The Valued Lady is Truly Dominant

Chapter 1034: Chapter 1034: Putting on the Matriarch Act

The Song Madam sat up straight, smiling as she replied, ”All the guests have been sent off, and I have arranged with Madam Wen for our next visit to Songshan Temple for incense and prayers.”

Song Ci paused her tea-drinking motion for a moment, then lightly said, ”Oh.”

She knew it—Gu’s family had taken a liking.

The Song Madam noticed her indifferent reaction and couldn’t quite gauge her thoughts. Did she fancy the Wen Family’s young lady or not?

The Song Madam bit her lip and cautiously asked, ”Mother, how do you view this Miss Wen? Is she worthy of our Su’er?”

Song Ci said nothing, only playing slowly with the small leaf sandalwood bead necklace in her hand.

Nanny stood right next to her, lowered her gaze, and looked at Song Ci.

The afternoon sun through the south window cast its light on her already lined face, creating shadows of varying depths, making her expression rather indistinct and somewhat enigmatic.

Nanny withdrew her gaze, thinking inwardly that the old lady’s imposing demeanor was quite profound, making even the Madam a bit uneasy.

Song Ci looked at the Song Madam and responded with a smile, ”If I think she’s unworthy, would you stop considering her?”

The Song Madam’s heart sank, and after a hesitation, she said, ”This is also the Prime Minister’s intention, as well as the suggestion of that esteemed person. From my view, this Miss Wen leaves nothing to be desired.”

”In mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationships, the longest interaction is still between you as the mother-in-law and the daughter-in-law. I, as a grandmother, will not bypass you to associate with the granddaughter-in-law. I will always precede you.”

The Song Madam was startled and quickly stood up, speaking anxiously, ”Mother, please don’t say that. I know you have always cherished Su’er and naturally hope he marries a suitable and virtuous wife. You have plenty of experience and certainly possess insight. As the saying goes, you’ve tasted more salt than I’ve eaten rice. Please, give your assessment, and we can discuss it together.”

Song Ci paused her movement on the prayer beads, sighed, and said, ”Since you want me to speak, I will say a few words. This Miss Wen, as you mentioned, has impeccable character and family background. In terms of etiquette and upbringing, truth be told, she could meet the standards of an Imperial Concubine.”

The Song Madam was astonished by such high praise.

”But I feel that her nature is aloof and proud, with a bit of arrogance due to her talents.”

The Song Madam was taken aback.

”A proud disposition often indicates a competitive spirit. The man she desires must have a status higher than hers and be strong enough, or else he won’t command her respect. Do you think Su’er is such a strong man?”

Song Ci smiled faintly, ”A marriage where the woman is strong and the man is weak, it always depends on personalities. Either one is overwhelmingly strong, keeping the other under control, like the Commandery Princess and the Fourth Young Master. One is willing to strike, and the other is willing to endure. But is Su’er of that sort? If not, then imagine their married life? As a mother, would you be content seeing your son subdued by his wife? Especially as he is the eldest son, and the harmony between the eldest son and daughter-in-law is crucial for the family’s development.”

The Song Madam turned pale.

Who would want that? Not everyone is like Song Ci!

But thinking of Wen Zishan’s demeanor, she said awkwardly, ”But Miss Wen seems like a gentle and adept person, not really domineering?”

Song Ci resumed playing with the beads, ”Whether or not she is domineering, a strong-willed woman is not inherently a bad thing; the key is if she knows her limits. Besides being competitive, she highly values her lineage. Even someone like Song Ruwei, born of a concubine yet recognized as a legitimate daughter, she looks down upon. Do you know what that implies?”
