ASOIAF: The Rise of House Ashenblade.

The public recognition of House Ashenblade’s new standing was set for ten days after Arlan returned from Storm’s End. Renly’s decree was already lawful. The ceremony at FireStorm had to give old villagers and the newly granted western hamlets one device they could recognize without pretending they shared the same history.

That created a problem Morton considered older than any new seal.

He brought the Ashenblade genealogy into the council room wrapped in faded leather and opened it beneath the lamps. The earliest pages had been recopied more than once, but the line of marcher service remained clear enough: generations posted near the Dornish Marches, watching roads and passes while greater houses fought over larger prizes.

”The old words were never formally erased,” Morton said. His finger rested beside a cramped line of brown ink. ”We Hold the Pass. Your grandfather still used them. Your father used them rarely, but he knew them.”

Arlan read the words twice. They suited the house that had survived before him. A tiny family on a dangerous frontier did not need a prophecy or a boast. It needed to remain standing when the next raiding party came over the ridge.

”They deserve to remain in the genealogy,” he said.

Morton looked up. ”But not on the new banners.”

”No.” The answer did not offend the old steward as much as Arlan expected; Morton closed his eyes briefly, then nodded. ”A house may remember its fathers without pretending nothing has changed.”

Rodrick spread several sheets of parchment across the other end of the table. FireStorm already possessed a recognizable badge that could be fixed without inventing a new lineage for the occasion: a silver sword wreathed in flame before a red sun, all on a storm-grey field.

Versions of the design already appeared on wax seals, shields, and trade crates, but the flames changed direction from one craftsman’s hand to another and merchants often mistook the red sun for the distillery mark. The grant forced a distinction: full arms for House Ashenblade, a plain red sun for ordinary goods.

”The sword stays silver,” Arlan said. ”The flames remain around it, not behind it. Red sun above and behind. Storm-grey field.”

Rodrick made the corrections while Morton watched closely. ”No dragon?”

”No dragon.”

That answer came faster. Whatever blood House Ashenblade carried in its distant past, advertising a dragon beneath Robert Baratheon’s nose would be spectacularly stupid even if Elton were not already inventing Targaryen accusations.

Cade studied the finished sketch. ”It looks like a marcher banner.”

”It should,” Brienne said. ”Not a merchant’s mark.”

The council returned to the motto only after the arms were fixed. Cade sat with both forearms on the table, Brienne remained beside the window, Bor had contributed mostly by rejecting anything he could not remember after hearing once, and Rodrick kept a growing pile of discarded phrases under his elbow.

Rodrick’s alternatives sounded either like threats to neighboring castles or promises no winter could respect. Cade wanted words audible over battle noise. Brienne refused anything a sworn sword would be ashamed to repeat. Morton defended We Hold the Pass, not because the old words were grand, but because people had died obeying them.

Arlan looked from the brazier to the shutters shaking under the autumn wind. Fire in FireStorm meant kiln, forge, burned field, and the discipline that separated one from another. Thunder belonged to the country around them and carried farther than the spark that began it.

”Fire and Thunder,” Arlan said. Nobody answered immediately.

Cade was the first to grin. ”That I can shout.”

Brienne repeated it more quietly. ”Fire and Thunder.”

Morton looked back at the old genealogy. ”We Hold the Pass was about endurance. These are about what comes after surviving.”

”Then keep both where they belong,” Arlan said. ”Write the old words beside the old line. Record the new ones from this grant onward. We are not pretending the house began with me.”

Rodrick dipped his quill. Beneath the corrected arms he wrote the new motto in a clean hand:

FIRE AND THUNDER

The words needed no explanation beneath them.

Rodrick entered the change formally rather than erasing the past. The genealogy would show We Hold the Pass as the historical Ashenblade motto and record Fire and Thunder from Renly’s elevation onward, with a note identifying Arlan as the lord who adopted it. Morton insisted on that wording so no future descendant could claim the old motto had never existed.

For the next two days, cloth workers copied the fixed device onto storm-grey banners. Smiths prepared new shield badges for the household guard, and the seal-cutter altered the larger ceremonial stamp so the silver sword, flames, and red sun matched the version entered into the records.

Arlan rejected any attempt to replace usable equipment merely for appearance. Old shields received paint or small plates; sound cloaks remained in service. Formal recognition was already expensive enough without setting coin on fire to make every soldier look newly purchased.

The revised heraldry was copied onto more than banners. The castle’s wax seals, the household’s formal correspondence, and the marks used on high-value trade crates would all follow the same drawing from then on, while ordinary commercial bottles could retain the simpler red-sun mark customers already recognized. House and product no longer needed to be visually identical to remain related.

Wayne tested the new banner from the western ridge. At the gate its details were clear; beyond the lower field, the sword vanished into silver and the red sun carried the recognition. The painter thickened the blade and removed one fine line no soldier could see at distance. Heraldry had to survive rain, smoke, and a frightened sentry, not merely please the eye across a council table.

Old seals were gathered rather than destroyed at once. Morton listed which leases and store orders still bore them, then locked the worn stamps beside the transition roll. For thirty days, a document needed either the new impression or a countersign from a named officer. After that, the old mark would prove age, not authority.

Rodrick also prepared copies of the lineage, grant, arms, and motto for Storm’s End. One would remain in FireStorm’s records, one would travel with Ser Alistair’s return papers, and another would be sealed against fire and damp in the castle archive.

On the evening before the ceremony, Morton brought the final parchment to Arlan’s study. The page showed the old line of Ashenblade landed knights above, Renly’s new grant beneath, and the revised arms occupying the margin beside the two blunt words.

”Your father would recognize the sword,” Morton said.

Arlan traced the edge of the painted silver blade without touching the ink. ”Good.”

He did not need his ancestors to recognize every choice. He needed the house they had kept alive to remain recognizably theirs even while it became something they had never possessed the resources to build.

Outside, new banners snapped in the night wind above FireStorm’s gate; the old house had not changed its past. It had finally decided what it wanted its future to be called, and the choice would be witnessed publicly rather than whispered into a family book behind closed doors.
