Pokémon Invasion: Explaining Pokémon to Save the World

”…So that’s how it is. If my guess is correct, the injured Pidgey we’ve run into now is actually the same ’Pidgeotto’ that was catching Magikarp over Red Leaf Lake during the day. At the time, it was simply moving far too fast, and its size was indeed far larger than that of an ordinary Pidgey, so I failed to see clearly and mistook it for a ’Pidgeotto.’ For that, I admit—it was my mistake.”

As he explained to the camera beside him, Chen Mo rummaged through the backpack at his feet.

”Found it!”

Because of the camera angle, the viewers couldn’t see exactly what Chen Mo was doing. They only saw him pull out something that looked like a spray gun from his backpack.

[What’s that?]

[Is Mo-bao planning to use that to treat the Pidgey?]

[Honestly, I’ve always felt Mo-bao is pretty mysterious—like his vast Pokémon knowledge, and now these unknown medical tools.]

[Everyone has their secrets. Mo-bao probably does too. But since he’s working for the coexistence of all humanity and all Pokémon, I’m willing to support his choices. So to certain people—at least in this livestream, please drop those thoughts.]

[I never said I wanted to do anything to Mo-bao. I support him too.]

Regarding the discussion in the chat, Chen Mo understood that what was coming would eventually come.

But seeing how unusually united the viewers were in their support, he couldn’t help but feel a little moved.

”Thank you all for your understanding… The item I’m holding right now is indeed a special tool used to treat Pokémon. As for how effective it is, I honestly don’t know for sure myself.”

After all, games were games, and reality was reality.

In the system’s descriptions of various healing items, there was nothing as clear as the in-game tooltips that precisely stated how much HP a Pokémon would recover. Instead, they only used vague terms like ”minor” or ”significant” recovery.

Taking into account Pidgey’s current condition and the system’s descriptions of the different medicines, Chen Mo chose to purchase a bottle of Max Potion.

”Let’s hope this healing spray that cost me fifteen hundred Pokédex points doesn’t disappoint me…”

Following the usage instructions, Chen Mo moved to Pidgey’s side and carefully sprayed the medicine onto every wound on its body.

Perhaps sensing something, the Pidgey—still in pain—struggled to open its eyes. When it saw Chen Mo in front of it, it immediately began to thrash.

”Pichu, pichu! Pichu, pichu!”

Pichu reacted swiftly, jumping down from Chen Mo’s shoulder and waving its little paws, chattering nonstop as it tried to explain things to the Pidgey.

After a long while—

Seemingly understanding what was going on, the Pidgey glanced at Chen Mo, then slowly closed its eyes again.

”Don’t worry. You’ll be back to full health soon.”

Chen Mo gently soothed the Pidgey while checking for any abnormal signs of fever on its body.

Perhaps as the medicine began to take effect, when Chen Mo used [Eye of Detection] again, he saw that the description in the brackets under the Pidgey’s physical condition was no longer as frightening as before.

It now specifically noted that, under the influence of the Max Potion, it was expected to recover fully within one day.

Seeing this, Chen Mo finally let out a long sigh of relief.

Fifteen hundred points—worth it.

Half an hour later.

The Pidgey seemed to have regained some awareness, though its body still couldn’t move freely.

Chen Mo thought for a moment and planned to let the Pidgey rest inside the tent first—it was at least a bit warmer in there. Unfortunately, the still-wary Pidgey refused no matter what, and even Pichu’s persuasion failed to soften that stubborn, vigilant heart.

”Forget it, Pichu. Don’t force it.”

Chen Mo smiled and stopped Pichu, who still wanted to try persuading it again.

”Pichu…”

Pichu looked thoroughly disgruntled, as if complaining that this Pidgey was being unreasonable despite its good intentions.

Although the temperature difference between day and night in the forest wasn’t huge, it was still March, and the temperature was already low to begin with. Combined with the chill of the deep night, a gust of cold wind blew past, and the Pidgey lying on the ground began to tremble uncontrollably.

Noticing this, Chen Mo abandoned the idea of returning to the tent alone with Pichu to rest.

”Pichu, I’m thinking of lighting a campfire here. How about you go back into the tent to rest first?”

”Pichu!”

Pichu shook its head and quickly climbed back onto Chen Mo’s shoulder, clearly making its stance known.

It wanted to stay here—with Chen Mo and the Pidgey.

”Honestly, I don’t know what to do with you.”

No sooner said than done.

The firewood collected during the day was still sufficient, so starting a fire was easy. Before long, a bright campfire once again appeared by the shores of Red Leaf Lake.

”Pi…”

Feeling the sudden warmth, the Pidgey slowly opened its tightly shut eyes.

Not far from its line of sight was a dazzling cluster of flames.

Sparks danced and leapt within the fire, radiating warmth to all things around.

Its sharp gaze paused for a moment. It slightly raised its head and looked at the strange human who was talking to Pichu, then, after a long while, slowly closed its eyes again.

”Luckily, I still had a blanket prepared in the car. It’s a bit thin, but with the campfire, it should be enough to get through the night.”

Having changed into a hooded jacket, Chen Mo returned from where the car was parked to the campsite. He glanced at the Pidgey, whose eyes were still closed—though it was unclear whether it was asleep—then looked at the weakening campfire. Lowering his footsteps, he walked around to the other side and gently added some more firewood.

[Mo-bao, you should rest soon. Seeing how much you’ve done for the Pidgey and it still being so unappreciative—I really feel bad for you.]

[Honestly, when it comes to how he treats Pokémon, Mo-bao is flawless.]

[Feeling sorry for Mo-bao—go get some rest already. It’s almost four in the morning.]

”It’s fine. I’ll stay up a little longer and then rest. Let’s end this emergency stream here. See you all tomorrow.”

After saying goodbye to the viewers, Chen Mo tucked Pichu—who had already been rubbing its eyes—under the blanket to rest. He then pulled up the hood of his jacket, slipped his hands into his pockets, and while admiring the bright moon in the sky, occasionally added more wood to the fire to keep it burning.

Exhaustion eventually won out.

Before long, Chen Mo lowered his head slightly and fell asleep.

A long time passed.

Beside the flickering campfire.

The Pidgey opened its eyes once more. It looked at Chen Mo and Pichu, both fast asleep, and tried several times to stand up.

At last, it succeeded.

Looking at the wounds on its body that were gradually healing, a mix of indescribable emotions flowed through the Pidgey’s gaze.

Suddenly—

It turned its head and stared sharply toward a direction along the shore of Red Leaf Lake.

”Pi…”

Tilting its head, confusion flickered in its eyes.

Just now, it had clearly sensed something in the lake watching this place. Yet after staring for a long time, it found nothing at all.

Maybe it was just mistaken.

The Pidgey withdrew its gaze and lay back down in its original spot.

There was still time. No need to hurry away.

The forest was silent, broken only by the rise and fall of insect calls.

Within Red Leaf Lake—

A Magikarp emerged from the reeds near the shore. With a gentle flick of its tail, it vanished beneath the surface of the water.
