King of the Wilderness

Chapter 736: Chapter 342: Blue Water Sailing Academy_3

Lin Yu’an quickly set up the live broadcast equipment and politely handed a lapel microphone to Riven. She skillfully clipped it to her collar and playfully winked at the camera, seemingly excited about the upcoming lesson for millions of viewers.

At exactly 8:30 AM local time (8:30 PM Beijing time), the live stream began on time.

”Good evening, good morning, friends.” Lin Yu’an faced the camera, ”The new journey officially starts today. Now, let me introduce my theoretical instructor, Miss Riven.”

The camera panned to Riven, who waved generously, her confident smile highly infectious.

[Whoa! A beautiful instructor! I’m instantly wide awake!]

[That charisma! That figure! So beautiful and charming! Love it!]

[Oh no, God Lin hasn’t even started learning sailing and I feel like my heart is setting sail already.]

”Before we begin, there’s one thing I need to clarify. To ensure the professionalism and efficiency of the lesson, I will be communicating with the instructor entirely in English.”

”I know there will be a language barrier, so I’ve specially embedded a real-time translation plugin within the live stream.” ℯℯ𝘭.

”Friends on the domestic TikTok platform should see a ’Subtitles’ option at the bottom of your screen. Click it to enable bilingual real-time subtitles. Friends on TikTok, this feature should be enabled by default, and you can adjust it yourselves.”

”This way, everyone can experience this top-tier entry-level sailing class barrier-free. As I learn, conditions permitting, I’ll also select some questions from the comments to ask the instructors.”

”Alright, monster student,” Riven playfully teased before turning serious, entering teaching mode, ”Let’s begin, and welcome everyone in the live stream to listen in on what could be the world’s most attended live sailing entry-level class.”

He positioned the main camera to capture the entire classroom and whiteboard, then sat at the desk like a true student and took out a sailing notebook.

Her opening remarks (appearance) were filled with youthful vigor and modernity, immediately gaining favor in the comments.

”The theoretical class is divided into three parts,” she picked up a pen and wrote three titles on the whiteboard, ”First: The Language of the Boat; Second: The Anatomy of the Boat; Third: The Rules of the Boat.”

”We’ll start with the language. Many people get confused about port and starboard because on a boat, left and right are relative, which is very dangerous.”

Riven didn’t give the answer directly but set a scenario first, ”Imagine you’re at the bow and I’m at the stern, facing away from each other. If I shout to throw something to the left, would we toss it in the same direction?”

”No.” Lin Yu’an immediately replied.

”Exactly right. So, we need fixed positional terms.” She extended her left hand, palm down, making an ’L’ shape. ”This is ’Left,’ right? Now, imagine it as the shape of a Port.”

”So, the left side of the boat is always called ’Port.’ Always remember this mnemonic: There’s a port on the left.”

”And the right side of the boat is called ’Starboard.’ This term is very ancient as rudders used to be mounted on the right side. So, port and starboard never change.”

This simple and intuitive memory aid filled the live stream with comments saying ”Learned it.”

[Comment: Got it! Port is the left side! I’m half a sailor already! (dog face)]

”Great, with the basic positions mastered, let’s look at the anatomy of the boat.” Riven wiped the whiteboard clean, took out a sketch of a sailboat, and began introducing its skeleton and muscles like an anatomy class.

”This is the mast, the spine of the boat. This is the mainsail, the large sail behind the mast, providing main power.”

”This is the jib, the smaller sail in front of the mast, assisting with power and steering. The ropes controlling their angle, we call them sheets. And the ropes hoisting them, halyards.”

”Then there’s the forestay connecting the top of the mast to the bow, and the backstay connecting the top to the stern...”

After explaining over a dozen core components, she moved on to the most crucial part of the physical principles.

”Now, let’s talk about how this body comes alive. That is, how it sails in the wind.” She didn’t draw complicated force analysis diagrams but illustrated with an airplane and a sailboat on the whiteboard.

”The upper surface of a wing is curved, air moves faster, pressure is lower; the bottom is flat, air moves slower, pressure is higher. So the plane is lifted into the sky.”

”Our sail is a vertical soft wing. When the wind blows past it, it similarly creates a pressure difference, generating a massive lift that pulls our boat towards the wind’s side-forward in the sea, ’flying’ in the wind.”

[Whoa! Flying in the wind! This metaphor is so romantic and hardcore!]

[I wasted my physics education... This beautiful teacher explains it a million times better than my high school physics teacher!]

A comment floated by: [Comment question: Since it’s being sucked over, wouldn’t a bigger sail be better? Just make a super massive sail and it’s unbeatable?]

Lin Yu’an relayed this question.

Riven laughed, she seemed to enjoy these curiosity-filled questions.

”Great question! In theory, yes, a bigger sail means more lift. But in reality, the boat is a balance system.”

”You have a massive wing in the sky pulling you to the side-forward, and this force will also cause the boat to heel dramatically.”

”So you need something equally powerful underwater to counter it, or you’ll capsize. That something is the Dragon Bone.”
