The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

The creature forced its way between two trees that should have stopped anything smaller than a wagon.

One trunk split near the base.

The second bent until roots tore from the soil.

Then the drake stepped through.

Kael had seen enough drakes in the last several days to recognize the shape before the System finished analyzing it, but familiarity made this one worse rather than easier. The body followed the same broad pattern—four powerful legs, heavy chest, hooked claws, a long tail built to break bone, wings folded tight along its sides—but everything looked pushed too far. Its shoulders stood higher than the mature drakes they had fought on the service road, its scales bulged unevenly along the neck, and heat shimmered around the seams between them.

The black burn crossing its chest looked almost delicate by comparison.

A narrow line ran from the right shoulder toward the center of the sternum, cutting across several scales before ending in a patch of raw flesh.

Veyra stared at it.

”That should have killed it.”

Milo looked from the drake to her.

”You are becoming less reassuring by the second.”

The creature turned its head.

Its eyes found Veyra.

That answered one question.

The drake remembered her.

Its jaw opened.

Veyra stepped backward.

Not far.

Enough for Kael to notice.

Galahad noticed too.

”You fought it before?”

Veyra raised the metal rod.

”I hit it before.”

”That was not the question.”

”No.”

The drake roared.

Heat rolled into the survey cut.

People deeper inside flinched.

Tovin made a strained sound from his litter.

Kael’s System opened across his vision.

[Combat Analysis]

Draconic entity

Physical development: above mature baseline

Heat output: extreme

Mana circulation: irregular

Foreign magical residue detected

Kael’s stomach tightened.

There.

Again.

Not natural.

He focused harder.

[Foreign residue concentration: moderate-high]

Distribution: widespread

Physiological stress: severe

Pain response: suppressed

Self-preservation behavior: impaired

The memory of the pressure chamber returned immediately.

The enhanced drake that had kept fighting until its own body failed.

Kael looked at Galahad.

”Altered.”

Darius’s sword came up.

”Like the one below?”

”Yes.”

Veyra’s eyes moved toward Kael.

”You can see that?”

”Enough of it.”

”Then you know killing it quickly would be helpful.”

Milo glanced at her rod.

”You first.”

She ignored him.

The drake lowered its head.

Galahad took one look at the narrow entrance to the survey cut and made the decision.

”Do not let it enter.”

Nobody argued.

That would have turned the shelter into a tomb.

Darius moved to the left side of the entrance.

Galahad took the right.

Kael positioned several steps behind and between them, enough room to use Ice without trapping either man. Rask joined the second line with three fighters, while Milo stayed farther back and to the side because of Tovin.

Sera had already climbed onto a shelf of stone above the interior wall.

She had a clear angle through the entrance.

Her bow came up.

Kael saw her hand brush the quiver.

Fourteen.

One count.

Then she drew.

Veyra stepped toward the opposite wall.

Her metal rod hummed.

Thin orange-white lines appeared along the carved grooves.

Milo noticed immediately.

”That focus is venting.”

Veyra did not look at him.

”I know.”

”You used it recently.”

”I know.”

”How recently?”

The drake charged.

Veyra looked at Milo.

”Now is not the time.”

”Finally, something we agree on.”

The drake slammed into the entrance.

Darius met the first claw.

He did not block it.

He redirected.

Steel hit scale.

Aura reinforced his stance.

The claw struck the stone pillar instead of his chest.

Rock cracked.

Galahad cut beneath the opposite foreleg.

His sword drew blood.

Not much.

The drake barely noticed.

Kael’s System warned.

[Thermal buildup increasing]

”Breath!”

Darius and Galahad separated.

Kael drove his sword down.

Cold spread.

Frost Wall.

Not high.

Not thick.

Angled.

The same principle he had used on the service road.

The drake released fire.

This breath was hotter.

Much hotter.

The first layer of Ice vanished almost immediately.

Steam detonated through the entrance.

Kael poured more mana into the base.

Bad.

Too expensive.

He felt it instantly.

The wall cracked.

Milo raised one hand from farther inside.

Wind hit the steam sideways.

Not the flame.

The aftermath.

It pulled scalding vapor away from the wounded before it could roll deeper into the cut.

Milo’s face tightened with the effort.

Sera fired through the thinning cloud.

The arrow struck the drake’s exposed throat seam.

Not deep.

Enough to interrupt the next inhalation.

Thirteen.

The number came into Kael’s mind before he wanted it there.

