ASOIAF: The Rise of House Ashenblade.

Ser Alistair’s conclusions changed behavior before Renly announced a judgment. Merchants brought old toll receipts to Storm’s End. Two lesser lords asked whether private checkpoints could still seize goods under the name of inspection. House Tauha’s steward requested authority to govern until an heir was settled, careful not to address the question to Nightsong.

Elton heard the movement beneath the gossip. Men had not agreed that Arlan was innocent of every excess; several disliked Lyman’s execution. They had agreed that Nightsong no longer supplied the only version Storm’s End would hear.

His steward found him near the edge of a crowded hall, gripping a wine cup hard enough to whiten his fingers. ”My lord, Ser Alistair’s report is being repeated everywhere. If Renly begins looking into the earlier incidents as well—”

”He will not destroy House Caron over one marcher quarrel,” Elton said.

The confidence in his voice was better than the confidence in his face. Nightsong remained powerful, old, and entangled with half the southern marches through marriages, obligations, and trade. Renly could punish Elton, but tearing him out entirely would disturb much more than one feud.

That calculation was why Elton had prepared another route. ”The letter to Ser Jaime has gone?”

”Yes, my lord.”

”Then let the court hear what Renly prefers not to hear. Targaryen remnants. Dragon eggs. A young lord gathering soldiers and sending goods across the Narrow Sea.” Elton’s mouth twisted. ”Robert will care about those words even if Renly does not.”

The accusation remained rumor rather than evidence, and Elton knew it. He needed only one Lannister voice close to Robert to repeat it at the right table. A king’s suspicion could accomplish what another petition to Storm’s End had failed to do.

Elsewhere in the castle, Renly read Arlan’s answer to Alistair’s temporary orders with Loras Tyrell beside the desk. It accepted the shared survey, prisoner inspection, and restraint on captured goods without asking Renly to hang Elton in exchange. One line promised that House Ashenblade would hold the southern approaches and answer lawful summons from Storm’s End.

Loras set down the glass goblet he had been examining. ”He understands what you want from him.”

”More importantly, he understands what I do not want,” Renly said. ”He did not fill three pages asking me to hang Elton.”

”And his workshops will pay customs if they keep growing.”

Renly smiled. ”You wound me by making loyalty sound taxable.”

”Most useful things are.”

Three days later, the matter came before a formal council at Storm’s End. Southern lords lined the chamber while Elton stood near the front, composed enough that only the tension in his jaw betrayed him.

House Waywood placed its representative near the rear rather than beside Elton. Symon’s heir stood with the merchants admitted to verify toll claims. Tauha had sent no lord, only the steward carrying a succession petition and the names of its dead. Their positions in the room showed the coalition’s fracture before Alistair read a word.

A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

Renly did not have every statement read aloud. Ser Alistair gave the settled findings, named the sources on which they rested, and then marked the one inference the council had to decide. Lyman had invaded; Arlan had killed him after capture; men, money, weapons, and an intermediary tied to Nightsong had enabled the attack. Elton’s lawful letter alone proved no conspiracy, but it did not explain the converging support around it.

When the reading ended, Renly looked directly at Elton. ”You encouraged one sworn holding to attack another and kept the bargain far enough from your seal to deny it afterward.”

Elton bowed his head. ”I relied on Lyman’s reports and judged badly, my lord. I accept your correction.”

The words convinced no one, but the bowed head was submission, and Renly chose not to force a public struggle with Robert approaching Storm’s End.

The punishment was deliberately painful rather than ruinous. Elton was fined an amount equivalent to roughly six months of the revenues he normally drew from the disputed southern tolls, ordered to close the private checkpoints he had established on the routes between Nightsong and Tauha lands, and required to restore tolls improperly seized from FireStorm caravans. Several lesser lords relaxed visibly when the judgment stopped short of stripping lands, because none wanted Renly to establish that one sponsored quarrel could erase an ancient house. The same men nevertheless heard the order to reopen the roads and understood that Nightsong’s freedom to harass smaller neighbors had just narrowed in public.

”If I learn of another sponsored attack between my sworn houses,” Renly said, ”your years of service will not purchase the same patience twice.”

Elton bent the knee. ”Understood, my lord.”

Renly ordered the illegal toll posts dismantled under Storm’s End supervision rather than trusting Nightsong to announce that they had vanished. Merchants who could document confiscated FireStorm goods were to submit claims through Alistair’s office, and Elton would be responsible for restitution where the records supported them. The ruling was narrow enough to avoid dismantling Nightsong’s lawful dues while making the blockade itself costly.

Alistair received thirty days to hear claims. Each merchant needed a receipt, named witness, or matching entry in Nightsong’s own toll books; rumor of a missing cart would not become an enforceable claim. Elton had to surrender copies of those books within three days. His steward’s face changed at that clause. The fine hurt once, but open accounts could reveal which friends had enjoyed exemptions and which rivals had paid twice.

Elton bowed. He still held Nightsong, and Renly had left the earlier accusations unexamined. If he surrendered these tolls now, he could find other ways to collect coin later. Behind the noble ranks, his steward watched him yield.

Then Renly spoke again.

”Bring in Arlan Ashenblade of FireStorm.”

Arlan had waited outside until the judgment against Elton was complete, preventing either rival from turning the council into a private quarrel. When the doors opened, Loras watched Elton rather than the entrance. The older lord’s shoulders went rigid.

Arlan entered in black formal wool edged with dark red, the silver sword and burning red sun of House Ashenblade worked discreetly at his breast. He crossed the chamber without looking toward Elton, stopped before Renly, and bent the knee.

The punishment had been only the first half of Renly’s decision. Men along both walls straightened as Arlan entered, because a lord who summoned one rival immediately after disciplining another was usually about to alter more than a fine.

Elton kept his face still until Arlan passed. Then he saw Waywood’s representative step aside to clear the younger lord’s path and Symon’s heir bow the exact degree due a landed peer. Neither gesture declared alliance. Both showed that Nightsong no longer decided how every man in the room measured House Ashenblade.

His steward moved closer, expecting an order. Elton gave none while Renly still watched. Retaliation spoken in that chamber would turn a narrow judgment into evidence of the next one.

He waited and listened.

For once, the chamber offered him no frightened silence to command.
