The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

The wounded had barely cleared the Westbrook gate before Rask told Kael they could not keep going east.

Kael had one boot on the mounting block beside Tovin’s wagon when the words reached him. The Westbrook yard had become controlled chaos around them: House guards clearing space, healers arguing over which wagon had the smoother suspension, stable hands bringing fresh horses, villagers being pushed gently but firmly away from the treatment area, and Captain Rolan standing in the middle of it all as though he had been born specifically to turn disorder into lines, assignments, and shouted instructions. Tovin had just been transferred into the covered wagon that would take him farther into Blackwood territory, with Lysa beside him and Derren placed behind them despite three separate complaints about being treated like cargo.

Kael turned toward Rask. ”What?”

Rask had stopped several paces away. Mara stood beside him, while Davin and Eron remained closer to the other Iron Vanguard survivors. Kel was sitting on an overturned grain crate because his ribs had finally defeated his pride, and the expression on his face suggested he blamed the crate personally.

Rask looked past Kael toward the road leading east.

”You can send them home.” His voice was low enough that the villagers could not hear. ”You can send the wounded, the workers, anyone who can’t keep moving. But if all of us go with them, there are people who won’t be alive when we come back.”

Kael stared at him.

For one breath, exhaustion vanished.

Galahad heard enough to approach from the other side of the wagon. His limp remained visible despite the night’s rest, though calling what any of them had gotten at the charcoal camp rest felt generous. Darius came behind him, one hand near the sword at his side, while Iris stopped several yards away and simply listened.

Sera was already looking at Rask.

Milo remained seated against the rear wheel of a supply cart, eyes half closed until Rask spoke.

Now they were completely open.

Kael stepped down from the mounting block.

”How many?”

Rask’s jaw tightened.

”I don’t know.”

”That isn’t good enough.”

”I know.”

Kael moved closer. ”Then start with what you do know.”

Rask looked at Mara.

That irritated Kael immediately.

”You had hours to tell us.”

”I didn’t have all of it.”

”You had enough to know there were more people.”

Rask’s expression hardened. ”I knew there were teams deeper in the Caldera when everything started going wrong. I didn’t know who had made it where. My group was split. Communications were gone. Routes collapsed. Half the people I was trying to find were scattered across the mountain.”

”And now?”

”Now I have Davin and Eron back. Mara knows which lower routes were still being used. The people we found above had reports I didn’t.”

Mara folded her arms tightly across herself.

”There are people below.”

No uncertainty.

No maybe.

Kael looked at her.

”How many?”

”I don’t know exactly.”

Kael almost snapped.

Mara continued before he could.

”Because I wasn’t in charge of personnel records, Prince. I moved equipment, supplies, structural material, carts, tools, whatever people above decided needed moving. Teams changed shifts without telling me. Some lower crews came through entrances I never used.”

She pointed west.

”But I know those levels weren’t empty when we ran.”

Galahad’s face had gone very still.

”Ran from what?”

Mara looked at Rask again.

Rask answered this time.

”The Ash-King.”

The name meant nothing to Kael.

That made it worse.

Milo pushed himself upright against the wheel. ”That sounds unpleasant.”

Nobody laughed.

Kael looked from Rask to Mara.

”What is the Ash-King?”

Rask breathed through his nose.

”A draconic beast.”

Darius spoke immediately. ”Drake?”

”No.”

That single answer changed the air around them.

Iris came closer.

”Dragon?”

Rask shook his head. ”I don’t know what scholars would call it. I know what the people working the inner Caldera call it.”

”The Ash-King,” Kael said.

”Yes.”

Rask looked west again.

”Much larger than the drakes. Older too, if the old scale growth means what people think it means. It lives deeper inside the volcanic range. Most drakes won’t go near its territory unless something forces them.”

Sera’s hand settled near her quiver.

Nine usable arrows.

One cracked emergency shaft.

Kael knew the number without looking.

Iris asked, ”And you waited until now to tell us?”

Rask’s expression sharpened. ”You think I was hiding a pet monster?”

”I think information that explains why mature drakes are running toward inhabited territory would have been useful.”

”So did I, once I knew that was what they were doing.”

Iris did not blink.

Rask continued, more controlled now.

”We knew drakes were becoming restless around the inner Caldera. We knew the Ash-King had started ranging farther from its normal territory. We did not know those animals were running all the way toward your roads until we were already trying not to die beside you.”

Mara spoke quietly.

”The lower teams knew more.”

Everyone looked at her.

She swallowed once.

”Theron knew more.”

Kael recognized the name.

Theron Vance.

The Iron Wall.

Leader of the Iron Vanguard.

The name had appeared in Guild reports and intelligence long before Kael met any of the people standing in front of him.

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

”Vance is down there.”

Rask nodded.

”He was when the routes broke.”

”And you know he is still alive?”

”I know he was alive after we lost the upper line.”

”That was days ago.”

”Yes.”

”Then you don’t know.”

Rask’s mouth tightened.

”No.”

Mara spoke before the argument could continue.

”There are signal points.”

Galahad looked at her.

”What kind?”

”Mechanical. Not mana.”

That got Kael’s attention immediately.

Mara pointed west.

”Old mine communication lines. Bells, strike plates, weighted cables. Some parts don’t work anymore. Some do. The lower crews used them because mana communication became unreliable deeper inside.”

Kael remembered the sound from the night before.

