The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

The continuous ringing did not stop.

It came through the eastern drainage in uneven bursts, metal striking metal hard enough that the sound carried through the cistern walls and vibrated faintly beneath Kael’s boots.

Danger.

Not uncertainty.

Not a delayed route.

Danger.

Galahad was already moving before the second burst finished.

”Darius, front. Iris with him. Kael, keep Lysa behind the first line. Everyone else stays tight.”

The three messengers immediately turned east again. The wounded Iron Vanguard man among them looked toward the western passage, where Kael’s System continued tracking the group following from below.

”How far behind us?”

Kael focused.

[Directional Scan]

Pursuing humanoid signatures: 9

Distance: decreasing

Estimated time to cistern at current pace: 4–6 minutes

”They’ll reach the cistern soon.”

Galahad nodded once. ”Then we don’t fight here unless we have to.”

Lysa leaned against Kael because there was no longer time to rebuild the litter they had abandoned. Her injured ankle barely touched the ground, but even that seemed to hurt. Kael had one arm around her waist while she kept the other around his shoulder.

His injured shoulder.

Every few steps, pain pulled through it.

He said nothing.

Lysa noticed anyway.

”You’re hurt.”

”So are you.”

”That wasn’t an answer.”

”Then we’re both doing badly.”

She almost smiled.

The next clang echoed through the passage.

Her smile disappeared.

They moved.

The eastern drainage route was narrower than Kael remembered from the earlier trip through it. That was impossible, of course. The stone had not changed that much in less than an hour.

What had changed was what waited ahead.

The walls felt closer when somewhere beyond them Sera and Milo were holding a line around two critically wounded men.

The System appeared again.

[Environmental Scan]

Airflow: eastward

Temperature: moderate

Vibration level: increasing

Structural integrity: locally stable

Humanoid cluster ahead: significant

Kael did not need the System to hear them now.

Voices.

A lot of voices.

Shouting.

Commands.

Then another metallic strike.

Continuous.

Galahad increased the pace.

Not running.

Fast enough.

The first junction came into view after the passage curved upward.

Kael saw Sera first.

She stood on top of a broken stone support with an arrow already drawn.

Her bow was aimed down the eastern passage.

Milo stood below her with both hands raised, not casting yet, but ready. The healers had moved Derren and Tovin’s litters against the northern wall, where a collapsed drainage lip created partial cover. The walking wounded formed a rough defensive line around them with the workers.

No one was fighting.

Yet.

That mattered.

Then Kael saw the people facing them.

More than twenty.

The messenger had been right.

Armed men and women filled the far side of the junction. Some wore the same iron insignia Kael had seen repeatedly below. Others wore work leathers, partial armor, or heavy coats stained with ash and mineral dust. Several had swords drawn. Two carried spears. One man held a short recurve bow but had not nocked an arrow.

They were not charging.

Sera was not firing.

The danger signal had been called because both groups had reached the point where one bad decision could start a battle neither side could easily stop.

Milo saw Kael first.

Relief crossed his face.

Then he noticed Lysa.

His expression changed completely.

”You found her.”

Kael nodded.

Milo looked toward Galahad.

”Alive?”

”Yes.”

”Good.”

That was all the celebration they had time for.

Sera never took her eyes off the armed group.

”They showed up five minutes after we reached the junction.”

Galahad moved forward. ”Who?”

”No one gives names.”

Milo added, ”A tradition.”

The man standing at the front of the opposing group looked toward Galahad.

Then Darius.

Then Kael.

Then Lysa.

His reaction to Lysa was small.

Too small for Kael to know what it meant.

Recognition?

Surprise?

Fear?

No assumption.

Galahad stopped well outside sword range.

”You’re blocking the extraction route.”

The man answered, ”The route is closed.”

Galahad looked past him.

”By what?”

”Collapse.”

”Where?”

”Farther east.”

”How far?”

No answer.

Galahad waited.

The man’s expression hardened.

”Does it matter?”

”Yes.”

”You won’t be using it.”

