The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

The first mistake would have been believing that moving toward the Ash-King meant attacking it.

Galahad did not make that mistake.

The creature charged across the northern shelf while the six remaining fighters spread rather than meeting it in one line. Kael went left with Darius several paces behind him. Theron Vance shifted right, his damaged weapon held lower because the arm the Ash-King had nearly bitten through was beginning to stiffen. Iris cut farther toward the edge of the plateau, choosing the uneven ground where the creature’s enormous weight would have to adjust more often. Sera stayed behind the frontline with nothing on her bowstring, breathing slowly while pale Mana Motes flickered around her empty drawing hand and vanished whenever she tried to gather too many.

Galahad remained where he could see them all.

That position put him closest to the center and gave the Ash-King another target.

It noticed.

The corpse-like head swung toward him before the creature reached Kael. One tiny white pupil shifted inside the sunken black eye, and the Ash-King changed direction with a violence that should have destroyed its own balance. Its ruined right rear leg dragged across the stone, but the healthy hind leg drove harder while the extended right wing acted like a living counterweight. The creature had learned to fight around the injury faster than Kael had learned to exploit it.

”Galahad!”

Kael cut across the charge.

He used no technique.

Not yet.

His burned calf hurt with every stride, but he still reached the creature’s front quarter before the Ash-King reached Galahad. Kael swung Frostbite Edge across the already wounded foreleg, aiming not for penetration but for attention. Cold spread over the cracked matte scales in a thin white line.

The Ash-King stopped going after Galahad.

Its head turned toward Kael.

”Good,” Kael muttered. ”Terrible, but good.”

The jaw came down.

Kael moved left.

The first bite missed.

The second did not come where he expected.

Instead of snapping again, the Ash-King drove its forehead sideways.

Kael had never considered the skull itself a weapon.

He learned.

The side of the creature’s head struck his chest and shoulder like a falling wall. Kael’s feet left the ground before pain arrived. He hit basalt on his back, bounced once, and rolled through loose ash until a rock stopped him at the hip.

Breathing became impossible.

Not difficult.

Impossible.

His ribs locked.

He opened his mouth and tried to drag air in.

Nothing.

Across the gray shelf, the Ash-King stepped toward him.

Darius intercepted.

One functioning shoulder.

One good hand.

Still Darius.

He did not stand between Kael and the creature like a shield expecting to absorb everything. He angled himself across the shortest path and raised the sword only when the Ash-King’s claw committed. Steel met the inner side of one talon. Aura concentrated along the blade. Darius turned his entire body with the strike, letting the claw’s momentum pass instead of trying to stop it.

The claw missed Kael by less than a yard.

Darius’s boots slid.

His bad arm hung uselessly.

The Ash-King lifted the same claw again.

Darius did not have the body to repeat the movement.

Iris changed the decision before he needed to.

A wooden arrow struck the Ash-King behind the jaw.

Her second-to-last physical arrow.

The shaft bounced from scale, but the Wind-guided shot arrived from an angle the creature had not been watching. Its eye turned toward the impact.

Iris had already moved.

She did not wait to admire the shot.

Brush Step lightened her body enough that she crossed the broken shelf without sinking deeply into loose ash, moving toward a cluster of black stone projections near the northern edge.

The Ash-King followed her with its head.

Kael finally inhaled.

Pain came with the breath.

He almost wished it had not.

Galahad reached him, grabbed the front of his armor, and hauled him into a sitting position. ”Can you move?”

Kael coughed. ”Eventually.”

”That means now.”

”Your bedside manner is terrible.”

”I am not beside a bed.”

Galahad left him before Kael could answer.

The Ash-King’s damaged vents expelled another uneven burst of soot.

Three black plumes rose from its back.

One stopped halfway.

The pressure found somewhere else.

A crack beneath the scale Sera had opened earlier puffed gray smoke from inside the creature’s body.

Kael saw.

Darius saw.

