ASOIAF: The Rise of House Ashenblade.

The first consequence of Blackstone Canyon appeared in a merchant’s account. Lord Symon’s factor removed the armed-escort surcharge from two FireStorm wagons and offered thirty days of credit on salt and sailcloth. A week earlier, the same man had demanded coin before opening his warehouse.

Lord Waywood moved a patrol away from the road shared with Nightsong and sent a carefully worded offer of mutual non-aggression. He did not apologize for helping Elton’s blockade. He offered to testify that pressure had been applied and asked that old disputes be considered closed.

Symon came in person. His gifts were modest; his shipping contacts were not. He offered routes toward Narrow Sea merchants and the Free Cities, where Nightsong could not frighten every buyer by closing one market gate. Morton accepted no volume until the kiln and distillery books showed it could be supplied.

The negotiation lasted through dinner because Symon’s first proposal required FireStorm to deliver every cask to Rainwood at its own risk. Morton set the cost of carts, guards, broken axles, and lost work beside the offered price. Symon raised his rate and agreed to take possession at the eastern bridge, where his seal would replace Arlan’s on the cargo. Rodrick added that any toll seizure after that point belonged to Symon’s quarrel. The merchant accepted only when he saw FireStorm would walk away from a generous number that concealed the dangerous miles.

Salt arrived before the first glass left. The factor measured it in the yard while two clerks used different scales. Their totals disagreed by half a sack. Rather than choose the lower figure, Morton emptied the disputed measure, found damp clinging to the bottom boards, and recorded dry weight for payment. Symon’s man complained and then copied the method. Trade had become safer, not effortless.

”He has not changed loyalties,” Rodrick said after the visit. ”He has changed his estimate of risk.”

Arlan looked at the credit entry. ”Then make honest trade less risky than betrayal.”

Other houses waited. Tauha’s steward wrote to Storm’s End before naming an heir or regent, unwilling to look like a beneficiary of Lyman’s death. Two lords asked whether the labor prisoners would be ransomed. One quietly returned the copy of Elton’s old call for a coalition and claimed to have kept it by accident.

Arlan answered Tauha before the others. Lyman’s body would return under white cloth with the names of every dead man FireStorm had identified. The spring remained under the old shared use until Storm’s End ruled, and no Ashenblade patrol would enter Tauha villages to collect weapons or coin. The surviving steward received no threat to accept those terms. A house deciding succession under fear could turn the next heir into Elton’s next weapon.

Families of prisoners began arriving at the western marker. They brought bread, blankets, and questions about release. Cade admitted them in groups beneath the eyes of both guards and captives. No family could remove a prisoner, but each could see he lived and leave goods under his name. The visits consumed a full watch and made escape easier to plan; they also carried the truth of the white lane into Tauha more reliably than any Ashenblade proclamation.

At the Drunken Stag, men argued less about the battle than about what came after it. Some called Lyman an invader; others called Arlan a minor lord who had presumed to hang one of his peers. Mercenaries wanted to know why so many men chose the white lane instead of fighting to the last. Merchants wanted to know whether the road would remain open while Renly decided.

The south had not united behind FireStorm. It had begun making different choices, which was more dangerous to Elton than a single declaration of friendship.

In Nightsong, his steward laid those choices across a desk: Waywood’s patrol withdrawn, Symon’s ships offered, toll income delayed, three minor houses refusing fresh men until Storm’s End ruled. Elton broke no cup. He read every page twice.

He ordered the southern toll books closed to everyone except two old retainers and sent riders to learn which merchants had spoken with FireStorm. Then he canceled the riders before they reached the gate. Open pressure had just cost him men, money, and Renly’s attention. The same questions would travel through debt collectors, marriage kin, and innkeepers who could claim ordinary business. Elton had learned enough to change the hand without changing the purpose.

Lyman had failed because he allowed one grievance, one chain of supplies, and one body of men to remain visible together. FireStorm had answered with witnesses before soldiers. The next proxy could not be armed through a route Rodrick already watched or sent across a boundary marked before neutral eyes.

”Prepare horses,” Elton said. ”I go to Storm’s End myself.”

His lawful defense lay ready. The sealed letter to Lyman promised mediation, not war. Tauha’s spring grievance predated both men. Elton could deny every spoken promise and call the weapons a private loan. The facts would still hurt him, but they would require Renly to choose what their convergence meant.

Elton prepared a second pressure for a different audience. His note toward Ser Jaime Lannister accused no one of treason. It asked whether the crown knew of House Ashenblade’s inquiries into old Targaryen blood and dragon eggs and offered to provide whatever rumors reached Nightsong. The question could be repeated near Robert without anyone first defending it as proof.

”Do we possess more than rumor?” the steward asked.

”The King possesses hatred. I need only give it a direction.”

At FireStorm, a long horn sounded while Arlan reviewed supports for the iron working. Twenty white-cloaked riders approached under the crowned stag. Ser Alistair Florent rode at their head with Renly’s authority to investigate the Tauha conflict.

The name mattered because Alistair had read evidence before and had shown little appetite for convenient conclusions. He was not coming to admire a victory. He would decide which parts of it Storm’s End could defend and which costs Arlan would bear.

”Brienne, Cade, Rodrick,” Arlan said. ”With me.”

Villagers gathered near the gate. Arlan ordered the road cleared and the prison rolls brought into the hall. Beyond the wall, Alistair dismounted before anyone could turn his arrival into either rescue or threat.

Morton had prepared rooms for a visiting knight. Alistair chose a pallet beside the evidence store and placed his own seal across the door. His guards took meals from FireStorm’s kitchen but paid the household rate into a separate purse. By nightfall, even hospitality had become part of the record. Arlan understood the warning: the inquiry would inspect not only what happened at Blackstone Canyon, but how House Ashenblade behaved once no enemy remained to force its hand.

The white cloaks also replaced the guards at Lyman’s body until Tauha named men to receive it. No one in FireStorm objected aloud.

The change entered Morton’s watch book.

Symon’s factor delayed his first outbound wagon until he learned whether Alistair meant to close the road. Alistair sent no assurance; he inspected the load and let it pass under the existing toll. The simple departure told merchants more than a proclamation would have.

By dusk, two more carts had followed it through the gate.