That was the first clearly hostile statement.

Sera’s bowstring tightened slightly.

Milo did not move.

Darius remained beside Galahad, sword lowered but already drawn.

Kael helped Lysa sit near Derren’s litter.

Derren saw her.

For a second, he seemed not to understand.

Then his eyes widened.

”Lysa.”

She turned.

Derren tried to rise.

The healer put one hand against his chest.

”No.”

”But—”

”No.”

Lysa’s face crumpled.

Not completely.

Enough.

”You’re alive.”

Derren laughed once, then winced because laughing hurt his ribs.

”So are you.”

Tovin remained unconscious beside them.

Lysa looked at him.

Her expression changed again.

She reached toward the litter.

The older healer caught her wrist gently.

”Do not move him.”

Lysa nodded immediately.

”Is he—”

”Alive.”

Lysa closed her eyes.

One breath.

Two.

Then Galahad’s voice pulled everyone back to the larger problem.

”Why is the eastern route closed?”

The man opposite him looked toward Lysa.

”You brought her out.”

Galahad did not follow the bait.

”I asked about the route.”

”Take her back.”

Milo sighed softly.

”Apparently we are doing this again.”

Sera looked down from her position. ”You heard that too?”

”Unfortunately.”

Galahad’s voice became colder. ”No.”

The man’s jaw tightened.

”You don’t understand what happened below.”

”Then explain it.”

”She was exposed.”

Galahad looked tired now.

Not physically.

Tired of the phrase.

”Exposed to what?”

The man said nothing.

Milo looked toward Sera.

”Do you think they practice refusing the important part?”

”Quiet.”

He was.

Mostly.

Darius stepped forward half a pace.

The reaction was immediate.

Three people in the opposing line shifted their weapons.

Not attacking.

Preparing.

Darius stopped.

He had done nothing threatening beyond moving.

That alone was enough.

The man in front looked toward him.

”You’re Valen.”

Darius gave no reaction.

Not confirmation.

Not denial.

The man continued, ”Then you should know better than to carry contamination out of a sealed level.”

Kael focused on Lysa.

The System did not show some sudden corruption warning.

It showed what it had before.

[Living Target Assessment]

Physical condition: weakened

Injuries: multiple

Mana activity: irregular

Foreign magical residue: trace

Kael’s attention sharpened.

Trace.

That had not been prominent before.

He focused harder.

[Detailed Analysis]

Foreign residue concentration: low

Pattern: inconsistent

Current destabilization: not detected

Cause: unresolved

This was not nothing.

It was also nowhere near enough to justify locking Lysa away.

Kael spoke quietly to Galahad.

”She does have traces of foreign magical residue.”

Everyone near him heard.

Lysa looked at Kael.

Fear appeared immediately.

Galahad turned his head slightly. ”Dangerous?”

”I can’t tell.”

”Is it changing?”

”No.”

”Active?”

”Not in a way I can identify.”

The opposing man seized on it.

”You see?”

Kael looked at him.

”No.”

The man frowned.

Kael continued, ”I see residue. I do not see proof that she is dangerous.”

”You don’t know what you are looking at.”

”Correct.”

That answer disarmed him for a moment.

Kael did not pretend expertise he did not have.

”Which is why someone should explain it.”

The man looked toward the people behind him.

No one volunteered.

Galahad’s patience was thinning.

”Was she deliberately exposed?”

Silence.

That question landed differently.

Kael noticed it immediately.

So did Iris.

The scout had moved slightly to Galahad’s left, watching faces instead of weapons.

One woman in the second row looked away.

The man at the front said, ”It doesn’t matter.”

Galahad’s expression hardened.

”It matters very much.”

”What matters is that she goes back.”

”No.”

”Then no one leaves.”

There.

The junction changed.

Not yet violence.

But closer.

Sera adjusted her aim.

The bowman opposite her finally nocked an arrow.

Milo saw it.

His hands lowered slightly.

Not surrender.

Positioning.

