ASOIAF: The Rise of House Ashenblade.

Fifteen hundred men looked like a war from FireStorm’s highest tower. Through the spyglass they looked like six camps forced to share a horizon. Their banners stood apart, their wagons had been drawn behind separate lines, and no ram or ladder had moved toward the walls. Eighty knights had ridden with Elton, but their squires watered horses under six different sets of orders.

Wayne saw men who might attack by dusk. Morton saw fifteen hundred mouths eating grain someone would have to replace. Rodrick saw the distance between tents.

”Three explanations,” he said over the hall table. He placed a charcoal mark beside Elton’s nightingales. ”He means to frighten you into surrender before Robert arrives. He means to provoke you into striking first. Or one of those is cover while the written accusation reaches Storm’s End ahead of you.”

”Which?” Brienne asked.

”All are possible. I would wager on the third, but I have been employed too recently to gamble with other men’s blood.”

Outside, buckets moved inside the wall, spare arrows went to the towers, and the infirmary received clean linen. Arlan ordered the mine passage checked but kept closed and made the kitchens maintain their ordinary meal bells. The banners beyond the fields had already summoned memories of burned roofs and murdered sentries. He would not let Elton turn those memories into an ally.

The fear reached the gate before the first written answer did. A cooper tried to send his wife and two daughters toward Rainwood with a handcart; a widow from the western farms demanded a spear because she had no horse on which to flee. Brienne met both beneath the raised portcullis. She showed the cooper the open southern road and gave him a clay token that would preserve his place if he returned. She sent the widow to carry linen at the infirmary rather than pretending one afternoon with a spear made her a guard.

Three families left. Two came back before noon after finding Caron riders questioning travelers beyond the lower bridge. Their return produced more alarm than departure had, because everyone at the gate heard that Elton’s men wanted names, cargo, and kin in FireStorm. Arlan ordered the account written publicly on a board with the riders’ questions and the place they had asked them. He added no claim that the men intended arrests. People could judge the conduct without being told which fear to choose.

The meal bell rang at its usual hour. Smoke rose from the kitchens, children carried bowls, and the wall watches changed on time. None of it made fifteen hundred men disappear. It gave the holding a rhythm other than waiting for Elton to decide whether the day became a siege.

By afternoon, fear reached the market in the price of salt. Two traders closed their carts and one demanded three times the morning rate, claiming every road would be shut by night. Morton opened a measured portion of the household store at the previous week’s price and wrote each buyer’s name beside the weight. He did not give the salt away; that would empty the chest before a real blockade began. The line shortened once people saw the same scoop fill every sack, and the trader who had raised his price reopened at twice the old rate rather than take his goods back through Elton’s camps.

Rodrick spread Wayne’s six sheets in a row. They did not repeat one accusation. To marcher knights, Arlan had raised a private army and refused lawful feudal dues. In Rainwood, he dealt in stolen liquor and glass. Villages north of the road heard that FireStorm had murdered carters. A copy meant for Storm’s End described disloyal levies timed to the King’s visit. One version hinted at Dornish gold, another at mountain clans.

The true details troubled Arlan more than the lies. One sheet named the week in which three new spear racks had been installed. Another knew which kiln shed stored finished glass. Someone had observed FireStorm closely or received word from someone who had.

”Answer them before they spread,” Brienne said. Her bandage pulled beneath her sleeve when she planted both palms on the table, but she ignored it. ”A lie left alone becomes what frightened people remember.”

Wayne shook his head. ”Find the riders. Break the road between their camp and Storm’s End.”

”And give Elton missing messengers to display before the King,” Morton said. ”We have trade enough at risk without hanging royal-road couriers.”

Rodrick listened, then offered his own cost. ”Let one version continue. If we correct every falsehood at once, the men behind it learn which details exposed them. If we feed each channel a different harmless fact, the first fact that returns will tell us which path Elton trusts.”

Brienne’s jaw set. ”While people call Arlan a traitor.”

”For a day, perhaps two.”

”A day is long enough for a frightened man to close a gate.”

Arlan looked from the distant camps to the papers. None of the choices protected everything. Seizing roads risked Renly’s peace; a broad denial taught the forgers; silence cost reputation and perhaps trade. ”We answer what can be checked in public,” he said. ”The road stays open. No courier is touched by a man wearing my colors. The six lords receive separate letters, and each letter carries one detail no other letter contains.”

Wayne accepted the order without liking it. Brienne did not. ”What do I tell the people at the gate?”

”The truth they can see. Elton is camped beyond our boundary. He has not entered. The well is full, the stores are counted, and the meal bell will ring. Anyone who wants to leave may do so; no family loses its place for being afraid.”

That last promise carried more risk than locking the gate. It also denied Elton a village held by force. Brienne nodded once and went to the yard.

Rodrick watched her leave. ”She would have made an excellent maester if the Citadel permitted honesty in armor.”

”She would have thrown an archmaester down a stair within a week.”

”That may be what excellence requires.”

They spent the afternoon testing the six stories against the holding itself. Morton brought store tallies, Wayne produced patrol rolls, and villagers who had seen unfamiliar riders gave their accounts separately. The supposed grain deliveries failed against the ford keeper’s marks. A murdered carter appeared alive and indignant at the gate. The hidden spear racks existed, which meant that accusation could not be dismissed as invention; someone had watched the armory yard from the western rise.

Rodrick climbed there with Wayne before dusk. They found crushed fern, two cold fire pits, and a strip of blue wool caught on thorn. Nothing named a house. Nothing proved when the watchers had been there. The signs were consistent with watchers on the rise, where they would have had a clear view of the spear racks.

When they returned, one of the six camps had shifted its horse lines west. Another had sent wagons toward the road without striking its tents. The coalition had not broken, but neither had it become an army.

Arlan marked the boundary beyond bowshot and ordered no shaft loosed unless armed men crossed it. Then he sat with Rodrick and Morton before six clean sheets of parchment.

”The same truth in each,” he said. ”Different bait.”

Rodrick dipped his quill. ”Now we discover which lord brought his own purpose and which merely brought Elton’s fear.”
