The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

The first drake lowered its head until the underside of its jaw nearly touched the ash-covered stone.

The second followed more slowly. Its foreclaws remained spread, shoulders tense, and a low vibration rolled somewhere inside its chest as though instinct and obedience were fighting over the same body. The third stood farther back, smaller than the others but still large enough that its shoulders reached above Kael’s head. It stared at Theron Vance with both eyes fixed and unblinking, then folded its limbs beneath itself in a posture Kael had never seen from any drake they had encountered in the Caldera.

No one moved.

Theron stood beside the Ash-King’s corpse with blood from the shattered core still smeared across his mouth and chin. His injured hip remained visibly wrong beneath torn armor. It had not healed. Kael could see that much even without the System. The joint sat slightly out of alignment, and when Theron shifted his weight, the leg should have collapsed under him.

It did not.

Dark red-black lines crawled beneath the skin along Theron’s neck, pulsing faintly whenever his heart beat. A second pulse appeared a fraction later, dimmer and somehow wrong, as though the Draconic Core carried its own rhythm and had not yet accepted that it was supposed to belong to a human body.

The System kept warning him.

[Foreign Draconic Core integration ongoing.]

[Host compatibility: critically low.]

[Physical output increasing.]

[Tissue damage increasing.]

[Circulatory overload increasing.]

[Neurological adaptation unresolved.]

[Draconic Dominion signature active.]

Kael stared at the last line.

Active.

Not possible.

Not potential.

Active.

Theron lifted one hand.

The nearest drake raised its head immediately.

Vance looked at it.

Not at anyone else.

At the drake.

”Stay.”

The word came quietly.

The drake stopped moving.

Kael’s skin prickled.

Theron’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

Wonder.

Not surprise exactly. He had expected something from the Ash-King’s core. He had risked too much, buried too many people, and forced his own body past reason because he believed the core contained something worth having.

But expectation was different from proof.

Vance moved his hand to the right.

The drake’s head followed.

Then the entire creature shifted one step in that direction.

Theron’s breathing slowed.

”Again.”

The drake moved.

Sera stood several paces behind Kael with the broken bow still in her hand. Its string hung loose where she had snapped it during the Ash-King fight. Her quiver lay flat against her back, empty, and the hand she had used to Mana-Weave trembled even while hanging at her side.

”That’s not fear,” she said.

Nobody looked away from Theron.

Kael answered, ”No.”

The second drake growled.

Theron turned toward it.

The creature stiffened.

Its shoulders rose.

For one moment, it looked ready to lunge.

Then Vance’s expression hardened.

”Down.”

The drake resisted.

Its claws scraped backward across basalt.

The sound was slow and ugly, four furrows cutting through ash and stone as the creature fought whatever pressure Theron had placed inside it.

Vance’s face changed.

Not anger.

Concentration.

The dark lines beneath his neck brightened.

”Down.”

The second command hit differently.

Kael felt it.

Not like Aura Pressure.

Not like mana.

Something older.

More instinctive.

The drake’s forelegs bent.

Its claws kept dragging.

The creature released a strained snarl and tried to force itself upright again.

Theron stared at it.

The drake dropped.

Its chest struck the ground.

Sera’s mouth tightened.

Iris, standing to Kael’s left with one field knife remaining, watched the trenches the drake’s claws had carved through the stone.

”It did not want to.”

Theron looked toward her.

”No.”

That answer bothered Kael more than a denial would have.

Theron knew.

He had felt the resistance.

And he had pushed anyway.

Kael stepped forward.

Darius’s good hand caught the back of his armor before he completed the second step.

”Not yet.”

Kael looked at him.

Darius’s face had gone pale under ash and dried blood. His injured thigh had started bleeding again after standing. One shoulder remained nearly useless, but the sword in his good hand stayed level.

”He is learning,” Kael said.

”So are we.”

That was fair.

Theron looked at the three drakes.

Then at his own hand.

His fingers trembled.

He closed them.

The tremor stopped.

Not because his body recovered.

Because something stronger forced it to obey.

Galahad saw the same thing.

”You should sit.”

Theron gave him a tired smile.

”You have said that several times.”

”And you keep proving me right.”

Vance looked toward the drakes.

”They listen.”

Galahad’s expression remained flat.

”So did your people.”

The smile disappeared.

The air between them changed.

Theron turned slowly.

Galahad did not move.

