Chapter 148: Showdown at the Citrus Stadium (2)

”What a pity, I didn’t expect that Gengar to know Destiny Bond,” Tracy lamented.

”He probably saw that Psyduck was very strong, so he was forced to use Destiny Bond, but Psyduck taking out three of his Pokémon means Misty has already gained a lot.”

The first two matches had actually taken a heavy toll on Psyduck, even if Gengar hadn’t used Destiny Bond, at most by the fourth round, Misty would have had to switch Pokémon.

If Ash remembered correctly, among the three remaining Pokémon of Drake, besides the ace Dragonite, there were also Onix and Venusaur. Onix against Misty was undoubtedly a free win, while Venusaur, with its type advantage, would be a major challenge.

”Trainer Drake’s three Pokémon have lost their ability to battle. We will now have a fifteen-minute halftime break. The next arena will be a desert arena, challengers please take note!” the Host reminded.

Misty returned to the resting area where Ash and the others were.

Ash gave Misty a thumbs-up, ”Misty, you did great!”

”Misty is really amazing, one Psyduck defeated three of the opponent’s Pokémon,” Serena also praised.

”The next one will be a tough fight. He still has an ace Dragonite that hasn’t been sent out,” Tracy reminded.

”Dragonite? It should be fine, I believe my Milotic will definitely win!”

Misty said confidently.

Ash had told her last night what level Drake’s Dragonite was at—Elite Intermediate—while her Milotic had long reached Elite Advanced. She had a level advantage, and her ice-type moves were also highly proficient.

Soon, the halftime break ended, and the two returned to the battle arena.

”My next Pokémon is it!”

Drake was the first to send out his Pokémon.

”Wow, our chief Trainer Drake has sent out Onix!”

Pokémon: Onix

Type: Rock + Ground

Level: Gym Intermediate

Ability: Sturdy (Even if attacked by an opponent’s move, it will not be knocked out in one hit. One-hit KO moves also have no effect.)

”Alright, then my Pokémon is it, come out, Gyarados!”

Misty sent out the Gyarados she had caught on Sweet Orange Island. This Gyarados was Gym Advanced when caught, and its Ability was its hidden Ability: Moxie. (PS: The capture process was briefly mentioned in Chapter 146)

”Is it still water-type?”

Seeing Gyarados, Drake was a bit puzzled. Could this be a Trainer specializing in water-types?

If he had known Misty specialized in water-types earlier, he would have swapped out his Pokémon, no matter what.

”Gyarados, use Rain Dance!”

Gyarados twisted its body, and water-type energy converged rapidly. In just a few seconds, Rain Dance was completed, and light rain began to fall in the arena, wetting the desert arena. The raindrops hitting Onix made it very uncomfortable.

”Onix, use Stone Edge!”

Unable to switch Pokémon, Drake could only make Onix attack despite its discomfort.

Under the influence of the rain, Onix’s attack was affected. The sharp Rocks it launched were easily dispersed by Gyarados using Water Gun.

”Gyarados, use Dragon Dance!”

Rain Dance was already complete, and Misty didn’t plan to switch Pokémon, so she wanted to take advantage of the current situation, stack some buffs first, and then unleash her Dragonite in one go.

Gyarados twisted its body, performing a fierce, mysterious dance.

”Onix, use Heavy Slam!”

Onix raised its head and roared, then twisted its body and charged towards Gyarados.

”Gyarados, use Hydro Pump!” Misty urgently shouted.

Onix’s attack was fierce, but the desert arena was wet, and its movement speed was already slow. Coupled with the arena conditions, it was doused unconscious by a water stream as thick as a bucket before it even reached Gyarados.

”Onix has lost its ability to battle!”

After recalling Onix, Drake, without thinking, sent out his next major player: ”My next contender is it, Venusaur!”

Pokémon: Venusaur

Type: Grass + Poison

Level: Gym Advanced

Ability: Overgrow (When HP is low, the power of Grass-type moves increases.)

”Is he switching to a Grass-type now? It seems this chief Trainer’s team is quite balanced,” Tracy exclaimed.

”It is indeed very balanced. Coupled with his Dragonite, it’s no wonder he’s dominated the Orange Islands for so long. But that’s only in the Orange Islands. If he went to other regions, at best he’d be a good Trainer.”

Ash felt quite sorry for Drake. He had advantages that others didn’t, but he just stayed in a small place, unwilling to go out and explore.

There are many resources in the ocean, but the Orange Islands are so small that resources are relatively limited, and the Trainer levels are uneven. Only two of the four Gyms are helpful for improving combat experience, and while the other two, which focus on move clashes, do offer some combat improvement, it’s not significant.

So, hiding in such a small place as a chief Trainer is truly a waste of his talent.

Better to be the head of a chicken than the tail of a phoenix. Considering the Pokémon Drake has, his development and achievements in other regions might not be worse than others; he would be at least a Gym Leader.

”Venusaur, use Vine Whip.”

”Gyarados, use Dragon Pulse!”

Under the boost of Dragon Dance, Gyarados’s speed increased greatly. Dragon Pulse shot out, pushing back the Vine Whip Venusaur extended.

”Gyarados, get close to it now!”

Misty gave a risky command. Venusaur had a type advantage, and if Gyarados got entangled by Vine Whip, this battle would be dangerous.

”Coming right to me? Then I won’t be polite. Venusaur, use Leech Seed!”

A brown seed condensed on the flower on Venusaur’s back.

”Gyarados, use Flamethrower!”

Misty had Gyarados approach actively precisely for a close-range fire-type move, as using fire-type moves from a distance in rainy weather would greatly reduce their power.

A scorching flame shot out, instantly turning Venusaur’s Leech Seed into Ash, and even scorching the flower on Venusaur’s back quite a bit.

Feeling the intense heat, Venusaur couldn’t help but fall into a panic, its limbs sinking into the ground with force.

”Gyarados, now, use Psybeam to freeze its limbs.”

Gyarados shot a pure white beam from its wide mouth, and Venusaur’s water-soaked limbs were firmly frozen.

”Venusaur, break free quickly!” Drake shouted anxiously.

Venusaur’s body was already quite large, and he hadn’t trained Venusaur to be a mobile cannon. Being a sitting duck in this situation was the most dangerous.

Drake’s Pokémon training and battle habits were actually quite similar to Ash’s; both preferred a fast-paced offensive style. Even his Onix was trained with a focus on speed.

Hearing its Trainer, Venusaur exerted all its might and managed to pull out one of its hind legs.

”I’m really sorry, but you don’t have that chance. Gyarados, use Fire Blast!”

Boom!

”Venusaur has lost its ability to battle!”

”Wow, Trainer Misty, using only two Pokémon, has pushed our chief Trainer Drake into a desperate situation! Next, let’s see if Trainer Drake will send out Dragonite to join the battle!” the Host exclaimed loudly.
