Pokémon Invasion: Explaining Pokémon to Save the World

”Of course, everyone doesn’t need to worry too much. Gyarados rarely appear directly in our line of sight. Most of the time, they either dwell deep within certain bodies of water or roam freely in the vast oceans. Toward humans, they are usually indifferent and rarely bother to pay attention.”

A faint smile appeared on Chen Mo’s face.

”And if you start raising one from a Magikarp, then under normal circumstances—even if it eventually evolves into a ferocious Gyarados—it will still recognize you, obey your commands, and in moments of danger, use its now immensely powerful body to protect you.”

”Emotion is the most crucial bond between humans and spirits. I often say this: as long as you treat the spirits you encounter with kindness and sincerity, most spirits will not respond to you with malice. Gyarados is no exception.”

”Of course, if you’re unlucky enough to run into a wild Gyarados that’s already in a rampaging state, then don’t even think about trying to move it with goodwill—run as far and as fast as you can.”

Now far more experienced, Chen Mo used a light, half-joking tone to deliver this bit of knowledge, successfully easing the tension that had settled over the livestream.

Far away in the capital, Hu Chengliang paused slightly when he heard this.

”Emotion… I’ve learned something.”

In fact, Gyarados was not an unfamiliar spirit within the Monster Research Countermeasures Bureau. It had long been classified as one of the ”most dangerous to humans, to be eliminated with armed force upon encounter.”

”Would a Gyarados really protect a human?”

Hu Chengliang couldn’t help but feel some doubt.

After all, he had only ever witnessed the violent, destructive side of Gyarados—never a scene where it was close to humans.

Still…

”To think that such a terrifying, brutal spirit—one whose energy beams can tear apart a modern ship—would once have been something as harmless as a Magikarp before evolving… It’s truly unbelievable.”

Hu Chengliang sighed inwardly.

Splash!

Another Magikarp leapt out of Redleaf Lake.

This time, it jumped only a few meters away from Chen Mo. Thanks to the camera angle, the audience was able to see the Magikarp’s full appearance with exceptional clarity.

[That Magikarp’s eyes look full of wisdom (evil grin).]

[Mo Bao, why don’t you raise another Magikarp and see if you can train it into a Gyarados?]

[Is this the same Magikarp we saw jumping earlier on the way here? It really seems to love leaping out of the water.]

After glancing at the comments, Chen Mo shook his head.

”I’m not sure whether it’s the same Magikarp as before, but Magikarp are naturally spirits that love jumping in the water.”

”And personally, I think this might be related to a special method of evolution unique to Magikarp.”

”Magikarp have a migratory instinct. It’s said that on certain islands, some Magikarp, not long after being born, will follow rivers all the way to the sea.”

”After that, by surviving and swimming in the ocean, they accumulate the experience, strength, and energy necessary for their future evolution. When the time is right, they return in groups to the island where they were born.”

”And on that island, legend has it that a Dragon Gate stands atop a towering waterfall. Those Magikarp that manage to swim against the current and leap over the waterfall successfully evolve into Gyarados.”

”Those that fail fall back into the sea, repeating the cycle—again and again—until they either succeed… or die.”

”So perhaps those Magikarp that so often leap from the water are practicing for the most important jump of their entire lives.”

[It really is the story of the carp leaping the Dragon Gate… When you put it that way, it suddenly feels kind of romantic.]

[Even Magikarp are working this hard to leap forward—what excuse do you have to slack off at work while watching a livestream on a weekday?!]

[Sorry, I’m a student.]

[Sorry, my family’s rich.]

[...]

[Mo Bao, I’ve achieved enlightenment!]

Watching the chat suddenly derail, Chen Mo felt a headache coming on.

What exactly did you enlighten yourself about…

”Actually, there’s one thing I forgot to mention. In nature, precisely because Magikarp love jumping out of the water, they’re often targeted by other spirits. For example, a bird-type spirit called Pidgeotto will swoop down from the sky the moment a Magikarp leaps—”

Before he could finish his sentence—

A bird-like creature, white with yellow-brown markings, suddenly dove from the sky at high speed. It perfectly seized a Magikarp that was mid-leap, let out a clear, piercing cry, flapped its wings proudly, and vanished into the distance in an instant.

The entire sequence happened so fast and so cleanly that Chen Mo’s mind failed to catch up. He stood there, completely stunned.

”Pichu… did you see that just now?”

”Pichu… Pichu…”

Clearly, Pichu was just as dumbfounded.

The livestream chat, meanwhile, exploded into utter chaos.

[HAHAHAHA, Mo Bao, what kind of cursed crow mouth is this?! I’m dying!]

[Magikarp: I’ve done no evil in my life, yet today it finally happened. If there’s a next life, I’ll tell all the other fish to stay far away from a man who carries Pichu and loves to do live explanations.]

[I really didn’t expect Mo Bao to have this kind of ’passive skill.’ I can’t breathe, I’m laughing too hard.]

[That dive was insanely fast and clean. Mo Bao, honest question—was that really a Pidgeotto? That was cool as hell!]

[Pidgeotto: Jump again. I dare you.]

The lightning-fast ambush left Chen Mo momentarily speechless.

After regaining his senses, he glanced at the chat and helplessly shook his head.

”If I didn’t see wrong, that really was a Pidgeotto. They’re quite common in forests. What just happened can only be described as that Magikarp being unlucky—it has nothing to do with me.”

Despite his earnest explanation, the livestream had already firmly slapped the ”jinx” label onto Chen Mo.

Feeling utterly wronged, Chen Mo stared in the direction where the Pidgeotto had disappeared. For some reason, he felt that the bird looked a little different from ordinary Pidgeotto…

”Maybe I’m just imagining things…”

As Chen Mo turned back to continue explaining Pidgeotto to the audience—trying, incidentally, to clear his name—no one noticed what was happening beneath the surface of Redleaf Lake.

A Magikarp watched its companions, who continued to leap mindlessly from the water one after another. It spat out a string of bubbles, and a strange flicker of emotion passed through its intelligent eyes.

Then, with a gentle swish of its tail, it calmly turned away—slowly distancing itself from the rest.
