The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

Iris reached the forward hold before the first drake did.

Mara saw her first because she was standing beside the hammer-line with one hand resting against the weighted cable, waiting for a response from the route Kael’s group had taken. Iris came out of the eastern passage at a limping run, gray from head to boots, one field knife missing and the other still dark with Ash-King blood. She did not waste time explaining the fight, the corpse, or the way the entire Caldera had begun shifting beneath them.

”Get everyone ready to move,” Iris said, crossing the hold toward Mara. ”Now. Anything that cannot travel gets carried. Anything we do not need stays here.”

Rask pushed himself upright from where he had been sitting against a support post with his ribs bound beneath his armor. ”Where is Vance?”

Iris looked at him.

That pause was enough to make him straighten despite the pain.

”Alive,” she said. ”Changed.”

Mara’s hand came off the cable. ”Changed how?”

Iris glanced around the forward hold before answering. There were too many wounded people to say it carelessly. The four ventilation-station survivors rested along one wall. The two from the transfer cut were nearby. The service-pocket survivor had fallen asleep sitting upright and had been shifted onto a folded blanket. The seven people extracted from the lower gallery occupied most of the rear space, some lying down while others helped with water and bandages despite their own injuries. Davin and Eron were near the entrance with weapons ready. Veyra had returned with the injured Vanguard fighter from the Ash-King battle and was cutting away the ruined lower section of his trouser leg so she could reinforce the wrapping around the wound.

Milo lay near the center of the hold with his back against a supply crate.

His eyes were open now.

That worried Iris more than if he had been asleep.

His face had the color of old paper, and even sitting upright looked like something he was doing out of spite.

Iris looked back toward Rask. ”He took the Ash-King’s core.”

Silence moved across the hold.

Rask’s expression did not change immediately.

”What do you mean, took?”

”He ate it.”

Milo blinked.

Then looked toward Sera’s empty place near the wall as though she were somehow responsible for not being present to hear that.

”I leave people alone for one fight.”

Nobody laughed.

Milo’s humor died on its own.

Rask stepped forward. ”He consumed the core?”

”Yes.”

Mara’s face went pale.

Davin swore quietly.

Eron looked toward the eastern tunnel.

Rask asked the next question with the voice of someone who already knew the answer would be worse. ”Did it work?”

Iris nodded.

”That depends on what you call working.”

The entire hold seemed to listen now.

Iris kept her voice low enough that she was not announcing panic, but she did not soften anything. ”He is stronger. Much stronger. The core is also destroying him. He can command drakes.”

Mara stared at her.

”What?”

”Command them.”

”No.”

”Yes.”

”How many?”

”Three with him when I left. More responding deeper in the Caldera.”

Rask closed his eyes.

Not for long.

One breath.

Then he opened them and became a field leader again.

”Mara, route.”

She moved immediately.

The map came open across the nearest crate. Several old pathways had already been marked out in charcoal, some crossed through after earlier collapses, others dotted where stability remained uncertain. Mara placed one finger against the eastern maintenance line.

”This is still our best way out.”

Iris shook her head.

”Not all of it.”

Mara looked up.

”Where?”

”Lower split cracked after I passed it. Still crossable when I came through. Maybe not for long.”

Mara moved a second finger farther north. ”Then we take the furnace bypass.”

Rask frowned. ”That route is narrow.”

”It is also not directly over the new pressure line.”

”The stretch after the old lift?”

”Bad.”

”How bad?”

”Better than being buried.”

Rask accepted that.

He turned toward the hold.

”Everyone who can walk carries something or someone. Nobody carries personal equipment that slows the wounded. Water stays. Medical wraps stay. Weapons stay if you can use them. Everything else is expendable.”

One of the rescued workers looked toward a pack near his blanket.

”My tools—”

Rask looked at him.

”Can you replace them?”

The man hesitated. ”Yes.”

”Can your family replace you?”

The man left the pack.

Good.

Rask pointed toward Davin and Eron. ”You two take the fractured-leg survivor. Use the litter. Mara stays near the center because she knows the route structure. Veyra manages the people with burns and breathing trouble. Nobody runs unless Iris says the floor behind you is disappearing.”

Veyra finished tightening the wrap around the wounded Vanguard fighter’s leg and looked toward Rask. ”He cannot put weight on this.”

”I can.”

The man tried to stand.

His knee buckled immediately.

Veyra caught his shoulder before he went down.

”You can lie convincingly.”

”I was testing it.”

”You failed.”

Milo lifted one weak hand. ”I approve of her assessment.”

Veyra looked toward him. ”You are supposed to be unconscious.”

”I have received conflicting instructions.”

Rask crossed the hold.

