The Valued Lady is Truly Dominant

Chapter 1004: Chapter 1004: Did Bo Ren Die Because of Me?

What Song Ci hadn’t anticipated was that Madam Ji wouldn’t merely disappear from the public eye, but would never appear again, as she suddenly dropped dead one night.

Madam Ji took her own life.

Upon hearing this news early in the morning, Song Ci spat out the mouthful of hot tea she had yet to swallow.

”What, took her own life?”

Nanny handed over a handkerchief and nodded: ”It’s said she couldn’t get over it for a moment and swallowed gold. Her body has been taken care of, and the news has already been reported.”

Song Ci casually wiped the corner of her mouth and frowned: ”No way, she would take her own life? Are you joking? Given her greed for wealth and love for petty gains, would she really be driven to take her own life? I don’t believe it!”

”Believe it or not, she’s gone anyway.”

Song Ci clenched the handkerchief and asked: ”In your view, did she truly take her own life, or was it forced?”

The two exchanged a glance, a look that said the inside story need not be detailed, a mutual understanding between them.

A chill rose up Song Ci’s spine: ”The Ji Family is ruthless; Madam Ji was married into the family when they were in humble straits. Even if they were displeased with her, they could have just divorced her; there’s no need to make her... disappear!”

She made a slashing gesture, thinking the Ji Family was indeed heartless. Madam Ji had been part of the family for decades, yet they were still capable of such cruelty.

”Sending her away is not as good as death; given her temperament, she probably wouldn’t have accepted a dismissal even under duress.” Nanny replied: ”Having enjoyed immense wealth, how could she tolerate going back to gnawing on chaff?”

Song Ci sighed: ”You’re right, it’s hard to downsize once one has been used to luxury; it just feels the Ji Family is so cold-hearted.”

Nanny hesitated briefly: ”Although the Ji Family is cold-hearted and indifferent, those who drove her to take her own life were likely under instruction from someone.”

Song Ci was startled: ”Do you mean the Imperial Concubine?”

”Could very well be Prince Min.”

Song Ci’s breath hitched involuntarily.

”From a generational standpoint, Madam Ji was only his cousin-in-law. To be blunt, since she’s gone, replacing her during mourning isn’t difficult, but keeping such a troublemaker around could potentially cause even more upheavals. That statement Madam Ji made was indeed quite inappropriate, and insidious people could easily brand her with betrayal, threatening both her family and the Ji Family, which no one could afford.”

Nanny whispered: ”Conversely, one person’s death preserves the clan and avoids future calamities, making this deal worthwhile.”

Song Ci felt a chill in her heart; human lives are cheap as dirt in ancient times, and in a heartbeat, your own kin could turn against you.

Profit above all, applies everywhere.

”Seems Ji’s Elder Master is likely the happiest, gaining success from his wife’s death.” Song Ci remarked cynically.

Nanny agreed wholeheartedly; given such callousness, a new wife would be brought into the house during mourning.

Song Ci felt disgusted and took another sip of tea, suddenly realizing something: ”Wait, the Ji Family wouldn’t think I drove Madam Ji to her death, would they?”

After all, I did say a few things before, and then Madam Ji suddenly vanished.

It’s like the saying, I didn’t kill Bo Ren, yet Bo Ren died because of me.

Nanny paused, surprised: ”Surely not?”

Just as Song Ci was about to say more, the Jiang family entered the room, on their way to offer condolences to the Ji Family. After all, the Ji Family held a Duke title and was the maternal family of Prince Min; it was only proper to go.
