale pupils narrowed.

”You have nothing left.”

Darius put one hand on the wall.

Stood.

Slowly.

Kael almost laughed.

Of course.

Theron stared.

Darius’s breathing was worse.

His sword was bent.

One shoulder dead.

One leg bleeding.

Armor crushed inward over the chest.

Still standing.

”You keep confusing injury with a decision,” Darius said.

Theron’s face tightened.

The Dominion reacted.

Every drake in the tunnel roared.

The sound rolled through stone.

Galahad looked toward the passage below.

”More incoming.”

Rask looked at Theron.

”Call them off.”

Theron did not.

”Theron.”

No answer.

Rask’s voice hardened.

”Call them off.”

Vance turned toward him.

For one moment Kael thought he would.

Then the Draconic Core pulsed.

Theron’s pupils went pale.

”Why?”

Rask stared.

The question seemed to hurt him.

”Because those are your people going up that tunnel.”

”I know.”

”Then call the drakes off.”

”They won’t touch my people.”

”You cannot promise that.”

”I can command them.”

Rask pointed toward the drake Sera had knocked from the wall.

”You did not command that one to cross.”

Theron looked toward it.

The creature was climbing again.

He had no answer.

That silence was enough.

Galahad shouted toward the upper passage.

”Iris! Keep them moving!”

Her voice returned faintly.

”Already doing it!”

Good.

The evacuation continued.

The fight stayed behind.

That mattered.

Kael stepped between Theron and the gap.

”You said nobody could tell you no.”

Vance looked at him.

Kael breathed through the pain.

”Rask just did.”

Theron’s face hardened.

”Do not.”

”And you cannot stand it.”

”I said do not.”

Kael saw the veins brighten.

Darius did too.

The challenge response.

Territory.

Submission.

Not merely emotion anymore.

Instinct stitched into power.

Kael continued deliberately.

”He left you.”

Theron moved.

Darius shouted, ”KAEL!”

Too late.

Theron crossed the distance and grabbed Kael by the front of his armor.

Kael used Rime-Step.

Nothing.

The spell flickered.

Failed.

Mana too low.

Theron’s other fist hit him under the ribs.

Kael’s world broke.

He left the ground in Theron’s grip.

Pain erased sound.

Vance lifted him with one arm.

Kael could not breathe.

Could not think.

Theron’s face was inches away.

Pale pupils.

Blood from one eye.

Dark veins.

Something human under all of it.

”You think this is about being told no?”

Kael forced air.

”What is it, then?”

Theron’s grip tightened.

”It is about never needing permission to survive.”

Kael looked at him.

Then at the cracks splitting farther along Theron’s neck.

”You are not surviving.”

Something changed in Theron’s eyes.

Kael drove his forehead into Vance’s nose.

Pain exploded through both of them.

Theron dropped him.

Kael hit the ground and rolled.

Darius attacked the instant Theron’s head snapped back.

Bent sword.

Short line.

The blade cut across Theron’s side.

This time deeper.

Draconic reinforcement had not stopped everything.

Black-red human blood sprayed.

Theron turned.

Darius withdrew.

Good.

No greed.

Vance touched the wound.

Looked at the blood.

Smiled.

”Better.”

Darius’s expression did not change.

”That is what you think this is?”

Theron looked at him.

”A fight worth having.”

Darius lowered the blade slightly.

”No.”

Theron frowned.

Darius breathed once.

”You are trying to prove the power was worth the cost.”

Silence.

Rask heard.

Galahad heard.

Kael heard.

Theron’s face became still.

Darius continued.

”So every person who stands against you becomes evidence.”

Vance stepped forward.

”You know nothing about what it cost.”

Darius raised the sword.

”I know exactly what soldiers do when they need dead friends to have died for a reason.”

That hit.

Theron stopped.

Rask closed his eyes.

The words reached somewhere deeper than argument.

Theron looked back toward the tunnel where the drakes climbed.

Then toward Rask.

Then at the blood on his own hands.

One heartbeat.

Human.

The Dominion weakened.

The drakes hesitated.

Galahad saw.

”Now!”

Rask and Galahad moved together.

Not toward Theron.

Toward the climbing drake.

They struck its foreclaws as it reached the gap again.

Sera gathered what little mana remained.

No Construct Arrow.

Only a crude mote cluster.

She compressed it into another short dart.

Her hand shook violently.

She threw.

The dart struck the stone beside the drake’s gripping claw.

Not the creature.

The tiny mana burst cracked the already damaged lip.

The claw slipped.

The drake dropped farther this time.

Its roar disappeared below.

Galahad grabbed Rask.

”Back.”

Rask obeyed.

Sera sat hard.

Her hand went limp.

Done.

Actually done.

No more mana.

Theron looked toward her.

Then at the gap.

Then toward the distant wounded.

He could stop the other drakes.

Kael saw him make the decision.

”Stay.”

The command spread through the passage.

Every visible drake froze.

The roars below changed.

Not gone.

Held.

Theron staggered.

Blood poured from his nose.

His knees bent.

For one second, the core’s power failed to keep him upright.

Then it surged again.

He stood.

Kael’s System warned him.

[Dominion command maintained across multiple entities.]

[Host overload extreme.]

[Projected vessel failure accelerating.]

Kael stared.

Theron had stopped them.

For his people.

Still there.

Still choosing.

But the cost was tearing him apart.

Rask saw the blood.

”You can release them.”

Theron shook his head.

”They will converge again.”

”Then let them go.”

”They may follow the wounded.”

”They may not.”

Vance looked at him.

”You want me to gamble with them?”

Rask’s answer came quietly.

”You are already gambling with yourself.”

Theron almost smiled.

”That was always mine to gamble.”

Kael stood.