”You want to make that comparison?”

”I did not make it.”

”Yes, you did.”

”No.” Galahad nodded toward the drake still flattened against the stone, claws embedded in the grooves it had carved resisting him. ”You did.”

Theron looked at the animal.

For a moment, something uncertain passed through his face.

Then he shook his head.

”They are drakes.”

Kael stepped forward again.

This time Darius did not stop him.

”That makes it different?”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

Theron’s eyes moved toward him. ”Because if that creature gets hungry near a village, it eats somebody.”

”So control it.”

”That is what I am doing.”

”No. You are forcing it.”

Theron stared.

Kael continued before Galahad could decide the conversation had become too philosophical for a collapsing mountain.

”You told me nobody should have the right to put your people on their knees.”

Theron’s expression hardened.

Kael nodded toward the drake.

”It tried to stand.”

”That thing is not my people.”

”I know.”

”Then stop pretending this is the same.”

”I am not.”

Theron took one step forward.

The injured hip should have folded.

Instead the muscles around it tightened unnaturally.

Kael heard something crack.

Not stone.

Theron stopped.

His face did not change.

The System did.

[Musculoskeletal stress increased.]

[Existing pelvic trauma aggravated.]

[Draconic mana compensating for mechanical failure.]

Kael understood immediately.

The core was not healing Theron.

It was overriding the body’s objections.

Like ordering another drake down.

Theron’s own body had become the first thing his new power was forcing to obey.

”You’re breaking yourself.”

Vance looked at him.

”So?”

That answer came too easily.

Kael hated it.

Theron moved his hand again.

The first drake rose.

The second stayed down.

The third turned toward the nearest tunnel.

Vance looked at them.

”You think this is domination because you have never had to build power outside permission.”

Kael’s jaw tightened.

Theron continued, voice rougher now. ”You were born with a House. Born with a name that opens gates. Born with an Emperor for a father. You can decide tomorrow that Blackwood needs a Guild, an army, a road, a school, and the argument is whether you are allowed to spend money on it.”

Kael said nothing.

Not because Theron was entirely right.

Because some of it was.

Vance pointed toward himself.

”I build a company, and a governor decides whether it counts. I gather fighters, and suddenly I am a threat. I train people no noble House wants, and the Guild decides what rank of work we deserve. We become strong enough to survive without begging, and somebody always appears with a law explaining why we need permission.”

Galahad’s voice was quieter now.

”That does happen.”

Kael looked toward him.

Galahad shrugged with one shoulder.

”Mercenary companies. Guild parties. Free companies. Local militias. Everyone loves useful armed people until useful becomes independent.”

Theron looked almost vindicated.

Galahad continued, ”That does not make everything you did afterward correct.”

Theron’s eyes hardened again.

”There.”

Galahad nodded.

”There.”

Kael looked at the drake.

It remained on the ground.

Still resisting.

Still obeying.

”You hate people deciding whether you are allowed to stand,” Kael said. ”So the first thing you do with power nobody can take is decide who kneels.”

Theron looked toward the drake.

The creature’s claws scraped stone once.

Kael watched his face.

For a second, Theron almost released it.

Then a deeper tremor moved through the Caldera.

The dead Ash-King shifted as the ground under its weight settled.

A fissure near the corpse widened.

Red light appeared beneath the crack.

All three drakes reacted immediately.

The first snapped its head toward the heat.

The third backed away.

The second tried to rise.

Theron lifted one hand.

All three froze.

That ended whatever hesitation had been forming.

Vance looked toward the widening fissure.

”We leave.”

Galahad let out one breath through his nose.

”At last.”

”With them.”

The relief died.

Kael shook his head.

”No.”

Theron looked toward him.

”They are coming.”

”No.”

”You do not command them.”

”And neither do you.”

Vance laughed.

The sound had changed.

Not dramatically.

A rougher vibration lived underneath it now, too low for a human chest.

One of the drakes raised its head when Theron laughed.

Kael noticed.

So did Darius.

Theron gestured toward the tunnels.

”These creatures know this place better than we do. They can clear unstable routes. They can carry wounded. They can kill anything between us and the forward hold.”

”They can also kill everyone at the forward hold.”

”They will not.”

”You do not know that.”

Theron’s expression changed at those words.

He had heard them too often.

Kael continued. ”You discovered this power three minutes ago.”

”I understand enough.”