Vance saw.

The Ash-King turned toward Iris.

Theron attacked the opening.

He came from behind the creature’s damaged rear side and drove the edge of his bent weapon beneath the broken scale. The strike lacked the cleanliness of Darius’s sword work, but Vance compensated with commitment. Metal entered exposed tissue.

Black blood erupted.

The Ash-King screamed.

Theron twisted the weapon.

”Vance!” Galahad shouted.

Too long.

Theron knew.

He tried to pull free.

The weapon stuck.

The Ash-King’s tail moved.

Darius saw first.

”LEAVE IT!”

Theron did not.

One extra pull.

That was all.

One decision too many.

The tail hit him across the legs.

Vance flipped sideways.

His weapon remained buried in the Ash-King.

Theron struck the ground shoulder-first and rolled until he crashed into a basalt spur.

The creature turned toward him.

Kael got his feet under himself.

His body said no.

He stood anyway.

The Ash-King took one step toward Theron.

Then another.

Its right rear leg dragged.

Its exposed side bled.

The weapon remained stuck beneath the broken dorsal scale, bouncing with every movement.

Kael stared at it.

”Leave it,” Darius said.

Kael looked at him.

Darius had seen the thought.

”You were going to retrieve it.”

”It is useful.”

”So is breathing.”

Kael hated how often that argument worked.

Theron pushed himself upright without the weapon.

His left knee failed once.

He forced it straight.

The Ash-King lowered its head.

Then stopped.

Not because of Vance.

Because of the weapon.

The bent metal moved each time the damaged tissue beneath the scale flexed.

The creature reached back with its jaws.

Could not reach.

Its spine twisted.

The weapon shifted deeper.

The Ash-King screamed again.

Theron stared.

Kael did too.

The creature had become trapped by the thing stuck inside it.

Not immobilized.

Irritated.

Pain made it move differently.

”Do not pull it out,” Galahad said.

Vance looked at him. ”That was mine.”

”It belongs to the Ash-King now.”

Theron’s face tightened.

Then he laughed once despite the pain in his knee. ”I hate this expedition.”

Kael coughed. ”You invited us deeper.”

”I regret several decisions.”

”Good.”

The Ash-King turned away from Vance.

Its attention shifted toward the western edge of the shelf.

Kael followed its gaze.

Sera.

She stood behind a low basalt rise with the physical bow in her left hand and her right hand open.

Mana Motes had gathered.

More than before.

Not enough for a shot yet.

The Ash-King had learned what that meant.

Its black eye fixed on her.

Sera saw.

”So have you.”

The creature charged.

Galahad shouted, ”SERA, MOVE!”

She moved before the command finished.

No attempt to form an arrow.

No stubbornness.

She ran.

The Ash-King’s right wing opened.

Not flight.

Balance.

It allowed the creature to change direction around the basalt rise without losing speed.

Sera cut left.

The Ash-King followed.

She changed right.

The creature adjusted again.

Too fast.

Iris appeared ahead of her.

”Toward me!”

Sera did.

Iris stood beside a stretch of ground that looked solid until Kael noticed the narrow fractures running through it.

The tracker had noticed first.

Of course.

Sera ran directly toward her.

The Ash-King followed.

Ten yards.

Seven.

Iris moved.

Sera kept coming.

Kael understood.

”Jump!”

Sera jumped.

Not high.

Far enough.

She cleared the fractured section.

The Ash-King did not.

Its foreclaw struck first.

The basalt broke under the weight.

One foreleg dropped through.

The creature’s chest slammed against the shelf.

Sera hit the ground, rolled, and slid behind Iris.

The Ash-King ripped its trapped foreleg upward.

Stone flew.

One fragment struck Iris in the upper back.

She stumbled.

Sera caught her.

”I’m fine.”

”You got hit.”

”I noticed.”

The Ash-King tore free.

Its foreclaw bled now.

Not much.

Another injury.

