ASOIAF: The Rise of House Ashenblade.

Arlan entered the secret chamber the next morning before the remains of the celebration had been cleared from the square. He set the new House Ashenblade seal on the stone table, closed the door, and opened the Myriad Realms Forging Group.

The response was immediate.

[Formal hereditary lordship recognized.]

[Authority tier: Lordship.]

[Territorial authority expanded. Social status threshold met. Group Level upgraded to Lv. 2]

[New Permission Unlocked: Stable Low-Magic Plane Channel]

[Deep cross-plane trading enabled: custom forging, technology transfer, artisan employment]

[New Group Member Unlocked: Gloin Ironfoot — Dwarf Rune Master]

[Origin: Middle-Magic Plane / Lord of the Rings World]

[Specialty: rune forging and magic armament production]

Renly’s decree had made Arlan the hereditary lord of FireStorm directly sworn to Storm’s End. The Forging Group recognized the scope of that authority for its own permissions without granting a separate Westerosi title.

Arlan accepted the distinction. The interface cared about rank as a key; the men outside cared about whose seal controlled the mine and whose summons they owed. Whatever word the interface used, his authority still rested on Renly’s grant and the obligations it imposed.

Larry’s familiar shop remained pinned at the top of the group. Below it, Balin Anvil’s icon flashed repeatedly, and opening the conversation released a stack of messages sent as soon as the new channel became available.

[Balin Anvil: Congratulations, Lord! The stable channel is open at last. The Ironpeak Mountains can trade with you properly now instead of treating every order like a parcel pushed through a crack.]

[Balin Anvil: Custom armaments, complete smelting methods, production tools, and artisan contracts are available under your new permissions. We can send craftsmen as well as finished goods.]

[Balin Anvil: Black Iron Ore, Meteoric Iron, and adamantine can now be supplied through the channel in stable quantities. Price depends on grade and volume.]

[Balin Anvil: Finished plate and weapons are still available, but the real advantage is that you can now build. A proper furnace and trained hands will save you more coin than ordering every spear from me forever.]

The change was larger than access to better swords. Until now, FireStorm’s military improvement depended heavily on buying finished items through the group, which made every expansion a question of coin and secrecy. Technology transfer and artisan employment offered a path toward local production.

Arlan opened Balin’s catalogue and ordered the complete package for iron smelting and steel forging: furnace plans, ore-preparation methods, quenching and tempering procedures, plate-forming techniques, and the tools required to teach the process rather than merely demonstrate it once.

He added contracts for ten experienced dwarf artisans and five hundred tons of Black Iron Ore from the Ironpeak Mountains. The amount dwarfed anything FireStorm could move casually through its gate, but the stable channel was precisely what made bulk delivery possible.

Arlan paid the full price in gold rather than taking credit. The expense was considerable, but FireStorm’s recent trade and captured reserves made the order possible without emptying every chest. Finished steel armed one man; furnaces and craftsmen could keep turning later ore into tools and weapons. The reply arrived seconds later.

[Balin Anvil: Technical package delivered. Artisan contracts confirmed. Ten craftsmen and five hundred tons of Black Iron Ore scheduled through the stable channel within three days.]

A muted golden light formed over the table. Bound hides, rolled plans, and a wooden case appeared where there had been empty stone a moment earlier. Arlan opened the first bundle and found furnace sections drawn from several angles, with measurements and notes rendered into Common Tongue by the system.

The instructions covered ore selection and roasting before moving through furnace construction, fuel use, smelting, carbon control, quenching, tempering, and cold working. Separate diagrams showed air flow, bellows arrangements, refractory linings, and the sequence by which raw bloom or pig iron could be refined into useful steel. The value was not that every technique was magical. Most were understandable processes carried out with better control, better equipment, and accumulated experience FireStorm did not possess.

That made them more useful.

A sword only armed one man. A furnace design that local smiths could reproduce changed every sword made after it. The same applied to the ten artisans: their greatest value would be the knowledge they left in human hands after the first workshop was running.

The newly unlocked member waited below Balin, his icon now fully visible rather than greyed out. Arlan opened Gloin Ironfoot’s profile without placing an order.

Gloin’s catalogue centered on rune work: enchantments intended to improve edge retention, defense, resistance to heat or cold, and other properties unavailable to ordinary smithing. More elaborate entries described magical armaments that would be impossible to explain away if displayed openly in Westeros. He listed rune-cut armor, enchanted blades, and mechanisms whose names alone made Arlan close several entries until he had a better reason to expose them.

Arlan sent a greeting and asked for the basic limitations of rune forging rather than purchasing anything. FireStorm had only just become visible enough for Elton to invent Targaryen stories around it. Filling the yard with obviously enchanted weapons would be an efficient method of giving those stories better material.

Core retainers and carefully controlled equipment were another matter, but that decision could wait until he understood costs, reliability, and what low-magic conditions did to the runes.

The level-two interface contained one final practical addition: Group Warehouse access. Purchased materials could now remain in system storage until Arlan chose to receive them, removing the need to make every delivery appear inside the same small secret chamber. The change mattered immediately because five hundred tons of ore could not plausibly be stacked behind a locked stone door, and ten dwarf artisans would require an arrival point far from curious servants.

He tested the function with one bundle of ordinary forge supplies, storing it and withdrawing it again. The interface accepted the action without comment, confirming a storage function rather than an infinite personal inventory; goods still had to be purchased, received through the group, and deliberately moved out.

He left the bundle stored through one meal and recovered it unchanged, then tried to withdraw it beyond the locked room. The interface refused until he designated a receiving space he controlled. Distance had become more flexible; ownership and deliberate delivery had not vanished. Arlan recorded the limit before a hurried future order turned a useful warehouse into an assumption.

Arlan closed the warehouse window and returned to the furnace plans. He marked which diagrams could be shown openly to local smiths and which deliveries required a cover story before the dwarves arrived. The system solved transport; it did not solve the social problem of ten unfamiliar craftsmen appearing beside a marcher village.

Outside the room, FireStorm had an iron deposit, local smiths, growing manpower, and a legal grant protecting its right to operate workshops. Inside, he now had methods and specialists capable of turning those resources into an industry.

Renly’s decree had changed who could tell House Ashenblade no; the system’s new tier changed what Arlan could build after hearing yes.

He rolled the furnace plans back into their case and left the seal beside them. One represented authority recognized by men; the other represented access recognized by a machine. FireStorm would need both, but neither mattered unless the people outside could turn paper, ore, and permission into something that survived the next winter and the next war.