”Milo.”

Milo looked up.

”No.”

Rask had not spoken yet.

”That is good. Saves time.”

”You cannot walk this route alone.”

”I can levitate myself.”

”No.”

”I can levitate someone else.”

”No.”

Milo sighed. ”This is becoming authoritarian.”

”You have almost no mana.”

”Technically I have mana.”

”How much?”

Milo looked away.

Rask nodded.

”Exactly.”

Iris crouched beside him. ”You can walk if somebody supports you.”

Milo looked offended.

”I am a respected mage.”

”You are a respected mage who nearly fell asleep while sitting.”

”I was thinking.”

”You were snoring.”

Milo stared at her.

Iris raised an eyebrow.

”Quietly.”

Milo pointed toward the eastern tunnel. ”I hate everyone on this expedition.”

”Good. Stand.”

It took Iris on one side and the crate on the other for Milo to get upright.

His knees shook.

He hid it badly.

Rask saw.

So did Mara.

Nobody commented.

The hammer-line struck.

Once.

Then once again.

Everyone in the hold stopped.

Mara turned.

The signal came again.

One.

Pause.

One.

Forward route.

Known group.

Kael.

Mara moved to the entrance.

Then the sound beneath the hammer-line changed.

Scraping.

Heavy.

More than boots.

Rask looked toward Iris.

She nodded.

”They’re here.”

The first person through the passage was Kael.

He looked worse than Iris remembered, which was impressive considering she had seen him less than fifteen minutes earlier. He had no sword. Blood and ash covered his armor. One side of his face carried fresh heat reddening, and his left leg dragged slightly whenever he forgot to compensate. He saw the hold, the stretchers, the people already preparing to move, and relief crossed his face when he realized Iris had arrived ahead of him.

Then Darius came through.

The hold changed.

Several people straightened instinctively despite having no reason to.

The Commander of the Black Dragon looked like someone had taken a battlefield and strapped the surviving pieces of it together. His left shoulder barely moved. Blood had soaked through the wrap around his thigh. One hand carried his sword because the other could not. He walked under his own power anyway.

Galahad followed.

Sera came next, her bow visibly unstrung and the quiver on her back empty.

Milo saw that.

His expression changed.

Not surprise.

Understanding.

Sera saw him too.

For half a second, the exhaustion left both faces.

Milo looked at the empty quiver.

Then at her.

”You’re alive.”

Sera stopped near him.

”So are you.”

”Barely.”

”Same.”

Milo’s gaze dropped to the broken bowstring.

Then returned to her face.

”You ran out.”

Sera held his eyes.

”Yes.”

That one word contained more than anyone else in the room understood.

Milo smiled.

Not his usual crooked joke.

Something smaller.

”And?”

Sera opened her right hand.

A few pale Mana Motes appeared around her fingers.

Only three.

They flickered.

Vanished.

Milo stared.

Sera’s expression remained dry.

”Don’t.”

His smile widened.

”You did.”

”I said don’t.”

”You absolutely did.”

”Milo.”

He tried to laugh.

The laugh became a cough because his body had no interest in supporting joy properly.

Sera crouched beside him.

”Idiot.”

”Renewable.”

Her face finally broke.

Only a little.

Then claws scraped stone in the passage behind Galahad.

Every wounded person in the forward hold looked toward the entrance.

Theron Vance emerged.

Rask did not breathe for several seconds.

Kael watched him.

Fifteen years.

Rask had said it himself.

He had stood with the Iron Vanguard almost as long as Theron had built it. They had taken people no one else wanted. Given them weapons, food, training, somewhere to stand.

Theron looked nothing like the man Rask had sent deeper into the Caldera.

Blood covered his mouth.

Dark branching veins showed beneath his skin from wrist to throat. One eye had a thin line of blood running from the corner, already drying across his cheek. He walked on the injured hip because the Draconic Core was forcing his body to move through damage rather than repairing it.

Then the first drake appeared behind him.

Weapons came up everywhere.

Davin lowered one end of the litter and drew steel.

Eron moved in front of two wounded survivors.

Mara stepped backward.

Veyra grabbed the spear she had been using as a walking support.

Milo tried to raise one hand.

Nothing happened.

Not enough mana.

Sera stepped in front of him.

Theron stopped at the entrance.

The drake stopped with him.

A second appeared behind it.

Then the third.

Rask walked forward.

No weapon.

Just himself.

”Keep them out.”

Theron looked at him.

”Rask.”

”Iris told us.”

Vance’s face tightened.

”She runs fast.”

”She does.”

Rask stopped five yards away.

”You took the core.”

”Yes.”

”You ate it.”

”Yes.”