Sera’s hand returned to the quiver.

Did not count again.

Good.

Darius attacked.

His sword cut across the front of the drake’s chest.

Right over Veyra’s old burn.

The damaged scales cracked wider.

The drake screamed.

Veyra moved.

The metal rod came up.

Mana condensed around its tip.

Not flame.

Kael had expected fire from the damage.

This looked different.

The air itself brightened along a thin line.

Then something flashed.

No projectile.

No visible bolt.

Only a straight burst of concentrated heat that crossed the distance in an instant.

It struck the old wound.

The drake jerked backward.

The smell of scorched blood filled the entrance.

Milo stared.

”That is disgusting.”

Veyra staggered.

Sera looked down.

”You all right?”

”Fine.”

Blood had started beneath Veyra’s nose again.

Not fine.

The drake recovered.

Too quickly.

The System flashed.

[Foreign residue activity increasing]

Pain suppression intensified

Thermal output rising

Kael understood the pattern.

”It gets worse when hurt.”

Darius stepped back into position.

”Then hurt it faster.”

That sounded like Darius.

The drake charged again.

This time it did not attack Darius first.

It went for Veyra.

She saw it.

Too late.

The creature twisted sideways through the entrance and threw its entire shoulder toward her.

Kael moved.

Ice formed beneath his boots.

Rime-Step.

He crossed the space before the impact.

Not enough to stop the drake.

Enough to reach Veyra.

Kael hit her with his shoulder.

Both of them fell aside.

The drake smashed into the wall.

Stone exploded.

Kael landed hard on his bruised ribs.

Pain stole half a breath.

Veyra rolled.

The rod left her hand.

It struck the ground several feet away.

Her eyes widened.

The drake turned.

Found the rod.

Then looked back at her.

Interesting.

It recognized the weapon.

”Kael!”

Darius.

Kael rolled again.

The claw hit the ground where his leg had been.

He came up on one knee.

Veyra scrambled toward the rod.

The drake lunged.

Sera fired.

The arrow struck its eye ridge.

Twelve.

The creature’s head snapped sideways.

Veyra reached the rod.

”Thank you.”

Sera called from above.

”Don’t waste it.”

Veyra looked up once.

That almost became a smile.

Almost.

The drake slammed its tail into the entrance pillar.

The entire survey cut shook.

People screamed deeper inside.

Rock dust fell.

Iris shouted from the rear.

”Wall’s holding!”

For now.

Kael’s System immediately analyzed the impact.

[Structural Warning]

Entrance pillar stability reduced

Repeated heavy impact may compromise defensive position

Galahad heard Kael swear.

”What?”

”Pillar.”

”How many hits?”

”I don’t know.”

”Useful.”

Kael looked at him.

Galahad almost smiled.

Then the drake came again.

Rask moved this time.

Not toward the head.

Toward the injured chest.

He waited until Darius forced the creature’s front claw aside, then drove his blade between two already cracked scales.

The drake convulsed.

Rask pulled free.

Too slowly.

The tail swept.

Kel shouted from deeper inside.

”Rask!”

Rask ducked.

The tail passed over him.

One of his fighters did not.

The man took the hit across the shoulder and spun into the stone.

Rask’s head snapped around.

”Get him back!”

Mara and another worker dragged the man toward the inner wall.

Rask did not follow.

He wanted to.

Kael saw it.

He stayed.

Character was becoming easier to read when everyone was tired enough to stop hiding it.

The drake inhaled.

Sera drew.

Kael saw the arrow.

Plain shaft.

No special head.

Twelve.

If she fired.

The throat seam opened.

Sera hesitated.

A fraction.

Enough for Milo to look up.

He did not speak.

Good.

Sera released.

Eleven.

The arrow entered the seam.

The drake released fire anyway.

Kael raised Ice.

Darius shouted, ”No!”

Kael stopped.

Darius had seen something he had not.

The swordsman stepped into the breath path and struck downward.

Not at the drake.

At the fractured stone beneath its foreleg.

Aura drove through the blade.

The road-like floor broke.

The drake’s foot dropped.

Its head jerked.

The flame tore upward.

Fire scorched the ceiling instead of the group.

Kael stared.

Darius looked over.

”Save your mana.”

Right.

Kael felt stupid for half a second.

Then grateful.

Preserve decisions.

He adjusted.

The drake pulled its trapped foot free.

Galahad attacked the opposite side.