The deep metallic tone.

”Last night.”

Mara looked at him.

”Yes.”

Rask turned sharply. ”What?”

”The bell we heard.”

Mara’s face changed.

She had heard it too.

Everyone had.

But until now it had been only another unexplained sound.

Kael continued.

”Could that have been one of these signals?”

Mara hesitated.

”Maybe.”

Darius cut in before the word could become certainty. ”Maybe is not yes.”

”No.” Mara shook her head. ”It isn’t.”

She looked toward the western road.

”But the deepest signal plate is larger than the charcoal bells. Much larger. You don’t ring it casually because everyone connected to the lower passages hears it.”

Galahad’s stare hardened.

”What does the signal mean?”

Mara looked at Rask.

He answered.

”Emergency assembly.”

Silence followed.

Milo rubbed both hands over his face.

”Of course it does.”

This time nobody corrected him.

Kael turned toward Captain Rolan.

The captain had been speaking with the healer near Tovin’s wagon, but he had noticed the gathering. He handed whatever orders he was giving to the station sergeant and walked toward them.

”What?”

Kael pointed toward the eastern convoy.

”You take the wounded home.”

Rolan stopped.

”No.”

Kael stared.

Rolan’s expression did not change.

”You have not explained anything, so currently the answer is no.”

Rask muttered, ”I like him.”

Rolan ignored him.

Kael spoke more carefully.

”There are still people below the Caldera. Vance is apparently down there with them, or was when contact was lost. The disturbance we heard last night may have been an emergency signal from the lower works.”

Rolan’s eyes moved to Rask.

”Apparently?”

Rask met his gaze.

”We don’t know what survived.”

Rolan looked toward Mara.

She nodded.

”People were still below when the routes failed.”

Rolan returned his attention to Kael.

”So your plan is?”

”Finish the mission.”

”That is not a plan.”

Galahad almost smiled.

Kael noticed.

”Do not encourage him.”

”I didn’t say anything.”

”You thought it.”

Galahad shrugged.

Rolan waited.

Kael exhaled.

”The wounded continue east under your command. Tovin needs Blackwood’s low-mana treatment room. Derren, Lysa, Kel, Harven, and anyone else who cannot safely continue goes with you. You notify Edwin, keep the western road closed, establish a relay between Blackwood, Westbrook, and the charcoal camp, and prepare extraction support.”

Rolan listened without interrupting now.

Kael continued.

”No more Black Dragons come out.”

Darius looked at him.

Kael met his eyes.

”We already have the people this mission started with. I am not emptying Blackwood because the problem got larger.”

Rolan’s gaze moved over the existing party.

Galahad.

Darius.

Iris.

Sera.

Milo.

Then Kael.

”You are all injured.”

”Yes.”

”Milo looks dead.”

Milo raised one hand from beside the wagon. ”Unfair.”

Rolan looked toward him.

Milo lowered it.

Rolan continued.

”Darius’s shoulder needs treatment.”

Darius said, ”Later.”

”Your ribs?”

Kael answered, ”Later.”

”Galahad?”

The Guild leader touched his hip once.

”Functional.”

”Iris?”

”Functional.”

”Sera?”

Sera glanced at her quiver.

”Functional.”

Rolan looked toward Milo.

Milo sighed.

”I dislike where this pattern is going.”

”Functional?”

Milo considered lying.

Sera stared at him.

Milo looked away.

”Technically.”

Rolan’s face hardened.

Galahad stepped in.

”He does not lead casting.”

Milo looked offended.

Galahad ignored him.

”We use him for limited control only unless survival requires more.”

”That was already the plan,” Milo said.

Sera looked at him.

”No, your plan was complaining until someone forgot you were exhausted.”

”It has worked before.”

Kael almost smiled.

Almost.

Rolan looked at the Iron Vanguard survivors.

”Who goes with them?”

Rask answered. ”Me.”

Mara said, ”Me.”

Davin looked toward Eron.

Eron nodded once.

”We both go.”

Kel tried to stand.

Pain hit halfway up.

He sat again.

Nobody commented.

Kel looked furious.

Rask walked over and put a hand on his shoulder.

”No.”

Kel stared at him.

”I know the lower routes.”

”Mara knows them better.”

”I can fight.”

”You can breathe badly.”

Kel’s face twisted.

”Rask.”

”No.”

For the first time since Kael had met him, Rask’s voice broke around the edges.

”You got thrown off a mountain road yesterday.”

”It wasn’t a mountain.”

”Kel.”

That stopped him.

Rask leaned closer.

”I am not carrying you back twice.”

Kel held his gaze.

Then looked away.

”Fine.”

Rask squeezed his shoulder once.

Kael watched.

Fifteen years.

The number Rask had given him beside the stream mattered more now.

Veyra approached from the treatment building.

She had been speaking to one of the healers, though Kael suspected she had heard enough to understand the conversation long before reaching them.

”You’re going back.”

Kael looked at her.

”We’re continuing.”

She studied him.

”That is a better word.”

”Are you coming?”

Veyra’s hand settled briefly over the damaged focus beneath her cloak.

”My teacher went into those routes.”

”That is not an answer.”

”Yes.”

Good.

Captain Rolan looked increasingly unhappy.

Kael understood why.

Rolan had arrived expecting to pull an exhausted prince and damaged expedition out of danger.

Instead, he was being asked to become the man who watched them turn around.