Milo murmured behind them, ”Still difficult to hear twice.”

Sera elbowed him lightly.

Theron looked past Rask at the people preparing to evacuate.

His people.

Some saw him and relaxed.

Others did not.

The wounded Vanguard fighter Veyra had dragged back from the battle stared at him from the ground.

”Commander?”

Theron looked toward him.

”You’re alive.”

”Unfortunately.”

Vance almost smiled.

The fighter looked at the drakes.

Then at the veins along Theron’s neck.

”What did you do?”

Theron did not answer immediately.

That silence moved through the hold.

Rask did.

”He did what we came here for.”

Several Vanguard survivors looked toward him.

Theron’s eyes narrowed.

Rask kept facing them.

”We came to the Caldera because he wanted a core.”

Theron’s voice hardened.

”Rask.”

”Don’t.”

The word came out without fear.

The drake behind Theron raised its head.

Rask saw.

Everyone did.

Theron turned slightly.

”Stay.”

The drake froze.

Rask looked from the creature back to the man he had followed for fifteen years.

”That.”

Theron’s jaw tightened.

”What?”

”You don’t even notice anymore.”

”Notice what?”

”They move when you get angry.”

”I control them.”

”No.”

Rask shook his head.

”You order them. That is not the same thing.”

Theron stared.

Rask stepped closer.

The drake growled.

Theron’s eyes hardened.

”Rask.”

”What?”

”Do not make this into something it isn’t.”

Rask laughed once.

Pain immediately pulled at his ribs.

He pressed one arm against his side.

”What is it, then?”

”A way out.”

Vance pointed toward the drakes.

”They know the Caldera. They can move stone. They can protect the wounded. They can keep other drakes away.”

Rask looked at the nearest creature.

”They nearly killed half of us getting here.”

”Because they were wild.”

”And now?”

”Now they listen.”

Rask studied him.

”That is exactly what frightens me.”

Theron’s expression became tired.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

”You of all people.”

”Yes.”

Rask’s answer came immediately.

”Me of all people.”

The hold went quieter.

Rask moved closer until he was within two yards of Vance.

”You gave us somewhere to stand.”

Theron’s face changed.

There.

History.

Rask continued. ”You remember that?”

”Yes.”

”You found me with no company willing to take me because I had the wrong papers and the wrong history.”

Theron said nothing.

”You found Kel after half the companies east of here decided he was more trouble than his sword was worth. Mara came because nobody cared what she knew until a tunnel collapsed and they needed somebody who understood supports. Davin. Eron. Joren. Half the people who followed you came because somebody else decided they did not matter.”

Theron’s throat moved.

Rask pointed toward the drakes.

”You gave us somewhere to stand because nobody else would.”

”I know.”

”Then do not become the man who decides everything standing near him has to kneel.”

The nearest drake lowered its body.

Not because Theron ordered it.

Because the anger in him surged.

Kael saw the realization hit Theron.

His face went still.

The dark veins along his throat pulsed brighter.

The drake’s claws spread.

Rask did not move.

Theron closed his eyes.

Breathed.

Once.

Twice.

”Stay.”

The drake stopped lowering.

”Back.”

It retreated one step.

Then another.

The veins dimmed.

Theron opened his eyes.

For the first time since taking the core, he looked afraid.

Not of Kael.

Of himself.

It lasted perhaps one second.

Then he buried it.

”We do not have time for this.”

Mara stepped forward from the map.

”For once, that part is true.”

Everyone looked toward her.

She tapped the hammer-line.

”Lower split is failing.”

Kael moved closer.

”How long?”

Mara shook her head.

”No honest number.”

Good answer.

She pointed toward the map.

”The old furnace bypass is still the best route. But the choke point near the lift shaft has partially collapsed.”

”How much?”

”Enough that a litter cannot pass cleanly.”

Galahad looked toward the wounded.

”Can we clear it?”

”By hand? Maybe. Slowly.”

Theron looked at the drakes.

Mara saw.

Her expression changed.

”No.”

Vance stared at her.

”You just said we need stone moved.”

”I said the route is partially collapsed.”

”And I have three creatures that can move more stone in a minute than ten of us can move in an hour.”

Mara hated that because it was true.

Kael could see it.

Galahad saw too.

”We use them outside the wounded group.”

Kael looked toward him.

Galahad pointed at Theron.

”They clear ahead. They stay at least one turn beyond everyone else. No drake enters the convoy.”

Theron nodded.

”Fine.”

Kael stared.

Theron noticed.

”What?”

”You agreed quickly.”

”Do you want me to argue?”

”No.”

”Then enjoy it.”

Mara pointed toward the route.

”I go with the clearing group.”

Rask shook his head.