His legs shook.

Darius came beside him.

Theron looked at both.

The fight had paused.

Not ended.

The drakes remained frozen by command.

The mountain trembled.

The wounded were farther ahead.

Good.

Every minute bought them distance.

Kael lowered his hands.

”Let them go.”

Theron looked toward him.

”And then?”

”We get everyone out.”

”And after?”

Kael did not lie.

”We deal with what you did.”

Theron laughed softly.

”There.”

Kael frowned.

”That is what you were waiting to say.”

”No.”

”Yes.”

Theron’s pale pupils narrowed again.

”I walk out without this power, and the Empire decides what I am.”

Kael did not answer immediately.

Because Theron was right about one thing.

There would be consequences.

Monster-core experimentation.

Unwilling exposure under his organization.

The dead.

The core.

The drakes.

No version of this ended with everyone shaking hands outside.

Theron saw the silence.

”Exactly.”

Kael looked at him.

”So this is freedom?”

Vance’s smile disappeared.

”You tell me.”

Kael gestured toward the blood running from Theron’s eye and nose, the veins splitting his skin, the hip being forced to function through structural damage, the drakes frozen because letting them move might expose his own people.

”You cannot stop using the power because you are afraid of what happens without it.”

Theron said nothing.

Kael continued.

”That is not freedom.”

The nearest drake trembled under the Dominion.

Theron looked toward it.

For the first time, the sentence seemed to reach him.

Then a deeper roar came from below.

Larger than the others.

Not Ash-King large.

Still dangerous.

Theron’s head snapped toward the sound.

The pale pupils sharpened.

A new draconic presence entered the edge of Kael’s System awareness.

[Large draconic signature approaching.]

[Dominion response: contested.]

Theron’s face changed.

”This one is resisting.”

Darius shifted his stance.

Kael looked toward the dark lower passage.

The drakes Theron held began growling.

One tried to turn.

Theron’s hand clenched.

”Stay.”

The command shuddered through him.

Blood ran from both eyes now.

Rask stared.

”Theron, stop.”

Vance did not.

Another roar.

Closer.

The stone beneath them vibrated.

Galahad looked toward the upper route.

Then Kael.

”We cannot fight another one here.”

Kael knew.

Theron did too.

But something in the core responded to the challenge before the man could reason around it.

His shoulders squared.

The veins brightened.

The drakes lowered.

The approaching roar came again.

Theron smiled.

Not happily.

Instinctively.

Darius saw.

”He wants to answer it.”

Kael looked at Theron.

”No.”

Vance’s eyes remained on the darkness.

”It challenged the Dominion.”

Rask’s face went cold.

”You hear yourself?”

Theron did not answer.

The approaching drake struck stone somewhere around the bend.

Theron stepped toward it.

Kael blocked him.

Again.

This time Darius moved beside Kael.

Bent borrowed sword in hand.

Theron stopped.

Three men.

One passage.

A mountain breaking around them.

The wounded moving farther toward daylight.

Galahad and Rask behind.

Sera empty.

Milo unconscious somewhere ahead.

Drakes held by force below.

And something larger coming because the dead Ash-King’s hierarchy had not finished deciding who ruled it.

Kael looked at Theron.

”You want to prove you are the king now?”

Theron’s jaw tightened.

Kael pointed toward the upper tunnel.

”Then prove you can choose something other than a fight.”

The roar came again.

Theron’s entire body shook.

Not fear.

Restraint.

For several seconds the man and the core seemed to pull in opposite directions.

Then Theron closed his eyes.

”Back.”

The command changed.

Not to the approaching creature.

To the drakes already under his control.

Their bodies rose.

They began retreating down side passages.

Away from the evacuees.

Away from Theron.

Rask stared.

Kael did too.

Theron kept his eyes closed.

”Go.”

The nearest drake hesitated.

Theron’s face tightened.

”GO.”

It turned.

The others followed.

The Dominion stretched.

Then released.

The effect on Theron was immediate.

He dropped to one knee.

Both hands hit stone.

Blood spilled from his mouth.

The dark veins dimmed.

For the first time since he consumed the Ash-King’s core, there were no drakes standing around him.

Rask moved first.

”Theron.”

Vance raised one hand.

”Don’t.”

He coughed.

Dark blood hit the floor.

Kael’s System flashed.

[Dominion load reduced.]

[Host damage remains critical.]

[Core integration continuing.]

Theron looked up.

Human pupils.

Mostly.

He stared toward the lower passage where the larger drake was still approaching.

Then toward the route his people had taken.

His breathing slowed.

”I released them.”

Rask nodded.

”Yes.”

Theron pushed himself upright.

Again.

Always.

Kael looked at him.

”Then cross.”

Vance looked toward the gap.

For a moment, Kael thought he would.

Then Theron’s gaze moved to Darius.

The Empire’s Shield stood beside Kael with a bent borrowed sword, a ruined shoulder, a bleeding leg, and enough stubbornness to make death feel underqualified.

Theron smiled faintly.

”Not yet.”

Darius’s eyes narrowed.

Theron rolled his injured shoulder.

Dark veins brightened again.

Not as violently.

Still.

Kael’s stomach sank.

”You just released the drakes.”

”Yes.”

”Then stop.”

”No.”

Theron looked at Darius.

”The monsters are not the reason I need the power.”

There it was.

The fight underneath the fight.

Darius understood.

Kael did too.

Theron had released the drakes.

He had not released the belief that had brought him here.

He stepped forward.

Darius adjusted his stance.

The borrowed blade lowered into a guard so simple that anyone watching might have mistaken it for exhaustion.

Kael knew better.

Theron Vance had finally chosen to fight without hiding behind the Dominion.

That did not make him less dangerous.

It made the next exchange personal.