Iris appeared.

Kael had almost forgotten she had moved from the rear wall.

She slipped along the drake’s blind side.

No sword raised.

No dramatic attack.

She threw something.

A loop.

Rope caught one of the creature’s damaged wing joints.

She ran the other end around a stone spur.

”Rask!”

He understood.

Rask seized the rope.

Two others joined.

They pulled.

The drake twisted.

Its damaged wing snapped outward.

Sera saw the opening.

Ten.

Her arrow struck the joint.

The drake roared.

Iris shouted, ”Again!”

Rask pulled harder.

The wing opened farther.

Darius crossed.

His sword cut through membrane and tendon.

The wing collapsed uselessly.

The drake’s balance shifted.

Kael saw the next move before the System told him.

Frozen Step.

A thin layer of Ice flashed beneath the rear foot as the creature tried to compensate.

The claw slipped.

Not much.

Enough.

The drake crashed sideways into the damaged pillar.

The survey cut shook again.

The System flashed red.

[Structural integrity deteriorating]

Galahad looked toward Kael.

”No more wall impacts.”

Milo laughed from the rear.

”Excellent rule.”

Kael looked at the drake.

Still moving.

Still fighting.

Too much.

The creature should have tried to escape by now.

Any normal animal would have.

The foreign residue would not let it.

Kael hated that more than the monster itself.

It had been turned into something incapable of choosing survival.

The drake pushed upright.

Veyra raised the rod again.

Milo looked at her.

”Don’t.”

She ignored him.

The grooves lit.

Milo stepped closer.

”You’re already overloading that thing.”

Veyra’s jaw tightened.

”It can take one more.”

”Can you?”

”Probably.”

Milo’s face changed.

”That word is carrying this expedition.”

Veyra fired.

The concentrated heat line struck the drake’s chest again.

The burned channel deepened.

The creature staggered.

Veyra dropped to one knee.

The rod went dark.

Sera looked down at her.

”Done?”

”For now.”

Milo muttered, ”Excellent.”

The drake turned toward Veyra.

Again.

It remembered pain.

Not strategy.

Pain.

Kael understood.

”Use her.”

Veyra looked at him.

”Excuse me?”

”It keeps targeting you.”

”I noticed.”

”Make it commit.”

She stared.

Milo looked between them.

”I dislike how quickly nobles say things like that.”

Kael ignored him.

”Can you move?”

Veyra got to her feet.

”Yes.”

”Then move toward Darius.”

Darius understood before she did.

He shifted.

Galahad did too.

They opened space.

Veyra looked at the drake.

Then at Kael.

”If I die—”

”You can complain afterward.”

Milo pointed.

”That was mine.”

Veyra laughed once.

Wrong moment.

Perfect moment.

Then she stepped into the entrance.

The drake saw her.

Its entire body changed.

Head low.

Shoulders forward.

Heat rising.

Veyra backed toward Darius.

Slow.

The drake followed.

Kael’s System mapped the angle.

[Charge probability increasing]

Veyra kept moving.

One step.

Two.

The creature charged.

”Now!”

Veyra threw herself aside.

Darius stepped across the drake’s path.

Not blocking.

Guiding.

His sword struck the outside of the skull.

Aura amplified the redirection.

The drake’s head turned.

Galahad attacked the already burned chest.

Kael moved with him.

Frostbite Edge.

Cold raced along his sword.

He cut through the heat-blackened wound.

Steam exploded from blood.

The drake convulsed.

The damaged scales became brittle.

Kael felt the opening.

Glacial Pierce.

He thrust.

Ice drove inward.

Not deep enough.

The creature’s chest contracted.

Kael knew immediately.

”Back!”

He withdrew.

Darius pulled him by the shoulder.

The drake released a burst of fire downward.

Not a full breath.

Pain.

Reflex.

Flame spread across the stone.

Rask jumped back.

Galahad barely cleared it.

Kael felt heat through his boots.

Milo lifted both hands.

Wind compressed.

Not toward Tovin.

Toward the entrance.

A controlled lateral blast rolled fire away from the interior.

The flames flattened and spilled outside.

Milo swayed.

Sera’s eyes went to him.

”You’re done.”

”I am not.”

”You are.”

”I remain conscious.”

”That is a low standard.”

”It is currently our group standard.”

Even Galahad laughed.

One breath.

Then the drake rose again.

Sera’s hand touched her quiver.

Ten.

Kael saw her face.