”No. You understand that when you tell one of them to kneel, it kneels.”

”That is a useful beginning.”

”It is not control.”

Theron’s eyes narrowed.

The nearest drake turned toward Kael before Vance said anything.

Everyone noticed.

That was the first moment Theron looked surprised.

The drake’s lips peeled away from its teeth.

Low growl.

Kael did not move.

The System opened.

[Draconic Dominion activity increasing.]

[Behavioral synchronization observed.]

[Direct command not confirmed.]

That was worse.

”Theron.”

Vance stared at the drake.

”I did not tell it to do that.”

Kael’s voice hardened.

”That is why they are not going near the hold.”

Theron looked at him.

Then the drake.

”Back.”

The creature backed away.

Immediately.

Vance turned toward Kael again.

”Problem solved.”

”No.”

Something broke in Theron’s expression.

Not sanity.

Patience.

”Move.”

Kael stayed where he was.

Galahad stepped closer.

”Kael.”

”I’m not letting him walk three drakes into a room full of injured people.”

”They are not going into the room,” Theron said.

”You just said they were coming.”

”To the hold.”

”Same direction.”

Theron stared at him.

Darius spoke quietly beside Kael.

”He is not wrong.”

Vance looked at Darius.

The Empire’s Shield stood on one injured leg, sword in one hand, shoulder hanging uselessly.

Theron’s gaze lingered.

Something changed again.

The System noticed before Kael understood.

[Host sympathetic response elevated.]

[Draconic mana output increasing.]

[Possible challenge-response behavior.]

Kael’s stomach tightened.

Darius took one step forward.

Theron’s body responded.

Not Theron.

His body.

The dark veins along his throat brightened.

His shoulders widened.

His breathing deepened.

The drakes around him raised their heads.

Darius stopped.

Theron looked down at himself.

He understood something then.

Not enough.

But something.

”Interesting.”

Kael hated that word.

Darius watched him. ”Your body reacts when you think you are being challenged.”

Theron looked toward him.

”You think?”

”You were calmer before I stepped closer.”

Theron’s jaw tightened.

The dark lines brightened again.

Darius nodded.

”There.”

Vance’s face hardened.

The response grew.

One of the drakes growled.

Darius stepped backward.

The lines dimmed slightly.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Theron looked at his own hand.

Then at Darius.

For the first time since consuming the core, uncertainty appeared.

Not regret.

Not fear.

Uncertainty.

Kael opened the System again.

[Behavioral bleed-through possible.]

[Confidence: low.]

That was all.

Enough.

”The Ash-King’s instincts may be affecting you.”

Theron looked at him sharply.

”May.”

”Yes.”

”Your System does not know.”

”No.”

”Then do not tell me what I am becoming.”

”I am telling you what I am seeing.”

The mountain trembled again.

Stronger.

A section of basalt behind the Ash-King’s corpse broke away and fell into the fissure.

Heat surged upward.

Galahad’s patience ended.

”We are leaving. Now.”

He pointed toward the eastern passage.

”Iris, route.”

Iris did not move immediately.

She looked at Kael.

Then Theron.

Then the drakes.

Galahad understood her concern.

”You are route.”

Not fight.

Not argument.

Route.

Iris nodded.

She moved toward the passage.

Theron looked at her.

One drake shifted.

Iris stopped.

Kael saw her grip tighten around the remaining knife.

Theron looked at the drake.

”Stay.”

The creature froze.

Iris looked toward him.

For one moment, she and Theron simply watched each other.

Then Vance said, ”My people are ahead too.”

Iris nodded once.

”I know.”

She entered the passage.

Kael watched until the ash swallowed her.

Good.

If nothing else, someone would reach the forward hold before Theron.

Galahad pointed toward the passage.

”Everyone else moves.”

Theron took one step.

Kael blocked him.

Not aggressively.

Simply stood there.

”Without the drakes.”

Vance closed his eyes.

Just for a moment.

When he opened them again, the disbelief had vanished.

”You are going to do this.”

”Yes.”

”I can command them.”

”You can command them until something changes.”

”I can feel them.”

That stopped Kael.

Theron looked toward the drakes.

Not at them individually.

Past them.

Into the tunnels.

His expression became distant.

”There are more.”

Sera pushed herself straighter against the pillar.

”How many?”

Theron did not answer immediately.

His head turned slightly.

Left.

Then right.