Kael knew enough of Milo’s magic now to recognize when he was preparing to manipulate the space in front of him.

No spell yet.

Good.

Nobody needed an accidental battle.

Behind Kael, Lysa whispered, ”It was them.”

Kael looked back.

She was staring at the group.

”Who?”

Lysa’s breathing shortened.

”Some.”

”Which ones?”

She shook her head.

”Not faces.”

That mattered too.

She had been injured, frightened, moved through dark tunnels.

Kael did not force certainty.

Galahad asked, ”Did these people imprison you?”

Lysa looked at him.

”Some of the voices.”

Several people in the opposing line reacted.

The front man said immediately, ”She’s confused.”

Lysa flinched.

Kael’s grip tightened on his sword.

Derren heard.

He pushed himself higher despite the healer’s hand.

”She knows what she heard.”

”Derren,” the healer warned.

He ignored her.

”You people took them?”

The front man did not answer.

Derren’s anger rose.

”Rellan died.”

That name moved through the junction.

Not everyone reacted.

A few did.

One man near the back lowered his eyes.

Another looked toward the floor.

Galahad caught it.

”Some of you knew him.”

No answer.

Milo spoke more quietly now.

”That silence is getting expensive.”

The Iron Vanguard guide who had previously escorted them had not returned with this larger group. Kael realized that only after searching the faces.

Different crews.

Different field leaders.

Different knowledge.

The rescued fighter had warned them already.

Not everyone here operated together.

Galahad looked across the group.

”Who is in charge?”

The front man answered, ”Here? Me.”

”Name.”

A pause.

”Rask.”

Finally.

Not a grand title.

Not a dramatic reveal.

A name.

Galahad nodded. ”Rask. I am Galahad Charney, mission lead for the Blackwood Adventure Guild. These three people disappeared during Guild-linked operations. One member of their party is dead. Two were recovered severely injured. The third was found restrained in a locked room connected to an alarm system.”

Rask’s expression did not change.

Galahad continued. ”If you have evidence Lysa is dangerous, show it.”

”We don’t have time.”

”Then move.”

Rask looked toward the eastern route.

”You still think you’re leaving that way.”

Galahad’s eyes narrowed.

”There really is a collapse.”

”Yes.”

”How bad?”

Rask hesitated.

Then answered.

”Bad enough that the main passage is gone.”

Milo looked toward the ceiling.

”Wonderful.”

Sera asked, ”Alternative?”

Rask said nothing.

Galahad took another step.

Darius remained beside him.

Rask looked toward Darius again.

Then toward the western route behind Kael’s group.

”You have people following you.”

Kael’s System confirmed it almost simultaneously.

[Directional Warning]

Humanoid signatures approaching from west

Count: 9

Estimated arrival: 60–90 seconds

Kael looked toward Galahad.

”They’re almost here.”

Rask’s expression suggested he had expected that.

Galahad noticed.

”You know them?”

”Yes.”

”Friends?”

Rask did not answer quickly enough.

Milo groaned.

”Fantastic.”

Galahad looked around the junction.

Two armed groups.

One wounded column.

A blocked eastern route.

Nine more people approaching from behind.

This was exactly the kind of situation where trying to solve everything with one fight would get people killed.

”Everyone lowers weapons.”

Nobody moved.

Galahad raised his voice.

”All of you.”

Rask laughed once. ”You first.”

Galahad sheathed his sword.

Sera looked down sharply.

”Galahad.”

”Keep the arrow nocked. Lower the bow.”

She hesitated.

Then lowered it enough that she was no longer aiming at Rask’s chest.

Milo relaxed his hands.

Darius did not sheath his sword.

Galahad looked at him.

Darius looked back.

Then lowered the point toward the ground.

Good enough.

Galahad faced Rask.

”We have critically wounded people. You apparently have a destroyed exit. Another group is coming behind us. If we start killing each other here before we know what the ground is doing, everyone loses.”

Rask stared.

Then someone behind him said, ”He’s right.”

Rask looked back sharply.

