ASOIAF: The Rise of House Ashenblade.

Storm’s End was preparing for a king when Ser Alistair returned. Servants crossed the galleries with bolts of cloth and baskets of plate, squires argued over stable space, and Renly Baratheon had spent the morning hearing reports about provisions, guest chambers, and ceremonial arrangements for Robert’s arrival.

He received Alistair in a smaller gallery overlooking the sea rather than the great hall. Once the attendants withdrew, Renly gestured toward a chair and abandoned the pleasantries.

”Tell me what you found. Is Ashenblade the rebel Elton keeps describing, or did Elton manufacture another enemy for himself?”

Alistair disposed of the uncontested facts first: Lyman’s ultimatum, the old boundary, the armed crossing, and the final count had survived inspection. Then he separated findings from inference. Men and supplies tied to Nightsong had sustained the march; payments, stable entries, weapon marks, and independent testimony converged on Elton’s intermediary. Elton’s own sealed letter promised only mediation and a loan.

Renly’s easy expression thinned. ”So he kept the dangerous bargain out of his own hand.”

”That is my conclusion,” Alistair said. ”It does not name Elton’s hand.”

”Lyman crossed first?”

”Yes, my lord. That point is supported by the letter, the boundary witnesses, and the prisoners.”

”And Ashenblade executed him after surrender.”

”He did. I told Arlan that decision would be judged separately. He did not hide it.”

Renly drummed two fingers on the arm of his chair. ”That part I dislike. Continue.”

Alistair next described the costs he had imposed: shared access to the spring pending survey, Storm’s End inspection of the labor prisoners, captured goods held until damages were assessed, and a three-day reporting duty for future noble captives. FireStorm had accepted each restriction. Brienne’s status as sworn sword, Cade’s promise to attend a fresh hearing, and the holding’s growing military strength followed in three short notes rather than becoming another trial.

”The Black Armor men are well equipped and unusually disciplined,” Alistair said. ”I saw no cross-border raiding. I also saw a force growing faster than its neighbors will find comfortable.”

”How good are they?”

Alistair considered the question. ”Better than Elton would prefer. Not numerous enough to threaten Storm’s End.”

”And the cost of keeping them?”

”Enough that they cannot remain under arms without the workshops, harvest, and roads. Their strength is attached to a functioning holding, not hidden coin. Close those roads and Arlan must either shrink the force or take what he needs. Keep the roads lawful and he has more to lose by rebellion than by service.”

Renly turned the answer over. Dependence could restrain more reliably than affection, provided Storm’s End did not mistake strangling a useful vassal for governing him.

Renly laughed once. ”That may be the most useful measurement you have given me.”

Unauthorized tale usage: if you spot this story on Amazon, report the violation.

He asked about discipline next. Alistair described men drilling under Cade without breaking formation for visitors, prisoners kept alive for questioning, and the absence of any evidence that FireStorm soldiers had crossed into neighboring lands to collect revenge.

Alistair also described the holding itself: repaired walls, functioning workshops, fields under cultivation, refugees being settled, and accounts kept with an attention uncommon among small marcher houses. He did not call FireStorm rich, because it was not; he called it organized, which interested Renly more. The holding’s growth was visible in new roofs and new drills, but so were the scars of burned grain stores and recent fighting.

For years, Elton Caron had treated the southern marches as though every road eventually belonged to Nightsong. Renly could rebuke him, but direct pressure risked turning lesser houses into a defensive bloc around an old and established power. A capable Ashenblade offered a different answer. FireStorm did not need to defeat Nightsong; it only needed to make smaller houses believe that obedience to Elton was no longer the sole safe choice.

FireStorm had reasons of its own to resist Elton; that made Arlan useful without requiring Renly to manufacture a rivalry from nothing.

”So the boy governs, fights, keeps accounts, and has enough sense to let you inspect the evidence,” Renly said. ”Either he is unusually capable or you have been seduced by his bread.”

”The bread was ordinary, my lord.”

”Tragic.”

Only after the report and temporary orders had been entered did Alistair have the gifts brought in. Renly drew the short sword, tested its balance, and set it across the arms of his chair.

”Made for me?”

”Arlan said it was fitted for your hand.”

He admired the clear goblet, but the relief-map held him longer. His thumb rested over the small mark south of Storm’s End.

”He could have made FireStorm larger,” Renly said.

”He ordered the scale checked twice.”

Renly looked from the little dark point to the fitted sword. The offering did not ask him to believe FireStorm equal to an ancient house. It asked him to decide where a capable new one belonged and accept responsibility for the strength he encouraged.

The humor faded when Alistair delivered Arlan’s message. He repeated the substance without ornament: FireStorm stood on the southern marches; House Ashenblade would hold its roads and passes against raiders, Ironborn, or any other enemy that threatened the Stormlands; its loyalty ran to Storm’s End, not Nightsong.

That was the sentence Renly had been waiting to hear.

A useful vassal understood where his obligations ran and could keep a road without calling for Baratheon men every season. A dangerous one might eventually decide that success excused obedience. Making FireStorm a counterweight would require direct fealty, defined borders, inspection, and consequences for private war—not gratitude alone.

Renly rose and walked to the narrow window facing south. Far beyond the sea mist and stone, Elton was already trying to persuade half the Stormlands that FireStorm represented a dangerous new power. That argument contained its own problem: every time Elton described Arlan as formidable, he also advertised exactly why Storm’s End might prefer the younger house alive.

The irony pleased him. Elton had spent months creating exactly the sort of rival he now feared. A poor Ashenblade could be ignored, threatened, or absorbed; an Ashenblade with documented grievances, functioning workshops, disciplined men, and direct gratitude toward Storm’s End could become a counterweight without Renly spending a single Baratheon life to build it.

”Have the evidence copied for the council,” Renly said. ”And send word that Elton is to remain at Storm’s End until I hear the matter.”

Alistair stood. ”And Arlan?”

Renly did not answer immediately. Robert’s approaching visit limited how violently he wanted to rearrange the south, but it also made another round of private feuding intolerable. Whatever reward he chose had to strengthen Storm’s End’s authority while making Elton understand that sponsored invasions would not restore his old freedom of action.

Renly glanced back at FireStorm’s mark on the glass map. ”Summon him when the council sits. If I lift House Ashenblade out of Elton’s reach, I mean to put it within mine.”

He ordered the map displayed in the council chamber only after the evidence was heard. Admiration before judgment would look purchased; judgment followed by acknowledgment would remain his act. Alistair bowed, recognizing the distinction, and left the sword locked in Renly’s private cabinet.