The way Iris listened for movement.

Except he was not listening.

Kael saw it.

Vance pointed toward a western passage.

”Two.”

Then a lower tunnel.

”Three. Maybe four.”

A distant roar answered.

Theron looked toward it.

Another call came from farther below.

Then another.

Sera’s face tightened.

”You can feel them?”

Theron looked at his hand.

”Yes.”

No triumph this time.

Wonder.

The System reacted.

[Dominion range expanding.]

[Multiple draconic signatures responding.]

[Signal propagation mechanism unresolved.]

Galahad looked toward Kael.

There.

The real problem.

Not three.

Potentially every lesser drake in range.

Theron looked toward the passage Iris had taken.

”We leave now.”

Kael stepped farther into his path.

”No.”

Vance stared at him.

”You are willing to die over where three drakes walk?”

”I am willing to stop you from bringing a power you do not understand into a shelter full of wounded people.”

Theron’s eyes narrowed.

”Move.”

”No.”

The first drake stood.

The second rose behind it.

The third moved to Theron’s right.

No spoken command.

Kael saw.

Darius saw.

Galahad saw.

Theron saw too.

His breathing changed.

The drakes were responding to intention now.

Or emotion.

Or both.

Theron looked at them.

Then at Kael.

”Move him.”

The words came quietly.

The nearest drake attacked.

Darius intercepted.

He had been waiting.

The creature lunged at Kael with jaws open, and Darius stepped across the shortest line between them, blade rising in one compact motion. He did not try to stop the drake’s skull with strength. His sword met the inside of the jaw and turned as the creature committed, Aura running through the steel just long enough to redirect the bite past Kael’s shoulder.

The drake’s body kept coming.

Darius could not move quickly enough on the injured leg.

The creature’s chest hit him.

Darius left the ground.

Kael saw him strike the wall.

Sword first.

Then shoulder.

The useless shoulder.

Darius made no sound.

That scared Kael more.

”DARIUS!”

The drake turned.

Kael moved between them.

No sword.

No mana worth spending.

He did the only thing he had left.

Blood Manipulation.

Darius’s blood.

Not to control him.

To help.

Kael sensed the wound on the thigh, the reopened shoulder, the fresh impact trauma.

Nothing he could fix in combat.

Wrong target.

The drake.

Its mouth.

Blood from where Darius’s sword had cut the inner gum.

Exposed.

Tiny amount.

Enough.

Kael pulled.

The drake jerked its head sideways.

Not pain.

Surprise.

Kael grabbed a broken stone from the ground and slammed it into the creature’s injured mouth.

The rock broke.

The drake recoiled.

Ridiculous.

Effective.

Galahad attacked from the side with his weapon, striking the foreleg and forcing the creature to shift weight.

Sera moved to Kael’s left.

Her hand opened.

Nothing.

No Mana Motes.

Not yet.

She reached again.

One pale mote flickered.

Disappeared.

”Damn it.”

The second drake charged Galahad.

Sera picked up another rock.

”Apparently this is my class now.”

She threw.

The stone struck the drake’s eye ridge.

It flinched.

Galahad moved.

The claw missed him.

Theron watched.

Not participating.

Learning.

Kael saw that and hated him for it.

”You could stop them.”

Theron’s face remained hard.

”You can move.”

Kael stared.

”That is your answer?”

”I told them to move you.”

The first drake recovered.

Darius stood.

Somehow.

One hand against the wall.

Sword still in the other.

His injured shoulder hung worse now.

Kael felt anger rise.

Not cold.

Hot.

”Theron.”

Vance looked toward him.

Kael pointed at Darius.

”You almost killed him.”

”No.”

The answer came too quickly.

”You do not get to say no after the fact.”

Theron’s jaw tightened.

The drakes reacted.

Both turned toward Kael.

There.

Again.

Emotion.

Intent.

Dominion.

Kael saw it.

Theron did too.

The second drake lunged.

Sera was closer.

Too close.

She had no arrow.

No string.

No mana.

She raised the broken bow anyway.

The creature’s jaw opened.

Theron’s head snapped toward it.

”STOP.”

The word hit the Caldera like a dropped gate.

The drake froze.

Not gradually.

Its entire body locked mid-lunge.

Foreclaws dug into stone.

Its jaws stopped less than a foot from Sera’s face.

Hot breath moved her hair.

Sera did not blink.

The drake trembled.