The speaker was a middle-aged woman wearing a sleeveless leather coat over work clothes. She had no visible weapon beyond a utility knife.

Rask said, ”Stay out of it.”

”No.”

That surprised more than Kael.

The woman pushed forward through the armed line.

”You want to hold a prince, an Imperial Shield, and a Guild mission in a drainage junction while the lower passages are failing?”

Rask’s jaw tightened.

She continued, ”That is stupid.”

Milo whispered, ”I like her.”

Sera did not disagree.

Rask looked around.

His authority was not absolute.

Important.

The woman stopped several paces behind him.

”The eastern main route collapsed near the spill split.”

Galahad immediately focused on her.

”Completely?”

”Main road, yes.”

”Other routes?”

”Maintenance ledge above it.”

Rask turned. ”Mara.”

There.

Another name.

Mara ignored him.

”Too narrow for the normal supply carts.”

Galahad looked toward Derren and Tovin.

”Litters?”

Mara considered.

”Maybe, if you strip the side poles.”

The same problem Iris had already solved on another route.

Possible.

Not good.

Possible.

Rask looked furious.

”Enough.”

Mara finally looked at him.

”You were going to do what? Keep everyone here until the lower crews arrive?”

”Yes.”

”And then?”

Rask said nothing.

That was the problem.

Mara shook her head.

”You don’t have a then.”

Before he could answer, the western passage filled with footsteps.

Darius turned.

Iris moved.

Sera raised her bow again.

Galahad did not draw his sword yet.

Nine people came around the bend.

The first was the same man whose voice Lysa had recognized earlier.

He stopped when he saw the junction.

His eyes moved from Rask to Galahad.

Then Lysa.

”You brought her here.”

Rask turned toward him.

”Joren.”

The name landed.

Joren.

The man who had demanded Lysa back.

The one Lysa identified by voice as connected to her captivity.

Joren looked toward Rask. ”Take her.”

Galahad moved immediately between them.

”No.”

Joren’s attention settled on him.

”You were warned.”

”And you still haven’t explained anything.”

Joren looked toward Kael.

”You found the residue.”

Kael frowned.

”How do you know?”

Joren did not answer.

That was important.

Galahad caught it too.

”You knew what she was exposed to.”

Joren’s expression remained flat.

Rask looked toward him.

Even he seemed interested now.

”Do you?”

Joren ignored him.

That created another crack.

Kael watched.

Rask knew something.

Joren knew more.

Mara perhaps knew different pieces.

This was not one organization acting with one mind.

Joren looked at Lysa.

”She goes back below.”

Lysa recoiled.

Derren swore from his litter.

Tovin remained unconscious.

Galahad’s voice became dangerously calm.

”Why?”

”Because she was part of a failed exposure group.”

Silence.

The words reached everyone.

Kael felt something cold move through him that had nothing to do with Ice.

Failed exposure group.

Not an accident.

Not contamination from the environment.

Group.

Galahad stared at Joren.

”What does that mean?”

Joren seemed to realize he had said too much.

Mara looked at him.

Rask did too.

”Exposure to what?” Rask asked.

Joren’s jaw tightened.

That answer was revealing in its absence.

Rask did not know.

At least not fully.

Galahad moved one step closer.

”Were Rellan, Tovin, and Lysa experimented on?”

Joren said nothing.

Lysa’s breathing changed.

Kael turned toward her.

”Lysa?”

She shook her head.

”I don’t know.”

Good.

No sudden recovered memory because a phrase was spoken.

Joren looked toward the eastern passage.

”We don’t have time for this.”

Darius finally spoke.

”No.”

Everyone went quiet.

Darius’s voice was not loud.

”You do not have time.”

Joren looked toward him.

Darius continued.

”You pursued wounded people through unstable passages rather than explain what danger they carried. You demanded a prisoner be returned without evidence. Now you admit she belongs to a failed exposure group.”

Joren’s expression hardened.

Darius took one slow step forward.

No Aura Pressure.

No lightning.

No unnecessary display.

