Pokémon Invasion: Explaining Pokémon to Save the World

The newly arrived Pidgey was clearly much more normal in size. As it circled around the larger Pidgey, its overall size was only about one-third of the latter’s.

”Pi… pi-pi.”

The smaller Pidgey looked extremely anxious, flapping its wings with all its strength as it spoke rapidly to the larger Pidgey. From time to time, the larger Pidgey let out a few cries in response.

Chen Mo stood to the side without saying a word, calmly analyzing the situation.

It seemed that the large Pidgey didn’t live alone in Hongjingpo Forest. It clearly had its own kin, and judging by this scene, its status within the flock wasn’t low either. When something urgent happened, other Pidgey would immediately come to inform it.

Before long, the large Pidgey nodded at the smaller one, spread its massive wings, and took off into the air. With a piercing cry, it flew swiftly toward a certain part of the forest.

[Pidgey left in such a hurry—did something happen?]

[Isn’t that obvious?]

[I have a guess—just a guess—but Pidgey leaving this time might be closely related to why it refused to become Mo-bao’s Pokémon.]

[Same feeling!]

[So what do you think, Mo-bao? Should you follow it?]

[Do we even need to ask? Mo-bao, for Pidgey—charge!]

There was no need for the chat to urge him on. After exchanging a glance with Pichu, Chen Mo quickly grabbed his gear and set off, chasing after the shadow streaking across the sky.

Pidgey, I absolutely won’t give up. If you’re in trouble, I’ll help you—no matter what!

In Red Leaf Lake.

A Magikarp watched the retreating figure disappear into the forest, recalling the words Chen Mo had spoken to Pidgey earlier.

”Gulu gulu…”

Companions…

It turned its head and looked at the group of its own kind drifting absentmindedly in the water, lost in thought.

Although the Pidgey wasn’t flying particularly high this time, its speed was astonishing. Relying on human legs to catch up to it was clearly impossible.

Fortunately, the smaller Pidgey following behind wasn’t flying very fast.

Moreover, Chen Mo had discreetly used [Eye of Detection] earlier and confirmed that the smaller Pidgey wasn’t in good physical condition. Its wings had suffered minor injuries. According to the system’s assessment, without medication it would take one to two days to heal.

That was exactly why Chen Mo dared to chase after a Pokémon on foot.

”It’s a bit slow, but I hope we can catch up.”

Just as that thought crossed his mind, Pichu—who was keeping watch on the smaller Pidgey’s movements and guiding Chen Mo—suddenly let out a startled cry.

Chen Mo immediately stopped and looked up.

He saw the smaller Pidgey wobbling unsteadily in midair. After struggling for a moment, it could no longer hold on and plummeted straight down toward the forest below.

”Watch out!”

Without time to think, Chen Mo dropped the livestream equipment and sprinted toward where the Pidgey was falling. Adjusting his position, he stretched out both arms and successfully caught the small Pidgey.

The moment it landed in Chen Mo’s arms, the small Pidgey struggled desperately—but clearly not to escape. It was trying to rush toward somewhere else.

”Your injuries have worsened. If they aren’t treated in time, they could leave lasting aftereffects.”

Chen Mo quickly rummaged through his backpack and took out a brand-new bottle of Potion.

After treating the large Pidgey earlier, Chen Mo had anticipated that he might encounter injured Pokémon again. He’d spent some extra points in advance to buy a few lower-grade Potions and kept them in his backpack as backup—also to avoid any awkward questions during livestreams.

He hadn’t expected to need them so soon.

Still, Pokédex points were meant to be spent. As long as they were useful, they were worth it.

”Don’t worry, little Pidgey. We’re the same as you. You show us the way, and we’ll make sure to take you where you want to go.”

Whether it was because the pain in its body was easing, or because of Chen Mo’s promise, the small Pidgey gradually stopped struggling.

”All right, the treatment’s done. Now it’s your turn to guide us.”

”Pi—”

At the same time.

Above a relatively sparse stretch of forest ahead.

The large Pidgey once again ran into its old nemesis.

If Chen Mo were here, he would have recognized it immediately.

This massive bird Pokémon, far larger than Pidgey, had orange plumage, with creamy-white coloring between its wings and at the tips. A red crest crowned its head, and its long pink beak was sharp and menacing.

There was no doubt about it—it was the Fearow that led a flock of Spearow and dominated this part of the forest.

Conflicts between species over survival territory were nothing rare. And between the Pidgey line and the equally Flying-type but notoriously aggressive Spearow line, clashes were especially frequent.

In the original story, Ash’s Pidgeot had been forced to leave him precisely because of the territorial war between Pidgey and Spearow, disappearing without a trace afterward.

At this very moment, in order to protect its flock from the attacks of Spearow and Fearow, this abnormally large Pidgey—already comparable to a Pidgeotto, perhaps even faintly stronger—once again stepped forward.

With a flash of Quick Attack, it swiftly knocked away several Spearow that were assaulting the Pidgey flock. Then, alone, it positioned itself directly in front of their leader—Fearow.

When enemies meet, eyes burn red.

The two great birds unleashed their signature moves at the same time—Gust versus Wing Attack—colliding violently in midair.

The resulting shockwaves rippled through the sky.

But one was still in its basic form, while the other was fully evolved. The gap in base stats alone amounted to nearly two hundred points.

No matter how extraordinary this Pidgey was—its massive size and formidable strength—it still suffered from an innate disadvantage against Fearow.

Before long, it fell into a losing position.

During a high-speed chase, Fearow exploited its superior speed and landed a devastating Drill Peck squarely on Pidgey’s back, instantly robbing it of its ability to fly. With a pained cry, Pidgey spiraled toward the ground.

The scene felt eerily familiar.

Fearow decided it would no longer spare this Pidgey that had angered it time and time again. It would end this Pidgey’s life—and then drive the entire Pidgey flock out of the forest once and for all.

Its wings beat powerfully as energy gathered within its body. Diving at full speed, it closed in rapidly on the falling Pidgey.

However—

At that very moment.

A brilliant streak of lightning shot forward at incredible speed, cutting cleanly between Fearow and Pidgey, separating them into two different spaces.

”Huh?”

Startled by the sudden interference, Fearow lowered its head in confusion.

On the ground below, a strange human had appeared out of nowhere. In his arms, he caught its mortal enemy—the large Pidgey. To either side stood a small Pidgey and a Pichu.

”Looks like we made it in time.”

The young man glanced at the Pidgey in his arms, its face contorted in pain, then slowly raised his head. His expression was solemn as he looked up at the Fearow circling above.
