The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

The Ash-King’s chest glow strengthened by degrees rather than all at once, which somehow made it worse. Pale light seeped back through the cracks in its throat and sternum while the enormous creature remained hunched on three reliable limbs, its ruined rear leg dragging uselessly through the ash. Black blood ran from the deep wound beneath the damaged dorsal scales, dripping heavily enough that Kael could sense each impact against the ground even without looking. Anyone seeing only the injuries might have believed the fight was nearly finished, but Kael had watched this creature survive too many moments that should have ended it. He no longer trusted appearances, especially not when the white pinpoint inside its sunken black eye was still moving.

Darius stood a few paces to Kael’s right with his sword in one hand and the other arm hanging nearly useless. His breathing had become slow and deliberate, not because he had recovered but because anything faster pulled against damaged ribs and shoulder tissue. Iris remained farther left with both field knives drawn now that her physical arrows were gone, while Galahad held the center behind them, blood dried along the side of his face where he had struck the pillar. Sera had dropped to one knee near him, bow still in hand but drawing arm trembling from Mana-Weaving exhaustion. Theron Vance stood closest to the Ash-King’s wounded side, unarmed because his bent weapon remained buried beneath the broken dorsal scale where he had driven it during the last exchange.

Six people remained in the immediate fight.

Six exhausted people.

The Ash-King breathed in.

Kael heard the sound this time.

Dry.

Deep.

Wrong.

Ash on the ground crawled toward its mouth in thin gray streams.

Galahad lifted one hand. ”Nobody advances.”

Vance looked toward him without taking his eyes off the creature. ”It is almost down.”

”So were you three times today.”

Theron’s jaw tightened. ”That is not the same.”

”It is exactly the same lesson.”

The Ash-King’s front claws flexed.

Galahad lowered his voice. ”You see blood and think the next strike ends it. That thing has spent the entire fight teaching us what happens when we decide what it can survive.”

Vance said nothing.

Darius shifted his footing.

Kael noticed immediately.

”What?”

Darius did not look at him. ”Its breathing changed.”

Kael watched the Ash-King.

The creature inhaled again.

This time the chest expanded less.

The pale glow brightened more.

Pressure without volume.

That made no sense.

Kael opened the System.

[Respiratory pattern altered]

[Observed airflow intake reduced]

[Internal mana density increasing]

[Thermal concentration increasing in thoracic cavity]

[Mechanism unresolved]

Kael felt the cold in his stomach deepen.

”It is not filling its lungs the same way.”

Galahad looked toward him. ”Meaning?”

”I don’t know.”

Theron almost laughed. ”Excellent.”

Kael ignored him. ”Less air. More mana. More heat.”

Darius’s gaze moved toward the Ash-King’s chest.

”Then it may not be preparing the same breath.”

Everyone understood what that meant.

The Ash-King had changed again.

Sera forced herself upright using the bow as support. ”Can it still make a full cloud?”

Kael looked at the System.

Nothing.

”No idea.”

”Good.”

Her voice had become dry again.

That was probably better than fear.

The Ash-King lowered its head.

Kael expected a charge.

Instead, the creature stepped backward.

Everyone froze.

One step.

Then another.

Its ruined rear leg scraped through ash.

Its right wing remained partly open to counterbalance the broken gait.

Theron frowned.

”It’s retreating.”

Galahad immediately said, ”No.”

Vance looked at him. ”You can see it.”

”I can see it moving backward.”

”That is what retreating looks like.”

Darius answered quietly. ”Not always.”

The Ash-King backed toward the broken central shelf.

It never looked away from them.

Tiny white pupil moving.

Measuring.

Kael felt something wrong with the rhythm.

Each backward step became slightly easier.

Not because the leg improved.

Because the creature was choosing ground it knew.

Iris saw it.

”The ash is deeper there.”

Everyone looked toward her.

She pointed with one knife. ”Loose deposit. Old layer under new.”

Galahad’s expression changed.

”What happens if we follow?”

Iris studied the ground.

”We sink more than it does.”

Theron stared at the creature.

The Ash-King took another step backward into the deeper gray.

