ASOIAF: The Rise of House Ashenblade.

The withdrawal was real. Cade’s forward file yielded the bend one measured pace at a time, carrying a man whose hip had struck a stone when the shields closed. Lyman’s scouts had found no hidden stakes, and the black shields moving away confirmed the conclusion he wanted: FireStorm had abandoned its first plan when Tauha refused to enter blindly.

”Press them,” Lyman ordered. ”Do not let them settle at the quarry.”

His foot advanced cautiously at first. When no rock fell and no ground opened, caution became speed. The front ranks pushed after Cade while their officers shouted for the mounted men to take the western lane and come behind him.

Wayne’s first arrows struck no mass of soldiers. One cut the thong beneath a Tauha horn. Another killed the horse carrying Lyman’s second banner. A third drove through the shoulder of the man raising a signal flag. Commands still traveled, but more slowly and in different words by the time they reached the rear.

At the quarry mouth, Cade showed the square panel for his second file. The fresh ten passed through the withdrawing men and took the front without opening the line. Tauha’s first rush met shields whose arms were not yet tired. Spears struck, withdrew, and changed hands when a shaft lodged.

The injured hip slowed the exchange. Two soldiers tried to carry their comrade through the rotating file and caught his boot beneath a shield. Cade ordered the rear man to cut the lace, leaving the boot in the mud and the soldier able to crawl. The delay opened half a body of space; a Tauha spear entered and glanced from black leather before the new front closed. The spear failed to pierce the leather, but the line had learned how little room separated a glancing blow from a death.

On the western lane, Bor’s weakness became real. The lead wheel of his first barricade sank to the hub in rain-softened earth. Five men heaved; the axle groaned and split beside the pin. The lane remained open while twelve Tauha horsemen came through at a trot.

Bor could not close the road. He changed its purpose.

”Leave the axle. Turn the second wagon across the stones,” he ordered. Four men dragged the rear barricade short of its mark while the others looped ropes around the broken frame. Instead of sealing the lane, they narrowed it into a hook. The first horses passed. The next six found timber across their turn and crowded into those ahead.

Bor hauled the broken frame behind them with both hands. The closure came late, trapping officers on the quarry side while much of their mounted support remained outside. It also left Bor’s ten separated from Cade by a dozen armed horsemen.

One horseman charged the rope team before the frame settled. Bor caught the bridle instead of the rider, dragged the animal’s head toward the timber, and used its panic to block the two behind it. A spear scraped along his shoulder plate. His men could not exploit the stumble without leaving the rope, so they held position while mounted retainers recovered. The road remained contested rather than won.

Arlan raised the long surrender strip. The remaining cord tore loose in the wind. From the foot ranks, the hanging cloth looked like no signal at all.

Brienne did not wait for a perfect sign. She rode into view beside the marked lane, lifted a white shield cover above her head, and shouted the terms herself. ”Weapons down. Walk to the cloth. You receive quarter.”

The first Tauha soldier who moved toward her took a spear haft across the face from one of Lyman’s retainers. ”Hold the line!” the man shouted. ”Lord Tauha pays a dragon to anyone who breaks Ashenblade!”

That blow divided the battle more sharply than the canyon. Villagers in borrowed steel saw Lyman’s household men between them and the only visible road out. Some kept fighting. Others struck the spear aside and began backing toward Brienne.

Cade could no longer see Bor. The echo swallowed the second horn, and an arrow had torn Wayne’s signal flag from its staff. The plan’s signals were breaking in the same order as Tauha’s. Cade used the mission instead of waiting for Arlan. He ordered his reserve file toward the western stones, not to defeat the horsemen but to open a path to Bor’s isolated ten.

Lyman saw the movement and mistook it for weakness. He gathered his best retainers and drove at the seam between Cade’s rotating files. The first impact forced three black shields backward. One man fell beneath a boot and vanished from Arlan’s sight.

Cade did not fill the gap by throwing more bodies into it. He yielded another six paces, drawing Lyman’s household men beyond the foot soldiers who were still receiving his orders. Then the rested file turned inward on both sides. Wayne’s remaining archers cut the last horn and shot two officers from their saddles.

The attack had outrun its command. Men at the rear heard an advance after the front had begun withdrawing. Horsemen outside Bor’s barricade received no order at all. Those trapped inside found Black Armor shields facing them and a white lane opening behind.

Dust and quarry echoes made the confusion visible before it became complete. A Tauha serjeant repeated Lyman’s order to press, then saw the household banner moving backward and changed the words to hold. His front rank heard the first command; the second reached the men behind. They collided shoulder to shoulder while Cade’s files continued the same measured retreat. The difference was not courage. One force still knew which voice and panel overruled the rest.

Bor overturned the broken wagon bed as cover and pulled one of his wounded men behind it. His ten did not charge the horses. They used spears to deny the narrow turn until Cade’s reserve reached them. When the two groups joined, they recovered the fallen shield man alive and closed around the mounted officers.

Lyman shouted new promises of gold. Few men heard him, and fewer still believed a lord who could no longer make one end of his force obey the other. The first weapons fell near Brienne’s lane. She sent each surrendering man behind her shields instead of using him as cover for an advance.

The lane filled. Cade halted his pressure long enough for it to remain reachable.

Lyman ordered the retainers beside him to close it by force. Two obeyed. Three looked at the villagers already passing beneath Brienne’s white cover and lowered their blades.

The cage around Lyman was no wall of stone. It was the shrinking number of men who still accepted his command.

Arlan stayed behind Cade’s reserve instead of riding toward the visible break. From there he could see Bor’s timber, Brienne’s cloth, and the rear banners. Joining one fight would strengthen ten swords and blind him to the moment the surrender lane closed or Tauha’s untouched horsemen found another road. He kept his sword sheathed and sent the next panel.

A breathless runner reached him with no message, only a broken flagstaff. Arlan sent water and a replacement panel forward. The information he lacked mattered more than any order he might invent to fill it.
