The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

By the time darkness settled over the road station, everyone had learned that surviving the Obsidian Caldera did not mean the Caldera was finished with them.

Ash continued to fall beyond the canvas-covered windows. Not heavily enough to bury the road station or force another evacuation, but steadily enough that guards rotated outside with cloth wrapped across their mouths while others swept the accumulation from wagon covers and stable roofs. Every few hours, something deep in the western ridge groaned loudly enough to make cups tremble on tables. The road station had been built to serve caravans, patrols, and travelers caught between settlements. It had never been meant to hold this many wounded people at once. Benches became beds. Supply tables became treatment stations. Blankets covered floors. Every basin that could hold water held water, and every room that could be emptied had been emptied.

Kael had finally allowed a healer to examine him only because three separate people had threatened to stop speaking to him if he refused.

The healer had started with his head.

Apparently being struck against stone several times in one day earned special attention.

She checked his eyes, asked him questions designed to determine whether he remembered his own name, the date, where he was, and how many fingers she was holding up, then became increasingly irritated when Kael answered correctly while trying to look past her toward the hallway.

”Prince Kael.”

Kael returned his attention to her. ”Yes?”

”If you look toward that door again, I will assume you cannot focus your eyes properly.”

”I can focus.”

”Prove it.”

Kael stared directly at her.

She stared back.

Neither blinked.

After several seconds she sighed.

”Good. Now stop behaving like an injured child attempting to escape treatment.”

”I am not attempting to escape.”

”You have moved toward the door three times.”

”I was checking something.”

”What?”

Kael paused.

He actually did not remember the first two.

The healer’s expression changed.

Kael immediately regretted pausing.

”That,” she said, pointing one finger toward him, ”is why you are staying here.”

”I remembered.”

”After thinking.”

”I have had a long day.”

”So has everyone else.”

Fair.

She finished wrapping his ribs, cleaned the burn along his calf again, checked the swelling near the side of his head, and ordered him to drink two cups of water before doing anything more complicated than breathing.

Kael drank one.

The healer stared.

He drank the second.

Only then did she allow him to leave the treatment room.

The hallway outside looked nothing like it had several hours earlier. Captain Rolan’s men had turned the station into something halfway between a military post and an infirmary. A guard stood at each entrance. Another kept names on a slate near the front room, recording who had been brought in, where they were sleeping, and whether they were expected to travel in the morning. The simple act of writing names mattered more than Kael would have understood before Blackwood.

People disappeared when nobody recorded them.

Bodies became numbers when nobody wrote down who they belonged to.

Promises became vague when nobody marked which ones remained unfinished.

Kael stopped beside the slate.

The guard straightened.

”Your Highness.”

”Show me.”

The man handed it over.

Kael read slowly.

The known living survivors from the ventilation station were accounted for. The two from the transfer cut were accounted for. The survey survivor was accounted for. All seven recovered from beyond the lower gallery were accounted for. Tovin remained alive after the earlier eastward transfer, though he was still listed as critical. Lysa and Derren had reached safety. Kel had survived. Harven had survived.

Rellan Dorr remained listed under unrecovered dead.

Joren remained missing.

Veyra’s teacher remained missing.

Several Iron Vanguard dead remained below because recovery had become physically impossible after the route collapses.

Theron Vance was listed separately.

Deceased.

Recovered.

Kael stared at that word.

Recovered.

A body could apparently become something that needed recovering.

He handed the slate back.

”Do not change Joren to presumed dead.”

The guard nodded. ”Yes, Your Highness.”

”And Veyra’s teacher.”

”Yes.”

”Unknown remains unknown until we have evidence.”

The guard marked something on the slate.

Kael continued down the corridor.

The room where the Draconic Core had been stored had two guards outside now. Captain Rolan had understood the importance of the iron box without being told twice. Nobody entered without Kael, Darius, or Rolan authorizing it. No one touched the container. No one opened it.

Good.

Kael could almost feel the thing through the door.

Maybe that was imagination.

He hoped it was.

The next room belonged mostly to the Iron Vanguard.

Not because Kael had ordered them separated.

Because they had chosen to gather there.

