Apocalyptic Reincarnation: Start with a 30-million Bonus

The sky gradually darkened, and before long, it was 6:10 PM.

At this time, everyone in the base was dining, and Uncle Qin and his party had just moved things from outside to the Outer City.

He Chao also received notification from Li Yu and warmly received Uncle Qin and He Bing, introducing them to some of the basic facilities in the Outer City, and arranging their rooms.

After finding out that Uncle Qin and his party had arrived, Li Yu also hurried to the Outer City to greet them.

In the Outer City, the central lights illuminated the surroundings so that the people there could see some of the things around them.

Uncle Qin and He Bing were busily moving the luggage they had brought over and setting up their rooms.

Li Yu also brought some basic life necessities, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, blankets, clothes, and the food and items that Uncle Qin and others had earned from their contributions on missions.

...

Meanwhile, elsewhere.

About 5 kilometers south of the national highway from the base, seven or eight vehicles were driving towards the Big Camphor Tree Base.

The sun had set, the sky had darkened, and they had their headlights on, which were highly visible on the national highway.

On a building next to the highway, a duty officer from the Big Camphor Tree Base, who was on watch, was yawning, feeling the fatigue of spring sleepiness and summer lethargy, wanting to doze off.

Suddenly, when he saw the distant headlights, he was startled and became much more alert.

”How could there be someone coming at this time?!” he muttered to himself. Shaking awake the companion who was sleeping beside him, he said, ”Wake up, wake up, there’s something going on.”

His companion, who was fast asleep and drooling, gestured with his hand and turned over to continue sleeping.

They worked in two shifts, and since his companion had been on duty for 12 hours the previous day, it was normal for him to be tired.

Feeling impatient for a moment, he sighed, then picked up the telescope on the balcony, and ran outside to look at the vehicles.

The vehicles were moving fast, possibly because some zombies were following them, so they were traveling at high speed.

In the brief moment since he had noticed them, all he could see was their taillights.

”Damn!” He punched the wall, but seemed to be careful not to make too much noise and disturb the zombies that had just been chasing the vehicles.

Then he cautiously checked his surroundings to ensure he hadn’t attracted the attention of the zombies, and only then did he breathe a sigh of relief.

The duty officers stationed outside chose their locations with two main criteria in mind: first, to be on the edge of the national highway, able to see the conditions on the highway at any time; second, the building had to be tall, with solid protection on the lower floors.

They were few in number, so they wouldn’t attract many zombies. In case of a large-scale zombie onslaught, they could call for help from the base, but so far, there had been no major issues.

Watching the taillights disappear into the distance, he immediately took out his walkie-talkie to report to the base: ”This is the duty officer on the south side of the national highway, seven vehicles have just passed by on the highway, heading north.”

At this moment, Li Yu was joking with He Bing, smiling: ”He Bing, I heard you are good at vehicle modifications. You’ll have to modify our vehicles sometime.”

He Bing blushed slightly, and said seriously: ”No problem, I guarantee to complete the mission!”

Li Yu appreciated his serious demeanor, liking people who were serious about their work. He was about to offer some words of encouragement when his earpiece crackled with a voice.

Hearing the words of the duty officer stationed in the south, Li Yu’s expression tightened slightly.

There were people!

So he immediately asked, ”Did you get a clear look at the people? Do you recognize them?”

The duty officer said, ”They were moving too fast, we couldn’t see clearly. There are seven cars with their headlights on, being chased by zombies behind them.”

Li Yu frowned and looked to the north.

Their destination might not necessarily be the Big Camphor Tree Base, but it was a possibility; at their rate of speed, it would take less than 10 minutes to pass the duty point on the north side of the national highway.

So he spoke to the duty officers in the south, ”Alright, keep monitoring.”

Then he contacted the duty point on the northern national highway, briefed them, and asked them to keep a close eye out to see if the seven vehicles would pass by later on.

After arranging all of this, Li Yu glanced around. He Bing, Uncle Qin, and others were watching him, while He Chao next to them was already prepared to join him on the perimeter wall.

Li Yu said, ”It’s fine, you guys continue with your tasks. He Chao, come up the wall with me.”

After speaking, he briefed Uncle, the officer on duty, about the situation, and raised the base’s alert status by two levels. Gradually, 30 people climbed onto the walls of the base.

Li Yu checked the timetable, estimated the speed of the vehicles, and figured that if their destination was the Big Camphor Tree Base, they should arrive within five minutes. If not, they would pass the duty point on the north side of the national highway after ten minutes.

They waited. Everyone loaded their bullets into the magazines, poised for the arrival of the vehicles.

...

On the highway, inside the car.

Xiao Shi looked at the darkening sky anxiously, but there was nothing she could do. They should have arrived by now according to the journey.

However, they only had a paper map, a national edition at that, which led them on many detours until they hit the 319 national highway, where Xiao Shi was certain of their direction.

Suddenly, Xiao Shi focused intently in one direction, a direction she was familiar with—the gas station! Not only was she familiar with this place, but so were the people from the Big Camphor Tree Base.

”Captain Luo, it’s just ahead. Not far in front, there’s a country road. We can go through there,” Xiao Shi said, suppressing her excitement.

Captain Luo looked around. The dark sky made it hard to see clearly. He had only been here once and was not familiar with the area, made worse by the darkness.

But he trusted Xiao Shi, so he said, ”Good, we’ve finally arrived! It’s been so hard. Ah, Director Li once gave me a walkie-talkie, but it was broken during the last Zombie Tide, otherwise, we could have tried to contact them with it. It wouldn’t be like this now...”

Xiao Shi comforted him, ”It’s okay, Uncle Luo, we’ll be there soon.”

Old Luo glanced at Old Yi and Old Bi in the cars behind, speaking with some uncertainty, ”Although I had contact with Director Li for some time, it was very brief, and I don’t know much about him. What if they don’t accept us when we just rush over there?”

Xiao Shi said confidently, ”Uncle Luo, don’t worry. Based on what I know about the base and him, he will definitely accept us.”

Old Luo looked at the confident Xiao Shi, feeling a mix of emotions, unsure of what to say. Based on his previous experience with the Big Camphor Tree Base, he also had a favorable impression of Li Yu, but he was somewhat uncertain about being able to deliver on the half of the food supplies they had agreed to share at the military base.

After all, it’s food. If they go back on their word, they have no recourse. They couldn’t win a fight...

Sigh...

Leave it to fate.

Hopefully, Director Li would not disappoint him.

The vehicles quickly reached the country road. The zombies, due to the slowing speed of the cars, were gathering in more significant numbers behind them.

They entered the country road and slowly made their way to the edge of the base’s forest.

The roaring of the vehicles was heard by everyone on the base’s walls. For a moment, those at the base’s gate gripped their guns tightly.

Ding Jiu sat behind the Heavy Machine Gun, aiming at the entrance.
