The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

The warning from Kael’s System changed the entire shape of the withdrawal.

[DIRECTIONAL WARNING]

Additional humanoid movement detected

Estimated count: 8–14

Direction: deeper route

Movement pattern: rapid

Kael looked down the corridor they had just come from. The approaching group remained beyond sight, hidden by two bends and layers of worked volcanic stone, but the vibrations of boots were beginning to reach them now. Whoever was coming was not wandering through the lower works. They were moving with purpose.

”Maybe ten,” Kael said. ”Could be more.”

Galahad’s eyes swept across the narrow passage, the five defeated men, Lysa’s improvised litter, and the route back toward the cistern. He did not waste time pretending they could take everything with them. ”Weapons away from them. Bind hands. We are not carrying prisoners.”

The man Iris had pinned beneath her knife gave a short laugh. ”Leaving us here?”

Galahad crouched long enough to remove the man’s sword belt himself. ”You attacked a Guild search party while we were carrying an injured captive out of a locked room. You are fortunate ’leaving you here’ is still one of the options.”

The man’s expression hardened, but he did not answer.

Darius collected the weapons while Iris used restraint cord from her pack to bind the conscious prisoners. She did not tie them helplessly. Their hands were secured in front rather than behind, and she left enough movement that they could stand or move away if something dangerous reached the corridor.

Kael noticed.

”You’re leaving them able to run.”

Iris tightened the final knot. ”There are people coming from that direction. I don’t know if they’re coming to help them.”

The captive nearest her looked at the corridor.

That tiny reaction mattered.

Fear.

Not relief.

Galahad saw it too.

”Who is coming?”

The man said nothing.

The footsteps grew louder.

Darius took the front of Lysa’s litter while Galahad moved toward the rear. Kael immediately stepped forward.

”I can carry.”

Galahad looked at his shoulder.

”You can fight.”

”So can you.”

”My job is making the decisions.”

”And carrying prevents that?”

Galahad stared at him for half a second, then looked toward Iris.

She had already finished with the prisoners.

”You take rear,” Galahad told her.

Iris nodded.

Kael took the back of the litter.

Lysa looked between him and Darius. ”You don’t have to—”

”Yes,” Kael said.

She frowned.

”That was fast.”

”So are the people behind us.”

That ended the argument.

They moved.

The first turn came quickly, but the litter slowed them more than Kael expected. Lysa was light after whatever she had endured, yet the improvised frame had never been designed for speed. The two wooden boards flexed each time Kael and Darius changed elevation, and the leather straps shifted whenever the corridor narrowed.

Iris moved ahead now, retracing the route toward the cistern while Galahad stayed close enough to see both her and the litter.

Behind them, someone shouted.

Not close enough to understand.

Then another voice answered.

The prisoners.

Maybe.

Kael did not look back.

The System did.

[DIRECTIONAL SCAN]

Humanoid movement behind: increasing

Multiple stationary signatures remain at previous location

Pursuing signatures: 9 confirmed

There.

Nine.

”Galahad. Nine moving after us.”

”Distance?”

Kael focused.

Estimated: 120–160 paces

”Maybe a hundred fifty paces.”

Galahad looked toward Iris. ”Fastest clean route?”

”The way we came.”

”Alternative?”

”Unknown.”

Darius adjusted his grip. ”Then we use what we know.”

Good.

No sudden secret passage because they needed one.

No brilliant detour built from nothing.

They had a route.

They had to make it work.

The first obstacle came less than two minutes later.

A fresh crack ran across the corridor.

It had not been there before.

Iris stopped so suddenly Galahad nearly collided with her.

”New.”

Kael lowered his end of the litter carefully while Darius did the same.

The crack was not wide. Perhaps six inches at the largest point. The danger was what lay beneath it.

The System reacted.

[Structural Analysis]

New fracture detected

Subsurface void: shallow near right wall / deepening left

Load-bearing stability: reduced

Recommendation: cross individually near right wall

Kael pointed. ”Right side. One person at a time.”