Rask sat on the edge of a table. Mara leaned against the far wall with both arms folded. Davin occupied a chair near the window. Eron stood near the door. Two wounded Vanguard members lay on blankets along one side of the room, and another sat with his back against the wall while a bandage covered half his forearm.

Nobody spoke when Kael entered.

That worried him more than arguing would have.

Rask looked up first.

”How is your head?”

Kael touched the bandage near his temple.

”Apparently attached.”

Mara gave him a tired look.

”High standards.”

Kael looked around the room.

”You asked for me?”

Rask nodded.

”We need to decide what happens to us.”

There it was.

Not Theron.

Not yet.

Them.

Kael pulled an empty chair away from the wall and sat because his ribs appreciated the idea even if his pride did not.

”What do you think happens?”

Rask looked toward Mara.

She looked toward Davin.

Nobody wanted to speak first.

Eventually one of the wounded Vanguard men did.

”We go home.”

Rask’s face tightened.

The man noticed.

”What?”

Rask asked quietly, ”Where?”

The room changed.

The wounded man opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Kael understood.

The Iron Vanguard had been more than employment for many of them. Rask had already explained that. It took people other companies ignored, people without connections, proper records, noble sponsors, clean histories, or the right reputations. Theron had given them food, equipment, training, pay, and belonging.

When something like that ended, telling people to go home assumed they still had another one.

Mara unfolded her arms.

”The Vanguard is not continuing.”

Davin looked toward her.

”Who decided that?”

”I did.”

”That is convenient.”

”You want command?”

”No.”

”Then who?”

Davin’s jaw tightened.

Mara continued. ”Theron is dead.”

One wounded man looked away.

Another immediately answered.

”He saved us.”

Nobody disagreed.

The man pushed himself higher against the wall.

”He went back below when he could have left. He fought the Ash-King. He helped get the trapped crews out. He kept those drakes off the wounded.”

Mara nodded.

”Yes.”

”He died doing it.”

Rask looked at him.

”No.”

The man frowned.

Rask’s voice remained quiet.

”He died because he ate the core.”

Silence.

The wounded man looked toward the floor.

Rask did not let him escape the truth.

”He also saved people.”

Mara glanced toward him.

Rask continued. ”Both things happened.”

That was the first honest sentence anyone had managed.

Davin rubbed one hand over his face.

”So what are we supposed to do with that?”

Rask looked toward him.

”Live with it.”

Davin laughed once without humor.

”Excellent.”

”I did not say I had a better answer.”

Eron finally spoke from beside the door.

”What about the research?”

Nobody moved.

Kael watched them carefully.

Eron’s expression had gone harder.

”Tovin did not volunteer.”

Rask looked toward him.

”No.”

”Lysa said people were exposed.”

”Yes.”

”Theron said he did not order that.”

”Yes.”

Eron’s jaw tightened.

”And he also said he built the work.”

Rask nodded.

”Yes.”

Mara looked toward Kael.

”Are you arresting us?”

Kael answered immediately.

”No.”

Several expressions changed.

He continued before relief could become misunderstanding.

”Not as a group.”

Mara studied him.

”If evidence shows somebody knowingly experimented on unwilling people, concealed it, ordered it, or helped continue it after learning what was happening, that person answers for it.”

One of the wounded men frowned.

”To you?”

”To the law governing what happened in Blackwood territory.”

Davin looked toward Rask.

Rask said nothing.

Kael leaned forward carefully.

”But wearing the Iron Vanguard badge is not evidence that every person wearing it knew what happened.”

Mara’s eyes narrowed.

”You believe that?”

”I believe I do not get to call Theron dangerous for deciding everyone around him had to obey and then solve his death by deciding everyone who followed him is guilty.”

Nobody spoke.

Theron’s final words returned to Kael without invitation.

Make sure people can leave.

He had spent enough time building Blackwood to understand how easy it was to create rules that sounded protective from above and felt like cages underneath.

Rask looked at him.

”What happens tonight?”

”Treatment.”

”And tomorrow?”

”Statements.”

A groan came from the injured man near the wall.

Kael almost smiled.