Rolan stepped closer.

”If I take the wounded east, I am responsible for the road.”

”Yes.”

”For Westbrook.”

”Yes.”

”For the charcoal camp.”

”Yes.”

”For making sure you have somewhere to come back to.”

Kael nodded.

”That is exactly what I need you to do.”

Rolan stared at him for a long moment.

Then something in his expression changed.

Not agreement with the decision.

Acceptance of the job.

”Then listen carefully.”

Kael did.

”You do not disappear.”

”I’ll try.”

”That was not humor.”

Kael stopped smiling.

Rolan continued.

”Any functional signal route you find, use it. Any runner who can safely reach the charcoal camp, send them. If the route collapses behind you, do not improvise an entirely new expedition deeper into the mountain because someone says there might be another tunnel.”

Milo whispered, ”Very specific.”

Sera elbowed him.

Rolan pointed toward Galahad.

”You are still mission lead.”

Galahad nodded.

”Yes.”

”If His Highness starts confusing urgency with command—”

Kael frowned.

Galahad answered, ”I’ll stop him.”

Kael looked at him.

”You agreed too quickly.”

”I’ve been waiting months.”

Rolan turned to Darius.

”You know what I am going to say.”

Darius nodded.

”Yes.”

”Then I do not have to say it.”

”No.”

Rolan looked at Sera and Iris.

”Bring them back.”

Iris’s expression remained dry.

”Which ones?”

”All of them.”

”That seems unrealistic.”

Rolan stared.

Iris almost smiled.

”Understood.”

Finally, Rolan looked at Milo.

Milo straightened a little.

Rolan said, ”Do not be heroic.”

Milo’s eyebrows rose.

”Captain, I am offended that you think that was possible.”

Rolan walked away.

Milo waited until he was out of earshot.

”He likes me.”

Sera shook her head.

”He tolerates you.”

”Strong foundation.”

The transfer took less than an hour.

That hour mattered.

Kael did not spend it planning an attack.

He spent it finishing what they had started.

Tovin went east under three healers with the mana-ward warning written twice across his travel report.

Lysa refused to leave his wagon.

Nobody made her.

Derren complained about abandoning the expedition until Galahad told him that surviving one rescue did not qualify him to volunteer for another while unable to stand without help.

Derren called that discriminatory.

Galahad agreed.

Harven went with the wounded because of his broken arm.

Kel went because Rask threatened to personally tie him to the wagon.

That argument lasted long enough that Captain Rolan finally walked over carrying rope.

Kel got into the wagon.

No rope was necessary.

Kael checked Tovin last.

Not because he intended to use Blood again.

Because leaving felt wrong.

Tovin’s eyes opened as Kael approached.

”You’re not coming.”

Kael looked at him.

”How do you know?”

Tovin’s gaze moved beyond him toward the western gate.

”Everyone looks angry.”

”That happens around me.”

A weak smile.

Then Tovin’s expression tightened.

”Joren.”

”Still missing.”

”He might be below.”

”Yes.”

Tovin swallowed.

Kael waited.

”If you find him...”

The sentence stopped.

Kael did not finish it for him.

Tovin breathed slowly through his nose.

”Bring him back.”

Kael was surprised.

Tovin saw it.

”I want answers.”

Not revenge.

Not yet.

Maybe both.

But answers first.

Kael nodded.

”If we can.”

Tovin closed his eyes.

”Better.”

Kael stepped down from the wagon.

Lysa caught his wrist before he could leave.

Her grip was weak.

Her expression was not.

”Rellan.”

Kael looked at her.

”We haven’t forgotten.”

She searched his face.

Kael understood the thing she was really asking.

”If his route becomes reachable, we bring him out.”

Lysa released him.

”Good.”

Kael did not promise what he could not guarantee.

He was learning.

The eastbound convoy left Westbrook under Captain Rolan’s command.

Kael stood beside the western gate and watched until Tovin’s wagon disappeared beyond the road bend.

For a moment, every exhausted part of him wanted to follow.

Hot food.

A bath.

His own bed.

Edwin complaining.

Hugo taking one look at his armor and becoming personally insulted.

Blackwood.

Then Rask spoke from behind him.

”If the lower signal was real, we already lost hours.”

Kael turned west.

”Then stop talking.”

Rask smiled once.

It was not friendly.

It was approval.

They left Westbrook before the sun reached its highest point.

No ceremony.

No fresh army.

No Black Dragon reinforcements.

The active group was smaller now, and that made every injury more noticeable.

Galahad remained mission lead.

Darius walked near Kael, shoulder bound tightly enough to restrict some movement.

Iris took forward reconnaissance.

Sera moved high-side whenever the road gave her elevation.

Milo walked because sitting had apparently insulted him, though his pace made clear how little he had recovered.

Rask and Mara led the Iron Vanguard contingent.

Davin and Eron came with them.

Veyra stayed slightly apart from everyone.

Kael carried his own exhaustion.

No one could take that for him.

Without the wounded, they moved faster.

That did not mean fast.

The road they had spent hours escaping looked different on the way back.

Kael noticed everything they had been too relieved to see before.

Broken branches ten feet above the ground where something large had crossed.

Claw marks in road mud.

Places where animals had abandoned normal trails.

A half-eaten deer carcass with no sign that the predator had remained to feed.

Iris examined that one longer than Kael liked.

”Drake?”

She shook her head.

