ASOIAF: The Rise of House Ashenblade.

Cade called the final standard One Against Five, though no candidate entered a ring alone. Each man took command of a five-person file and faced five pressures before reaching the far gate: a wounded comrade, a flank alarm, a lost shield, an order given in the wrong form, and a retreat that looked like cowardice.

”A strong man can survive a bad choice for several breaths,” Cade told them. ”The men beside him may not. We are measuring the choice.”

Cole went first. He was neither the strongest nor the fastest among the fifty, which made him useful as an example. His file crossed the yard beneath padded shafts, reached the first marker, and found a weighted casualty blocking the narrow path. Cole put two men on the litter, one shield above them, and kept one free to watch the rear.

At the second marker, a veteran shouted that attackers had reached the left wall. The correct horn sounded from the right. Cole looked toward the voice, lost two breaths, and followed the horn.

The third pressure came when a shield strap broke. He did not stop the file while its owner fought the buckle. He moved the man behind the litter, shifted the rear guard forward, and ordered the damaged shield carried because abandonment would leave no replacement later.

Near the gate, Wayne rode across the route wearing a crowned-stag cloak and called for the file to pursue a fleeing enemy. He gave no countersign. Cole asked once, received none, and continued toward the assigned gate.

The final horn ordered retreat with the finish in sight. For a moment every face in the file turned toward Cole. He could have crossed and claimed success before obeying. Instead he reversed the order, brought the litter behind the shields, and returned to the last secure marker without running.

”Pass,” Cade said.

Other men failed in ways strength could not conceal. One abandoned the casualty to answer the flank alarm. Another recognized the false order and then pursued the false messenger, leaving his file without command. A third refused to retreat because three watching recruits had laughed; his five held the ground until padded arrows marked four of them dead.

The veterans changed the sequence for every file. Sometimes the wounded man could walk if asked. Sometimes the shortest road ended in a chained gate. One frightened civilian crossed the course and was mistaken for an attacker by a candidate too eager to prove vigilance. Brienne stopped the blow with her practice blade and struck his name from that station.

No one passed every decision cleanly. Cade cared whether a man corrected himself before pride made the mistake expensive. Wayne cared whether orders could be heard and repeated. Brienne watched how candidates treated people who could not improve their score. Rodrick recorded which failures repeated when noise, fatigue, or rank changed.

Bor stood beside the casualty marker and watched a candidate surrender his own shield to protect the litter. ”Cruel test,” he said.

”You wanted to fight with an arrow in your back,” Cade replied.

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

”That was different.”

”Naturally.”

By dusk, forty-two men had met the field standard. Eight remained provisional. One needed work on signals, two lost judgment when tired, three protected the task but failed to keep their files informed, and two obeyed correct orders so rigidly that they missed changed ground.

Cade made the provisional eight watch the next files from beside Rodrick’s table. They heard how a correct order became useless when the rear rank did not know it, and they watched a candidate obey the retreat horn into a lane Brienne had visibly closed. Observation did not erase failure. It gave each man a specific error to meet on the next course instead of a vague command to become better.

The men who passed were tested once more in roles they had not chosen. The strongest carried messages; the fastest took the litter; men comfortable in front received the rear file, where they had to trust someone else’s pace. Cole lost sight of his file while relaying an order and corrected by moving the messenger path inside the shield line. Cade kept the pass because Cole named the failure before an examiner did and changed the route without abandoning the task.

Arlan did not expel the provisional eight. ”They train with veterans and repeat the stations built around what failed. A weakness we can name is work, not a moral sentence.”

The forty-two received full issue: fitted black leather, sword, spear, and shield recorded beside each name. The other eight retained training equipment until they qualified. All fifty remained better trained than FireStorm’s ordinary watch; the distinction told Cade what responsibility each could carry now.

Morton called the soldiers forward one household at a time. A man with no kin named the widow who had sheltered him after Black Pine; another listed a sister in Rainwood whose address changed with every forced clearance. Rodrick required a witness for each dependent and a place where grain or coin could actually reach them. The promise of support became slower on the page and more likely to survive the first death.

Two recruits objected to the equipment remaining house property. Arlan let Cade answer. ”If your shield splits beside another man, FireStorm replaces it. If it belongs to your family, your widow owns a broken board and the next soldier buys his own. You are paid for service; the line is armed for the task.” Neither man looked pleased, but both signed the issue mark.

Pay increased for the active elite roster, and each household received service support under Morton’s records rather than hereditary land. If a soldier died in duty, his dependents did not lose food the next morning. If he deserted, his uniform did not become family property.

When the yard emptied, Brienne remained with her greatsword. ”The doorway lesson,” she said. ”Again.”

Arlan took a practice sword. They worked without an audience in the narrow lane between two wagons. Brienne shortened her grip when the boards stole her reach, used the crossguard to bind his blade, and abandoned one strong cut when it would have blocked the imagined casualty behind her. Arlan touched her wrist once; on the next pass she changed the recovery before he could reach it.

”Better,” he said.

”You remember the last one?”

”I was there.”

Her power remained an advantage; the exercise had taught her it was not an obligation. They stopped when failing light made the wagon edges uncertain, with neither of them needing a crowd to name a winner.

Nearby, the eight provisional soldiers repaired a litter and repeated their signals under Wayne’s eye. Forty-two shields rested in assigned racks. Fifty names remained on Cade’s roster, each attached to a task, a household, and a weakness someone now knew how to train.

Before breakfast the next day, one provisional file ran the chained-gate station again. The leader saw the changed route, repeated it to the rear, and withdrew without leaving the weighted casualty. Cade moved one name to the active list and one active soldier to treatment for a swollen knee. The number stayed fifty; the roster remained a judgment that could respond to fact.