”After that, anyone against whom we have no evidence is free to go.”

Davin stared.

”Go where?”

Kael did not pretend that part was easy.

”That is your decision.”

Mara raised an eyebrow.

”No recruitment speech?”

”No.”

”Convenient moment for one.”

”Yes.”

Kael looked around the room.

”That is exactly why I am not giving it.”

Rask’s expression changed.

Small.

Approval, maybe.

Kael continued. ”Blackwood will not turn Theron’s death into a way to collect his people.”

The sentence settled heavily.

One of the wounded men looked toward him.

”What if somebody wants to stay?”

”Then later we discuss what that means.”

”Guild?”

”Possibly.”

”House?”

”Possibly.”

”Vanguard?”

Rask answered that one.

”No.”

Everyone looked toward him.

He stared at his hands.

”The Iron Vanguard ended today.”

Davin’s face hardened.

”You do not get to decide that alone.”

”No.”

Rask looked up.

”That is why I am saying it here.”

Mara watched him carefully.

Rask continued. ”If ten of you walk out tomorrow and decide to use the name again, I cannot stop you.”

He glanced toward Kael.

”Apparently that is something I am supposed to value now.”

Kael said nothing.

Rask looked back at the others.

”But I will not be part of it.”

Davin leaned back.

”Because Theron lost his mind?”

Rask shook his head.

”Because I spent fifteen years telling myself loyalty meant standing beside the man who gave me somewhere to stand.”

His voice grew rougher.

”Yesterday I learned loyalty also means knowing when standing beside someone helps them become worse.”

Nobody interrupted.

Rask looked toward Theron’s former people.

”I failed him at that long before the core.”

The room went still.

Mara unfolded her arms fully.

”That is too easy.”

Rask looked toward her.

She pushed off the wall.

”You are not taking all of it.”

Rask frowned.

Mara continued. ”You knew things were wrong.”

”Yes.”

”So did I.”

Davin looked down.

Eron too.

Mara’s voice hardened. ”We all learned how not to ask questions when the answer might cost us the place Theron gave us.”

That landed differently.

Not confession of direct guilt.

Something uglier in a quieter way.

Dependence.

The fear of losing belonging.

Kael thought about institutions again.

Theron had hated nobles because power could make people afraid to speak.

Then built something where people became afraid to speak because they owed him everything.

Nobody had planned that contradiction.

That made it worse.

Rask looked toward Mara.

”What do we do with that?”

She shrugged.

”Start by not lying about it.”

Galahad appeared in the doorway.

He had somehow acquired a fresh shoulder wrap and the expression of a man who had been awake too long to care whether anyone liked him.

”That is tomorrow’s problem.”

Mara looked offended.

”We are having a meaningful conversation.”

”Terrible timing.”

Galahad looked at Kael.

”Darius is awake.”

Kael stood too quickly.

His ribs reminded him of the mistake.

Galahad noticed.

”Wonderful. Two patients who hate chairs.”

”I was sitting.”

”You stopped.”

Kael ignored him.

Rask looked toward the door.

”The Shield?”

”Alive.”

”Good.”

Galahad started to leave.

Then looked back toward the Vanguard room.

”One thing.”

Everyone waited.

”You do not need to decide the rest of your lives tonight.”

Mara raised an eyebrow.

”That sounds suspiciously sensible.”

”I have moments.”

Then he left.

Kael followed.

Darius had been given one of the station’s small private rooms because the healer responsible for him had apparently decided privacy made it easier to threaten an Imperial Shield without witnesses.

He was awake.

Barely.

Bandages covered his chest beneath an open linen shirt. His injured shoulder had been immobilized. The thigh wound had been cleaned and tightly wrapped. One side of his face had darkened with bruising from Theron’s strikes.

He still looked irritated by the concept of being in bed.

Kael entered.

Darius looked toward him.

”You took too long.”

Kael closed the door.

”I was dealing with adults.”

”That sounds unlikely.”

Kael stared.

Darius’s mouth moved faintly.

There.

Still alive enough to be unpleasant.

Kael dragged the room’s only chair closer and sat.

The healer near the window pointed toward him.

”Good.”