Another thing that did not stop it.

Kael watched the creature’s breathing.

Deep.

Uneven.

The pale glow beneath the neck scales brightened with each inhale, dimmed incompletely on the exhale, then brightened again before the previous glow had fully faded.

Pressure stacking.

The System opened.

[Respiratory recovery incomplete]

[Internal pressure retention increasing]

[Observed tissue damage accumulating]

[Threat level remains extreme]

Good.

At least it had stopped pretending progress meant safety.

Galahad moved everyone away from the center.

”Spread. No lines.”

The Ash-King had begun using its body to force people toward each other.

He had noticed.

The creature turned toward the nearest target.

Darius.

Kael’s stomach tightened.

Darius stood with the sword in his right hand now. His left arm barely moved. The side of his armor had been dented by earlier impacts, and blood had dried beneath the bandage over his shoulder.

The Ash-King charged.

Darius did not.

He waited.

Kael knew that look.

Darius was reading.

Foot.

Wing.

Head.

Weight.

The monster had changed its gait after losing the rear leg.

Its right wing opened wider before hard left turns.

Its good rear leg pushed harder whenever the body accelerated.

Its injured foreclaw landed slightly outside the line after the trap Iris had used.

Darius saw all of it.

The Ash-King came closer.

Six yards.

Four.

Two.

Darius stepped right.

The Ash-King adjusted left.

Exactly as Darius wanted.

Its right wing opened.

Darius cut the wing joint.

Not the membrane.

The harder base where the wing met the body.

One-handed.

No large windup.

Aura condensed along the edge.

The sword struck.

A crack sounded.

Not bone breaking.

Scale.

The Ash-King lurched.

Darius had used its own turn to increase the force crossing his blade.

Make defense cost them.

Even a monster could be taught the rule. Darius valen

Darius withdrew before the creature could counter.

One step.

Two.

The Ash-King’s wing hit the ground.

Its balance failed.

The ruined rear leg folded.

For the first time, the Ash-King collapsed without anyone forcing the final motion.

Its right shoulder struck basalt.

The weapon embedded in its side drove deeper.

Black blood sprayed.

Vance saw.

”So did I.”

He ran.

Galahad swore.

”THERON!”

Vance ignored him.

Kael ran too.

Not because Theron was right.

Because if Vance committed alone, the Ash-King would kill him.

Darius followed more slowly.

Iris moved toward the creature’s head.

Sera stayed back.

Good.

The Ash-King struggled to rise.

Kael reached the exposed tissue first.

The broken scale beneath the damaged vent had peeled farther away.

Dark flesh moved underneath.

He used Frostbite Edge.

The blade entered.

Not deep.

Cold spread through exposed tissue.

The Ash-King’s entire torso convulsed.

Theron arrived at the embedded weapon.

He grabbed it with both hands.

Pulled.

Galahad shouted from behind them, ”DO NOT!”

Theron did not pull it out.

He drove it farther in.

Kael felt the creature’s body jerk beneath him.

”What are you doing?”

”Making the hole larger.”

Reasonable.

Terrible.

The Ash-King rolled.

Kael had no time.

He jumped away.

Theron tried.

His injured knee failed.

The creature’s side rose beneath him.

Vance slid down the ribs instead of clearing.

Kael saw him disappear below the massive torso.

”THERON!”

The Ash-King rolled fully onto its chest.

Kael’s heart stopped.

Then Vance crawled out between the forelegs.

He had gone under it.

Madman.

The Ash-King lowered its head.

Theron looked up.

Too close.

The jaw opened.

Iris threw her final physical arrow.

Wind caught it.

The shaft entered the Ash-King’s nostril.

Not deep.

The creature jerked.

Theron rolled aside.

Iris now had no arrows.

She did not look at the empty quiver.

Different person.

Different relationship with ammunition.

She drew both field knives.

Sera saw that.

Something passed across her face.