She did not like that number.

Milo saw it too.

This time he said nothing.

Good.

Sera drew.

The drake’s wounded chest faced them.

Darius prepared.

Kael could see the problem.

They had openings.

Not enough damage.

The foreign residue kept forcing the drake beyond ordinary limits.

Eventually the body would fail.

But waiting for that inside a collapsing shelter was a terrible plan.

The System scanned.

[Target physiological integrity declining]

Foreign residue maintaining abnormal output

Critical weak points:

1. Damaged chest channel

2. Right neck seam

3. Left wing root — severe structural failure

4. Cardiorespiratory stress extreme

Kael looked at Sera.

She could hit the neck seam.

Maybe.

Too narrow.

He looked at Darius.

Darius could reach the chest.

But the drake would counter.

Veyra’s focus was spent.

Milo was nearly empty.

Galahad injured.

Rask exhausted.

Everyone had something left.

Nobody had enough alone.

That was the answer.

”Galahad.”

The Guild leader looked over.

Kael pointed.

”Chest is failing.”

Galahad understood.

”Everyone on one opening?”

”Yes.”

Darius nodded.

Rask did not ask.

Sera drew.

Iris moved.

Milo groaned.

”I hate plans that begin with everyone.”

Galahad raised his sword.

”Then survive it.”

The drake lunged again.

Darius went first.

Still Guard.

The claw struck.

He redirected.

Rask hit the opposite foreleg.

The drake shifted.

Iris pulled the damaged wing rope.

The creature’s balance broke.

Galahad attacked the chest.

One cut.

Not enough.

Kael followed.

Frostbite Edge.

Same line.

Cold spread deeper.

The drake roared.

Sera released.

Nine.

The arrow struck the right neck seam.

Perfect.

The creature’s head jerked.

Milo moved last.

Not Force Pulse.

Not Barrier Arc.

Something cheaper.

A tight Air Burst.

He aimed it at Sera’s embedded arrow.

Wind struck the shaft.

The arrow drove deeper.

Sera stared.

Milo looked up.

”I helped.”

”Don’t ruin it.”

The drake staggered.

Darius stepped.

One.

Two.

Three.

Kael recognized the sequence.

Not the full Three-Step Severance this time.

Darius changed after the second step.

Interesting.

He abandoned the planned third line because the drake moved differently.

Preserve decisions.

Adapt.

His sword entered the chest wound instead.

Deep.

The drake froze.

For the first time, its eyes cleared.

Only for a second.

The rage vanished.

Pain remained.

Fear.

Kael saw it.

That made the end feel different.

Darius pulled free.

The drake collapsed.

Not dead.

Falling.

Its legs folded beneath it.

The System flashed.

[Foreign residue instability critical]

Physiological collapse imminent

”Back!”

Everyone moved.

The drake convulsed.

Heat surged beneath its scales.

Kael expected an explosion.

Not exactly.

The mana inside it failed unevenly.

Several scales along the chest split.

Steam and blood erupted through them.

The creature made one final sound.

Then stopped.

The heat remained.

The movement did not.

For several breaths, nobody trusted it.

Galahad looked at Kael.

”Dead?”

Kael scanned.

[Target deceased]

”Yes.”

Milo sat down.

Immediately.

No dignity involved.

He leaned back against the wall.

”I contributed significantly.”

Sera remained on the ledge.

”You pushed an arrow.”

”It was a crucial arrow.”

”It was my arrow.”

”Shared achievement.”

Sera looked down at the quiver.

Nine.

Kael saw it.

So did she.

Her hand stayed against the shafts.

Her face changed.

The fight had ended.

That was often when fear found time to arrive.

Milo noticed.

He looked toward her but did not speak.

The survey cut filled with movement again.

Healers came forward.

Rask rushed to the fighter who had taken the tail strike.

Mara checked Kel.

Davin and Eron moved deeper to help reposition the wounded.

Veyra remained near the entrance.

She stared at the dead drake.

Kael approached.

”You hit it before.”

”Yes.”

”When?”

”Before I found the eight.”

”Where?”

”Lower slope.”

Galahad joined them.

”How long ago?”

Veyra looked toward the trees.

”Less than an hour.”

Kael frowned.

”That thing followed you that far?”

”No.”

She looked at the body.

”I thought I killed it.”

Milo, from the wall, raised a hand.

”You mentioned that.”

Veyra ignored him.

Galahad looked at the wound.

