Pokémon Invasion: Explaining Pokémon to Save the World

In the Pokémon movie Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, Sir Aaron, the Aura Guardian, aside from the Lucario that followed him, also possessed a Pidgeot.

At first glance, that Pidgeot didn’t seem like anything special. But when it carried the staff sealing Lucario to Queen Rileen’s side, its sheer size became strikingly clear—just its head alone was nearly half the size of the queen’s entire body.

Some people said that Pidgeot was so large because it was an ancient subspecies. Others claimed it was nothing more than an animation error.

But as Chen Mo looked once again at the Pidgey before him, he couldn’t help but start wondering—if this Pidgey were to evolve into Pidgeot, would it also reach that kind of scale? Even if not to that extreme, it would certainly be far larger than an ordinary Pidgey, large enough to firmly carry both him and Pichu.

”…So that’s how it is, Pidgey. I really do like Pokémon, but what I like even more is building connections with them in my own way—truly understanding each other, becoming friends, becoming partners.”

Chen Mo tentatively extended his right hand, slowly moving closer, wanting to pat Pidgey’s fluffy head.

Noticing Chen Mo’s movement, the Pidgey standing on the ground merely glanced at him curiously. It didn’t flap its wings to stop him, nor did it retreat. It simply allowed Chen Mo’s palm to gently rest on its head.

”Good… very good.”

Chen Mo crouched down, keeping himself at the same eye level as Pidgey. Feeling the warmth coming through his palm, a smile unconsciously spread across his face.

Although he’d already thoroughly rubbed Pidgey’s head while treating its injuries that night, this moment felt entirely different. Now, Pidgey was fully conscious—and in a sense, this touch had its tacit permission.

[Aggressively petting the Pidgey birb head!]

[I suddenly realized Mo-bao really likes rubbing Pokémon heads—Pichu, Pidgey, all of them.]

[Who wouldn’t love petting such fluffy heads? I’d do the same.]

[Pidgey isn’t resisting at all—looks like it’s even enjoying it. I’m so jealous. It feels like Pidgey has completely fallen for Mo-bao.]

[Hmph, it’s just a Pidgey. I’m totally not jealous. Not at all!]

This counted as a good start.

Looking at Pidgey, Chen Mo continued,

”Bringing those Pokémon to me could cause you unnecessary trouble. You might even make powerful enemies for yourself. So in the future, there’s no need to do things like that anymore.”

”Pi—”

Pidgey let out a clear cry in response. Then it glanced at the pile of Berries that Chen Mo had already sorted and set aside.

”That isn’t necessary either.”

Understanding Pidgey’s meaning, Chen Mo smiled.

”The Berries and Apricorns you and the Combee gave us are already more than enough for Pichu and me for a long time. If you keep bringing more, most of them will just go to waste… honestly, some might already be wasted.”

”Pichu!”

They won’t go to waste!

Pichu, sitting on Chen Mo’s shoulder, suddenly chimed in with a dissenting opinion.

Chen Mo promptly ignored it.

Feeling that the timing was about right, Chen Mo withdrew his hand, the smile on his face slowly giving way to a serious expression.

He looked at Pidgey. Pidgey looked back at him.

”Pidgey, have you ever thought about living in the world beyond the forest? Compared to the Pokémon and Berries you’ve given me, what I really want… is to live together with you.”

Chen Mo spoke softly, his expression earnest.

”So Pidgey—would you be willing to become my partner? To travel together with me and Pichu in the days to come, growing together?”

[Here it comes—this man finally couldn’t hold back.]

[Sigh… I can already see the outcome. Pidgey, my Pidgey… today you’re becoming someone else’s Pokémon.]

[Honestly, with how much Pidgey likes Mo-bao, I feel like Mo-bao could just say ’follow me’ and Pidgey would agree instantly.]

[Hey, do you even know how to read the room?]

[Look at Pidgey’s eyes—I feel like it’s completely tempted already.]

”Pichu pichu.”

Pichu also extended an invitation to Pidgey.

It no longer disliked Pidgey at all. The displeasure it had felt yesterday when Pidgey left without a word had long since vanished, washed away by the massive pile of Berries Pidgey had sent over.

This was the approval of a true little foodie. If Pidgey joined Chen Mo and Pichu’s team, the future would surely be brighter.

However—

Something completely unexpected happened.

”Pi… pi…”

Pidgey suddenly let out a low cry, then took several steps backward, its meaning unmistakable.

[Huh?! Why?! Pidgey actually refused?!]

[Am I seeing things? Is this a hallucination? Why is Pidgey backing away?]

[No doubt about it… Mo-bao just got rejected by Pidgey.]

[Honestly, this is the first time I’ve seen Mo-bao take an L since following him. Normally I’d be laughing, but right now I just can’t. Why does this hurt so much?!]

[This is weird. I clearly saw hesitation—and longing—in Pidgey’s eyes. So why did it still reject Mo-bao?]

[You can read a bird’s eyes? You’re pretty amazing too, huh.]

Seeing that comment, Ah Hui—already feeling miserable—didn’t hesitate at all. He slapped the commenter with a permanent mute.

Having raised cats and dogs before, Ah Hui could clearly feel it—Pidgey had definitely been moved just now. Something else was holding it back.

”Damn it… if Mo-bro and Pidgey really miss this chance, I’m going to feel awful every time I see a Pidgey from now on.”

It wasn’t just Ah Hui.

Many viewers were already feeling heavy-hearted.

Even Chen Mo—who usually believed his mindset was fairly steady—felt his emotions wobble. He activated [Eye of Detection] once more and checked his affinity with Pidgey.

Not only had it not dropped, it had surged past eighty, ranking second among all the Pokémon he’d encountered—just below Pichu.

Logically speaking, with such high affinity, Pidgey should have agreed to become his partner.

So why…?

Chen Mo frowned.

He suddenly recalled the circumstances of his second encounter with Pidgey—and the wounds that had covered its body.

His intuition told him that Pidgey’s refusal was very likely related to that.

Just as Chen Mo was thinking about how to resolve Pidgey’s inner conflict, a young, tender bird cry suddenly sounded from above.

He looked up.

Over Red Leaf Lake, another Pidgey was flying toward their location.