Then vanished beneath concentration.

The Ash-King regained its footing.

Badly.

The exposed tissue beneath the dorsal vent now carried a deeper wound.

Black blood ran down the creature’s side in thick lines.

Kael reached with Blood Manipulation.

The cinderblood responded slowly.

Heavy.

Hot.

He did not try to control all of it.

One line.

Only one.

He lifted a ribbon of blood away from the wound and pulled.

The Ash-King reacted.

Not because Kael had enough force to tear anything major.

Because the blood moved across raw tissue in the wrong direction.

Pain.

Kael pulled again.

The creature snapped toward him.

Good.

Vance escaped.

Kael released.

The blood fell.

He moved.

The Ash-King followed.

Darius stepped into the line after Kael passed him.

The sword struck the creature’s damaged foreclaw.

A shallow cut.

Then another.

Darius was not trying to sever it.

He was punishing every landing.

The creature adjusted.

Stopped using the foreclaw fully.

That meant more weight shifted to the healthy front leg.

Iris noticed.

”LEFT FRONT TAKING MORE!”

Galahad heard.

”So make it turn right!”

Kael understood.

They had spent hours exploiting the bad rear leg.

Now the creature had begun transferring weight elsewhere.

Injury created dependency.

Dependency created pattern.

Galahad pointed toward Vance.

”Right side!”

Theron moved.

No argument.

He struck stone with the flat of his hand because his weapon remained embedded in the Ash-King.

The noise drew the creature’s head.

Iris moved opposite him.

Kael took center-left.

Darius held back, conserving what remained.

The Ash-King turned right to follow Vance.

Its healthy left foreleg took most of the weight.

Iris attacked.

Not with strength.

With knives.

She came in low using Brush Step, body light enough that her feet barely disturbed the ash. One knife struck the soft fold behind the left foreleg.

The first blade failed against scale.

The second found a seam.

Small.

Blood appeared.

The Ash-King’s leg jerked.

Iris was already leaving.

Twin-Knife Break was never about winning a fair duel. It was about creating enough space to survive close contact. Iris Hollow

The Ash-King snapped toward her.

Vance attacked the other side with nothing but a broken piece of basalt.

Kael stared.

Theron slammed the stone directly into the open wound beneath the dorsal scale.

The rock shattered.

The Ash-King convulsed.

”You lost your weapon,” Kael shouted.

Vance ducked a claw. ”I noticed!”

The creature’s pressure changed.

Kael felt it.

Chest.

Neck.

Vents.

All at once.

”BACK!”

They broke.

Iris retreated first.

Vance followed.

Kael Rime-Stepped once, short enough not to empty himself.

Darius backed behind a pillar.

Galahad pulled toward the edge.

Sera stayed where she was.

Kael saw.

”SERA!”

She raised one hand.

”WAIT!”

Mana Motes swirled around her fingers.

Not many.

Enough.

The Ash-King’s mouth opened.

Pale light filled the throat.

The remaining dorsal vents trembled.

Sera formed a Construct Arrow.

The shaft appeared.

Flickered.

Held.

She did not compress the point.

Not Piercing.

Too expensive.

Simple.

The Ash-King drew breath.

Sera nocked.

Kael looked at the angle.

Bad.

The creature had partly turned away.

Only the side of the throat exposed.

Sera drew anyway.

Not at the mouth.

At the open tissue beneath the vent.

Kael realized.

The breath cycle made the exposed flesh expand.

Each inhale stretched it.

Sera waited.

The Ash-King inhaled deeper.

The wound opened slightly.

She fired.

The Construct Arrow crossed through ash.

No special refinement.

No dense point.

Just better formation.

The arrow struck the exposed tissue.

Entered.

Shallow.

The Ash-King exhaled.

Pressure hit the embedded construct from inside.

The arrow shattered.

Not outward.

Into the wound.

The Ash-King screamed.

The breath failed.