”You stay with the wounded.”

”I know the support layout.”

”So do I.”

”Not as well.”

Theron looked toward her.

”I will go.”

Mara’s expression hardened.

”You know how to command monsters. You do not know which beam keeps a roof up.”

That ended that.

Galahad assigned positions.

Mara would go forward with Theron but remain behind the drakes, close enough to tell him which debris could safely be moved and which should not be touched. Rask remained at the front edge of the wounded convoy. Davin and Eron handled the primary litter. Veyra took the burn survivors and anyone with respiratory trouble. Iris would scout the route farther ahead and return repeatedly rather than disappear completely.

Kael and Darius would stay near the middle because both were too injured to function as scouts and too important to leave at the very rear.

Galahad took rear command.

Sera and Milo looked at him together when he reached them.

”No.”

Milo sighed.

”Again, I have said nothing.”

”You were thinking about casting.”

”I am always thinking about casting.”

”That is not reassuring.”

Milo looked toward the drakes.

”I can still use a Force Plane.”

”One?”

”Maybe.”

”How many after that?”

Milo looked away.

Galahad nodded.

”You get one if somebody dies without it.”

”That is extremely restrictive.”

”Yes.”

Sera leaned toward Milo.

”I like him.”

”I used to.”

She helped him stand.

Milo placed one arm across her shoulders.

Sera stiffened.

”You are heavier than you look.”

”I am mostly intelligence.”

”That does not weigh anything.”

”Cruel.”

They moved.

The forward hold emptied in stages rather than chaos.

That mattered.

The people who could walk went first with Iris’s marks. The least mobile followed on litters and improvised supports. Supplies were cut down to what mattered. Water. Wraps. A few tools. Rope. Weapons.

Everything else stayed.

Mara looked back once at the hammer-line station she had used to communicate through the lower Caldera.

Then cut the tension cord.

Kael saw.

”Why?”

”So nobody follows the signal assuming this remains a safe hold.”

Good.

Finish the function.

Abandon the structure.

They entered the furnace bypass.

Theron and the three drakes stayed ahead.

Far ahead.

The first time claws disappeared around the bend, several rescued workers visibly relaxed.

Rask noticed.

Theron probably would have too if he had been looking backward.

He was not.

The Draconic Core had given him something new to listen to.

Kael saw it each time Theron’s head turned toward a tunnel before a distant scrape reached anyone else.

More drakes.

Always more.

They did not all approach.

Some stayed where they were.

Some answered with distant roars.

Others began moving parallel through unseen passages.

Kael’s System tracked only fragments.

[Multiple draconic signatures detected.]

[Movement pattern: convergent.]

[Dominion correlation probable.]

[Exact count unavailable.]

That was enough.

The furnace bypass narrowed after the first hundred yards.

Heat rose through old grates beneath the path.

The original machinery had been stripped decades earlier, leaving only stone channels, rusted support housings, and a shaft descending into darkness.

The collapse appeared beyond the next turn.

Mara stopped.

The drakes stopped with Theron.

A mound of broken basalt and two fallen support beams filled most of the passage.

The ceiling above had cracked but not dropped.

Mara looked upward first.

Then at the debris.

”Do not touch the left beam.”

Theron looked at the drake nearest him.

”Move the rock.”

Mara grabbed his arm.

”No.”

The drake froze.

Theron looked down at her hand.

Mara released him.

”The center rocks. Only those. If it pulls the left beam, we lose the ceiling.”

Theron looked toward the drake.

Then the center of the obstruction.

”Those.”

The drake approached.

It bit one stone.

Pulled.

Basalt scraped across the ground.

The passage shook.

Everyone behind them tensed.

Mara watched the ceiling.

”Again.”

Theron gestured.

The drake moved another stone.

Then another.

Useful.

Terrifyingly useful.

The second drake joined.

Within a minute, a gap appeared wide enough for a person.

Within three, wide enough for a litter.

Mara pointed toward a larger slab still blocking part of the floor.

”That one stays.”

Theron frowned.

”It is in the way.”

”It is supporting the right wall.”

”I can have them move it carefully.”

”No.”

Theron looked toward the slab.

Mara stepped between him and the drake.

”No.”

The creature growled.

Mara looked at it.

Then Theron.

”If you make that thing move the slab, I will personally hit you with the nearest piece of tunnel.”

Milo’s voice came from farther back.

”I like her too.”

Sera said, ”You like anyone threatening other people.”

”Not anyone.”

Theron almost smiled.

Then nodded.

”The slab stays.”

The convoy began crossing.

One at a time.

Mara remained near the unstable support, touching the wall occasionally as if she could feel its mood through stone.

