Chapter 498: Chapter 70: The Trial Ends

Su Xiao aimed at the Dark King’s eye socket, the long knife penetrating the already blind eyeball of the Dark King, reaching deep into the brain.

The Dark King twitched like a dead fish out of water, unable to move.

The Blue Steel Shadow ability continued to be unleashed, and after more than ten seconds, the Dark King’s nervous system collapsed, yet still, it did not die.

Bu Bu Wang also charged forward, biting and scratching, while Su Xiao slashed one blow after another.

Due to his severe injuries, Su Xiao collapsed onto the ground after only a few slashes.

Two minutes later, Bu Bu Wang retreated to the side, baring its teeth; the Dark King’s skin was too tough for it to bite through.

Su Xiao rested for a while and then got up, the Dragon Slash in his hand blooming with a blue glow. The Blue Steel Shadow had been active for ten minutes, and the Magical Power Explosion effect appeared.

With one slash, under the terrifying true damage bonus, this blow severed the Dark King’s throat.

[You killed the leader-level creature Dark King Minas]

[Dark King Minas is a key figure in the Devouring Island, gaining 16% World Source, now totaling 34% World Source.]

[You obtained the Demon’s Box.]

...

The notification of killing the Dark King had just appeared when a scorching sensation came from the back of Su Xiao’s hand.

It was a blood-red cross mark, the ability he obtained after Water City ended, [Devil’s Mark].

Devil’s Mark: Lv.2 (Passive Skill)

Skill Effect 1: Adds 13 points of true damage when attacking.

Skill Effect 2: Can upgrade the Devil’s Mark level by sacrificing equipment. You have reached an agreement with a high-level demon.

...

[High-level demon power detected, Devil’s Mark activated, devouring demon power...]

The blood-red mark on the back of Su Xiao’s hand flickered, and a wisp of black smoke drifted out from the Dark King’s corpse.

The smoke was pure black, seemingly able to devour all light, it was the purest demon power.

The demon power was gradually devoured by the Devil’s Mark, the Dark King’s corpse quickly shriveled, and large cracks appeared on its tough skin.

Su Xiao wasn’t worried about changes in the Devil’s Mark. The mark was on his body surface, with Blue Steel Shadow energy present, the demon power couldn’t enter his body.

[Devil’s Mark has been upgraded to Lv.3.]

[Devil’s Mark has been upgraded to Lv.4.]

[Devil’s Mark has been upgraded to Lv.5.]

[Devil’s Mark has been upgraded to Lv.6.]

[Devil’s Mark has been upgraded to Lv.7!]

The Devil’s Mark ceased leveling after rising 5 levels. If it were upgraded by sacrificing equipment, these 5 levels would bankrupt Su Xiao.

Checking the attributes of the Devil’s Mark, Su Xiao raised an eyebrow.

Devil’s Mark: Lv.7 (Passive Skill)

Skill Effect 1: Adds 28 points of true damage when attacking.

Skill Effect 2: Can upgrade the Devil’s Mark level by sacrificing equipment. You have reached an agreement with a high-level demon.

...

The Lv.7 Devil’s Mark was very strong, adding 28 points of true damage. Although melee was required to add true damage, Su Xiao’s main ability, Blue Steel Shadow, only caused 50 points of true damage.

According to Su Xiao’s observation, the tier position of true damage was very high, having properties like ignoring physical defense.

Su Xiao put away the Demon’s Box dropped by the Dark King. He didn’t have many healing items, and his injuries weren’t just about recovering Life Value; he needed to hide quickly, as this was the depths of the Black Forest.

Scanning his surroundings, aside from trees and stones, Su Xiao’s gaze locked onto the well where the Dark King had been.

This was an excellent hiding spot.

”Bu Bu, scout it out.”

Bu Bu Wang’s face cringed, shaking its head quickly, its gaze seeming to say: ”Master, I just peed in there.”

”No worries, with this deep well, we’ll hide midway.”

Reluctantly, Bu Bu Wang approached the well, sniffing inside. There was no smell. After listening closely for a while, it was silent from below.

Su Xiao threw the Dark King’s corpse down the well and cleaned up the battle traces nearby.

Standing by the several-meters-thick well, Su Xiao contemplated for a moment. He chopped down a dozen large trees nearby and tossed the thick trunks into the well.

Bu Bu Wang looked much more relaxed, while Su Xiao used his right hand to pull out the Boundary Line and lowered Bu Bu Wang.

”Woof.”

The bark echoed from below, and Su Xiao also used the Boundary Line to enter the well.

Standing on a tree trunk about two meters in diameter, Su Xiao leaned against the well wall. He needed rest now, as multiple bone fractures and massive blood loss made him drowsy.

The vertical shaft is a safe point in the Black Forest, and it won’t be eroded by the Source of Black Mist. The fact that the Dark King chose to slumber here shows how safe it is. The Wild Boar was lucky to find this vertical shaft; otherwise, Su Xiao would have had some difficulty locating the Dark King.

