Apocalypse: Master of Soul Beasts

Chapter 182: Chapter 138 Night Talk (Third update!)”_1

Night enveloped Chaihe Town. Wen Yu sat quietly on the top floor of a residential building in the gathering point, looking out at the deathly silent small town and, in the distance, the Demon Realm’s Gate.

”What’s on your mind?” a familiar voice asked from behind. It was Sun Ruixing.

”Nothing,” Wen Yu answered without turning his head.

Sun Ruixing walked over to Wen Yu, put down the plastic bag he was holding, took out a can of beer, and handed it to him.

Wen Yu raised an eyebrow as Sun Ruixing took out another can of beer for himself.

”Didn’t I say I’d come out and drink with you? Things have been hectic, so you might have forgotten, but I didn’t!” Sun Ruixing tilted his head back, drained his can in one gulp, and then shrugged at Wen Yu.

”TSK, TSK. I really did forget!” Wen Yu sighed and shook his head.

After returning to the camp, first there were issues with Zhang Wenhu, and then problems concerning the battlefield between the two realms. It was all enough to make Wen Yu overlook such ”trivial” matters.

”Wait for me, I’ll go buy some more supplies.” With that, Wen Yu jumped straight down from the rooftop.

Seven stories wasn’t a significant height for a Third-level professionist.

A short while later, Wen Yu returned, carrying a large pile of food and alcoholic drinks.

”Alright, this should be enough food and drink for the two of us. Cyclops, go keep watch.”

”WOOF.”

”You never include me in the good stuff...” Cyclops grumbled but still ambled over to the rooftop stairwell entrance.

Poor Cyclops, once again relegated to being the night watchman.

”Now we can drink. With Cyclops on watch, we don’t have to worry about getting too drunk.”

Wen Yu opened a bottle of Stone Pillar-produced spirits and took a large swig.

For a time, the only sound between them was the gurgle of swallowing drinks. Neither spoke.

After a long pause, Sun Ruixing stared at the towering Demon Realm’s Gate in the distance and murmured, as if to himself, ”How many of us do you think will survive this time?”

Wen Yu shook his head. ”I don’t know. But probably not many.”

”That’s what I think too.” Sun Ruixing sighed and took another sip of his drink.

Having personally experienced the power of the Demon Tribe, Sun Ruixing was deeply pessimistic about the outcome of the upcoming battle between the two realms.

”Do you think... this time, it’s my fault? If I hadn’t stopped Zhang Lifei from killing Bai Feifei...”

Wen Yu shook his head. ”Don’t dwell on it. In the current situation, all we can do is fight. There’s no point thinking about anything else,” Wen Yu said, trying to comfort him.

”I can’t help but think about these things. If it weren’t for this damn apocalypse, I’d probably still be living an ordinary life. In a few more years, I would have been holding my grandchild. Thinking about it now, sometimes, a simple life really is the best.”

Sun Ruixing sighed and drained his bottle.

”Yes, a simple life is the best.”

”Haha, I never expected you to say that, brother,” Sun Ruixing said, his somber mood suddenly lifting. He wrapped an arm around Wen Yu’s shoulder and laughed. ”I think you’re well-suited to this world. You’re strong, unburdened by unrelated affairs, and more importantly, you have no attachments!”

Hearing Sun Ruixing’s words, Wen Yu quietly took a sip of his drink, then tossed the half-eaten chicken wing in his hand far into the distance.

”I hate it too, you know!” Wen Yu said with a smile, but then his voice suddenly grew heavy.

”Actually, no one is suited to this world. This fucked-up world!

”If I could go back to my old life, I would. Back then, even though I had no goals, no direction, at least I didn’t have to worry about how I was going to survive each day!

”Since the apocalypse began, I don’t know how many times I’ve nearly died, only to stubbornly pull through.

”I wouldn’t fight if I didn’t have to. But more than that, I want to live.

”We have to fight, have to struggle, have to become stronger!

”That’s the reality for all survivors right now.

”But this isn’t living. Life shouldn’t just be about killing and getting stronger. This is merely surviving. Barely clinging to existence!”

Hearing Wen Yu’s words, Sun Ruixing sighed softly. ”When will days like these ever end?”

”Maybe when there’s no one left who can threaten our safety. That’s when this kind of life will finally be over.

”For now, let’s not dwell on it. Let’s finish these drinks. The day after tomorrow, we’ll unleash hell on those Demon Bastards!”

”Alright! This old brother will join you in annihilating them!” Sun Ruixing declared.

Wen Yu drained the liquor in his mouth.

”To our survival!” he toasted.

”We’ll definitely survive! I still want to live to see my grandson!” Sun Ruixing vowed.

「By dawn」

Wen Yu and Sun Ruixing finished their all-night drinking session. Regrettably, due to their powerful professionist physiques, they hardly felt the effects of the alcohol.

Sun Ruixing had already returned to his room to rest, leaving Wen Yu alone on the rooftop, still watching the scenery below.

In the distance, the Demon Realm’s Gate flickered with a dim, ominous black light—a clear warning to everyone that battle was imminent.

Wen Yu stood up and stretched lazily, easing the fatigue from the long night.

”Cyclops.”

Hearing Wen Yu’s voice, Cyclops, who had been lying at the stairwell entrance, scampered over.

”Go find the Giant Dragon. There’s only one day left until the Demon Realm’s Gate opens. Make sure all the mutant creatures are ready by tomorrow.”

Cyclops nodded and immediately ran downstairs.

”Wait! And don’t be late,” Wen Yu couldn’t help but call out another reminder.

”WOOF, WOOF.”

”Understood, Boss! You can count on me.”

Seeing Wen Yu nod without further comment, Cyclops immediately darted off towards the woods.

It was no wonder Wen Yu felt apprehensive; the significance of these reinforcements was immense!

Wen Yu knew very well from his previous life what the existence of the mutant beasts meant for humankind!

They were humanity’s allies, even their protectors!

Taking this current crisis alone, without the power of the mutant beasts, Wen Yu and all the professionists in Chaihe Town would have absolutely no chance of survival!

Seeing that the Chaihe Town gathering point was now bustling with activity, Wen Yu contemplated for a moment, then jumped off the rooftop and hurried towards it.

「In the gathering point」

Zhang Wenhu, awake since early morning, was already organizing people to establish a defensive perimeter.

Although Zhang Wenhu disagreed with Wen Yu on whether to abandon the gathering point, it didn’t mean he underestimated the danger posed by the Demon Realm’s Gate.

Caution was the key to survival!

The barriers and defensive measures Zhang Wenhu had established clearly showed how seriously he was taking this battle between the two realms.

All sorts of debris were piled up, firmly barricading the area in front of the Demon Realm’s Gate. The 50-meter radius around the gate was littered with traps and gasoline bombs.

These were just the first course of the welcoming feast prepared for the Demon Tribe’s creatures!

The camp was filled with various defensive measures; Zhang Wenhu had transformed this small gathering point into a fortress.

Or perhaps, a seal. A seal specifically targeting the Demon Realm’s Gate.

Unfortunately, in Wen Yu’s eyes, these little tricks were riddled with flaws.

Amidst the bustling crowd, Wen Yu found Zhang Wenhu.

”Brother Wen Yu.” Seeing Wen Yu, Zhang Wenhu greeted him with a smile. He exchanged a few words with Li Shanlin, who was beside him, and then walked over to Wen Yu.

”What brings Brother Wen Yu here today?”