Its massive feet disappeared halfway to the ankle.

Its weight compressed the ash.

The surface around it barely shifted afterward.

Kael understood.

”Trap.”

Vance exhaled through his nose.

Galahad glanced at him.

Theron said, ”Do not.”

Galahad’s mouth twitched despite everything. ”I did not say anything.”

”You were going to.”

”Probably.”

The Ash-King stopped retreating.

Then it lowered its head.

Its remaining intact dorsal vents opened.

Nothing came out.

That frightened Kael more than smoke would have.

The pale glow beneath the neck scales intensified.

Sera lifted her bow.

No arrow.

Her hand opened.

No Mana Motes came.

Not enough.

She looked at her empty fingers and closed them again.

”I’m still dry.”

Galahad nodded. ”Then do not force it.”

Theron glanced toward her. ”How long?”

”I don’t know.”

That answer irritated him.

Sera saw.

”So we match.”

Theron stared.

Then the Ash-King moved.

Not forward.

Its right wing snapped outward.

The powerful limb struck the loose ash beside it.

A wall of gray erupted.

Kael barely had time to cover his eyes.

The Ash-King beat the wing again.

Not to fly.

To move the battlefield.

Ash rolled toward them in a ground-hugging surge.

”UP!” Iris shouted.

Everyone moved for higher stone.

Kael reached the nearest basalt spur and climbed one step before his burned calf failed.

His foot slipped.

His knee struck rock.

Pain flashed through his leg.

Darius caught the back of his armor with his good hand.

”Use the other leg.”

”I had not considered that.”

”Consider faster.”

Kael pushed.

The ash wave hit below them.

Not hot enough to burn.

Not this time.

But dense.

Heavy.

It filled every depression in the shelf and turned the ground into a gray sea.

The Ash-King beat its wing again.

Another wave.

Visibility disappeared from the knees down.

Iris climbed higher.

”It is filling the low ground!”

Galahad immediately understood. ”It wants footing.”

Theron looked toward the creature.

”No.”

His face changed.

”It wants us higher.”

Kael looked around.

The remaining elevated positions were narrow.

Broken pillars.

Small ridges.

Places where six people could not spread properly.

The Ash-King had spent the fight learning what spreading did for them.

Now it was taking that away.

Darius looked toward Galahad.

”Move before it chooses for us.”

Galahad pointed toward the eastern edge. ”Open shelf. Less cover, more room.”

Theron frowned. ”The breath will have a clean line.”

”Yes.”

”So will we.”

Galahad started moving.

No perfect position.

Only a less bad one.

The group crossed the rising ash.

Iris went first.

Kael followed while Darius remained close enough to intervene without carrying him.

Sera came behind Galahad.

Theron brought up the rear.

The Ash-King watched.

It did not chase.

That was wrong.

Kael looked back.

The creature’s chest glow had reached almost white.

”Galahad.”

”I see it.”

”No, look at the ground.”

The ash beneath the Ash-King was moving.

Not outward.

Inward.

Being pulled toward the creature through channels formed by its own wingbeats.

Air.

The Ash-King had changed the local airflow.

Iris stopped.

Her head turned.

”Down!”

Too late.

The creature exhaled.

Not forward.

Up.

A pressurized column of ash and toxic gas blasted almost vertically into the air.

Everyone stared.

For one heartbeat, the attack appeared to miss them entirely.

Then the high thermal current caught it.

The column spread.

A gray ceiling formed overhead.

Iris’s face went pale.

”It’s coming down.”

Galahad shouted, ”MOVE!”

The Ash-King had created ashfall.

Not drifting soot.

A dense descending cloud spread above the eastern shelf and began dropping across the entire area.

There was no single direction to dodge.

Kael ran.

Ash struck his shoulders.

Hot.

Not full breath hot.

Hot enough.

The air became dry immediately.

Sera coughed.

Galahad pulled cloth over his mouth.

Darius lowered his face.

The ash thickened.

Kael could hear it landing on armor like fine rain.

Then visibility collapsed.

Ten yards.

Five.

Three.

”Iris!” Galahad called.

”Here!”

