Pokémon Invasion: Explaining Pokémon to Save the World

Early the next morning.

Chen Mo was awakened by a gentle shaking and a familiar cry. Still half-asleep, he groggily opened his eyes and saw Pichu standing by his feet, tugging at his leg with all its might.

”What’s wrong, Pichu?”

As his mind gradually cleared, Chen Mo stretched and asked in confusion.

”Pichu! Pichu pichu!”

Pichu turned around and pointed toward a direction behind it.

Beside the long-extinguished campfire, aside from a few feathers left behind from last night’s treatment, there was no other trace to be seen.

”It left?”

Although Chen Mo was extremely curious about that abnormal Pidgey, if it wanted to leave, there was no way he would stop it given his personality. Still, he couldn’t help feeling a twinge of regret.

He lowered his head slightly, looked at Pichu, and smiled as he comforted it.

”Don’t worry, Pichu. Judging by the situation, Pidgey’s injuries should have mostly healed, so it left on its own.”

”Pichu?!”

After realizing what that meant, Pichu looked clearly dejected.

It couldn’t quite accept why Pidgey would leave without saying goodbye—after all, last night it and Chen Mo had done everything they could to help it.

In Pichu’s way of thinking, it and Pidgey should already be friends.

And compared to the other friend it had made yesterday, Magikarp was extremely polite and well-mannered.

”Whether human or Pokémon, it’s all the same. Some emotions burn fiercely, to the point where people want to write all their thoughts on their faces. Others are calm and steady—on the surface they may seem cold, but if you help them, they might remember it for a lifetime. Pidgey might be like that too. Maybe it already sees you as a friend it could entrust its whole life to. It just had to leave because of various reasons.”

Chen Mo squatted down, gently rubbing Pichu’s little head as he spoke softly.

However, the look on Pichu’s face was one of pure confusion.

Only then did Chen Mo realize that he’d made the same mistake again—saying too many things that were difficult for Pichu to understand at its current stage.

Just as he was wondering whether he should explain it another way, Pichu suddenly nuzzled affectionately against his palm.

”Pichu pichu~”

It didn’t understand those complicated words, but it did hear Chen Mo say that Pidgey might already consider it a friend.

And since Chen Mo said so, Pichu chose to believe it completely.

”Gulu gulu…”

In Red Leaf Lake, a Magikarp hidden among the reeds by the shore looked in the direction of the human and the Pokémon, slowly blowing out a string of bubbles.

...

The livestream went live once more.

The viewer count instantly broke a hundred and continued to climb. In less than a minute, it had already reached several thousand.

[Wasn’t it agreed you’d start at eight? It’s almost ten already!]

[Mo-bao actually stood us up. I’m heartbroken.]

[Can you guys calm down? Did you forget what happened last night? The fact that Mo-bao can even stream at this hour is already impressive.]

[Anyone who doesn’t know what happened should search on the platform. There should be a full recap.]

[Mo-bao, what about that injured Pidgey?]

After briefly explaining Pidgey’s departure to the viewers, Chen Mo smiled and said,

”Although a small accident happened in between, it won’t affect today’s plans. Next, I’ll be heading deeper into Hongjingpo Forest Park to visit the Pokémon that live in this forest.”

Since he was already behind schedule, Chen Mo didn’t dawdle this time. He quickly packed up his equipment and set off, leaving Red Leaf Lake behind.

And at that very moment—

Thousands of meters up in the sky, a certain bird Pokémon flapped its wings and also began to move.

Compared to the outskirts of Hongjingpo Forest Park, the deeper Chen Mo went from Red Leaf Lake, the more wild Pokémon he encountered along the way.

Rattata, Bellsprout, Nidoran…

All kinds of small Pokémon moved through the forest from time to time. When they happened to run into Chen Mo, this unfamiliar human, most chose to flee immediately. Only a few, driven by curiosity, lingered at a relatively safe distance, gazing at him from afar.

Each time he encountered a new Pokémon, Chen Mo would slow his steps slightly and give the captivated viewers a brief explanation.

”Look at what we’ve found. If I’m not mistaken, this should be an Oddish, also known as the ’Wandering Weed.’ During the daytime, they bury their feet—actually their roots—into the soil to absorb nutrients, staying almost completely still. It’s only at night that they get up and walk around to spread their spores.”

Countless viewers watched as Chen Mo suddenly stopped, pointed at what looked like an ordinary weed, and launched into an explanation. Instantly, their minds were filled with question marks.

Because no matter how they looked at it, it was just a weed.

But when Chen Mo lightly touched the ”weed’s” leaf with his finger, they suddenly noticed—it was trembling.

Clearly not a normal plant.

[I kneel before Mo-bao. You can even spot this—what kind of eyesight is that…]

[Oddish: Y-you mind your own business!]

[This is seriously true sight.]

That wasn’t wrong at all—I really did only notice it after turning it on.

Chen Mo smiled slightly.

”Judging by the sheen on its leaves, this Oddish seems to be doing pretty well here.”

The Oddish buried in the soil trembled even more violently.

Chen Mo chuckled.

Looks like he scared it.

Not wanting to disturb it further, Chen Mo turned around. As he continued explaining Oddish to the viewers, he also resumed walking forward.

A few minutes later.

After confirming that Chen Mo had truly left, the Oddish hidden underground hurriedly pulled itself out of the soil. It checked its surroundings again and again, and only after confirming that the terrifying human was really gone did it panic and start moving to relocate.

That scared the grass right out of me—this place is no good anymore!

However—

Before the Oddish could even take two steps, a fierce gust of wind suddenly swept through, instantly flipping its small body onto the ground.

After struggling to get back up, the Oddish suddenly realized that something seemed to be blocking its view.

It slowly raised its head, only to see a tall, imposing bird staring straight at it with razor-sharp eyes.

”Maa-na…”

A look of utter despair appeared on the Oddish’s face.

That’s right.

This was none other than the Pidgey that had been quietly following Chen Mo all along.

Pidgey carefully sized up the Oddish, then directly grabbed one of its leaves with its beak and flapped its wings, shooting straight up into the sky.

With no time—and no ability—to resist, the Oddish watched the ground grow farther and farther away, tears streaming down its face.

It’s over.

My life as a grass… is over.