”What happened?”

”I was moving north when I heard drakes. Found three running through a lower cut. That one turned on me.”

”Why?”

”I don’t know.”

”You attacked first?”

”No.”

”Then?”

”It came at me. I hit it.”

Veyra touched the metal rod.

”Full output.”

Milo opened one eye.

”That was full output?”

”Yes.”

He looked at the rod.

Then at the dead drake.

”Remind me not to irritate you.”

Sera looked down.

”You already have.”

”True.”

Kael focused on Veyra.

”You thought it died.”

”It dropped.”

”Did you check?”

Veyra’s expression answered first.

”No.”

Galahad exhaled.

Milo smiled.

”An educational day for everyone.”

Veyra glared.

”I had other drakes nearby.”

”Reasonable.”

That stopped her.

Milo shrugged.

”Still educational.”

Darius walked over.

His shoulder bandage had started bleeding through again.

Kael noticed.

So did the healer.

She pointed at him.

”Sit.”

Darius looked toward the entrance.

”Not yet.”

”Sit.”

He stared at her.

She stared back.

Darius sat.

Milo looked delighted.

”Authority confirmed.”

The healer turned toward him.

”You too.”

His smile vanished.

Sera laughed.

Not a polite sound.

A real one.

Milo looked betrayed.

”You enjoyed that.”

”Yes.”

Kael smiled.

For a few moments, the survey cut stopped feeling like a place they might die.

That mattered.

Then Iris crouched beside the drake.

”Kael.”

He joined her.

She had cut away a small piece of scale near one of the burst seams.

Beneath it, dark residue clung to tissue.

Similar to what they had seen before.

Kael’s System confirmed.

[Foreign magical residue]

Properties partially consistent with previously analyzed altered drake

Concentration: higher

Integration: unstable

Source: unresolved

Kael’s jaw tightened.

”Same kind of alteration.”

Iris looked toward the others.

”Stronger?”

”More residue.”

”That does not always mean stronger.”

”No.”

Good.

She was careful.

Kael appreciated that.

Veyra crouched opposite them.

”What alteration?”

Galahad looked at Kael.

His choice.

Kael gave her only what was established.

”We found another drake below with foreign magical energy introduced into its mana flow.”

Veyra’s expression changed.

”Introduced?”

”Yes.”

”By someone?”

”We don’t know.”

She looked at the corpse.

”You think this one was the same.”

”The System says the residue is partially consistent.”

Veyra stood.

”That explains why it got up.”

”Part of it.”

She looked toward the rod in her hand.

Then the burned chest.

Something about her expression bothered Kael.

Not guilt.

Calculation.

”You’ve seen this before?”

”No.”

Too quick.

Kael noticed.

Darius noticed too.

Neither challenged her.

Not yet.

Galahad’s attention shifted to the entrance pillar.

”We need to leave.”

Kael scanned.

[Structural Analysis]

Entrance pillar: compromised

Survey cut overall stability: moderate

Immediate collapse: unlikely

Continued heavy disturbance: not recommended

”We have time to move carefully.”

”Good.”

Galahad turned to the whole group.

”We reorganize and leave in ten.”

The healer immediately looked up.

”Twelve.”

Galahad stared.

”Ten.”

”Tovin needs twelve.”

Galahad closed his eyes.

”Twelve.”

Milo whispered, ”She wins again.”

The healer pointed without looking.

”Quiet.”

Milo obeyed.

Kael sat.

He needed it.

His ribs hurt more now that the fight was over. His right shoulder throbbed. Mana depletion sat behind his eyes like pressure.

Darius sat nearby while the healer redressed his wound.

Galahad leaned against the wall instead of pretending he did not need rest.

Rask sat beside Kel.

Davin and Eron spoke quietly a few paces away.

Lysa remained near Tovin.

Derren had started talking again.

Good sign.

Mara distributed water.

Iris checked the entrance.

Everyone had a job.

Sera stayed on the ledge.

Kael looked up.

She had placed her bow across her knees.

Then she emptied her quiver.

Milo noticed before anyone else.

He said nothing.

Sera laid the arrows beside her.

Nine usable.

One cracked.

One ruined.

She arranged them in a line.

Counted.

Once.

Then again.

Kael looked away.

This felt private.

Milo did not.

He watched without staring.

There was a difference.

Sera picked up the ruined arrow.

The one recovered from the previous drake.

She rolled it between both hands.