Galahad looked toward the litter.

”That isn’t one person.”

”No.”

Darius examined the floor.

”Can it take the weight if we move quickly?”

The System could not answer cleanly.

[Confidence: moderate-low]

Kael hated that.

”I don’t know.”

Lysa looked at the fracture.

”Put me down.”

Kael looked toward her.

”I can crawl.”

”No,” Darius said.

She stared at him.

Darius continued, ”Your ankle is damaged, your wrists are injured, and you have been confined long enough that your strength is unreliable.”

Lysa’s jaw tightened. ”And four people are moving slower because of me.”

”Nine,” Kael corrected.

She looked at him.

”That did not help.”

Milo would have appreciated that.

Kael almost smiled.

Then Galahad made the decision. ”We reduce the litter load.”

He removed his pack and tossed it across first. Iris caught it. Darius handed over part of his equipment next, including the heavier pieces he did not need for immediate combat. Kael did the same with his pack.

The footsteps behind them became audible.

Not words yet.

Boots.

Metal.

Closer.

Galahad crossed.

Iris tested the right side.

Stable.

Darius looked toward Kael. ”Together.”

They lifted Lysa.

Not the litter.

Lysa’s eyes widened.

”What are you doing?”

”Making you lighter than the wood,” Kael said.

Darius took her beneath the shoulders. Kael supported her legs carefully above the injured ankle.

They crossed the fracture in four quick steps.

The floor shifted beneath Kael’s final boot.

A section of stone dropped on the left side.

Lysa gasped.

Kael nearly lost his footing.

Iris caught his sleeve and pulled.

They cleared.

The crack widened behind them.

Galahad looked back.

”That helps.”

Kael nodded.

”For us.”

It would slow the pursuers.

Not stop them.

They rebuilt the litter on the far side and kept moving.

Lysa remained quiet for perhaps a minute.

Then: ”You really are a prince?”

Kael looked toward her from the rear of the litter.

”Yes.”

”You carry people often?”

”No.”

”That makes more sense.”

Darius almost smiled.

Kael looked toward the commander. ”You are enjoying this.”

”I have carried wounded soldiers across worse terrain.”

”That was not what I asked.”

Darius said nothing.

Lysa’s mouth moved faintly.

For the first time, Kael realized she was smiling.

Then the corridor trembled.

The smile vanished.

Dust fell.

The System opened.

[Environmental Alert]

Geothermal vibration increasing

Localized structural movement detected ahead

No immediate collapse

The floor did not fail.

But something else changed.

Heat.

The passage ahead grew warmer.

Iris stopped at the next junction.

Kael recognized it.

The blue cloth fragment had been found near the left route earlier.

The cistern was straight.

Except the straight passage no longer looked the same.

A section of ceiling had come down.

Not completely.

Enough to reduce the route to a narrow opening.

Galahad stared.

”When?”

Iris crouched.

”Very recent.”

Kael focused.

[Structural Analysis]

Partial ceiling failure

Main corridor width reduced

Remaining passage: approximately 28 inches at narrowest point

Litter passage: impossible without disassembly

Behind them, the pursuers crossed the fracture.

Kael knew because the System showed the heat signatures bunching, slowing, then spreading again.

”They’re still coming.”

Galahad looked at the opening.

”How long to take the litter apart?”

Iris answered. ”Too long.”

Lysa spoke quietly. ”Then leave it.”

Nobody answered immediately.

She looked toward Kael.

”I mean the litter.”

Kael realized.

Lysa continued, ”You carry me through.”

Darius looked toward the narrow gap.

Possible.

Barely.

Galahad nodded. ”Do it.”

They abandoned the improvised litter.

Not carelessly.

Iris cut the useful straps free first and wrapped them around her pack. Galahad took the blanket. Everything that might matter later stayed with them.

Darius lifted Lysa.

She stiffened immediately.

”Easy,” he said.

”I am fine.”

”You are shaking.”

”I said I’m fine.”

Darius looked toward Kael.

Kael shrugged.