Just presence.

”You will explain.”

For the first time, Joren looked uncertain.

Then the ground moved.

Hard.

Not a tremor.

A violent sideways jolt.

The entire junction lurched.

People shouted.

Sera dropped from the broken support before it could throw her.

Kael grabbed the edge of Lysa’s litter and the wall simultaneously.

Derren’s litter slid.

Milo reacted instantly.

One hand snapped outward.

A brief burst of Force caught the frame before it struck the stone.

He grunted as the spell hit his depleted reserves.

”Got it.”

The healers pulled Derren back.

Tovin’s litter tilted.

Mara caught one side.

An Iron Vanguard fighter caught the other.

For one chaotic second, enemies and allies stopped mattering.

Then the ceiling cracked.

The System erupted across Kael’s vision.

[STRUCTURAL ALERT]

Major load shift detected

Ceiling failure risk: HIGH

Eastern wall fracture expanding

Subsurface pressure spike

MOVE

”Out of the center!” Kael shouted.

No one asked why.

Darius grabbed two wounded workers and shoved them toward the northern wall.

Galahad helped drag Tovin’s litter.

Sera pulled one healer clear.

Milo used another short Force Pulse to knock falling fragments away from Derren.

Rask shouted for his people to spread.

Mara grabbed Lysa’s litter with Kael.

Joren disappeared behind the shifting crowd.

The center of the junction split.

Not open.

Yet.

A jagged fracture raced through the floor from west to east.

Hot air burst through it.

Then steam.

People scrambled back.

The System updated.

[Gas / Steam Release]

Temperature: dangerous

Pressure: rising

Secondary rupture probable

Kael looked around.

Too many people.

Too narrow.

If the fissure widened, half the junction would become unusable.

Galahad understood immediately.

”Eastern maintenance ledge!”

Rask turned. ”It may not hold this many.”

”Then standing here is worse.”

Mara pointed toward a narrow stair cut into the eastern wall, almost invisible behind an old drainage pillar.

”There!”

People moved.

Not cleanly.

Too many bodies.

Panic began at the back.

Kael heard someone shout that the lower tunnel was opening.

Another said drakes were coming.

No evidence yet.

Fear did not care.

Galahad climbed onto a broken stone block.

”Stop pushing!”

Some listened.

Not enough.

Then Darius moved beside him.

Still no Aura Pressure.

He simply roared:

”FORM TWO LINES!”

The voice cut through the junction.

Soldier’s command.

People reacted before thinking.

Those used to orders straightened.

Rask shouted the same command to his side.

Mara started sorting wounded and uninjured.

Galahad immediately used it.

”Walking wounded first with one escort each. Litters after. Fighters last.”

Milo looked toward the eastern stair.

”Narrow.”

Sera nodded. ”I go up first.”

”Why?”

”To see if it exists.”

”Fair.”

She ran.

Iris followed.

Kael remained near Lysa.

The fissure hissed behind him.

More steam escaped.

The System flashed.

[Pressure behavior abnormal]

Potential interaction with blocked relief network

There it was again.

Their earlier discovery.

The deliberately blocked drainage route had not caused all of this by itself.

But every obstruction mattered more now.

Sera’s voice came from above.

”Passable!”

Iris shouted next.

”Twenty inches at the narrowest! Ledges after that!”

Galahad looked toward the litters.

”We strip them.”

The healers immediately protested.

”No time,” he said.

”Then carry them by canvas,” the older healer answered.

Better.

Derren was transferred first.

The side poles came off.

Canvas and straps remained beneath him, allowing four people to carry him through the narrow stair without turning his body sideways too sharply.

Milo took one strap.

Kael saw the healer look at him.

”I know,” Milo said. ”Mana.”

She frowned.

”I was going to say your hand is bleeding.”

Milo looked down.

A cut crossed his palm.

”When did that happen?”

”No idea.”

”Wonderful.”

She wrapped it quickly while he walked.

Derren disappeared up the stair.

Tovin came next.