”Could be.”

Kael waited.

Iris looked toward the western trees.

”Whatever killed it left before finishing.”

”Disturbed?”

”Maybe.”

Again.

Maybe.

The word had followed them through the entire mission.

Kael was learning not to hate it.

Certainty without evidence would have killed them faster than ignorance.

They reached the charcoal camp in less time than before.

Bastin was gone with Rolan’s convoy, but the remaining workers had been warned. No one tried to stop the expedition. They refilled water, collected two coils of rope, and moved before anyone could prepare a meal.

Milo looked devastated.

Sera caught him staring at the cook pot.

”No.”

”I said nothing.”

”You were grieving.”

”I have experienced loss.”

”You ate this morning.”

”That was another life.”

Mara laughed.

It was the first time Kael had heard her laugh without something painful sitting underneath it.

Rask noticed too.

He did not comment.

Beyond the camp, they did not take the same route they had used during extraction.

That surprised Kael.

Iris noticed before he asked.

”You have another road.”

Mara shook her head.

”Not a road.”

”What?”

”Maintenance access.”

Galahad looked immediately suspicious.

”You could have used it during extraction?”

”No.”

”Why?”

”Because Tovin would have died.”

That ended the question.

Mara led them south of the old charcoal slide, where the forest thickened around a shallow ravine. They followed the ravine west for nearly twenty minutes before she stopped beside what looked like a collapsed stone retaining wall.

Kael saw nothing.

Iris did.

”Cut stones.”

Mara nodded.

She pulled aside hanging brush.

A narrow opening appeared between two slabs.

Milo stared.

”I hate hidden entrances.”

Rask looked at him.

”You are a mage.”

”That does not make architecture less dishonest.”

The passage beyond had once been reinforced.

Not recently.

Old timber framed the upper section, much of it replaced piece by piece over years. Iron braces had been added in places where stone fractured. The floor descended immediately.

Heat rose from below.

Not oppressive yet.

Noticeable.

Kael felt it beneath his armor.

The System appeared.

[Environmental Shift Detected]

Temperature: increasing

Air quality: acceptable

Sulfur compounds: trace

Geothermal activity: elevated

Structural condition: variable

No location name.

No convenient arrow telling him where Vance waited.

Good.

Kael looked at Mara.

”How far?”

”Until what?”

”Vance.”

”I don’t know.”

Rask answered from behind her.

”If he fell back where he was supposed to, hours.”

”And if he didn’t?”

Rask looked into the descending dark.

”Then we find out.”

Torches came out.

Milo raised one hand.

”No magical lights unless necessary.”

Kael looked toward him.

Milo shrugged.

”If Tovin taught us anything, it is that unknown residue and unnecessary mana make terrible roommates.”

Darius nodded.

”Physical light.”

Veyra glanced toward Milo.

”Smart.”

He looked offended.

”Why does everyone sound surprised?”

They descended.

The first hour contained no monsters.

That did not make it easy.

The maintenance route had been designed for workers carrying tools, not armed groups moving quickly through unstable volcanic terrain. Steps changed height without warning. Water dripped from one ceiling and steamed where it struck warmer stone farther below. Twice they had to squeeze sideways through places where the wall had shifted inward.

Mara knew where to slow.

That saved them.

At one narrow crossing, she stopped so abruptly that Rask nearly walked into her.

”What?”

She pointed down.

A hairline fracture cut across the stone floor.

Nothing dramatic.

Kael almost stepped over it.

Mara crouched.

”Don’t.”

Iris joined her.

”Why?”

Mara took a loose pebble and tossed it beyond the crack.

The floor collapsed.

Not all of it.

A section perhaps six feet wide dropped away into darkness with a violent series of impacts.

Hot air rushed upward.

Milo leaned over from a safe distance.

”I withdraw several previous criticisms.”

Mara looked back.

”Several?”

”Not all. I have standards.”

Kael peered into the gap.

The bottom was not visible.

The System opened.

[Subsurface void detected]

Depth: unresolved

Heat gradient: severe below

Crossing risk: high

Galahad looked at Milo.

Milo looked back.

”No.”

”You know what I’m asking.”

”I hate when people learn that.”

”You can bridge it?”

Milo studied the gap.

”Force Plane, yes. One person at a time. No jumping. No dramatic nonsense.”

Rask looked toward Davin.

Davin immediately said, ”I wasn’t going to.”

Eron laughed.

”You absolutely were.”

Davin glared at him.

Milo raised both hands.

Faint pressure distorted the air over the gap.

No huge spell.

No brilliance.

Just an invisible plane positioned where missing stone should have been.

”Walk normally,” Milo said. ”If any of you stomp because you are emotionally attached to your boots, I will drop you from principle.”

Sera crossed first after Iris tested it.

Darius followed.

Kael waited until Mara crossed.

Then Rask.

Then Davin and Eron.

By the time Kael stepped onto the plane, Milo’s face had become noticeably paler.

Kael moved quickly.

The surface felt wrong underfoot.

Solid without texture.

A floor made from decision.

He reached the opposite side.

Veyra crossed last.

Milo released the spell and immediately braced one hand against the wall.

Sera was beside him before anyone spoke.

”You all right?”

”No.”

Good answer.

She waited.

Milo breathed.

Then straightened.

”Functional.”

Galahad looked at him.

Milo sighed.

”Barely.”

”Then no more bridging unless necessary.”

