ASOIAF: The Rise of House Ashenblade.

Ur spoke before noon, though he did not give Cade the clean answer a court would have preferred. He had received fifty gold dragons from a man he knew only by a dockside name. The instructions were verbal: burn the western settlement, spread panic, take what could be carried, and keep FireStorm answering fires instead of building strength.

His lieutenants were questioned apart. One remembered the payment being divided in Rainwood; another named the stable where fresh horses waited; a third recognized the same factor Rodrick’s network had seen moving Nightsong coin. Not one had watched Elton pay Ur. The uncommon mixture of coins, a feed tally, and three accounts converged upon the route his agents used.

Rodrick recorded what each man had personally admitted and left the patronage as a supported inference rather than adding a name to Ur’s mouth. The raid still mattered because it was organized violence, not chance: men had been paid to burn refugee houses without carrying a Caron banner.

Arlan gave judgment before the afternoon meal. Ur and the leaders directly responsible for murder and arson would hang publicly, while surviving accomplices who had followed them into the settlement received three years of hard labor rather than sharing the chiefs’ sentence.

”Keep the statements with the coin count and route tallies,” Arlan told Rodrick. ”Originals separate from copies.”

”Already done.”

Arlan glanced at him, and Rodrick adjusted his spectacles. ”You have become predictable in one useful respect.”

Three days later, the western settlement still smelled faintly of wet ash, but FireStorm’s central yard had been cleared. Brienne’s wounds were not healed; Rodrick allowed her outside only after she promised not to train, lift anything heavier than her greatsword, or prove those restrictions meaningless.

She entered the yard in cleaned but faded armor, with a bandage beneath the left shoulder making one side sit slightly higher. The Black Armor Army stood in two ordered ranks, while villagers filled the remaining space, including families whose roofs still carried fresh repairs from the attack.

No gallows stood in the yard that morning. Arlan had ordered a low wooden platform built for a different purpose, but not for a knighting, because he had no intention of pretending he possessed an authority that was not his.

He was the head of a landed-knight house and lawful holder of FireStorm, yet he was not himself a knight entitled to create another by touching steel to each shoulder. The distinction mattered because Brienne cared about the honor too deeply for him to counterfeit it as a kindness. When she stepped onto the platform, Arlan did not draw his sword.

”Brienne of Tarth,” he said, and the yard quieted. ”You came to FireStorm under no obligation to this house. Since then, you have fought for its people, stood beside its soldiers, and bled protecting those under my roof.”

Brienne watched him without blinking.

A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

”I will not cheapen what you seek by pretending I can grant what is not mine to grant. I cannot make you a knight. I can tell you what House Ashenblade recognizes, and I can accept the oath you choose to give.”

A murmur moved through the villagers before dying away.

”Your courage is proven,” Arlan continued. ”Your discipline is proven. If you still wish it, I will accept you publicly as my sworn sword and household champion, with the place and honor that service carries in FireStorm.”

For years Brienne had imagined the older ceremony: a sword touching each shoulder, a formal title before witnesses, and a place among men who had spent most of her life insisting that place could never be hers. What Arlan offered was smaller, but it was honest; she lowered herself to one knee by choice.

”I, Brienne of Tarth, swear my sword to House Ashenblade and to Arlan Ashenblade, so long as he keeps faith with the people under his protection. I will defend those placed in my charge, stand against cruelty where my duty allows, and keep the trust given to me.”

Her voice carried across the yard without trembling.

”House Ashenblade accepts your oath,” Arlan answered. ”You stand in this household by service, not indulgence. No man here will treat your sword as lesser because you are a woman, and no one will call you ’Ser’ merely to flatter you.”

Brienne looked up sharply, understood what he meant, and nodded. Arlan offered his hand rather than a blade, and she rose while the Black Armor soldiers struck their spear butts against the ground in a single, unified blow. The western settlers began cheering first. The rest of FireStorm joined them a heartbeat later, not shouting a borrowed title but simply her name until the yard echoed with it.

”Brienne!”

The celebration afterward remained modest because repairs still needed hands and wounded people still needed food. Ale appeared anyway, and Cade, Wayne, and Bor shared a table with Brienne in the barracks while Rodrick stayed near enough to object if she used the injured arm too freely.

Cade raised his cup. ”I have served beside men with spurs who would have run from half of what you stood through in that settlement. Whatever singers decide to call you, I know whether I want you on my side of a shield wall.” Wayne drank to that without adding anything;

Bor lifted a cup that looked undersized in his hand. ”You hit harder than most knights.”

”That is not the definition,” Brienne said.

”Still useful.”

She laughed before she could stop herself. Around them, soldiers who had once watched her with wary curiosity now spoke about what they had actually seen: a lane held against a dozen men, wounds taken without breaking position, and a sworn sword who refused to leave civilians exposed.

Brienne listened with visible discomfort because praise had so often been bait in her life. Honest admiration required almost as much adjustment as hostility, especially when it came from men who were discussing her as a comrade rather than an oddity.

Later, Arlan stood above the yard with Rodrick while the last tables were cleared. Below them, Brienne helped one of the western children repair a leather sword belt, while Bor demonstrated something with his hands that appeared to involve breaking a man’s ribs.

”Elton will use this,” Rodrick said. ”Not the title, because you wisely did not create one. He will use the symbolism and tell every conservative fool from here to Storm’s End that FireStorm is overturning ancient custom.”

”I accepted a sworn sword. Lords have done that for thousands of years.”

”Facts have never prevented useful outrage.”

Arlan watched the yard for a moment. Soldiers who had once stared at Brienne as something strange now measured her by the standards they used for Cade or Bor: whether she held formation, kept faith, and could be trusted when steel came out.

”Then Elton can complain that I judged a sword by the person holding it.”

Rodrick’s mouth twitched. ”I suspect he will find more dramatic wording.”

The following morning, Rodrick left for Rainwood beneath a plain hood, carrying a medicine satchel, several blank ledgers, and enough coin to make FireStorm harder to surprise the next time someone purchased violence in the dark.