Ash blasted from the damaged side instead of the mouth.

The creature twisted violently.

Sera almost smiled.

Then her knees shook.

She sat down instead.

Not gracefully.

Galahad looked at her.

”How many?”

Sera flexed her hand.

”Maybe one.”

Good.

Still finite.

Different quiver.

Same rule.

The Ash-King’s interrupted breath did not disappear.

Pressure found another path.

One remaining vent ruptured.

A black column shot upward.

The force drove the creature’s front half down.

Its chest hit basalt.

The open wound beneath the dorsal scale spread.

Kael’s System flashed.

[Pressure regulation failure expanding]

[Multiple tissue breaches detected]

[Internal respiratory stress severe]

[Critical anatomy: unresolved]

Warning: proximity risk increasing

Vance read Kael’s expression.

”What?”

”It is getting worse inside.”

Theron looked almost pleased.

Darius did not.

”Meaning?”

”I don’t know.”

”Then say that.”

”I don’t know.”

Galahad shouted, ”Nobody goes near it until the next pressure release!”

Theron stopped moving forward.

Good.

The Ash-King’s body began shaking.

Not weakness.

Pressure.

Its abdomen contracted.

Chest expanded.

The remaining intact vents opened fully.

Ash poured out.

Then stopped.

All of them.

Kael’s System changed.

[Dorsal output ceased]

Darius’s eyes narrowed.

”That is bad.”

Everyone knew.

The creature inhaled.

Nothing escaped through its back.

The chest glow brightened.

Pale white became almost colorless.

The cracks between the neck scales shone.

Sera pushed herself up.

”No shot.”

Galahad looked around.

Cover.

There was almost none left.

The Ash-King had collapsed one retreat path.

The northern shelf had lost one pillar.

The remaining basalt structures were cracked.

The open edge led down toward unstable lower terrain.

Darius studied the battlefield.

Kael studied him.

Vance looked at the creature.

Iris looked at the ground.

Galahad looked at everyone.

Six people.

One monster.

No safe direction.

Then Iris pointed toward the Ash-King.

”Under it.”

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed again.

Not the creature.

The ground beneath its front half.

A fracture.

Wide.

Fresh.

Heat pulsed through it.

Galahad understood first.

”We make it move.”

Vance frowned. ”Where?”

”Anywhere.”

The Ash-King inhaled again.

Kael saw the logic.

If they stayed spread on the shelf, the pressure burst could hit all of them unpredictably.

If they forced the creature to change position before release, they might at least choose where the blast began.

Darius stepped forward.

Kael grabbed him.

”You cannot.”

Darius looked at the hand.

Kael did not release.

”One arm. Shoulder gone. You already took enough.”

Darius’s expression remained calm.

”Then you go.”

Kael stared.

That was not the argument he expected.

Darius continued. ”You wanted me not to go. Good. Solve it.”

Fine.

Kael turned.

Ash-King.

Pressure.

Bad rear leg.

Overloaded front left.

Injured foreclaw.

Exposed tissue.

Fractured ground.

Ice.

The answer arrived.

Not killing.

Movement.

Kael ran.

Galahad shouted, ”KAEL!”

”No time!”

He aimed for the Ash-King’s left side.

The creature saw him.

Good.

Its black eye turned.

Kael used Rime-Step once.

Short.

He appeared farther left.

The Ash-King pivoted.

Healthy left foreleg took weight.

Exactly.

Kael cast Ice Wedge beneath that foot.

Not huge.

Sharp.

Angled.

Ice erupted from the fracture in the basalt.

The foot landed partly on it.

The Ash-King slipped.

Only inches.

Enough.

Its chest turned toward Kael.

The mouth opened.

Kael’s skin went cold despite the heat.

Too soon.

He had wanted one more step.

No.

Use what exists.

”NOW!”

Vance understood.

He charged from the opposite side.

No weapon.

Just himself.

Theron slammed his shoulder into the Ash-King’s injured rear leg.