The first litter passed.

Then the burn survivor.

Then two walking wounded.

Rask moved with them, counting.

Veyra stayed close enough to adjust cloths over mouths when geothermal gas drifted through cracks.

Kael and Darius entered the gap together.

The ceiling shifted.

A small stone dropped.

Mara looked up.

”Faster.”

Not panic.

Instruction.

They moved.

Sera and Milo approached next.

Milo had worsened.

The effort of walking, even with Sera supporting him, had drained what little reserve he possessed. His feet dragged now.

Sera looked at the gap.

Then him.

”You can make that?”

”Yes.”

”Actual answer.”

Milo stared.

”No.”

Good.

Sera turned.

”Rask.”

Rask came back.

Milo looked offended.

”Traitor.”

Sera ignored him.

Between them, they got Milo through.

His boot caught on the supporting slab Mara had told them not to move.

He stumbled.

The weakened section of ceiling cracked.

Everyone looked up.

A piece of basalt the size of a shield broke loose directly above the litter behind them.

Milo raised one hand.

Galahad shouted, ”MILO, NO!”

Too late.

Milo cast.

Not Barrier Arc.

Too expensive.

Not Vector Lattice.

Impossible.

A single Force Plane formed above the litter.

Invisible except for the distortion in the ash.

The falling stone hit.

Its direction changed.

Only slightly.

Enough.

Instead of landing across the injured man’s chest, the slab struck the floor beside the litter and shattered.

Milo dropped.

Sera barely caught him.

His eyes rolled halfway closed.

Galahad reached him.

”I said one.”

Milo’s lips moved.

”That was one.”

Then he went limp.

Sera swore.

Kael moved back.

Milo was breathing.

Shallow.

Still breathing.

The System could not assess him directly the way it assessed Kael, but Kael did not need it.

Critically depleted had become beyond critically depleted.

Galahad looked toward the litter.

The injured man Milo had saved stared at him from the ground.

No speech.

No thanks.

Milo would not have heard.

Rask and Sera lifted him between them.

They kept moving.

The last wounded crossed.

Then Galahad.

Then Iris returned from farther ahead at a run.

”Route open for another two hundred yards. After that, upper junction split. Right route blocked. Left route intact but narrow.”

Mara nodded.

”Left.”

Iris looked past everyone.

”More drakes.”

Kael felt the group tighten.

”How many?”

”I saw four.”

Theron turned.

”Five.”

Iris looked at him.

Vance pointed toward the wall.

”One above.”

A scrape came from the ceiling tunnel.

Everyone heard it after he did.

Theron closed his eyes.

The dark veins along his throat brightened.

The three drakes around him lifted their heads.

Then something answered from the side passage.

A roar.

Another.

Another.

The wounded people in the convoy began looking around.

Fear spread faster than explanation.

Galahad raised his voice.

”Keep moving. Do not bunch.”

Theron opened his eyes.

”I can stop them.”

Kael looked at him.

”All of them?”

Vance did not answer.

That was answer enough.

The first new drake emerged from the upper tunnel.

It crawled down the wall almost vertically.

Mara backed away.

One of Theron’s three controlled drakes growled.

The newcomer answered.

The sound became a challenge.

Theron lifted one hand.

”Down.”

The newcomer stopped.

Its claws dug into the wall.

It did not kneel.

Wrong position.

It clung.

Theron’s face tightened.

”Stay.”

The drake froze.

Good.

Then a second drake appeared from the lower passage.

A third behind it.

The third carried a scar along one flank.

None attacked.

They looked at Theron.

Vance breathed.

The Dominion spread.

Kael felt nothing directly.

The drakes did.

One by one, their heads lowered.

The convoy kept moving behind them.

Useful.

Again.

That was the problem.

Theron was right about what this power could do.

A normal drake encounter would have trapped the convoy.

Could have killed wounded people.

Instead the creatures knelt.

Rask stopped beside Kael.

He watched Theron.

”Now you see why people will follow him.”

Kael looked toward him.

Rask continued quietly. ”He can stand in front of something impossible and make it useful.”

”That does not make him safe.”

”I know.”

Rask’s face tightened.

”That is the part that hurts.”

Ahead, Theron commanded the new drakes away from the convoy.

”Back.”

They moved.

All except one.

The scarred drake stayed.

Its nostrils flared.

The wounded fighter on Davin and Eron’s litter had started bleeding through the wrap again.

The drake smelled it.

Its head turned.

Theron saw.

”Back.”

The drake did not.

Its body lowered.

Predatory.

The injured man saw.

His face went white.

Davin tightened his grip on the litter.

Eron drew his sword with one hand.

Theron’s voice hardened.

”Back.”

