The Valued Lady is Truly Dominant

The Song Family having received favor from Song Zhiyuan, the Lu Family wisely brought a gift of thanks along. Accompanying the gift was a secret formula—a recipe for Yangrong Pills—from the Lu Family, marking both repayment and a gesture of alliance.

After all, though the Lu Family’s master physician has retired, they are not withdrawing from the power center within the capital, needing to secure alliances, and who better to rely on than Prime Minister Song, who is steadfast and trustworthy?

”This master physician from Lu is truly generous.” Song Ci, reviewing the formula chart, raised an eyebrow and said to Song Zhiyuan, ”Yangrong Pills were always exclusively sold at their family clinic, serving as a major source of income. Now that they’ve sent it over, with our family’s pharmacy producing and exporting it, the profits will be substantial indeed.”

Song Zhiyuan fiddled with a small-leaf sandalwood bead necklace, smiling, ”This master physician from Lu was an individual marked by decisiveness and wisdom. His son wouldn’t have vouched for him otherwise, presenting this secret formula to us. The gift is secondary; the primary intent is clearly to pledge allegiance to our Song Family.”

”A person of boldness,” Song Ci commented. ”Though we’re not lacking this single formula, I propose splitting the profits from the Yangrong Pills, giving half back to the Lu Family.”

”This was precisely my thought as well.” Song Zhiyuan smiled subtly, with the main goal being to prevent any future allegations of exploitation and power abuse against them, thus being prepared against potential risks.

Moreover, by offering half a share back, relations between the two families are preserved. Though the master physician has retired, the Lu Family isn’t without talent. One cannot predict needing their assistance someday. Relationships that can be nurtured should not be neglected, both for the present and future.

”Your insight is reassuring. Silver Coin in this world cannot be fully amassed. As long as our family thrives, there’s no need to hoard all worldly profits, as it’s known, water becomes excessive when full.” Song Ci leaned against the pillow and said, ”With surplus grain on hand, one must not forget to nourish the impoverished populace, to accumulate virtue and deeds. It is in this manner that family reputation is built, ensuring the family’s longevity.”

Officials who are endlessly competing with the common folk and merchants for profit will, in time, only be despised by others and feared by those in power.

Song Ci did not wish for the Song Family to become a thorn in others’ sides, as it would place a sharp blade at their throat.

Song Zhiyuan said, ”I admire your foresight, mother.”

Song Ci waved her hand, took a sip of tea, and said, ”I am merely cautious, and it brings caution as you rise in office. Though I am pleased, there is also fear that you might rise too high and lose sight of the ground. My eldest, you must persistently remain alert and remember your initial intentions, for the heights are solitary.”

”Rest assured, mother, I self-examine three times a day, never daring to commit deeds that harm the state or its people, dishonoring your teachings, nor the trust placed by the Emperor.”

Song Ci’s lips curved into a smile, ”You are my own flesh and blood, thus as your mother, naturally, I trust you. Do not begrudge my nagging. I am old now, and my nagging can only last so many years, so bear with it a bit.”

She said this without any sense of guilt.

Song Zhiyuan felt somewhat helpless, saying, ”A son never finds his mother unpleasant. Your willingness to speak with me brings joy, so please, refrain from saying things that are inauspicious.”

”Alright, I won’t say them.”

”The noble Madam, your aunt has returned to pay her respects to you,” Chun Fen respectfully reported.

Song Ci said, ”Is it Song Zi? Let her come in, then.”

The maid lifted the curtain, allowing Song Zi and her maid to come in, smiling brightly, ”Mother, your daughter has returned to pay respects to you. Ah, brother is also here.”