”I was hoping you’d say that.”

They continued.

The deeper they went, the more evidence appeared.

Not monster signs.

People.

A broken handcart shoved against a wall.

A discarded glove.

A snapped pick handle.

Dried blood on a support brace.

Three empty waterskins.

Then a body.

Iris found him first.

Iron Vanguard.

Male.

Kael did not know him.

The man lay on his side near the tunnel wall, one arm trapped beneath him.

No obvious monster wounds.

Mara crouched.

Her hand hovered near his neck.

Stopped.

She already knew.

Rask looked at the face.

Something changed.

”You know him?” Kael asked.

Rask nodded.

”Yes.”

No name.

Not because the man lacked one.

Because Rask could not say it yet.

Galahad examined the floor.

”Collapse?”

Iris pointed toward the man’s leg.

Crushed.

Then toward dried blood farther down the passage.

”He moved after.”

Rask stared.

”How far?”

Iris looked backward.

”Hard to tell.”

Mara closed the dead man’s eyes.

Rask breathed once.

Then stood.

”We move.”

Kael looked at him.

Rask met his gaze.

”There are living people ahead.”

That was Galahad’s logic too.

Not leaving the dead.

Prioritizing who could still be saved.

Kael nodded.

They marked the location.

Then kept going.

The tunnel ended at a rusted iron ladder descending through a shaft.

Heat rose much harder here.

So did sound.

Not a roar.

Metal.

A distant series of strikes.

Three.

Pause.

One.

Pause.

Three.

Mara froze halfway toward the ladder.

Rask’s face changed.

”What?”

Kael asked.

Mara listened.

The pattern repeated.

Three.

One.

Three.

”Lower junction.”

Rask moved closer.

”Meaning?”

”Route open.”

Relief hit his face.

Not complete.

Enough.

”Someone’s alive.”

That changed everyone’s pace.

Not recklessly.

Urgently.

The ladder descended nearly forty feet.

Below, the tunnel widened and changed.

Less old mine.

More active work.

Reinforced braces.

Storage niches.

Tracks built into the floor for ore carts or supply carts.

Several lanterns still burned.

Kael touched one casing.

Warm.

Recently maintained.

Iris crouched near the track.

”Movement.”

”Human?”

”Mostly.”

Mostly.

Nobody asked.

They followed.

The first living Vanguard fighter nearly put a crossbow bolt through Iris.

She stopped before turning the corner.

Not because she saw him.

Because she heard the breath.

”Friendly enough,” she called.

The answer came instantly.

”Name.”

Rask stepped forward.

”Rask.”

Silence.

Then, ”Prove it.”

Rask swore.

Kel apparently was not the only difficult one.

”Your left knee clicks when you crouch, you cheat at cards, and you still owe me eight silver from Greyfen.”

A pause.

”Seven.”

”Eight.”

The crossbow lowered before its owner appeared.

The man stepped around the corner.

He looked exhausted.

Blood had dried down one side of his head.

Then he saw Kael.

The crossbow came back up.

Darius’s sword left its sheath halfway.

Not fully.

Enough.

The Vanguard fighter stared at Kael’s face.

Crimson eyes.

Black hair.

Imperial features were difficult to hide when someone knew what to look for.

”What did you do?”

Rask stepped between them.

”I brought help.”

”You brought an Asterion.”

”He brought our people out.”

”That does not make him help.”

Kael looked at the crossbow.

”You can decide later.”

The man’s eyes narrowed.

Kael continued.

”Are there people trapped below?”

That cut through everything.

The fighter looked toward Rask.

Rask nodded.

”Tell him.”

The man lowered the crossbow.

”Some.”

”How many?”

”Don’t know.”

Kael almost laughed from frustration.

The man saw it.

”You want a clean number, go find a clerk. We lost two sections when the east gallery folded. People moved. Some made the central hold. Some got cut off. We’ve been pulling whoever we can reach.”

”Vance?”

The fighter stared at Kael.

”What about him?”

”Alive?”

”Yes.”

Rask exhaled.

Mara closed her eyes for one second.

Kael asked, ”Where?”

The fighter looked like he disliked every possible answer.

”Forward hold.”

”Take us.”

”You think I’m walking a prince directly to him?”

Rask stepped closer.

”Yes.”

”You lost your mind.”

”Probably.”

The man looked toward Darius.

Recognition came next.

Worse.

”Valen.”

Darius said nothing.

The Vanguard fighter’s face went pale.

He looked back at Rask.

”You brought the Empire’s Shield into the lower hold.”

”Would you rather I brought flowers?”

Milo leaned toward Sera.

”I like him.”

Sera whispered, ”You like anyone who argues badly.”

”Shared culture.”

The Vanguard fighter stared at them as if wondering why these people were allowed near weapons.

Then the tunnel shook.

Not violently.

Enough to loosen dust from the ceiling.

Everyone stopped.

A sound rolled through the stone.

Deep.

Alive.

Closer than the roar from the charcoal camp.

Milo’s humor disappeared.

The Vanguard fighter looked toward the deeper tunnel.

”That.”

Kael felt the sound in his ribs.

”What?”

The man looked at him.

”The reason nobody cares that you’re a prince right now.”

They moved.

The forward hold was less a fortress than a place people had decided not to abandon.