Darius stepped toward the gap.

Lysa frowned. ”What?”

”Nothing.”

”You looked at him.”

”He is easier to argue with.”

Kael stared at him.

Galahad actually laughed.

Once.

Then Darius turned sideways and entered the opening with Lysa held securely against his chest.

It was tight.

His armor scraped stone.

Kael followed behind.

Iris went first to clear the far side.

Galahad came last.

Halfway through, a voice reached them from behind.

”Stop!”

Nobody stopped.

The voice was clearer now.

”Guild!”

Galahad looked back through the narrow passage.

The pursuers had reached the partial collapse.

A lantern appeared.

Then an armored figure.

No visible face yet.

”Stop!”

Galahad answered.

”Why?”

A pause.

Then: ”The cistern route is compromised.”

Everyone froze.

Not because they trusted the warning.

Because the man had named their destination.

Galahad remained inside the gap. ”How?”

”East line breached.”

”By what?”

No answer.

Galahad’s expression changed.

”Then we keep moving.”

The voice sharpened. ”You will walk her straight into it.”

Lysa’s breathing changed.

Kael looked toward her in Darius’s arms.

She whispered, ”Don’t listen.”

Galahad heard.

He backed farther into the gap.

The man behind them shouted, ”She has been exposed!”

There it was again.

The same claim.

Darius continued moving.

Galahad stopped one last time.

”Exposed to what?”

Silence.

The answer, when it came, was quieter.

”You don’t know what they were doing below.”

Galahad stared through the narrow opening.

”No.”

”Then give her back.”

Lysa shut her eyes.

Kael felt anger rise immediately.

Galahad’s voice became cold.

”You had a chance to explain.”

The man said nothing.

”You chose ’give her back.’”

Then Galahad crawled through.

They left the voice behind.

The partial collapse slowed pursuit more effectively than the fracture had. Darius could barely fit with Lysa. Several armored people would have to remove equipment or clear more stone before following.

That bought time.

Not safety.

Iris led them through the final worked corridor.

Kael recognized the gradual cooling.

The stronger airflow.

The faint smell of water.

Cistern.

Close.

The System updated.

[Route Recognition]

Known location approaching

Estimated distance: 240 paces

”Four minutes,” Kael said.

Galahad glanced back. ”At our pace?”

”Maybe five.”

”Take five.”

No one pushed harder.

That was another lesson the mission kept teaching them.

Exhausted people sprinting through unstable tunnels created more problems than they solved.

Darius carried Lysa without complaint.

But Kael noticed his breathing.

The commander’s ribs.

His earlier injuries.

The strain was adding up.

”Let me take her.”

”No.”

”Darius.”

”No.”

Lysa looked between them.

”I am beginning to understand why none of you listen to each other.”

Galahad answered from ahead.

”We listen.”

Kael said, ”Then ignore the useful part.”

That earned another tiny smile from Lysa.

Then the System flashed.

[DIRECTIONAL WARNING]

Kael stopped.

Darius stopped with him.

”Movement ahead.”

Iris turned immediately.

”How many?”

Kael focused.

One.

Then two.

No.

Three heat sources.

Humanoid.

Coming toward them.

Galahad drew his sword.

Darius lowered Lysa carefully into Kael’s arms.

This time Kael did not argue.

The passage was too narrow for Darius to fight while carrying her.

Kael backed against the wall with Lysa supported beside him.

Iris disappeared ten paces forward.

Not more.

Then returned almost immediately.

”Friendly.”

Galahad did not lower his weapon yet.

”Who?”

”Extraction workers.”

Three figures appeared around the bend.

One was the original route worker who had helped carry Derren.

The second was one of the lower-camp workers.

The third wore the Iron Vanguard insignia.

All three looked exhausted.

The original worker saw Kael’s group.

Relief crossed his face.

Then he saw Lysa.

His eyes widened.

”You found her.”

Galahad nodded.

”Why are you coming back?”

The relief disappeared.

The worker looked toward the cistern.

”Sera sent us.”