Kael frowned.

”What?”

”You sat willingly.”

Darius looked at her.

”You see what I endure.”

She looked back.

”You almost died twice after I told you to stay in a wagon.”

Darius said nothing.

Kael smiled.

”Three times.”

Darius looked toward him.

”You are not helping.”

”No.”

The healer checked the bandage along Darius’s shoulder, made certain the water cup near the bed was full, then looked between both men.

”Ten minutes.”

Kael frowned.

Darius frowned.

She raised one eyebrow.

”Eight.”

Kael immediately stopped objecting.

Darius waited until the door closed behind her.

Then he said, ”Your mother.”

Kael’s amusement disappeared.

Darius looked toward the ceiling for several seconds before continuing.

”I served as her bodyguard.”

”I know.”

”You know the title.”

Kael remained silent.

Darius turned his head.

”That is not the same as knowing what I saw.”

Kael leaned back slightly.

Darius continued. ”What appeared on that road was not ordinary Ice magic.”

”I figured that out.”

”It was not one of your techniques. It was not a spell construct. And it did not come from your remaining mana.”

”The System said the same.”

Darius’s eyes narrowed.

”What exactly?”

”That it could not fully attribute the source to me.”

Darius absorbed that.

Then nodded once.

”That fits.”

”With what?”

He took a slow breath.

”Your mother possessed something I knew as an Ice Spirit.”

Kael waited.

The words sounded simple.

The meaning did not.

”What is an Ice Spirit?”

Darius looked irritated.

Not at Kael.

At the question.

”More complicated than I can explain properly tonight.”

Kael said nothing.

Darius recognized the look.

”That is not avoidance.”

”It sounds like avoidance.”

”It is triage.”

Kael almost objected.

Then remembered the healer.

Fine.

Darius continued. ”A spirit is not simply an elemental spell given shape. It has its own existence.”

Kael’s attention sharpened.

”Independent?”

”To some degree.”

”How much?”

”I do not know.”

”You guarded someone who had one.”

”Yes.”

”And you do not know?”

Darius gave him a flat look.

”Bodyguards are not automatically magical scholars.”

Fair.

Kael waited.

Darius went on. ”Your mother’s Spirit manifested through Ice. Sometimes as presence. Sometimes more clearly.”

”Like the woman I saw?”

Darius hesitated.

”I recognized the nature.”

Kael’s chest tightened.

”Not the spirit.”

”No.”

”So you do not know whether it was hers.”

”No.”

”Could it be?”

”I do not know.”

Kael rubbed his thumb against the edge of the chair.

One honest answer after another.

Annoying.

Better.

”Then why did you say I should not have one?”

Darius became still.

There.

The question he had delayed.

”When I knew your mother, everything I understood about that bond said it should not pass to you.”

”Why?”

”Because you are her son.”

Kael frowned.

”That explains nothing.”

Darius closed his eyes briefly.

”The manifestation in her bloodline was believed to pass through the women.”

Kael stared.

”Only women?”

”As far as I knew.”

”Believed?”

”Yes.”

”That is not the same as impossible.”

”No.”

Darius opened his eyes again.

”That is why I corrected myself.”

Kael remembered.

But you should not have one.

Not cannot.

Should not.

Darius continued. ”I never knew a male bearer. I was never told there had been one. I had every reason to believe whatever connection created that Spirit would not manifest through a son.”

Kael looked toward his hands.

The fingers that had been spread across freezing stone when the woman appeared.

Nothing.

No cold.

No presence.

No whisper.

”You knew I had Ice.”

”Yes.”

”And never thought this possible?”

”No.”

The answer came too quickly to doubt.

Kael looked up.

”Did my mother?”

Darius did not answer.

Kael’s stomach tightened.

”You know.”

”No.”

”You paused.”

”I paused because I knew you would ask.”

Kael stared.

Darius continued. ”I do not know whether she believed you could inherit anything related to the Spirit.”

”Did she ever talk about it?”

”Not in a way that answers this.”

There it was again.

A boundary.

Kael could push.

Darius was injured enough that he might eventually give him something just to end the conversation.

Kael refused.