Two natural stone chambers had been connected by reinforced passages. Barricades blocked three side tunnels. Workers and fighters occupied every available wall. Some were injured. Others carried tools instead of weapons. A temporary treatment area had been established beneath a line of lanterns.

No one cheered when Rask entered.

Several people stood.

Some looked relieved.

Others immediately noticed Kael.

That reaction spread.

Whispers.

Asterion.

Prince.

Valen.

Rask kept walking.

”Where is he?”

A woman with a bandaged jaw pointed toward the far chamber.

”Planning shelf.”

”Who’s with him?”

”Three.”

”Condition?”

”Angry.”

Rask nodded.

”Normal.”

They crossed the hold.

Kael counted injuries automatically.

Too many.

Burns.

Crushed limbs.

Bandages blackened by ash.

A man sleeping upright because lying flat apparently hurt too much.

A young woman holding pressure on another fighter’s leg.

Nobody looked prepared for a battle against something called the Ash-King.

They looked prepared to survive another hour.

The planning shelf sat above the second chamber.

A broad stone ledge accessible by six carved steps.

Maps were spread across a rough table.

Not formal maps.

Charcoal lines on hide.

Survey pages pinned under knives.

Stone fragments holding corners down.

Four people stood around it.

Three looked toward the newcomers.

The fourth did not.

He continued studying the map.

Rask stopped at the bottom step.

”Vance.”

The man looked up.

Theron Vance did not look like Kael expected.

That was Kael’s first thought.

No elaborate armor.

No dramatic cloak.

No throne built from stolen weapons.

His field gear was scorched and repaired in several places. One forearm had been wrapped from wrist to elbow. Dried blood marked the edge of his collar. His face carried the exhaustion of someone who had stopped measuring time in days.

His eyes went first to Rask.

Then Mara.

Davin.

Eron.

Something in his shoulders loosened.

”You found them.”

Rask nodded.

”Most.”

Vance’s eyes moved to Kael.

The looseness vanished.

Then Darius.

For the first time, Kael saw genuine surprise.

Not fear.

Calculation.

Vance looked back at Rask.

”You brought me a prince.”

Rask climbed one step.

”I brought you people who can fight.”

”I had those.”

”You have fewer now.”

Vance’s jaw tightened.

Rask continued.

”They brought our people out.”

Vance looked toward Kael again.

”Did they?”

Kael met his gaze.

”Tovin Marr is alive.”

Vance’s expression changed very slightly.

”Lysa?”

”Alive.”

”Derren?”

”Alive.”

”Rellan?”

Kael did not answer quickly enough.

Vance understood.

His gaze dropped to the map.

”Joren?”

”Missing.”

That made Vance look up again.

”Where?”

”Steam release in the lower works.”

Vance’s mouth flattened.

Rask stepped onto the shelf.

”We heard the emergency plate last night.”

Vance’s attention snapped back to him.

”From outside?”

”Yes.”

”Then the line carried farther than we thought.”

Mara came up behind Rask.

”What happened?”

Vance looked at her.

”The Ash-King broke the western shelf.”

No one spoke.

Vance pointed to the map.

A heavy charcoal line marked what Kael assumed was a passage.

Half of it had been crossed out.

”Yesterday it was ranging south. We thought we had another day before it pushed toward the lower routes.”

Darius climbed the steps.

”It changed direction.”

Vance looked at him.

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”If I knew that, Shield, we would be having a better week.”

No title.

No Sir.

No deference.

Darius did not seem bothered.

Kael stepped closer to the table.

”You have people cut off.”

Vance studied him.

”Yes.”

”How many?”

”Confirmed?”

”Yes.”

”Eleven.”

Finally.

A number.

Vance continued.

”Possibly fourteen if the three survey workers from the eastern split are still alive.”

”Where?”

Vance pointed to two locations on the rough map.

”Seven beyond the collapsed lower gallery. Four at an old ventilation station here. The other three were moving between them before the last line failed.”

Kael studied the marks.

”And the Ash-King is between you and them.”

Vance looked at him.

”The Ash-King is between us and almost everything.”

Milo reached the top of the steps slowly.

He leaned one hand on the table.

Nobody told him not to.

”What exactly is it?”

Vance looked toward Rask.

”He didn’t tell you?”

”He gave us the friendly version.”

Rask scowled.

Vance looked back at Milo.

”It is the largest draconic creature in this Caldera.”

”Dragon?”

”No.”

”Drake?”

”No.”

Milo frowned.

”You people have a naming problem.”

Under other circumstances, someone might have laughed.

Vance did not.

”Call it whatever makes you comfortable. It will still tear a mature drake in half.”

That ended Milo’s questions for the moment.

Vance tapped another section of the map.

”It nests below the inner shelf. For years it rarely moved beyond the deepest volcanic chambers. Something changed. Pressure. Heat. Territory. I don’t know. It started killing anything entering routes it used to ignore.”

Iris moved closer.

”Drakes fled east.”

Vance looked at her.

”Yes.”

”You knew.”

”We knew they were leaving its territory.”

”Did you know they were reaching settlements?”

”No.”

Iris watched him.

Vance did not look away.

She accepted nothing.

But she stopped.

Kael pointed at the crossed-out western shelf.

”You have been trying to kill it.”

Vance’s face remained unreadable.

”Yes.”

”For how long?”

”Long enough to bury people.”

”That isn’t a number.”

Vance looked at him.

”You like numbers.”

”I like knowing what I’m walking into.”