The drake took one step toward the wounded.

Dark veins climbed higher along Theron’s jaw.

”BACK.”

The command struck.

The drake stopped.

Its muscles locked.

Then something inside Theron surged.

Kael’s System flashed.

[Draconic Dominion output spike.]

[Host cardiovascular overload.]

[Warning.]

The scarred drake slammed to the ground.

Hard.

Too hard.

Its jaw struck stone.

One tooth broke.

Blood appeared at its mouth.

The creature whimpered.

Not growled.

Whimpered.

Theron swayed.

Blood ran from his nose.

Rask stared at the drake.

Then at Vance.

Theron wiped his nose.

”Problem solved.”

Rask’s face changed.

”No.”

Vance looked toward him.

Rask stepped closer.

”That is not solved.”

”It was going after the wounded.”

”So you stopped it.”

”Yes.”

”You did more than stop it.”

Theron looked toward the drake.

The creature remained pressed against the ground, shaking.

”I needed it controlled.”

”You needed it away.”

”The difference does not matter.”

Rask’s answer came quietly.

”It does to me.”

Theron’s eyes narrowed.

The other drakes reacted.

Galahad stepped between them before either man could continue.

”Not here.”

Rask looked at him.

Galahad pointed toward the wounded convoy still moving through the passage.

”You can decide what that means after everyone reaches daylight.”

Rask breathed.

Then nodded.

Theron said nothing.

The scarred drake remained on the ground until Vance looked at it again.

”Stay.”

It stayed.

He turned away.

The party continued.

The farther they moved from the forward hold, the more unstable the Caldera became.

Steam hissed through cracks that had been dry on the descent.

An old wall had split enough to expose glowing rock beyond.

One support beam had bowed under pressure.

The hammer-line did not run this far, so Mara switched from signal knowledge to memory.

Left at the split.

Up the old ore ramp.

Across the maintenance bridge.

Then east toward the charcoal route.

A path home.

If it remained.

At the upper junction, they found the right route completely gone.

Not blocked.

Gone.

Half the passage had fallen into a deep fissure filled with red-orange glow.

Heat rolled upward.

Mara looked into it for one second.

”Left.”

Nobody argued.

The left route narrowed almost immediately.

One wounded person at a time.

The drakes could not pass.

Theron stopped.

The three nearest controlled creatures stopped behind him.

Kael turned.

”There.”

Theron looked toward the opening.

Too narrow.

The drakes would have to stay.

For the first time, Kael felt relief.

Then Theron looked upward.

The tunnel wall above the narrow passage sloped into an older ventilation cut.

He could feel something Kael could not.

Vance pointed.

”They can go around.”

Kael stared.

”Do they need to?”

Theron’s expression hardened.

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”Because more are coming.”

A distant roar echoed.

Then several.

Theron looked toward the dark.

”They are following the Dominion.”

There it was.

The power was not merely letting him command nearby drakes.

It was drawing them.

Kael opened the System.

[Draconic movement convergence increasing.]

[Dominion center: Theron Vance.]

[Estimated behavioral attraction: probable.]

[Host control over total responding population: unverified.]

Kael showed none of the text.

His face was enough.

Darius looked at him.

”What?”

”The more he uses it, the more they come.”

Theron looked toward him.

”That means more answer.”

”No. It means more arrive.”

Vance’s jaw tightened.

”You think I cannot hold them.”

”I think you have no idea.”

The veins along Theron’s face pulsed.

Darius stepped forward carefully.

Not close enough to trigger the same challenge response.

”Kael is correct.”

Theron’s eyes shifted toward him.

Darius continued. ”Three were simple. Five required effort. One resisting drake made you bleed.”

”I am still standing.”

”Your body is failing.”

”So is yours.”

Darius accepted that.

”Yes.”

Theron almost seemed thrown by the answer.

Darius looked toward the narrow route.

”The difference is I am not pretending injury becomes strength because I can ignore it.”

Something in Theron changed.

The drakes behind him lifted their heads.

Kael saw.

Rask saw.

Theron closed his eyes.

Again.

Controlled his breathing.

The drakes settled.

Better.

He could learn.

That was dangerous too.

When Theron opened his eyes, he looked toward the ventilation cut.

”Go.”

The first drake climbed.

Then the second.

Then the third.

They disappeared into the upper route.

Kael frowned.

”You sent them ahead?”

”Around.”

”To where?”

”Beyond the narrow passage.”

Kael’s stomach tightened.

Theron looked at him.

”They will stay away from the wounded.”

”You said that before.”

”And I stopped the one that did not.”

Rask looked toward the blood still on the scarred drake’s mouth where its tooth had broken under Dominion pressure.