Her voice came from the left.

”Route?”

”No clean one.”

”Best.”

”Forward ten. Then right.”

They followed her voice.

The Ash-King entered the ashfall.

Kael did not see it.

He heard nothing.

That was worse.

Blood Sensing.

He reached.

Cinderblood.

Everywhere.

Old blood.

New blood.

The battlefield had too much.

He narrowed.

Fresh.

Moving.

A heavy line crossed behind them.

”Behind!”

Everyone turned.

The Ash-King came out of the gray at walking speed.

No charge.

No warning.

Its corpse-like face appeared first, white pupils sharp inside black eyes.

Sera was closest.

The Ash-King knew it.

Its jaws opened.

Galahad shoved her.

The bite closed where she had stood.

Galahad’s shoulder struck the lower jaw.

He went down.

The Ash-King lifted one claw.

Sera rolled.

Not away.

Toward Galahad.

She grabbed the back of his armor and pulled.

The claw came down.

Kael used Ice Wedge.

A sharp wedge of ice erupted beneath one talon.

The claw struck unevenly.

The talon slid.

Stone shattered beside Galahad instead of through him.

Kael’s wedge cracked instantly under the weight.

Enough.

Sera got Galahad clear.

The Ash-King’s head turned toward Kael.

Of course.

Kael had become tired of being correct.

Darius moved between them.

The Ash-King snapped.

Darius used the sword.

One hand.

No attempt to overpower.

The blade touched the side of the upper jaw.

Aura flashed.

He redirected the bite just enough.

Then his knees buckled.

Kael saw.

Darius recovered.

Barely.

The Ash-King saw too.

Its second attack came immediately.

No pause.

A foreclaw swept low.

Darius could not redirect both.

Iris came in from the side.

Two knives.

She struck the creature’s injured front leg.

Not to stop the claw.

To make the foot hesitate.

One blade entered the seam she had opened earlier.

The Ash-King flinched.

The sweep shortened.

Darius stepped back.

The claw missed his chest.

Caught his thigh.

Armor tore.

Darius spun and fell.

Kael’s stomach dropped.

”DARIUS!”

The Ash-King raised the claw again.

Theron hit it.

With his body.

Again.

Unarmed.

Vance slammed both hands against the side of the creature’s wrist and drove with his legs.

Not enough to move the limb.

Enough to alter the timing.

Kael reached Darius.

Blood on the thigh.

Not arterial.

The System confirmed before Kael finished checking.

[Laceration: moderate]

[Mobility impairment probable]

Darius tried to stand.

Kael grabbed him.

”No.”

Darius looked at him.

”Not no forever.”

”Then choose a shorter word next time.”

Kael got under his good side.

Darius stood.

Badly.

The Ash-King hit Vance with the back of its wrist.

Theron flew through the ash.

Kael lost sight of him.

”THERON!”

A cough answered.

Alive.

Galahad staggered upright.

His shoulder hung stiffly now.

He looked toward Darius’s leg.

Then Kael’s calf.

Then Sera.

Then Iris.

Then where Vance had disappeared.

His face changed.

Not fear.

Arithmetic.

”We are losing movement.”

Darius answered while leaning partly on Kael. ”Yes.”

Galahad looked toward the Ash-King.

The creature’s breathing remained deep.

The ashfall continued.

Its ruined rear leg dragged.

Its wing remained broken.

Its body was failing.

And still it had taken more mobility from them in less than a minute.

Sera opened her hand.

Mana Motes appeared.

Two.

Then four.

She breathed.

Did not grab them.

Let them gather.

Kael saw.

The Ash-King saw too.

Its head turned.

Sera’s eyes narrowed.

”It really hates this.”

Galahad looked at her. ”Can you make one?”

”Maybe.”

”That is not yes.”

”No.”

”Then move while you decide.”

Sera moved.

Good.

The Ash-King followed.

Too interested.

Kael understood.

”It recognizes the gathering.”

Darius leaned against him.

”Then use that.”

Kael looked over.

Darius’s face remained pale.

”What?”

”You do not need the arrow.”

Kael stared.

Then understood.