Theron’s last lesson had become inconvenient quickly.

He changed the question.

”Did the Spirit protect her?”

Darius’s eyes shifted.

”Yes.”

”Like mine protected me?”

A longer pause.

”Similar.”

Not identical.

Kael caught that.

”How different?”

Darius looked tired suddenly.

Not physically.

Older.

”Kael.”

The use of his name again.

Kael stopped.

Darius’s voice lowered.

”There are things about your mother I will tell you.”

Kael waited.

”There are also things I may remember incorrectly because I saw them as a soldier standing beside her, not as the person carrying the bond.”

He looked toward Kael.

”I will not turn what I do not know into certainty because you want answers tonight.”

Kael leaned back.

He hated how reasonable everyone had become.

”Fine.”

Darius almost smiled.

”Good.”

Kael frowned.

”Do not start that.”

The smile became slightly more visible.

Then Darius winced because apparently even smiling pulled somewhere painful.

Kael’s amusement vanished.

”Your Awakening.”

Darius looked down at his hand.

”What about it?”

”You almost killed yourself maintaining it.”

”That seems dramatic.”

”The healer said your Aura use was interfering with your body’s attempt to stabilize.”

Darius looked toward the door.

”She talks too much.”

”She is excellent.”

”I did not say otherwise.”

Kael leaned forward.

”Unbroken Battlefield.”

Darius was quiet.

”You named it quickly.”

”I did not name it today.”

Kael blinked.

Darius looked toward him.

”The name existed before the Awakening.”

That surprised him.

”You expected this?”

”No.”

”Then why the name?”

Darius’s good hand shifted slightly against the blanket.

”The Unbroken Sword was never about the weapon.”

Kael remembered the road.

Darius bare-handed.

Theron telling him he had nothing.

Darius saying he had less.

”The battlefield was always there,” Kael said.

Darius looked at him.

”Yes.”

That was all.

It was enough.

Someone knocked.

The healer opened the door before either man invited her.

”Time.”

Kael stood.

Darius looked toward him.

”One more thing.”

The healer sighed loudly.

Darius ignored her.

”Do not try to summon it.”

Kael stopped.

”The Spirit.”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”Because you do not know what you are doing.”

”That has not stopped me before.”

Darius stared.

Kael conceded.

”Fair.”

Darius continued. ”It appeared when you were about to die. That does not mean repeating the circumstances is training.”

Kael pictured Theron’s palm inches from his face.

He had not planned on repeating that.

Probably.

”What if it appears again?”

”Observe.”

”That is your advice?”

”Yes.”

”Observe.”

”Yes.”

Kael shook his head.

”You are becoming Iris.”

Darius looked mildly offended.

The healer pointed toward the door.

Kael left.

The station had quieted by the time he returned to the main corridor.

Not silent.

Never silent.

People coughed behind doors. Healers moved between rooms. A guard changed position near the entrance. Someone outside scraped ash from stone. A horse stamped in the stable.

Ordinary sounds.

After the Caldera, ordinary sounded precious.

Kael found Sera sitting on the station steps beneath the covered porch.

Her bow lay across her knees.

Still unstrung.

She held a replacement cord in both hands.

Had not attached it.

Kael sat beside her.

She looked over.

”You are supposed to be resting.”

”So are you.”

”I was here first.”

Fair.

For a while neither spoke.

Then Kael looked at the bow.

”You fixing it?”

”Eventually.”

”Problem?”

Sera ran the replacement string between her fingers.

”No.”

Kael waited.

She sighed.

”I reached for the old one twice.”

He understood.

The bow had broken at the end of a fight where she had discovered the weapon no longer represented the boundary of what she could do.

That did not mean losing it felt easy.

Sera looked toward the dark road.

”When my quiver emptied, I thought I was useless.”

”You were not.”

”I know that now.”

She looked at the string.

”That does not mean I suddenly hate arrows.”

Kael smiled faintly.

”I would be concerned if you did.”

Sera tied one end of the replacement cord.

”Mana Weaving is not a replacement.”

”No.”

”It is another option.”

Kael thought about Darius.

The Unbroken Sword.