Nobody answered.

They entered the narrow passage.

The wounded first.

Mara.

Veyra.

Davin and Eron.

Rask and Sera carrying Milo.

Kael next.

Darius behind him.

Galahad.

Theron last.

The passage squeezed down to shoulder width near the middle.

Kael turned sideways.

His burned calf dragged.

The wall scraped his armor.

Ahead, Sera struggled to support Milo without enough room for Rask to stay beside her.

Milo had regained consciousness.

Barely.

His head rested against the stone.

He looked at the passage.

Then at Sera.

”This is undignified.”

”You passed out.”

”Strategic.”

”You drooled.”

Milo’s eyes opened wider.

”You are lying.”

Sera almost smiled.

”Maybe.”

He looked toward the empty quiver.

Then the broken bow.

His expression softened.

”You really did it.”

Sera’s face changed.

The humor disappeared.

”I ran out.”

”I know.”

”I reached back.”

Milo listened.

”There was nothing.”

He did not interrupt.

Sera shifted his weight higher against her shoulder.

”For a second, I was there again.”

Northern hills.

Last arrow.

Miss.

Empty quiver.

Milo knew.

Sera continued. ”Then I stopped looking in the quiver.”

Milo smiled.

”That sounds inconveniently profound.”

She snorted.

”I hate you.”

”Renewable.”

Behind them, stone cracked.

Everyone stopped.

Theron looked back.

The narrow passage shuddered.

The entrance behind him partially collapsed.

A burst of ash rushed through.

Galahad shoved forward.

”MOVE.”

They moved.

The collapse followed.

Not chasing.

Settling.

One section at a time.

Theron came through the narrowest point as stone fell behind him.

A slab struck his back.

Hard enough that any normal injured man would have gone down.

Theron stumbled.

Then straightened.

The dark veins along his shoulders glowed through torn clothing.

Kael saw.

So did Darius.

Theron smiled.

”Still standing.”

Darius’s answer came cold.

”For now.”

They reached the far side.

The three drakes were waiting.

All kneeling.

Theron had told the truth.

They had gone around.

They had not approached the wounded.

That earned him nothing from Kael.

It earned him something from Rask.

Not trust.

Recognition.

Theron saw.

”Still think I cannot control them?”

Rask looked toward the creatures.

Then toward the blood running from Theron’s nose and eye.

”I think you can.”

Vance waited.

Rask continued.

”I think that is the problem.”

Theron’s face hardened.

Before he could answer, the Caldera moved.

Not trembled.

Moved.

The entire passage rolled beneath them.

People fell.

The litters hit stone.

One drake slammed a claw into the floor.

Another spread its wings for balance.

The ceiling cracked.

Mara looked up.

Her face went pale.

”RUN.”

No one asked why.

They ran.

Or limped.

Or carried.

Or dragged.

The passage behind them began collapsing in sections.

Stone hit stone with deafening impacts.

Ash filled the route.

Veyra pulled the burn survivor forward.

Davin and Eron lifted the litter higher.

Rask carried more of Milo’s weight.

Sera stayed on the other side.

Kael moved beside Darius, ready to catch him if the injured leg failed.

Galahad brought the rear.

Theron turned toward the drakes.

”Hold.”

Kael looked back.

The first creature stopped beneath a section of ceiling that had begun dropping.

”No!”

Theron raised his hand.

The drake planted its forelegs.

Stone struck its back.

The creature roared.

The collapse slowed.

Not stopped.

Slowed.

Theron pointed toward the next support.

The second drake moved beneath it.

”Hold.”

It braced.

The third joined.

Three drakes became living supports beneath a failing section of volcanic ceiling.

Kael stared.

The creatures screamed under the weight.

Theron’s face tightened with concentration.

”MOVE!”

This time it was his command to the people.

Galahad understood.

”GO!”

The convoy passed beneath the temporarily supported section.

One litter.

Then another.

The rescued workers.

The wounded Vanguard fighter.

Veyra.

Davin.

Eron.

Mara.

Rask.

Sera.

Milo.

Kael reached the far side.

He looked back.

One drake’s front leg bent.

The animal screamed.

Theron did not release it.

Kael felt something ugly twist inside him.

”Theron.”

”Not yet.”

”It’s breaking.”

”Not yet.”

Darius crossed.

Galahad crossed.

Theron remained on the other side.

The ceiling dropped another inch.

The first drake’s leg snapped.

The sound carried even through the collapse.

Kael flinched.

Rask stared.

Theron’s face did not.

Or maybe it did.

Something.

Pain?

Regret?

Kael could not tell.

The last wounded person cleared the danger zone.

Theron shouted, ”MOVE!”

