Apocalypse: Master of Soul Beasts

Chapter 194: Chapter 150: The Meaning of Existence! (Additional updates for 100 votes in April!)_1

After the Dominator said these words, his voice slowly faded away.

Of course, he hadn’t really left. Perhaps the Dominator was hiding somewhere outside the barrier, silently watching the struggles of his minions, or their changing states of mind. Maybe he was swirling red wine in his hand, maybe beauties of various races were by his side, maybe an inscrutable smile played on his lips, maybe...

But one thing was absolutely impossible: forgiveness. He would not spare these lowly ants. He would not spare these Earth creatures who were comrades just moments ago. He would not spare these humans and mutant beasts being toyed with. He would not spare the cruel thoughts in his heart.

”What should we do?” Sun Ruixing, standing next to Wen Yu, spoke in a low voice.

Wen Yu’s lips moved, but he was speechless for a long time.

What should I do? What can I do? What *should* I do? What *can* I do?

”I won’t attack you! Yes, I won’t attack you,” Sun Ruixing muttered, as if to himself. He slowly turned and walked towards the edge of the barrier.

He’s running away; it’s the only thing he can do!

Wen Yu tilted his head, watching Sun Ruixing’s slightly hunched figure recede into the distance. Anger and despair deepened in his eyes.

Attack Sun Ruixing? That was something I desperately wanted to avoid! I’m not a good person, but I’m certainly not irredeemably evil. Sun Ruixing has shown me kindness and loyalty; I know and understand this clearly.

But!

”I want to survive! I want... to... survive!”

My only wish after my rebirth in this apocalyptic world... it seems so pale and insignificant in the face of reality! Morality, gratitude, and life! This is a test from the Dominator—or perhaps, a mockery! And it’s the most difficult choice imaginable.

...

On the calm battlefield, the atmosphere grew increasingly oppressive. Even the sounds of heavy breathing gradually became faint.

Kill or be killed—this choice was sometimes brutally simple.

When one professionist raised his sword and cut down the mutant beast beside him, the situation inevitably slid into the abyss.

Chaos first erupted on the outer edges of the battlefield. This area was mostly populated by less powerful professionists or mutant beasts. They were also the first to succumb to the terrifying pressure.

Some mutant beasts frantically tore at the corpses on the ground, whether they belonged to the Human Race, other mutant beasts, or the Demon Tribe.

Some professionists stormed towards the Exchange Stone Pillar. They did it to enhance their abilities, hoping to be the last one standing.

Wen Yu quietly watched the creatures around him gradually descend into madness. After a moment, he let out a bitter laugh.

The Touch of Greed extended from his hand. Simultaneously, he recalled Cyclops, his gaze on the frenzied creatures growing increasingly cold.

When killing becomes inevitable, all I can do—my only option—is to kill!

His Touch of Greed quickly slashed at a Level Three Black Bear to his side. The immense force ripped open the Black Bear’s belly, its entrails spilling out. Then, Wen Yu plunged the Touch of Greed in his right hand directly into the Black Bear’s head.

This Level Three Black Bear had just killed a Demon Fiend of the same level and was considerably wounded. Faced with Wen Yu’s sudden attack, it had no power to fight back.

The Black Bear’s roar died in its throat. Its lifeless eyes still held a mixture of doubt, disbelief, despair, and countless other emotions.

There were so many emotions in its eyes... I can’t bear to look again! Comrades just moments ago... now enemies!

...

”What are you doing?”

As soon as Wen Yu killed the Black Bear, Little Dragon, who was not far away, immediately reacted, roaring at Wen Yu.

The roar was so loud it made Wen Yu’s ears tingle and effectively intimidated the chaotic professionists and mutant beasts nearby.

Wen Yu calmly pulled the Touch of Greed from the Black Bear’s head and stared intently into Little Dragon’s somewhat confused eyes.

”I’m fighting! I’m killing! I’m struggling! What do you think I’m doing?”

”I’m trying my best, doing everything I can to save my own life!” Wen Yu’s voice trembled despite himself.

He closed his eyes briefly, but the image of the Black Bear’s eyes kept flashing in his mind.

It was intelligent, not at all dim-witted. Those eyes... they seemed to ask: Didn’t you find us? Didn’t you lead us to defeat the Demon Fiend? Weren’t we just fighting side-by-side? I understood. And that understanding only intensified my torment.

”But, it’s a friend!” Little Dragon’s voice interrupted Wen Yu’s thoughts.

”Yes, it was a friend.”

”Killing friend... not right.”

”I know. But right now, of all the creatures you can see, only one can survive!”

Silence descended, heavy and oppressive.

The Dominator’s method of communication involved a direct psychic link, so even Little Dragon, with its level of understanding, could clearly grasp the meaning of the Dominator’s words.

But...

Little Dragon slowly lay down on the ground.

At the same time, a Spiritual Fluctuation transmitted into Wen Yu’s mind.

”Grandpa Tree... once said...”

”Powerful experts... are born... to protect... the weak!”

”I always... grew up... in Grandpa Tree’s... belly... always... absorbing... Grandpa Tree’s... power!”

”But... I know... that is not... Grandpa Tree’s own... strength!”

”That is... the power... of this land!”

”I... come from... this land. I... am... the king... of this land! I... was born... to protect!”

”They... are all children... of this land. They... are all my... kin!”

”My purpose... is not... to kill... but to protect!”

”To harm them... I cannot... do it!”

The look in Little Dragon’s eyes slowly changed from initial anger and confusion to its current firm resolve.

Then, Little Dragon gently closed its eyes.

”They’ll kill you! Whether it’s Humans or mutant creatures!” Wen Yu said in a voice only the two of them could hear.

The giant dragon head nodded gently twice, indicating to Wen Yu that it understood.

”There’s nothing wrong with fighting to survive,” Wen Yu said.

Little Dragon slowly shook its head.

”You don’t understand... There are always... things more important... than living!”

Wen Yu sighed and nodded. He was about to say something else but was interrupted by a rather sharp shout.

”Let’s stop killing each other! That man and that dragon are the strongest! If we don’t kill them, none of us will survive!”

Hearing this voice, Wen Yu finally looked around. The surroundings were now crowded with professionists and a small number of mutant creatures.

It was impossible to tell where the voice had come from, but one look at the slightly bloodshot eyes of the surrounding creatures was enough to know. Nearly all of them agreed with this sentiment.

Given that only one could survive, uniting the weak to eliminate the strong was an effective strategy. Initially, the weaker individuals killing each other was merely an instinct to eliminate competitors. But once the majority of humans understood the situation, any powerful expert would inevitably face a siege from the masses. The actions of humans would also guide the behavior of mutant beasts; after mutating, these animals possessed enough intelligence to understand human intentions.

Wen Yu, at the center of the encirclement, saw the murderous intent around him flare up even more intensely. He turned his head to look at Little Dragon, still lying motionless on the ground with its eyes closed. After a moment, he whispered, ”Since you’ve made up your mind, good luck!”