Then the Unbroken Battlefield.

Not replacement.

Expansion.

”Yes.”

Sera began stringing the bow.

Her hands trembled.

Not much.

Enough.

She stopped.

Kael did not offer to help.

After several breaths, Sera tried again.

This time the loop seated.

She tested the tension.

The bow remained intact.

Sera exhaled.

Then looked toward him.

”What happened on the road?”

Kael knew exactly what she meant.

”You saw?”

”I saw cold.”

”Not her?”

Sera frowned.

”Her?”

Interesting.

Kael looked toward the yard.

”Later.”

Sera stared at him.

”That is a terrible answer.”

”I learned it from Darius.”

”That explains it.”

She stood.

Bow restrung.

No arrows.

Mana depleted.

Still more complete than she had been that morning.

Kael watched her go inside.

The station door opened again before it closed fully.

Milo emerged wearing a blanket around his shoulders like an offended king.

Kael stared.

”You are supposed to be unconscious.”

Milo looked toward him.

”I received similar criticism.”

”Go back inside.”

”No.”

Sera turned in the hallway.

”Yes.”

Milo looked betrayed.

”I came outside for air.”

”You can have air near the window.”

”That is indoor air.”

Sera pointed.

Milo sighed.

Then noticed the bow.

His expression changed.

”You restrung it.”

”Yes.”

”Good.”

Sera stared.

”That is all?”

Milo looked genuinely confused.

”What did you want? A speech?”

”No.”

”Excellent.”

He turned toward Kael.

”Did we win?”

Kael thought about Theron.

The dead.

The rescued.

The Caldera.

The core in the iron box.

The feminine figure of ice.

”No.”

Milo blinked.

Kael continued.

”We finished.”

Milo considered that.

Then nodded.

”Better answer.”

Sera grabbed the back of his blanket.

”Inside.”

”I can walk.”

”You can complain while walking.”

”That is one of my strengths.”

They disappeared.

Kael remained on the steps.

For several minutes, he listened to the road station breathe.

Then Galahad came outside carrying two cups.

He handed one to Kael.

Water.

Kael drank.

Galahad sat beside him.

”We leave after sunrise.”

”Everyone?”

”Everyone capable of travel.”

”And the ones who are not?”

”Rolan leaves a small medical guard until they can move.”

Kael nodded.

”Blackwood?”

Galahad looked toward him.

”Unless you have discovered another mountain you want to enter.”

”No.”

”Good.”

Kael stared east.

Beyond the darkness lay Westbrook.

Then the Blackwood roads.

Villages.

The Guild.

The manor.

Home.

The word arrived strangely.

Home.

He had spent so long thinking of Blackwood as territory, responsibility, project, House, problem, opportunity, obligation.

Somewhere along the way it had become the place he expected to return to.

Galahad drank from his cup.

”You know tomorrow will be worse in a different way.”

Kael looked at him.

”Reports.”

”Reports.”

”Families.”

”Yes.”

”Burials.”

”Yes.”

”Guild questions.”

”Yes.”

”Why an A-rank mission became this.”

”Yes.”

Kael sighed.

Galahad smiled faintly.

”Miss the Ash-King yet?”

”No.”

”Good.”

They sat a little longer.

Behind them were people who had survived.

Ahead of them were people waiting to learn who had not.

Neither part would be easy.

But the difference mattered.

Kael had gone into the western forest because people disappeared and someone had to find out why.

He had found an organization hiding dangerous work, a monster powerful enough to empty routes around it, a commander who wanted strength badly enough to let it consume him, and several truths about himself he had not known existed.

Tomorrow he would return to Blackwood carrying all of it.

The dead.

The living.

The Draconic Core.

Darius’s new Awakening.

Sera’s Mana Weaving.

Rask and the remains of the Iron Vanguard.

Questions about Joren.

Questions about Rellan.

Questions about Veyra’s teacher.

And one impossible memory of a woman made of ice standing between Kael and death.

For once, Kael did not try to solve any of them before sleeping.

He finished the water.

Stood carefully.

Then went inside.

At dawn, House Kael’s wagons turned east.

And this time, they were going home.