Sera did too.

She looked at Darius.

The corner of his mouth moved slightly.

Not a smile.

Close.

Sera raised her empty hand.

Mana Motes gathered brighter.

She exaggerated the motion.

The Ash-King’s head tracked her immediately.

Sera moved left.

The creature turned left.

No arrow.

Just threat.

Galahad saw the opportunity.

”Iris, right.”

Iris moved.

”Vance?”

Theron emerged from the ash on the opposite side, one arm around his ribs.

”Still here.”

”Good. Circle.”

The Ash-King followed Sera.

She kept gathering Mana Motes.

Not enough to complete the arrow.

Enough to look like she might.

Its attention stayed.

Iris reached the exposed side.

The embedded bent weapon still protruded beneath the broken dorsal scale.

She grabbed it.

Theron saw.

”Leave that.”

Iris looked at him.

”It is mine.”

”You are unarmed.”

”I noticed.”

”You want it back?”

”Yes.”

”Then help.”

Vance reached her.

Together they took hold.

Kael almost laughed despite everything.

The Ash-King was still watching Sera.

Galahad whispered, ”Not yet.”

Sera kept moving.

Mana Motes flickering.

Her hand shook.

The bluff cost mana too.

Important.

The Ash-King’s head lowered.

Sera changed direction.

Its body turned.

The exposed side opened more.

Galahad raised one hand.

”Now.”

Iris and Vance pulled.

The weapon moved.

Not out.

Sideways.

The broken scale tore farther.

Dark flesh opened.

Black blood poured.

The Ash-King screamed.

Its head snapped away from Sera.

Theron and Iris released the weapon and ran.

Good.

The Ash-King turned toward the wound.

Sera stopped gathering.

Mana Motes dispersed.

She nearly collapsed.

Galahad reached her.

”Worth it?”

She inhaled.

”Ask me later.”

The Ash-King lashed out with its tail.

Iris escaped.

Vance did not.

The tail struck his hip.

He dropped.

Not thrown far this time.

Worse.

He stayed down.

Kael felt something cold move through him.

”Vance?”

Theron rolled onto his back.

”Hip.”

Galahad looked toward Kael.

”How bad?”

Kael was already moving.

He helped Darius sit against a stone and ran toward Vance.

The Ash-King turned.

Kael reached Theron first.

”Can you stand?”

Vance tried.

His face went white.

”No.”

Honest.

Bad.

Kael scanned.

[Pelvic/hip trauma detected]

[Fracture probability: moderate]

[Weight-bearing not recommended]

Kael looked at him.

”You’re done.”

Theron stared.

”No.”

”You cannot stand.”

”I can fight from the ground.”

”That is not a useful sentence.”

The Ash-King came toward them.

Of course.

Kael got one arm under Vance.

”Help me.”

Theron looked offended.

Then allowed it.

They moved.

Slowly.

Too slowly.

Darius saw.

Tried to rise.

His injured thigh failed.

Iris reached Kael.

She took Vance’s other side.

Together they dragged him.

The Ash-King approached.

Galahad moved between them.

No frontline fighter left healthy enough to hold it.

Sera stood behind Galahad.

Her right hand trembling.

No arrow.

No mana for another full construct.

The Ash-King lowered its head.

The pale glow built.

Kael looked at the distance.

Too close.

They could not outrun the breath carrying two injured men.

Think.

No Crescent Blizzard safely.

Frost Wall would fail.

Blood not useful.

Ice Wedge maybe change angle.

Not enough.

Darius called from behind them.

”Kael.”

Kael looked back.

Darius pointed toward the broken dorsal wound.

Not the mouth.

The wound.

The glow inside the chest pulsed beneath it.

Kael understood.

Pressure.

The breath did not need to be blocked.

It needed somewhere else to go.

He let go of Vance.

”Iris.”

She took more of Theron’s weight.

”You better have something.”

”No idea.”

”Comforting.”

Kael ran toward the Ash-King.

Galahad swore.

Again.

The creature inhaled.

Kael aimed for the side.

Not front.

The broken scale.

The open tissue.

He reached with Blood Sensing first.