Absurd.

Insufficient.

But the leg was nearly useless.

The body shifted.

Darius added a single Aura strike from distance?

No.

He did not have a ranged technique yet.

He moved close enough for one sword contact.

One-handed.

He struck the healthy foreleg’s inner joint as the foot fought the Ice Wedge.

The Ash-King’s balance broke.

The creature took the step Kael wanted.

Forward.

Onto the fractured section Iris had identified.

Basalt cracked.

The Ash-King’s front half dropped.

Not into a deep pit.

A lower shelf.

Three feet.

Enough to jolt the entire body.

Enough to make the chest compress before the pressure release.

Kael realized immediately that this might be worse.

The Ash-King’s mouth opened.

The internal pressure detonated.

Ash erupted from its mouth.

From its neck.

From the open dorsal wound.

From cracks that had not existed moments earlier.

The blast hit the lower shelf first and rebounded upward.

Galahad screamed, ”DOWN!”

Kael had no cover.

Darius grabbed him.

Both men dropped behind the Ash-King’s own raised hindquarter.

The monster itself became the shield.

A terrible idea.

The only one available.

Vance went beneath the right wing.

Iris flattened against the ground behind a stone lip.

Galahad reached Sera and pulled both of them behind the remaining pillar.

The pressure blast tore across the shelf.

Heat struck Kael’s back.

Ash filled the air.

The creature screamed through its own discharge.

The sound became something broken.

Its body spasmed.

Kael saw dark blood pour from the open tissue.

Too much.

The Ash-King collapsed onto one knee.

Then the other.

Its head struck the ground.

For one second, nobody moved.

Then two.

Three.

Kael’s heart hammered.

Vance rose first.

His face changed.

”Now.”

Galahad shouted immediately. ”WAIT!”

Theron looked toward him.

”The pressure is gone!”

”You do not know that.”

”It fell!”

”It has fallen before!”

Vance stared.

Galahad stared back.

The Ash-King’s body twitched.

Darius stood.

Slowly.

One arm.

Sword in hand.

Kael forced himself upright.

The monster did not rise.

Its breathing had changed.

Shallow.

Ragged.

Every inhale pulled ash across the ground.

Every exhale leaked through wounds.

Theron stepped forward.

Galahad swore.

”Vance.”

Theron did not stop.

Kael watched him.

Something in his posture had changed.

Not reckless.

Intent.

Too much intent.

He looked at the Ash-King differently now.

Kael felt it again.

The same thing he had noticed when Vance stared at the damaged vents.

Wanting.

Then the Ash-King’s eye opened.

The white pupil found Theron.

Vance stopped.

Too late.

The creature’s tail moved.

No strength?

Wrong.

The tail struck Theron across the chest.

He flew.

Kael winced before impact.

Vance hit the ground and slid.

The Ash-King rose.

Not fully.

Front legs first.

Then chest.

Then good rear leg.

The ruined leg dragged.

It looked impossible.

It did it anyway.

Galahad looked at Theron.

”THAT is why I said wait!”

Vance coughed from the ground.

”I heard you!”

”You ignored me!”

”I also noticed!”

Even Darius looked tired of them.

The Ash-King opened its mouth.

No glow.

No major breath.

It charged.

Still.

After everything.

Kael felt something close to despair.

Not because the creature was unwounded.

It was dying.

He could see that now.

Black blood ran from too many places.

Its chest no longer moved evenly.

The dorsal vents had mostly failed.

Its wing dragged.

Its leg was destroyed.

But dying was not dead.

And nothing on this battlefield cared how close death was if the Ash-King killed them first.

Darius stepped forward.

Kael looked at him.

”No.”

Darius did not answer.

He adjusted his stance.

One-handed.

No left shoulder.

No unnecessary movement.

The Ash-King charged.

Darius waited.

Kael saw what he intended.

Not win.

Take the line.

Again.