Lysa watched.

Kael could feel her shaking again.

”You’re going after them.”

She looked at him.

”What about you?”

”I’m behind you.”

”That wasn’t what I asked.”

Kael almost smiled.

”Apparently I’ve become predictable.”

”Yes.”

Mara came over.

”I’ll help carry her.”

Kael looked at her.

”Why?”

She glanced toward Rask.

Then Joren, who had reappeared near the western side.

”Because whatever this is, she doesn’t belong in a cell while people argue about it.”

Lysa stared at her.

”Were you there?”

Mara’s face changed.

”No.”

Lysa studied her.

Then nodded.

Not trust.

Permission.

Kael and Mara lifted her.

They moved toward the stair.

Joren stepped into their path.

Darius intercepted him.

No sword strike.

He simply placed himself between Joren and the litter.

Joren looked up at him.

”She cannot leave.”

Darius’s expression did not change.

”Move.”

”You don’t understand.”

”Then use words.”

Joren glanced toward the widening fissure.

”There isn’t time.”

Darius’s answer came immediately.

”Then you chose poorly when you had it.”

Joren’s hand shifted near his sword.

Darius noticed.

So did everyone close enough.

For one second, Kael thought Joren might actually draw.

Rask shouted from behind them.

”Joren!”

Joren turned.

Rask’s expression was furious.

”Not now.”

That was not support for Galahad.

It was survival.

Good enough.

Joren stepped aside.

Kael and Mara carried Lysa up.

The maintenance stair was worse than Sera had described.

The first section rose sharply through a crack in the eastern wall. Old iron brackets had once supported some kind of service platform, but most of the wood was gone. What remained was a narrow stone ledge cut around the outside of a vertical drainage shaft.

Below it:

darkness.

Far below:

water.

Milo stood twenty paces ahead beside Derren, breathing hard.

Sera guarded the outer edge.

Iris was farther forward checking the route.

Tovin had made it through.

Alive.

That alone mattered.

Kael helped lower Lysa onto a wider section of ledge.

She looked down once.

Then stopped.

”I preferred the cell.”

”No, you didn’t.”

”No.”

That tiny admission almost sounded normal.

Then the System warned him.

[AIRFLOW CHANGE]

Hot updraft increasing from shaft

Possible pressure discharge below

Kael looked down.

Steam drifted upward.

Not enough to burn yet.

Could become enough.

”Keep moving.”

Galahad emerged behind them.

Then Rask.

Mara.

Several workers.

The junction below continued emptying.

Joren came through later with his nine.

No one fought.

For now.

The environment had made the argument smaller than survival.

The maintenance route bent east along the shaft.

It was barely wide enough for two people side by side.

No railing.

No room for a conventional battle.

Perfect.

Kael hated it.

Iris returned.

”Ledge widens ahead. Then an old service chamber.”

”How far?” Galahad asked.

”Five minutes.”

”Exit?”

”Not checked beyond.”

Galahad nodded. ”Chamber first.”

They moved.

Derren groaned once when his canvas sling shifted.

Tovin did not wake.

Lysa drifted in and out of awareness but refused to close her eyes for long.

Milo used almost no magic.

Only once, when one of the walking wounded slipped near the edge.

A small Vector Pull snapped the man backward before he fell.

Milo stumbled afterward.

Kael caught his arm.

”You good?”

”No.”

At least he had stopped pretending.

”Can you walk?”

”Yes.”

”Then technically.”

Milo stared at him.

Kael smiled.

Milo looked offended.

”You stole that.”

”I adapt.”

Milo almost laughed.

Then the shaft below roared.

Everyone froze.

A deep vibration climbed through the stone.

Not a drake.

Not a voice.

Pressure.

The System flooded Kael’s vision.

[GEOTHERMAL EVENT DETECTED]

Rapid pressure redistribution

Temperature spike below current level

Multiple relief channels obstructed or compromised

Local stability deteriorating

This was becoming bigger than individual collapses.

Kael looked toward Galahad.