Every muscle fought the command.

Theron raised one hand.

”Back.”

The creature stepped away.

Sera looked at him.

Then at the drake.

Then back to Theron.

”You can stop them.”

Vance’s face tightened.

”Yes.”

”Then you could have stopped them before.”

Theron said nothing.

Galahad looked at him.

”That is the problem.”

Theron’s gaze dropped.

For the first time, shame almost appeared.

Then another tremor came.

Hard.

The ceiling cracked.

Stone dropped between them.

Everyone moved.

The argument ended because the mountain no longer cared.

Theron raised one arm instinctively.

The three drakes spread around him.

Not toward the party.

Around him.

Defensive.

Territorial.

The first drake placed itself between Theron and Kael without being told.

Darius saw.

His voice came low.

”It is getting stronger.”

Kael knew he did not mean Theron alone.

The link.

The Dominion.

Theron looked toward the drakes surrounding him.

Dark veins now reached above his collar.

One split.

Blood ran down his neck.

He wiped it away.

The skin beneath the blood had become darker.

Almost scale-like around the edges.

Not full transformation.

Not yet.

Kael’s System flashed.

[Integration instability increasing.]

[Dominion synchronization increasing.]

[Host tissue failure increasing.]

The contradiction could not have been clearer.

Stronger.

Dying.

At the same time.

Galahad looked toward the passage Iris had taken.

”We move now or the mountain buries all of us.”

Theron nodded.

Kael stepped toward him.

”No drakes at the hold.”

Theron looked tired suddenly.

Not weak.

Tired of the argument.

”I will keep them outside.”

Kael considered.

Darius limped closer.

”They remain at least one passage from the wounded.”

Theron looked toward him.

”You are giving me orders?”

Darius answered quietly. ”Yes.”

The dark veins brightened.

The drakes raised their heads.

Darius did not step closer.

Good.

Learning.

Theron breathed.

Once.

Twice.

The glow dimmed.

”Fine.”

Kael watched him.

Theron had controlled himself.

That mattered.

For now.

Galahad pointed.

”Move.”

This time they did.

The route toward the forward hold had changed since they last used it.

Two sections had collapsed.

A third steamed from a new crack running along one wall.

Iris had left marks wherever the safe path turned: three scratches in stone, a rope knot around a support, one broken spike laid deliberately across a junction.

Kael followed them.

Sera came behind him.

Darius moved slower, but refused help unless the ground became bad enough to force it.

Galahad stayed near him.

Theron followed with the three drakes.

Not beside them.

Behind.

Far enough that everyone could hear the claws.

Close enough that nobody forgot.

After several minutes, the first drake stopped.

Theron stopped with it.

Kael looked back.

Vance had gone rigid.

His head turned toward a side tunnel.

”What?”

Theron lifted one hand.

Everyone went silent.

A scraping sound came from deep inside the passage.

Then another.

Two sets of claws.

Theron stared into the dark.

”Stay.”

The three drakes behind him stopped.

The scraping continued.

Closer.

Sera tightened her grip on the broken bow.

Galahad raised his weapon.

Darius shifted despite the leg.

Kael picked up another rock.

He hated that this had become normal.

Two drakes emerged from the side tunnel.

One large.

One scarred across the snout.

They saw Theron.

Stopped.

The larger one lowered its head.

The scarred one did not.

It growled.

Theron looked at it.

The dark veins along his neck brightened.

”Down.”

The scarred drake resisted.

Its forelegs trembled.

The larger drake was already kneeling.

The scarred one took a step backward.

Theron’s breathing deepened.

”Down.”

The drake snarled.

Its claws cut stone.

Theron’s hand tightened.

The creature collapsed.

Blood appeared beneath one claw where it had torn itself fighting the command.

Kael watched Theron.

Theron watched the drake.

Something changed in his eyes.

For one second, the pupils narrowed into tiny pale points.

Then returned.

Kael’s stomach went cold.

Darius saw.

”Kael.”

”I know.”

Theron looked toward them.

”What?”

Kael did not answer.

Not yet.

The scarred drake remained on the ground.

Theron raised his hand.

”Stay.”

Both new drakes stayed.

He continued walking.

Kael frowned.

”You’re leaving them?”

”For now.”

Good.

Small victory.

Maybe.

They moved again.

The next tremor came before the forward-hold signal line.

This one broke the floor.