Cinderblood pulsed underneath.

A lot.

The wound opened slightly with each breath.

He used Blood Thread.

Not on blood inside the creature.

On exposed blood already crossing the wound.

Thin crimson-black strands formed.

Heavy.

Difficult.

Kael pulled.

Not outward.

Across.

He dragged the exposed blood through the wound like abrasive wire.

The Ash-King convulsed.

The wound widened.

Not much.

Enough.

Kael then used Cold Snap.

Directly into the exposed tissue.

Cold entered.

Steam exploded.

The Ash-King screamed.

The breath discharged.

The mouth released part.

The dorsal wound released another.

A violent sideways jet of superheated ash and gas exploded from the creature’s flank.

Exactly what Kael wanted.

Exactly worse than he expected.

The side blast hit him.

Kael flew.

Heat covered everything.

His armor slammed against stone.

The world flashed black.

For a moment he heard nothing.

Then sound returned in pieces.

Sera shouting.

Galahad coughing.

Ash striking stone.

Darius calling his name.

Kael opened his eyes.

Could not breathe.

Again.

He was becoming familiar with that.

Bad sign.

His chest hurt.

His left arm burned.

The System flooded his vision.

[Thermal injury increased]

[Concussive impact detected]

[Mana reserves low]

[Immediate high-output casting not recommended]

Kael laughed once.

It became a cough.

”No.”

He forced himself onto one elbow.

The Ash-King had turned away from Vance.

Good.

Its side wound now released smoke continuously.

Better.

Its mouth leaked ash.

Its chest glow flickered.

Best.

Then it walked toward Kael.

Of course.

Darius stood.

Kael stared.

The man should not have been standing.

He was.

Sword in one hand.

One leg bleeding.

Shoulder useless.

Still Darius.

”Sit down.”

Darius looked at him from twenty yards away.

”No.”

Kael almost smiled.

The Ash-King came.

Darius moved to intercept.

His injured leg shortened his stride.

Kael knew he would not reach in time.

Sera did too.

She raised the bow.

No arrow.

Her hand opened.

Nothing.

She tried.

One Mana Mote.

Two.

They flickered.

Gone.

Her face tightened.

The Ash-King closed the distance.

Kael pushed himself upright.

His legs worked.

Enough.

Darius shouted, ”Right!”

Kael went right.

The Ash-King expected Rime-Step.

Kael did not use it.

The creature overcorrected.

There.

Learning could become expectation.

Kael moved normally.

The Ash-King turned too far.

Its damaged side opened.

Darius reached.

One strike.

One-handed.

He hit the open dorsal wound.

Aura drove the sword deeper than before.

The Ash-King screamed.

Kael attacked the neck.

Frostbite Edge.

No grand technique.

No mana to waste.

The blade struck cracked scale.

Cold spread.

The creature’s head snapped toward him.

Darius withdrew.

Good.

Kael did too.

The Ash-King stumbled.

Its chest hitched.

One front leg slipped.

Iris shouted, ”LEFT FRONT!”

The overloaded foreleg.

Still.

Galahad understood.

”Take it.”

Iris went first.

Two knives.

She struck behind the joint.

One blade broke.

The other entered.

She left the broken blade.

No retrieval.

Vance shouted from the ground, ”Again!”

Iris looked toward him.

Theron pointed at the same leg.

”Make it fall.”

She moved.

Kael joined.

Darius circled.

Galahad stayed near Sera and the injured Vance, keeping the rear organized.

The Ash-King tried to turn.

Its left front leg took weight.

Iris attacked the seam.

Kael used Ice Bind.

Not the whole limb.

Only the foot.

Ice formed around the claws and attached them to basalt.

The Ash-King pulled.

The ice cracked.

Darius struck the knee.

The creature’s weight shifted.

Iris hit the seam again.

The ice broke.

But the timing was gone.

The Ash-King’s left foreleg folded.

Its chest slammed into the shelf.

The impact shook everyone.

Galahad shouted, ”BACK!”

Kael did not move.

He saw the chest.

The pale glow beneath the cracked scales was exposed differently now.

Closer to the ground.