The drakes tried.

Two escaped.

The one with the broken leg did not.

Its body shifted.

The ceiling came down.

Stone swallowed it.

Theron jumped.

The blast of ash hit his back and threw him across the line.

Darius caught him with one hand.

Both men nearly fell.

The collapse sealed the passage behind them.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Theron stared at the new wall of broken stone.

The drake beneath it made no sound.

Rask walked toward him.

”You killed it.”

Theron looked back.

”It saved twenty people.”

”You forced it to.”

”Yes.”

The answer came without hesitation.

Rask’s face tightened.

Theron pointed toward the convoy.

”They are alive.”

Rask stared at him.

”You think that answers everything.”

”No.”

”Then what does it answer?”

Theron looked toward the collapsed passage.

”That if I had to choose again, I would make the same choice.”

Rask breathed once.

His hand closed.

Then opened.

He looked toward the wounded people.

Kael could see the conflict in him.

The drake was a monster.

The people were alive.

Theron’s choice had worked.

And still something about it had crossed a line Rask could feel even if he could not yet name it cleanly.

Galahad stepped closer.

”We move.”

Rask did not look away from Theron.

After several seconds, he nodded.

They moved.

The route climbed.

The air became cooler.

Not clean yet.

But less volcanic.

That was the first sign they were truly getting higher.

Mara recognized the next marker.

”Charcoal maintenance level.”

Relief moved through the convoy.

Not safety.

Closer.

Then Theron stopped.

Again.

Kael turned.

Vance stared into the wall.

No.

Beyond it.

The two surviving controlled drakes raised their heads.

A roar sounded below.

Then another.

Five.

Ten.

Too many to count individually.

Theron’s expression changed.

The blood from his left eye had returned.

His breathing became heavier.

The dark veins beneath his neck pulsed.

Kael’s System opened.

[Dominion response population increasing.]

[Host synchronization increasing.]

[Host structural failure increasing.]

[Warning: current trend unsustainable.]

Kael looked toward him.

”How many?”

Theron did not answer at first.

Rask stopped beside Kael.

Darius leaned on his sword.

Sera lowered Milo carefully onto a rock ledge.

Mara looked back toward the route.

Theron closed his eyes.

The roars continued.

Near.

Far.

Above.

Below.

A whole hierarchy in motion because the old king was dead and something wearing a human body had taken its command.

Theron opened his eyes.

For several seconds, the pupils were no longer human.

Tiny pale points sat inside darkened irises.

Rask saw.

His face changed.

”Theron.”

Vance looked at him.

The pale points remained.

Rask stepped forward.

”What is my name?”

Everyone went still.

Theron frowned.

”What?”

”My name.”

”Rask.”

”Where did you find me?”

Theron’s expression hardened.

”This is stupid.”

”Answer.”

A roar sounded below.

The drakes stirred.

Theron looked toward the tunnel.

Rask stepped into his line of sight.

”Where?”

Theron stared at him.

Then something human returned to his face.

”South road outside Kestrel Ford.”

Rask breathed.

”What did I steal?”

Theron almost smiled.

”My boots.”

”You had two pairs.”

”I had one after you.”

Rask’s shoulders lowered slightly.

Good.

Still there.

Theron looked at him.

”What are you doing?”

”Checking.”

”For what?”

”That you are still the man I followed.”

Silence settled between them.

Theron’s smile vanished.

Rask continued more quietly. ”You gave me somewhere to stand, Vance. I meant what I said. Do not make me regret standing there.”

Theron looked toward the two drakes beside him.

Then toward the tunnel filled with answering roars.

The pale points in his eyes faded.

For now.

”I won’t.”

Rask did not say he believed him.

Kael did not either.

Another tremor moved through the upper route.

Mara pointed east.

”Charcoal road is that way. If the upper bridge is intact, we can reach the surface route.”

Galahad looked at everyone.

”Then that is where we go.”

The convoy moved again.

Kael stayed beside Darius.

Rask stayed closer to Theron now.

Not as follower.

Not exactly.

Watcher.

Sera and Mara carried Milo between them while Veyra managed the wounded line.

Iris ranged ahead and returned twice with route reports.

The two surviving controlled drakes remained behind Theron.

More voices followed beneath the mountain.

The core inside Theron kept growing stronger.

So did the thing trying to tear him apart from within.

And Kael understood that the next fight would not begin simply because Theron decided to attack.

It might begin because the man reached the point where power, pain, instinct, loyalty, and control became impossible to separate.

The forward hold was behind them.

The surface was ahead.

And somewhere between the two, the Iron Vanguard had begun deciding whether the man who gave them somewhere to stand was still someone they could follow.