He moved beside him.

Darius glanced over.

”I said solve it.”

”I am.”

”That was not permission.”

”Too late.”

Vance rose on the opposite side.

Iris drew both knives.

Sera stayed behind Galahad, hand open, trying to collect what little mana remained.

Six.

Still six.

The Ash-King came.

Its jaw opened.

Darius moved first.

Sword against the inner line of the bite.

Aura flashed.

The head turned.

Kael struck the exposed neck with Frostbite Edge.

Vance hit the side wound with both hands wrapped around the broken shaft of his own embedded weapon and drove it deeper.

Iris cut the overloaded front leg.

Galahad shouted the timing.

Sera gathered Mana Motes.

The Ash-King hit all of them with its presence before it hit anyone with its body.

Ash.

Heat.

Weight.

The stink of blood and sulfur.

The ground vibrating beneath every step.

Kael’s sword entered the cracked neck scale.

Cold spread.

Darius’s blade held the jaw line for one heartbeat.

Vance’s weapon shifted.

Iris withdrew before the claw came down.

Galahad yelled, ”OUT!”

They broke.

The Ash-King snapped at empty space.

Missed.

Its head followed Darius.

Kael hit the neck again.

Not deep.

Enough.

The creature turned.

Vance struck.

It turned again.

Iris forced the front leg to adjust.

The group was no longer attacking the Ash-King as though each person needed to hurt it.

They were making it answer.

One decision after another.

The same lesson Darius had taught every fighter who survived him.

Do not spend the whole battle reacting.

Make the enemy react.

The Ash-King swung its tail.

They separated.

The right wing swept.

They ducked.

Its claw struck.

Darius redirected.

Its head snapped toward Kael.

He retreated.

Vance attacked.

The creature turned.

Iris cut.

Galahad called.

Sera waited.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Not victory.

Control.

Temporary.

Fragile.

But theirs.

The Ash-King tried to draw another breath.

Its chest expanded.

Stopped.

Expanded again.

The open wounds leaked ash instead.

Kael saw the moment.

So did Sera.

Mana Motes gathered around her hand.

One last construct.

Maybe.

She shaped it slowly while the others kept the monster moving.

Point.

Shaft.

Balance.

The shape flickered.

Her knees shook.

Galahad saw.

”Do not force it.”

Sera breathed through clenched teeth.

”I have it.”

Maybe.

The arrow formed.

Basic.

No Piercing refinement.

She could not afford it.

The Ash-King turned toward Vance.

Its exposed neck opened.

Sera drew.

Held.

Ash moved left.

Then down.

Thermal sink.

She adjusted.

The Ash-King moved again.

The shot disappeared.

Sera did not fire.

The Construct Arrow began dissolving.

Her hand trembled harder.

”Come on.”

The Ash-King turned toward Kael.

The neck opened again.

Better angle.

Sera drew fully.

The construct flickered.

She released.

The arrow crossed the battlefield.

Held.

Entered the open neck wound.

Not deep.

Not special.

Enough.

The Ash-King jerked.

Kael attacked immediately.

Frostbite Edge drove into the same wound.

Cold followed the path Sera opened.

The creature’s head snapped upward.

Black blood spilled.

The pale glow beneath the neck scales dimmed.

Not gone.

Dimmed.

The System opened.

[Respiratory function degrading]

[Mobility severely compromised]

[Threat level: extreme]

Extreme.

Still.

Kael almost laughed.

Of course.

The Ash-King stumbled backward.

One step.

Two.

The bad rear leg failed.

Its body lowered.

Everyone stopped.

No one rushed it.

Galahad had taught them that.

The Ash-King remained upright on three limbs.

Barely.

Its black eyes moved from Darius to Kael, then Vance, Iris, Galahad, and finally Sera.

The empty quiver.

The bow.

The hand now hanging uselessly at her side.

Sera had nothing left.

No physical arrows.