Every muscle in Galahad’s posture tightened.

”Why?”

”The upper route changed.”

Milo would have hated that phrase.

Kael did too.

”What happened?”

”Collapse farther east. Not complete. The litters got through.”

”Everyone alive?”

”Yes.”

Good.

That came first.

Galahad asked, ”Then why are you here?”

The worker looked toward the armored man beside him.

”He can explain.”

The man with the iron insignia stepped forward.

”The junction isn’t secure.”

Darius’s sword remained in his hand.

”Threat?”

”Not yet.”

”Then what?”

”People.”

Galahad frowned.

”How many?”

”More than twenty.”

Kael’s grip tightened around Lysa.

”Armed?”

”Most.”

”Your people?”

The man looked uncomfortable.

”Some.”

Galahad’s eyes narrowed.

”Some?”

”Different crews came up from below after you separated.”

”Why?”

”We don’t know.”

”You ask very few questions.”

The man’s jaw tightened. ”We asked.”

”And?”

”They said the drainage route is closed.”

Sera’s warning signal had not been sent.

Not yet.

That meant she had not classified it as immediate danger.

But twenty armed people blocking the route ahead while Kael’s group was being pursued from behind changed everything.

Galahad looked toward the cistern.

”How far did the wounded get?”

”First junction. They stopped there like you ordered.”

”Good.”

The worker continued, ”Milo wanted to come back.”

Kael almost smiled.

”Of course.”

”Sera threatened to shoot him.”

That sounded correct.

Even Darius gave a faint nod.

Galahad looked at the three messengers. ”Why didn’t you use the pipe signal?”

The worker hesitated.

”The pipe stopped carrying sound.”

Iris frowned.

”Broken?”

”Maybe.”

Kael looked toward the walls.

Another piece of infrastructure failing.

Or being altered.

Not enough information.

The System provided only what it could.

[Environmental Scan]

Vibration interference elevated

Metallic resonance pathways disrupted

Specific cause: unresolved

Galahad exhaled slowly.

Ahead:

Sera.

Milo.

Two healers.

Derren.

Tovin.

Multiple walking wounded.

More than twenty armed people somewhere near their route.

Behind:

Nine pursuers.

And Kael’s search team had just added Lysa, who could not walk.

This was not a clean extraction anymore.

Galahad looked toward Darius.

”Options.”

Darius answered immediately. ”Reach the cistern. Reunite. Assess.”

”Agreed.”

No fighting toward assumptions.

No choosing enemies before they understood positions.

They moved.

The final stretch passed without another obstruction.

When the cistern opened ahead, Kael felt relief until he saw how empty it was.

The wounded column had left.

Of course.

They were at the first eastern junction, exactly where Galahad had ordered them to stop.

The cistern contained only abandoned cloth, an empty jar, and the marks Iris had left on the wall.

Galahad pointed toward the eastern drainage.

”We continue.”

Then the System flashed.

[DIRECTIONAL SCAN]

Kael froze.

Movement.

Behind them again.

The nine pursuers had cleared the collapse.

Ahead, farther through the eastern drainage, the System detected a dense cluster of humanoid heat signatures.

Too many to resolve precisely.

Kael looked at Galahad.

”People behind us.”

”How close?”

”Maybe five minutes.”

”And ahead?”

Kael focused.

The geothermal noise interfered badly.

[Humanoid heat signatures: numerous]

Estimated count: 20+

”More than twenty.”

The Iron Vanguard messenger swore.

Galahad stood in the center of the cistern and looked from one passage to the other.

No panic appeared on his face.

But Kael saw the change.

The calculation had become ugly.

Lysa whispered from beside him, ”They’re closing us in.”

Maybe.

Maybe not.

Kael refused to make that leap yet.

Then a metallic sound traveled faintly through the eastern passage.

One strike.

Pause.

Another.

Then continuous ringing.

Not three.

Not the clear signal.

The danger signal.

Everyone in the cistern went still.

Galahad drew his sword fully.

”Now we move.”