Kael heard the crack before the stone separated.

Iris’s route mark ended ten yards ahead beside an old maintenance rail.

Then the ground between them and the mark dropped.

Sera jumped backward.

Darius stumbled.

Galahad caught his armor.

Kael slid two steps before stopping.

Behind them, the drakes dug claws into the floor.

Theron did not fall.

He should have.

His injured hip should have failed under the sudden shift.

Instead he planted one foot.

The stone beneath it cracked.

His body remained upright.

Kael stared.

Theron stared too.

The power had increased again.

The dark veins along his forearms glowed faintly beneath the skin.

Vance looked at his hand.

Then closed it.

A loose chunk of basalt beside his foot broke under the pressure of his fingers.

No Aura.

No technique.

Raw strength.

Darius’s expression became unreadable.

Theron saw.

”What?”

Darius stepped toward the broken gap.

”You are stronger than ten minutes ago.”

Theron almost smiled.

”I noticed.”

Darius looked back.

”You are also bleeding from the eyes.”

Theron’s smile disappeared.

Kael looked.

A thin dark line ran from the corner of Theron’s left eye.

Vance wiped it.

Stared at the blood.

Then at Kael.

The System opened.

[Host vascular stress critical.]

[Output still increasing.]

[Projected stability: deteriorating.]

Kael looked toward Theron.

”You are getting stronger faster than you are dying.”

Theron’s expression did not change.

”That gives me time.”

”No. It gives you less.”

Theron stepped over the crack.

His injured hip bent.

Held.

The dark veins brightened.

He landed.

”Then we use it.”

There.

The sentence that defined him now.

The route was broken, but not impassable.

Darius crossed with Galahad’s help.

Sera jumped.

Kael followed.

Theron crossed last.

The three drakes leaped without difficulty.

Too easy.

Kael remembered why he had opposed bringing them.

The things were becoming useful.

That made them harder to reject.

The old hammer-line appeared around the next corner.

Mara’s system.

A weighted cable ran along the wall.

Iris’s mark sat beside it.

Fresh.

She had passed.

Kael reached the striker and hit the code.

Three.

Pause.

Two.

Three.

The answer came quickly.

One.

Pause.

One.

Forward hold.

Alive.

Galahad exhaled.

Theron looked toward the tunnel ahead.

Then stopped.

His head turned.

Not toward the signal.

Toward the stone wall.

Sera noticed.

”What?”

Theron did not answer.

He turned slowly toward a lower passage branching east.

Nothing moved there.

Kael listened.

Silence.

Vance looked farther into the dark.

”There are more.”

Darius tightened his grip.

”How many?”

Theron’s face had gone distant again.

”Five close.”

A roar came from deep in the eastern passage.

Then another.

The sound rolled through the tunnel.

Theron turned toward a different branch.

”Three there.”

Another call answered.

Farther.

Lower.

Then another from behind them.

The three drakes following Theron lifted their heads.

Kael felt the scale of the problem expanding.

The Ash-King had not ruled one chamber.

It had ruled the Caldera.

Theron could feel what remained of that hierarchy.

Galahad looked toward the forward-hold route.

”How far?”

”Not far,” Kael said.

Iris had already gone ahead.

Good.

They needed warning.

Theron looked toward the forward passage.

Then the eastern one.

Then the western.

Kael thought he was choosing the route.

He was not.

Theron closed his eyes.

Every drake in the corridor went still.

One by one, distant cries began answering through the mountain.

Not random.

Call and response.

A network of predatory voices stretching through the Caldera.

Theron opened his eyes.

For one heartbeat, the pupils were pale points again.

He pointed toward the forward tunnel.

”This way.”

Galahad looked at Kael.

Kael looked toward the clawed shapes gathering behind Vance.

The forward hold lay ahead with Milo, Rask, Mara, Davin, Eron, Veyra, the rescued workers, wounded Vanguard fighters, and everyone else who had survived because Kael had refused to abandon them below.

That work had been finished.

Now those same people were sitting directly in the path of something none of them knew was coming.

Kael moved.

Darius followed.

Galahad came beside him.

Sera limped after them with an unstrung bow and no arrows.

Behind them, Theron Vance walked through the Caldera with three drakes at his heels and more calling to him through the dark.

The Ash-King’s Dominion had belonged to a monster.

In Theron’s hands, it was becoming something else.

And the forward hold was about to meet it