No stable Mana Weaving for another shot.

She looked back at the creature anyway.

The Ash-King lowered its head.

Not surrender.

Not yet.

Its body compressed.

Darius saw.

”Charge.”

Kael believed him.

The Ash-King launched itself across the shelf one more time.

Not fast.

Not compared with before.

Still fast enough to kill.

Galahad shouted for separation.

Everyone moved.

The creature chose Kael.

Of course.

Its mouth opened.

Kael’s ribs hurt.

His calf burned.

Mana nearly empty.

Blood Manipulation limited.

Ice expensive.

No Crescent Blizzard safely.

Darius too injured to save him forever.

Kael ran.

Not away.

Toward the basalt edge.

The Ash-King followed.

Galahad understood.

”No.”

Kael ignored him.

Vance saw.

His eyes widened.

”You idiot.”

Probably.

The edge approached.

Ten yards.

Five.

Kael Rime-Stepped.

His last clean burst.

He cut sideways at the final moment.

The Ash-King tried to turn.

The right wing opened automatically for balance.

The damaged wing failed to match it.

The ruined rear leg slipped.

The overloaded front leg struck ash-coated basalt.

The creature’s entire body twisted.

Not enough to fall over the edge.

Close.

Kael turned.

The Ash-King’s side was exposed.

The embedded weapon still protruded beneath the broken scale.

Theron saw.

Darius saw.

Iris saw.

Galahad saw.

Nobody needed a speech.

Vance ran.

Darius ran.

Iris moved.

Kael returned.

Four directions.

One opening.

The Ash-King tried to recover.

Too slow.

Vance reached the embedded weapon first and grabbed it with both hands.

Darius struck the scale above.

Kael drove Cold Snap into the exposed wound.

Iris attacked the front leg to stop the recovery step.

Theron pulled.

This time outward.

The weapon came free.

Along with blood.

A lot of blood.

Black cinderblood poured down the Ash-King’s side in a hot sheet.

Kael reached with Blood Manipulation.

Not all of it.

Just enough.

He dragged the exposed flow downward and away from the wound instead of allowing it to clot or settle.

His head spun instantly.

Too much mass.

He reduced the pull.

Still worked.

The Ash-King turned toward him.

Darius struck the open wound.

One-handed.

Aura concentrated.

Deepest sword strike yet.

The creature screamed.

Vance took the weapon and drove it back into the same opening at a new angle.

Kael released the blood.

Iris withdrew.

Galahad shouted, ”OUT!”

They obeyed.

The Ash-King staggered.

Its body hit the ground with one foreleg.

Then the other.

The head lowered.

Ash poured from its mouth.

No pressure.

Just ash.

Loose.

Gray.

The chest glow flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Dimmed.

Kael stood twenty yards away with his sword lowered.

Nobody approached.

Not this time.

The Ash-King breathed.

Shallow.

Again.

The black eye remained open.

The white pupil moved.

Still alive.

Still dangerous.

Still not finished.

Theron wiped black blood from his hands and stared at the creature.

Galahad pointed toward him.

”Do not.”

Vance looked at him.

”I am standing.”

”Continue.”

Theron looked back toward the Ash-King.

For once, he listened without argument.

Darius lowered his sword.

His hand shook now.

Kael had never seen that before.

Iris’s knives were bloody.

Sera had sunk to one knee behind Galahad.

Her empty hand rested on the ground.

The Mana Motes around her were gone.

The Ash-King drew another breath.

Weak.

Then another.

Stronger.

Kael’s stomach tightened.

Of course.

Galahad heard the change too.

”So we are not done.”

Darius’s answer was quiet.

”No.”

The Ash-King’s chest glow returned.

Faint.

But returning.

The fourth attempt had nearly broken its body.

Nearly was still not enough.

And for the first time since entering the basin, Kael understood that the next exchange might decide whether the Ash-King died first or whether exhaustion finished the people trying to kill it.