A faint expression touched Vance’s face.

Not quite amusement.

”Good.”

He reached beneath one of the maps and pulled out a marked survey sheet.

”Three serious attempts.”

Galahad stepped forward.

”Results?”

”First taught us its hide is harder than we thought. Second taught us it can climb vertical basalt faster than something that size should move. Third cost me nine people and taught us not to fight it near a magma vent.”

Galahad took the sheet.

”No fourth?”

Vance looked toward the lower chamber.

”There was going to be.”

”Before what?”

”Everything else failed.”

That sounded almost simple.

Kael looked around the hold.

Burned people.

Broken equipment.

Exhausted fighters.

The laboratory questions remained.

Tovin.

Lysa.

Foreign residue.

Altered drakes.

Joren.

All of it.

Kael looked directly at Vance.

”People under your organization held Guild adventurers and exposed them to foreign magical material.”

The room around the planning shelf went quieter.

Rask watched Vance.

Mara did too.

Vance’s expression did not change.

”I heard.”

”From whom?”

”People who made it here before you.”

”Did you order it?”

Darius looked at Kael.

Galahad did not interrupt.

Vance stared at him for several seconds.

”No.”

Rask’s eyes narrowed.

Kael continued.

”Did you know?”

”I knew lower teams were working with monster-core integration.”

There.

Milo stopped leaning lazily.

Sera’s eyes sharpened.

Veyra went completely still.

Kael felt his anger rise.

”On people?”

Vance’s jaw tightened.

”Not unwilling people.”

”That is not what happened.”

”I know that now.”

”Convenient.”

Vance stepped away from the table.

”You want to arrest me?”

Kael did not move.

”I want answers.”

”You want answers while eleven people are trapped behind a creature that has already started moving again.”

”That doesn’t erase what happened.”

”No.”

The answer came immediately.

That stopped Kael more effectively than an excuse would have.

Vance continued.

”It does decide what happens first.”

Kael stared at him.

Theron Vance looked tired.

Not weak.

Not apologetic.

Tired.

”There are eleven people we know are alive,” Vance said. ”Maybe fourteen. The ventilation station has air and water but not enough food for long. The lower gallery is worse. We tried the eastern bypass. Ash-King collapsed it. We tried the upper chimney. Gas killed two people before they reached the halfway marker.”

Galahad looked at the map.

”And the direct route?”

Vance gave him a humorless smile.

”Through its territory.”

Nobody spoke.

Then Darius asked the question that mattered.

”Can it be drawn away?”

”We tried.”

”Can it be trapped?”

”We tried.”

”Can it be driven into another section?”

”We tried.”

Darius’s gaze hardened.

”So the remaining option is kill it.”

”Yes.”

The word carried no excitement.

That mattered.

Kael looked down at the map.

He had expected to come west looking for missing adventurers.

That became missing workers.

Then experiments.

Then altered drakes.

Now eleven people sat behind a creature large enough to make mature drakes flee.

He felt the old impulse rising.

Solve everything.

Right now.

The System appeared.

[Mission Conditions Updated]

Confirmed living personnel trapped: 11

Additional personnel status: uncertain

Primary obstruction: unidentified high-threat draconic entity locally designated ”Ash-King”

Environmental hazards: severe

Geothermal instability: escalating

Party condition: degraded

Recommendation: gather direct tactical information before engagement

Kael almost smiled.

For once, the System’s advice sounded exactly like Darius.

Vance noticed his expression.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

Milo sighed.

”System.”

Vance’s eyes sharpened.

Kael looked at him.

Milo looked at the ceiling.

”I have become too observant.”

Vance did not ask.

Interesting.

Kael returned his attention to the map.

”We don’t attack it today.”

Vance’s expression hardened.

Rask stared.

Kael continued before anyone could misunderstand.

”We see it today.”

Darius nodded.

Galahad did too.

Vance’s eyes narrowed slightly.

Kael pointed toward the routes.

”You have fought it three times. We haven’t. Iris sees the terrain. Darius sees how it moves. Sera sees what angles actually exist. Milo sees what can be redirected and what cannot. Galahad sees how many people a plan will kill.”

Milo raised one finger.

”And I see that I am tired.”

Kael ignored him.

Vance watched.

Kael continued.

”You want a fourth attempt? Then we stop repeating the first three.”

For the first time, Vance smiled.

Not kindly.

Not mockingly.

Like someone seeing a useful tool and deciding it might not break immediately.

”Good.”

Darius’s gaze moved between them.

Kael noticed.

He would ask later.

Vance rolled the map.

”We leave in ten minutes.”

Galahad shook his head.

”Twenty.”

Vance looked at him.

”Our people have been waiting.”

”And mine just crossed half the western forest twice.”

Vance stepped closer.

Galahad did not.

”Fifteen.”

”Twenty.”

Rask covered his mouth.

Mara looked away.

Kael realized she was hiding a smile.

Vance stared at Galahad.

Galahad stared back.

”Twenty,” Vance said.

Galahad nodded.

”Good.”

Milo whispered to Sera, ”He negotiated rest.”

Sera glanced at him.

”You should learn.”

”I have found a master.”

Twenty minutes later, Kael stood at the edge of the forward hold with his sword at his side and heat pressing against his face.

No one had recovered.

They had eaten.

Refilled water.

Retightened armor.

Rewrapped wounds.