The shaft was bent enough that no competent archer would fire it.

She placed it aside.

Then the cracked arrow.

She tested the split.

Placed it beside the ruined one.

Nine remained.

Her breathing changed.

Milo climbed partway up the ledge.

Not beside her.

Below.

”Sera.”

She kept looking at the arrows.

”What?”

”You made nine work.”

Her jaw tightened.

”I had fourteen.”

”Yes.”

”Now I have nine.”

”Yes.”

”You’re terrible at this.”

”At counting?”

”At whatever you think you’re doing.”

Milo considered.

”I am mostly sitting.”

”You climbed up here.”

”Partially sitting.”

Sera looked at him.

He smiled.

She did not.

Then her expression softened by a fraction.

”I had thirty-six.”

Milo nodded.

”You mentioned.”

”I came back with none.”

There.

Kael heard it.

He did not move.

Milo’s smile disappeared.

Sera stared at the arrows.

”Nobody else did.”

The words were quiet.

Too quiet for the whole shelter.

Kael still heard them because everyone had gone quieter without meaning to.

Milo did not ask the obvious question.

Good.

Sera picked up one of the usable arrows.

”My first company.”

Her thumb moved over the shaft.

”We were escorting surveyors through the northern hills. Easy work.”

Milo waited.

Sera laughed without humor.

”Everything is easy work before it isn’t.”

No one interrupted.

Even the people who could hear knew better.

”We found a nest.”

Her fingers tightened.

”Not drakes. Different creatures. Doesn’t matter.”

Milo stayed still.

”We had enough fighters. Enough food. Enough arrows.”

Sera looked down.

”I had thirty-six.”

The number sounded different now.

Not ammunition.

Memory.

”The first attack took twelve.”

Milo’s eyes lowered.

”The second?”

Sera looked at him.

”Nine.”

Milo did the math.

Did not say it.

Sera continued.

”We retreated into a cut between two ridges. Thought we could hold until morning.”

Her breathing shortened.

Kael saw it.

Not a full flashback.

Not yet.

A door opening.

”The captain kept telling me to slow down. Pick shots. Twelve arrows should solve any fight if the archer is worth feeding.”

Sera smiled faintly.

”I hated him.”

Milo nodded.

”You mentioned.”

”He died before midnight.”

Silence.

Sera picked up another arrow.

”I kept shooting.”

Another.

”Every time someone screamed, I shot.”

Another.

”Every time something moved, I shot.”

Her fingers stopped.

”When I had one left, there were three of us.”

Milo’s face had gone completely serious.

Sera looked toward the survey cut entrance without seeing it.

”The last thing coming through the rocks was close.”

Her voice changed.

Kael felt the memory taking more of her than the present.

”I fired.”

Her hand opened.

The arrow dropped onto the stone.

”It missed.”

Milo did not move.

Sera looked at the empty space beside her arrows.

”I reached back.”

Nothing.

Her hand went behind her shoulder as though the old quiver were still there.

Then stopped.

Kael understood.

Not just running out.

The moment after.

Someone needed her.

She had nothing.

Sera pulled her hand back.

”One of them died before I found a broken spear I could use.”

Her face hardened.

”The other died before dawn.”

Milo lowered his gaze.

Sera took a breath.

”I came back alone.”

There it was.

Thirty-six.

Not enough.

Never enough again.

Kael finally understood why she counted after every shot.

Why a damaged arrow still mattered.

Why fourteen felt dangerous.

Why nine looked like a grave.

Milo spoke carefully.

”You didn’t come back because you saved arrows.”

Sera’s eyes snapped toward him.

”No.”

”You came back because you survived.”

”That is not better.”

”I didn’t say it was.”

She stared.

Good answer.

Milo continued.

”You think if you had thirty-seven—”

”I would have had one more shot.”

”Yes.”

”That could have mattered.”

”Yes.”

Again.

No denial.

No comforting lie.

Sera looked at him.

Anger lost some of its shape.

Milo climbed one step higher.

”But you’ve spent years punishing every quiver since then for being finite.”

Sera went still.

That hit.

Too accurately.

”Careful.”

”I know.”

”You don’t.”

”No.”

He looked at the nine arrows.

”I know what it looks like when someone keeps counting because the number feels safer than the fight.”

Sera studied him.

”What do you count?”

Milo smiled faintly.

”Mana.”

Of course.

Kael had never thought of it.

Milo joked constantly about being tired, but he knew his reserves.