”The pressure network is failing in more than one place.”

Rask heard.

”What?”

Kael repeated it.

Rask’s face changed.

Mara swore.

Joren said nothing.

Galahad looked toward the Iron Vanguard members.

”You knew the relief routes were being altered.”

Mara answered first.

”Some were.”

”How many?”

”I don’t know.”

Rask looked at her sharply.

”Mara.”

She turned on him.

”Do you want to lie while standing over a shaft that is trying to cook us?”

Rask went silent.

Mara looked toward Galahad.

”Some lower crews sealed routes. Redirected steam. Changed drainage. Usually temporary.”

”Why?”

”For work.”

”What work?”

”Core processing. Heat control. Keeping drakes away from storage.”

That was believable.

And dangerous.

Galahad looked toward Joren.

”And exposure rooms?”

Joren’s face hardened.

Mara looked at him.

”What exposure rooms?”

There.

She did not know.

Or appeared not to.

Kael watched carefully.

Joren said, ”Not here.”

Mara stepped toward him.

”What did you do?”

The ledge suddenly felt even narrower.

Rask intervened.

”Enough.”

Mara rounded on him.

”You knew?”

”No.”

”Then stop protecting him.”

Rask’s expression twisted.

”I am protecting everyone from having this argument on a ledge.”

That was unfortunately reasonable.

Galahad agreed.

”Service chamber first.”

They moved.

No more questions.

Not yet.

The chamber appeared exactly where Iris said it would.

It was an old circular service room built around three rusted valve assemblies and a dry stone trough. Two passages left it: one east, one upward through a sloped tunnel.

Most importantly, it had walls thick enough to keep everyone away from the shaft.

The wounded went inside first.

Then the walking injured.

Then the uninjured workers.

Then fighters.

Darius and Galahad came last.

Joren tried to remain outside.

Darius looked at him.

Joren entered.

The room became crowded quickly.

More than thirty people.

Enemies.

Allies.

People who had not yet decided which they were.

Galahad stood beside the eastern passage and looked around.

”No fighting in this room.”

Rask laughed without humor. ”You think saying that makes it true?”

”No.”

Galahad looked toward Darius.

Then Sera.

Then Kael.

Then Rask’s fighters.

”I think everyone here understands what happens if thirty people start swinging swords around two litters and three injured workers.”

Nobody disagreed.

Milo lowered himself against a wall.

”Diplomacy.”

Sera sat beside him.

”You look awful.”

”Thank you.”

”I mean worse.”

”Thank you more.”

The healers immediately returned to Tovin.

Lysa remained beside Derren.

For the first time since being found, she was close enough to touch Tovin’s hand.

She did.

Carefully.

No one interrupted.

Kael stood near the room’s center.

The System appeared.

[Temporary Shelter Assessment]

Structural integrity: moderate-high

Air quality: acceptable

Immediate geothermal hazard: reduced

Occupancy: excessive

Threat environment: uncertain

That last line almost made him laugh.

Accurate.

Galahad looked toward Mara.

”You said some relief channels were sealed for work.”

”Yes.”

”Could that be causing the instability?”

She shook her head.

”Not all of it.”

”How do you know?”

”Because these tunnels have been getting hotter even where nothing was changed.”

Kael thought of the earlier drake migrations.

The altered behavior.

The Ash-King returning.

The pressure changes that started before the hatchery alarm.

The blocked routes could be worsening something already underway.

Not creating it from nothing.

Good.

Continuity.

Galahad nodded.

”Then we have at least two problems.”

Milo opened one eye.

”At least?”

”No encouragement.”

Milo closed it again.

Galahad looked toward Rask.

”First: find a route out.”

Then Joren.

”Second: you explain what ’failed exposure group’ means.”

Joren’s expression hardened.

Rask looked toward him.

So did Mara.

So did several members of the Iron Vanguard.

For the first time, Kael realized something clearly.

Whatever Joren knew—

not everyone wearing that iron insignia knew it.

And that might be more dangerous than if they all did.