The neck stretched.

The wounds around the dorsal side opened.

One chance.

Not kill.

Damage.

He attacked.

Glacial Pierce.

Bad choice.

He knew.

Used it anyway.

Ice condensed around the sword point.

Mana tore from him.

The thrust entered the cracked neck seam.

Deeper than before.

The Ash-King jerked.

Kael drove.

The blade stopped.

Something hard inside.

Bone.

Scale.

He could not go farther.

The Ash-King’s eye turned toward him.

Too close.

Kael released the sword.

Not the blade from the wound.

The grip.

He jumped backward.

The creature snapped.

The jaws closed around the sword hilt.

Metal bent.

Kael stared.

His sword.

The Ash-King shook its head.

The blade ripped free from the neck.

Then the jaws closed again.

The sword broke.

Half the blade fell into the ash.

Kael froze.

Not because of the weapon.

Because for the first time since returning to Aurelia, his hand was empty in a fight.

The Ash-King rose.

Slowly.

Kael backed away.

Darius moved to him.

Kael looked at the broken sword half.

Darius did not.

”Leave it.”

Kael swallowed.

”Yes.”

The Ash-King shook ash from its head.

Its chest glow was weaker.

Its breathing was worse.

The left foreleg now limped.

Right rear leg destroyed.

Left wing ruined.

Multiple dorsal vents ruptured.

Deep side wound.

Neck puncture.

And still the creature stood.

Kael looked at Darius.

”We are running out of ways to hurt it.”

Darius’s breathing remained controlled.

”We are also running out of creature.”

That was fair.

The Ash-King opened its mouth.

No major glow.

Just ash.

A short violent cough.

The cloud rolled between them.

Darius grabbed Kael and pulled him sideways.

Both stumbled.

The creature followed.

Not fast anymore.

Relentless.

Galahad shouted from behind, ”WEST EDGE!”

The group moved.

Kael without a sword.

Darius limping.

Vance unable to stand.

Sera nearly empty of mana.

Iris with one intact knife.

Galahad concussed and bruised.

Six people.

Still six.

They reached the western edge.

The Ash-King followed.

Below lay the lower basin.

Broken stone.

Old ash.

One deep geothermal trench glowing red along the bottom.

Not lava river.

Heat.

Fissure.

Danger.

Kael looked down.

Then at the creature.

Galahad saw.

”No.”

Kael frowned. ”I did not say anything.”

”You made the face.”

Apparently everyone did know his face.

Theron, seated with his back against a rock, looked toward the trench.

”We drop it.”

Darius shook his head.

”Maybe.”

Vance stared. ”That is your contribution?”

Darius looked at him.

”After four attempts, you still want certainty?”

Theron stopped.

Good.

Kael looked at the trench again.

Not deep enough to kill it by fall alone.

Hot enough to matter.

Narrow enough to restrict turning.

Could become another trap.

For them too.

Iris crouched at the edge.

”Ground near the lip is fractured.”

”How fractured?” Galahad asked.

”Enough that I would not stand six people on it.”

Kael looked at the Ash-King.

Then the ground.

Then Sera.

She understood before he spoke.

”No.”

”What?”

”I do not have an arrow to break it.”

”I was not going to ask.”

”You were looking.”

Fair.

Sera opened her hand anyway.

One Mana Mote appeared.

Then another.

She stared.

Kael said nothing.

The motes stayed.

Three.

Four.

Slow.

Not enough yet.

But different.

Sera breathed.

The Ash-King walked toward them.

No need to charge.

The group had nowhere farther west without taking the trench.

Galahad looked at the creature.

Then the lip.

Then his people.

”Not a trap.”

Theron frowned.

”What?”

”We are not building a plan around it falling.”

Darius nodded.

”Good.”

Galahad pointed toward the broken ground.

”We use the edge to limit the creature. If it falls, good. If it does not, the plan still works.”

Kael looked at him.

”What is the plan?”

Galahad breathed once.

”Make it choose.”

The Ash-King approached.

Its black eye fixed on them.

Galahad began assigning positions.