Sera checked her nine usable arrows and the cracked emergency shaft without comment.

Iris replaced one rope coil with a shorter length better suited for underground movement.

Milo sat for exactly eighteen of the twenty minutes and complained through most of them.

Darius did not sit at all.

Kael did.

That surprised everyone.

He did not explain.

Vance emerged from the planning shelf wearing the same battered field gear.

Rask joined him.

For a moment, Kael saw the difference between leader and follower in the way Rask stood.

Not fear.

History.

Whatever Theron Vance had built, Rask had spent fifteen years inside it.

Mara moved toward a side route.

”This way.”

Vance stopped her.

”No.”

She looked back.

”Why?”

”Western observation line collapsed.”

”When?”

”Morning.”

”Then how do we see it?”

Vance pointed toward a narrow descent on the opposite side of the chamber.

”Old vent route.”

Mara swore.

Milo looked toward Kael.

”Everyone hates every route. I find that comforting.”

They entered the old vent passage.

The heat doubled in the first hundred feet.

Sweat ran down Kael’s spine.

His Ice mana stirred almost instinctively beneath his skin.

He suppressed it.

Not yet.

The passage widened gradually, opening into black volcanic stone veined with dull red light far below.

No flames.

No open lava.

Just heat breathing through cracks.

Then Iris stopped.

Everyone behind her stopped.

She crouched.

A footprint filled most of the path.

Not a human footprint.

Not a normal drake print.

Three forward claws had cut deep grooves into basalt dust.

The rear pad was wider than Kael’s chest.

Sera stared.

Milo leaned around Darius.

”Oh.”

Nobody joked.

Vance stepped beside Kael.

”Still want to see it first?”

”Yes.”

”Good.”

The stone beneath their feet trembled.

Once.

Then again.

A deep impact.

Farther ahead.

Not close.

Not far enough.

Kael felt it through his boots.

Another impact.

Then a grinding sound like stone being dragged across stone.

Vance looked toward the darkness ahead.

”That is it.”

Kael’s hand settled on his sword.

Not drawing.

Not yet.

They moved forward slowly.

The vent route opened onto a narrow shelf overlooking part of the inner Caldera.

Kael reached the edge.

And stopped.

The world below was enormous.

Black cliffs descended around a broken volcanic basin, their surfaces scarred by old flows and newer collapses. Steam drifted through cracks. Red light pulsed beneath fractured stone in distant channels. Ash moved across the basin in thin sheets whenever hot air rose.

Something moved through it.

At first Kael’s mind refused to judge the scale.

Then the creature stepped between two basalt pillars.

One pillar reached its shoulder.

Its hide looked black beneath the ash, but red showed between some of the larger scales as though heat lived beneath them. Old scars crossed its flank. One horn had broken near the tip. Its tail dragged a line through loose stone wide enough for a wagon.

A mature drake stood dead near its path.

The Ash-King lowered its head.

Its jaws closed around the carcass.

Bone cracked.

Even from the shelf, Kael heard it.

No one spoke.

The System appeared.

Then paused.

For the first time in a long while, Kael felt the System hesitate before giving him anything useful.

[High-Threat Draconic Entity Detected]

Local Designation: Ash-King

Detailed assessment incomplete

Extreme physiological output detected

Extreme heat tolerance

Mana density: high

Threat analysis: insufficient observation

Recommendation: DO NOT ENGAGE WITHOUT FURTHER ASSESSMENT

Kael stared.

Milo whispered from behind him.

”I agree with whatever your face just read.”

Vance stood beside Kael.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then Vance pointed across the basin.

Kael followed.

On the far side, almost hidden beneath an overhang, a narrow opening broke the cliff.

”The lower gallery survivors are behind that ridge.”

His hand shifted slightly south.

”The ventilation station is beyond the second shelf.”

Kael understood.

There was no clean way around.

The Ash-King stood between them and the people waiting below.

Vance looked at him.

”You came down here because you didn’t want to leave people behind.”

Kael did not look away from the creature.

”Yes.”

”Then now you understand the problem.”

The Ash-King lifted its head.

Slowly.

Ash slid from its horns.

Its nostrils widened.

Kael’s body went still.

Darius’s hand closed around his sword hilt.

Iris lowered herself.

Sera did not reach for an arrow.

Milo stopped breathing loudly.

Vance’s expression hardened.

The Ash-King turned toward the shelf.

Not directly.

Not yet.

Its head tilted.

Searching.

Vance spoke barely above a whisper.

”Back.”

Nobody argued.

They withdrew one controlled step at a time.

No running.

No spellcasting.

No scraping steel.

Kael kept his eyes on the basin until stone blocked his view.

Only then did he breathe properly again.

The roar came after them.

It struck the vent passage like a physical force.

Dust exploded from the ceiling.

Milo caught a falling rock with a tiny Force Plane and pushed it aside rather than spending the mana to stop everything.

Sera braced against the wall.

Kael’s ribs hurt from the vibration alone.

Then the roar ended.

Silence returned slowly.

Vance looked at Kael.

”That is the Ash-King.”

Kael breathed through the pain in his side.

Then looked back toward the darkness they had just left.

Eleven people.

Maybe fourteen.

On the other side of that.

He tightened his grip on his sword.

”Then we learn how to kill it.”

Vance’s eyes stayed on him.

For one long moment, something unreadable passed across his face.

Then he nodded.

”We start now.”