Food and fresh water are abundant, allowing Su Xiao and Bu Wang to hide in the vertical shaft for a long time.

The sky darkened, and the black mist surrounding the Black Forest gradually thinned.

Su Xiao was too severely injured, often remaining semi-conscious in the vertical shaft. If not for the Ice and Snow Goddess’ Aura and the ”Vitality” skill from the Scabbard’s Divine Spirit Afterglow, he might have died from his severe injuries. The ribs piercing his organs were too fatal.

Gift of the Ice and Snow Goddess (Aura): Generates an aura of the Ice and Snow Goddess, restoring 1 point of life value per second to allies. No cost, restoration effect increases with the Intelligence Attribute.

Vitality (Passive): Restores 10 points of life value and 0.5 points of mana value per minute.

These two abilities kept Su Xiao from dying from his severe injuries. To fully recover from his current condition, he would need extremely potent healing items or a return to Reincarnation Paradise.

Time swiftly passed. Su Xiao woke up for the fourth time in the vertical shaft. Though his chest felt heavy and breathing was difficult, he was temporarily out of mortal danger.

Checking the trial’s remaining time, Su Xiao was taken aback.

[Remaining survival time: 7 hours, number of contractors surviving: 61]

”I’ve been unconscious for nearly three days. Thought I was done for.”

Su Xiao checked his status, and at the bottom of the status list were some small, blood-red words.

[Severe injury status]

He hadn’t expected the Dark King to be so strong; this was a lesson. In the future, he must not rashly enter areas with difficulty above Level 20, though soloing a BOSS was thrilling.

Checking the hidden task, it showed a completed status, but it couldn’t be completed here. This wasn’t the Derivative World; rather, it was the Trial World. The hidden task’s reward would be settled after returning to Reincarnation Paradise.

Su Xiao didn’t plan to leave. The fact that this vertical shaft, while located in the Black Forest, was mysteriously safe was well-proven.

...

Ordinary area, on the grasslands.

It was very bustling here, with a large group of wild beasts fleeing desperately. An overwhelming number of undead poured out from the Black Forest. Not only were there undead, but several beings similar to the Dark King had fully awakened.

Over 90% of the surviving contractors fled into the Red Soil Area; the ordinary area had become the territory of the undead.

Three hours later, the ordinary area was completely invaded by the undead, with skeletons of devoured wild beasts everywhere, fresh blood still on the bones.

At the stone bridge linking the Red Soil Area and the ordinary area, innumerable undead stood before the bridge, not daring to move an inch forward.

An entirely pale elder walked out from the undead, not only bald but without eyebrows or a beard.

”Why is it not allowed for us to pass?”

The elder resembled a human but was, in fact, of the Void Race. Including the Dark King, the strong in the Black Forest were all prisoners exiled to Devouring Island from the Void.

Mr. Mouse stood on the stone bridge. He didn’t even make a move, just stood there.

”Because I said so, that’s why.”

The black mist around the Black Forest dissipated, as the difficulty of Devouring Island far exceeded trial difficulties. Therefore, Mr. Mouse stood out under the instruction of Reincarnation Paradise; otherwise, the number of surviving contractors would not exceed ten.

The pale elder looked at Mr. Mouse.

”You...”

”Stop talking nonsense. Just answer whether you will scram or not.”

Mr. Mouse looked sideways at the pale elder. He had seen such situations too many times.

The pale elder clenched his fists but was interrupted by Mr. Mouse before he could speak.

”Have you forgotten...”

Mr. Mouse’s voice grew quieter, but the pale elder’s body shook slightly, and his expression showed some fear.

”In three hours, you can attack the Red Soil Area at will. For now, scram!”

Mr. Mouse shouted loudly, and the pale elder turned around and left reluctantly, not daring to say more. Mr. Mouse wasn’t frightening, but the one backing him was terrifying.

Under Mr. Mouse’s suppression, three hours quickly passed, and 36 contractors survived amidst the chaos.

people landed on the island, 36 survived, with a survival trial rate of less than one-tenth.

...

Red Soil Area, within a valley.

Umbrella Brother leaned against a rock wall, next to Old Bar, who had been dead for some time.

”Cough, cough, cough—”

Umbrella Brother coughed up multiple mouthfuls of fresh blood, his eyes filled with unwillingness.

”Little Confused, you were the one hiding the deepest all along.”

Umbrella Brother glanced at his two severed arms, let out a bitter smile. They were supposed to succeed in stopping the dissipation of the black mist by delving into the Skeleton Cave, but unfortunately...

...

Inside the vertical shaft of Black Forest, Su Xiao waited for the trial to end.

[Remaining survival time: 0 hours, number of contractors surviving: 36, survival trial ended.]