”Iris, far left. Do not engage unless the foreleg commits. Darius, center but two steps back. You are not first contact anymore.”

Darius disliked that.

Accepted.

”Kael, right.”

Kael raised his empty hand.

”No sword.”

”I noticed.”

Theron lifted a broken chunk of basalt from the ground and threw it toward him.

Kael caught it badly.

”What is this?”

”A weapon.”

Kael stared.

”It is a rock.”

”Yes.”

”This is humiliating.”

Vance shifted against the stone, pain crossing his face. ”Survive long enough to complain later.”

Fine.

Kael held the rock.

Galahad looked at Sera.

”What do you have?”

She watched the Mana Motes around her hand.

”Not enough.”

”How long?”

”I don’t know.”

”Then no shot in the plan.”

Sera nodded.

Good.

Galahad pointed toward Theron.

”You stay.”

Vance smiled without humor. ”You think I have a choice?”

”No.”

”Then why say it?”

”Because you need to hear someone else make the decision.”

Theron looked at him.

Then laughed softly.

Even now.

The Ash-King reached thirty yards.

Twenty-five.

Its chest glow flickered.

Not strong enough for a full Choking Cloud.

Maybe.

No certainty.

Galahad lowered his hand.

”Wait.”

Twenty.

The Ash-King’s left foreleg limped.

Its ruined rear leg dragged.

The right wing opened for balance.

Fifteen.

Darius adjusted his stance.

Ten.

Kael’s grip tightened on the rock.

Ridiculous.

Fine.

The Ash-King lunged.

Galahad shouted, ”SPLIT!”

Kael went right.

Iris left.

Darius stepped backward.

The Ash-King had to choose.

Its head followed Kael.

Why?

No sword.

Maybe because he had hurt it most often at close range.

Maybe because it remembered Ice.

Maybe because it simply hated him.

Useful.

Kael ran toward the fractured lip.

The Ash-King followed.

Five yards.

He threw the rock.

At its eye.

Not because he expected damage.

Because eyes blink.

The rock hit the ridge above the eye.

The Ash-King flinched.

Kael changed direction.

No Rime-Step.

Normal.

Again.

The creature overcorrected less this time.

Learning.

Its left foreleg landed near the fractured edge.

Iris attacked.

One intact knife into the seam.

The leg buckled.

Darius struck the right side of the jaw.

The Ash-King turned.

Its body twisted.

The right wing opened.

The wing extended over the trench.

Galahad shouted, ”NOW PUSH THE TURN!”

Kael understood.

No weapon.

Ice.

He drove both hands toward the ground.

”FROST BURST!”

Cold exploded across the Ash-King’s front right side.

Not enough to damage.

Enough to make the foot slide on suddenly frozen ash.

Darius struck again.

The head turned farther.

Iris pulled the knife free and cut the foreleg.

The Ash-King tried to recover.

Its ruined rear leg could not.

The right wing beat once for balance.

The tip struck empty space over the trench.

The body shifted.

One foot went over the edge.

Then stopped.

The Ash-King dug both foreclaws into basalt.

Caught itself.

Theron shouted from behind them.

”OF COURSE.”

Kael almost laughed.

The creature hung partly over the trench.

Not fallen.

Still fighting.

Its claws gouged furrows through stone.

Darius raised his sword.

Galahad shouted, ”NO GREED!”

Darius stopped.

Good.

The Ash-King hauled itself upward.

Kael stared at the claws.

Then the fracture lines around them.

Not body.

Ground.

Iris saw the same thing.

She struck the stone beside the right claw with her knife pommel.

Nothing.

Darius understood.

Aura.

One precise downward strike against the crack.

Basalt split.

The right claw lost purchase.

The Ash-King dropped another foot.

Left claw held.

Kael had nothing heavy enough.

Sera whispered behind them.

”I have one.”

Everyone looked.

A Construct Arrow rested against her physical bow.

Barely.

Simple.

No Piercing refinement.

No special point.

The shaft flickered.

Her hand shook violently.

Galahad looked at the arrow.

”Can you make the shot?”

Sera looked at the left claw.

”Stone.”

Not creature.