Every spell.

Every Force application.

Every barrier.

He counted too.

Different wound.

Same habit.

Sera looked at him.

”And when you run out?”

”I become charming.”

”You’re doomed.”

That got a laugh from both of them.

Small.

Needed.

Sera picked up the nine arrows.

She returned them to the quiver.

Then the cracked one.

She hesitated.

Placed it outside the usable bundle.

The ruined one stayed on the stone.

Milo noticed.

”You leaving it?”

Sera looked at it for a long time.

”Yes.”

That was all.

No breakthrough.

No new power.

No System notification.

Just one ruined arrow left behind.

Kael thought that might matter more.

Twelve minutes ended.

Galahad stood.

”Move.”

The expedition rose.

Sera climbed down from the ledge.

Her quiver looked almost empty now.

Nine usable arrows.

One cracked emergency shaft she knew she should not trust.

For the first time since Kael had begun noticing, she did not touch them immediately after landing.

She simply lifted her bow.

Milo looked at her.

She caught him.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

Sera narrowed her eyes.

”That phrase really is contagious.”

Milo grinned.

Then Tovin groaned.

Everyone’s attention shifted.

The healer checked him.

Stable enough.

They lifted the litters.

Rask helped Kel stand.

Davin and Eron took positions near the newer injured.

Veyra tucked the darkened metal rod inside her cloak.

Kael noticed.

”So it’s useless now?”

She looked at him.

”Temporarily.”

”How long?”

”Depends.”

”On?”

”How much you annoy me.”

Milo gasped from behind them.

”She learned.”

Sera smiled.

This time Veyra did too.

Galahad led them out.

The dead altered drake remained behind in the damaged survey cut.

Iris marked the location.

Kael made sure she did.

Evidence mattered.

Answers could wait.

Survival could not.

They moved north again.

For nearly fifteen minutes, nothing attacked them.

No drakes.

No mysterious heat.

No collapsing stone.

That alone felt suspicious.

The terrain climbed toward a ridge.

Iris reached the top first.

She stopped.

Galahad approached.

”What?”

Iris did not answer immediately.

Kael climbed beside her.

Then understood.

The ridge gave them their first broad view east.

The western forest spread below in dark layers.

Beyond it, much farther than Kael expected, a thin road cut through the trees.

The charcoal road.

Their route home.

Not close.

But visible.

Derren saw it from his litter.

”That it?”

Mara stepped up.

”Yes.”

Relief moved through the group.

Quiet.

Almost afraid of itself.

Milo sat on a rock.

”I have never loved a bad road more.”

Sera looked down at him.

”You love roads?”

”Today.”

Galahad studied the distance.

”How long with wounded?”

Iris considered the slope.

”Two hours if nothing goes wrong.”

Everyone looked at her.

Iris sighed.

”Three.”

Milo nodded.

”Much more believable.”

Kael looked toward the charcoal road.

Home was still far.

But for the first time since entering the Caldera, it felt like a direction instead of an idea.

Then the System opened.

Not a threat warning.

Not combat.

[Long-Range Environmental Analysis]

Eastern route accessibility: probable

Draconic movement: elevated between current position and extraction corridor

Geothermal escalation continuing

Unresolved high-output mana disturbances remain southwest

Kael dismissed it.

Not now.

They had a road.

They had wounded.

They had people still alive.

That was enough.

Galahad looked around at the exhausted group.

”Five minutes.”

Nobody complained.

Not even the healer.

Milo lay flat on the ground.

Sera sat beside him.

Not close.

Close enough.

Veyra watched them both, then looked toward Kael.

”Are they always like this?”

Kael considered.

”I think they’re getting worse.”

Sera threw a leaf at him.

It missed.

Milo looked at the leaf.

”Your ammunition problem has become severe.”

Sera stared.

For one second, Kael thought the joke had gone too far.

Then she picked up another leaf.

Milo scrambled upright.

”No.”

Sera threw it.

He ducked.

Kel laughed hard enough to hurt his ribs.

Rask told him to stop.

Kel laughed harder.

Derren joined.

Even Lysa smiled.

Tovin slept through all of it.

And on a ridge above a dying road, with the Caldera still moving behind them and too many dangers waiting ahead, the expedition laughed anyway.

Not because they had forgotten where they were.

Because for five minutes, they were still people instead of survivors.

Then Galahad stood.

Everyone else followed.

And they started down toward the charcoal road.
