Chapter 147: Showdown at the Citrus Stadium (1)

The next day, 10 AM.

The Citrus Coliseum was already packed to the brim. The news of the Orange League Champion’s Cup being held had been broadcast across the entire island yesterday after Misty completed her registration. Coupled with the fact that no one had collected all four gym badges to challenge the Gym in a long time, the island residents were all very enthusiastic.

However, to Ash, this might have been because the Citrus Coliseum matches didn’t require tickets, so everyone on the island came to join the fun.

Host: ”This is the Citrus Coliseum, welcoming a new challenger! The atmosphere inside the Coliseum is fervent and excited... Drake, the strongest chief Trainer of the Orange League’s Southern Cross, is here! Will this challenger, Misty, be able to overcome his powerful Pokémon and become someone worthy of entering the Champion’s Hall?”

Drake looked at Misty, extending his hand and saying, ”Miss Misty, let’s have a match today with no regrets!”

”Mr. Drake, please guide me!” Misty extended her hand, shook it symbolically, and then released it.

”The rules of the match are 6 versus 6. When three of either side’s Pokémon are unable to battle, the battleground will change.

During the battle, the chief Trainer’s Pokémon will not be swapped, but the challenger’s Pokémon can be freely swapped.”

As the referee announced the rules, the initial Rock and Water battleground slowly rose.

”This battle will test the judgment of the Pokemon Trainer,” the referee added.

Subsequently, both sides took their respective positions.

”My first Pokémon is it, Ditto!” Drake threw out his first Poké Ball.

[Pokémon: Ditto]

[Type: Normal]

[Level: Gym Intermediate]

[Ability: Imposter (Transforms into the Pokémon it is currently facing)]

”The Pokémon used by the chief Trainer is Ditto. Although its only unique move is its transformation ability, its versatile power is enough to toy with opponents, making it a formidable foe,” the Host enthusiastically stirred up the atmosphere in the arena.

”Ash, is Ditto really that strong?” Serena looked at Ash, somewhat confused.

”Ditto’s transformation ability indeed performs well against most Pokémon, but there are still differences in move sets and move proficiency. Misty will be fine,” Ash explained.

A Gym Intermediate Ditto wasn’t a big problem for Misty. While Ditto’s transformation ability was troublesome, there were still differences in the type bonuses of its moves and its proficiency with those moves.

”Ditto, huh? I need a Fighting-type to counter it. Alright, it’s your turn, Staryu!”

Misty threw out Psyduck’s Poké Ball.

Psyduck could learn quite a few Fighting-type moves, giving it an advantage against Ditto compared to her other Pokémon.

”Go, Misty!” Serena shouted.

”Ditto, transform!”

As Drake gave the command, Ditto transformed into Psyduck’s likeness. Although their appearances were identical, Ditto couldn’t imitate Psyduck’s wise gaze.

”Staryu, use Focus Punch!”

Misty didn’t intend to prolong the battle, so she immediately had Psyduck use a Fighting-type move.

Psyduck’s eyes changed, it took a deep breath, and with an arrogant stride, it rushed forward and landed a punch.

Ditto was hit squarely by the punch, rolling two and a half times, acquiring several scrapes on its body. Although the injuries were severe, it didn’t immediately lose its ability to battle.

”Psyduck actually used the Fighting-type move Focus Punch! Challenger Misty has raised Psyduck wonderfully. Using a Fighting-type move against a Normal-type Ditto is very effective.”

Drake hadn’t expected Misty’s Psyduck to know moves of other types, but Ditto clearly didn’t understand this. He could only say helplessly, ”Ditto, use Water Gun.”

The transformed Ditto opened its mouth and sprayed a stream of water at Psyduck.

Unfortunately, Psyduck was already a Water-type Pokémon, so Water-type moves hitting it were like a gentle massage.

”Staryu, use Zen Headbutt to finish it!”

Psyduck heard the command, its wise eyes glowed blue, and then Telekinesis condensed on its forehead. It shot forward, head-first, and crashed into Ditto’s head.

Thud!

This solid Headbutt knocked Ditto back to its original form, rendering it unable to battle.

”The winner of the first match is challenger Misty!”

”Miss Misty, your Psyduck is very well-trained. But how will you deal with the next one? Go, Electabuzz!”

Drake sent out his second Pokémon.

[Pokémon: Electabuzz]

[Type: Electric]

[Level: Gym Intermediate]

[Ability: Static (Has static electricity on its body, sometimes paralyzing opponents who make contact.)]

”An Electric-type Pokémon? Psyduck will be fine.”

Misty didn’t choose to switch Pokémon. Most of the Pokémon she carried were Water-type, and no matter which one, they would be at a disadvantage against an Electric-type.

”Staryu, hide behind the Rock and use Mud Shot.”

Directly taking on Electric-type moves would be more disadvantageous for itself. The countermeasure Misty could think of was to use the Rocks on the field to avoid Electabuzz’s moves as much as possible.

If Mud Shot could stick to Electabuzz’s face, it would affect its speed and accuracy.

”Trying to use the terrain? That’s a good tactic, but my Electabuzz isn’t that simple. Electabuzz, use Quick Attack.”

Electabuzz moved swiftly, dodging Psyduck’s attacks while continuously closing in on Psyduck.

”At this rate, it will eventually get close. No, it absolutely cannot get any closer! Staryu, use Disable!”

Electabuzz was disabled when it was less than three meters away from Psyduck. At the same time, its Quick Attack move was also banned due to Disable’s effect.

”Staryu, use Telekinesis to throw it back!”

Having been with Ash for so long, Misty had certainly grown. Psyduck’s Psychic-type move usage was mostly learned from Ash’s Gardevoir. Gardevoir’s Telekinesis development had long reached a masterful level. Although Psyduck hadn’t reached that level, it wasn’t something Electabuzz could mess with.

Poor Electabuzz, like a bag of trash, was heavily smashed by Psyduck using Telekinesis onto the Rock pillar on the field.

It tried to gain an advantage but ended up losing more. It didn’t close the distance much, and it took a lot of damage.

”Electabuzz is unable to battle!” the referee shouted, raising the flag.

”Wow, challenger Misty’s Psyduck has achieved a two-win streak! I wonder what Pokémon Drake will use next to counter her?”

”Your Pokémon are very strong, but I wonder how you’ll deal with this type. Go, Gengar!”

[Pokémon: Gengar]

[Type: Ghost/Poison]

[Level: Gym Advanced]

[Ability: Cursed Body (When attacked, sometimes causes the opponent’s move to become disabled.)]

”Is it a Ghost-type this time? But my Psyduck won’t lose!” Misty still had more confidence in her Psyduck.

After all, it had already defeated two, and Psychic-type moves also had an advantage against Gengar.

”Gengar, use Confuse Ray!”

Gengar flew into the air and stared wide-eyed at Psyduck.

Psyduck’s wise eyes immediately became dull, and its two hands tightly covered its head. Clearly, Gengar’s move had a significant impact on it.

”Staryu, quickly use Psyshock.”

Psyduck opened its mouth and emitted strange sound waves to counterattack.

Gengar, in its casting state, immediately interrupted its spell in discomfort, covering its head with both hands.

”Good, Staryu, use Psyshock now!”

”Gengar, use Destiny Bond!”

Psyduck’s Psyshock took down Gengar, and Gengar also completed its mission, forcefully taking down Psyduck.

”Wow! What a brilliant exchange! Drake actually had Gengar use the Destiny Bond move, resulting in a 1-for-1 trade with challenger Misty’s Psyduck.”