Galahad nodded.

”Take it.”

Sera drew.

The Ash-King started pulling upward.

The angle changed.

Sera adjusted.

Ash moved around the trench.

Updraft.

She raised the aim.

Released.

The Construct Arrow flew.

It wobbled once.

Held.

Struck the fractured basalt beside the left claw.

The arrow did not penetrate deeply.

It did not need to.

Mana structure shattered inside the crack.

Stone fractured.

The Ash-King’s last grip broke.

The creature fell.

Not far.

Six yards.

Maybe seven.

Enough.

Its enormous body struck the lower trench shelf with a sound that shook the northern basin.

Ash erupted upward.

Everyone stepped back from the edge.

Nobody cheered.

Galahad had trained that out of them.

Kael looked down.

The Ash-King lay twisted below.

Its right wing folded under the body.

The damaged left wing stretched across stone.

One foreleg bent wrong now.

The ruined rear leg barely visible beneath the torso.

Smoke leaked weakly from the broken dorsal line.

For several seconds, nothing moved.

Theron dragged himself closer despite Galahad’s order and stopped before the fractured edge.

”Is it dead?”

Kael opened the System.

[High-Threat Draconic Entity]

[Life signs detected]

Kael closed his eyes.

”No.”

Theron stared downward.

”Of course.”

The Ash-King’s head moved.

Slowly.

Its black eye opened.

The white pupil found them above.

Kael felt every person on the ledge go still.

Then the creature planted one foreclaw against the trench wall.

Darius exhaled.

”No.”

The Ash-King pulled.

Its bent foreleg trembled.

The claw slipped.

It tried again.

Kael stared.

”That is impossible.”

Darius looked at him.

”Stop saying that.”

Fair.

The Ash-King began climbing out.

Again.

The monster had lost a wing, a rear leg, most of its pressure vents, huge amounts of blood, one functioning foreleg, and more scale than Kael could count.

Still climbing.

Sera sat down.

Not by choice.

Her legs simply gave.

She looked at the empty space where the Construct Arrow had been.

”No more.”

Galahad nodded.

”Then you are done shooting.”

Sera’s face tightened.

Not fear.

Acceptance.

The empty quiver no longer frightened her the same way.

Now the limit was herself.

That was different.

The Ash-King climbed another foot.

Vance stared.

Something almost reverent entered his expression for half a second.

Kael noticed.

Then Theron looked toward him.

”It has to die.”

Kael watched the Ash-King.

”Yes.”

No argument.

No one doubted that anymore.

The creature climbed.

Slow.

Painful.

Relentless.

Darius lowered his sword point toward the lip.

Galahad looked at him.

”What?”

Darius watched the damaged body below.

”We do not let it return to level ground.”

Theron nodded immediately.

Kael looked at the fractured edge.

Then down toward the creature.

”We keep it in the trench.”

Galahad considered.

Not kill it here.

Control it here.

Better.

Iris crouched.

”One wall is weaker.”

She pointed east.

”If it climbs there, the stone might break under its weight.”

Kael opened the System.

[Eastern trench wall: severe thermal fracturing]

[Collapse probability under high load: high]

There.

A plan that did not depend on the Ash-King being incapable of climbing.

A plan that used the fact that it would.

Galahad understood.

”We let it choose the weak wall.”

Vance frowned. ”How?”

Kael looked at him.

”Make every other route worse.”

Theron smiled despite the pain in his hip.

”That I can help with.”

”You cannot stand.”

”I can throw rocks.”

Kael looked at the broken stone in his own hand.

”Apparently that counts now.”

Darius actually smiled.

Very slightly.

The Ash-King climbed.

Everyone repositioned.

No victory.

Not yet.

But the battlefield had changed again.

The monster was below them now, trapped inside a narrow geothermal trench with only a few possible paths upward.

It was still alive.

Still strong enough to climb.

Still strong enough to kill anyone who assumed falling meant losing.

Kael looked at Galahad.

Galahad looked back.

Neither needed to say it.

They had finally reached a place where the Ash-King’s strength itself could become part of the trap.

Now they had to survive long enough to make that matter.
