ASOIAF: The Rise of House Ashenblade.

The central square filled before sunrise, but Arlan did not begin with sentence. The neutral marcher knight who had watched the boundary stood beneath the platform, as did the Rainwood septon, both millers, three Tauha captains, and Brienne. Lyman and the surviving Caron intermediary faced them under separate guard.

Wayne read the charges. Lyman had demanded exclusive water rights and three hundred gold dragons, threatened invasion after three days, refused measured arbitration, crossed FireStorm’s marked boundary with one hundred and fifty armed men, and ordered the surrender posts torn down. Thirty-seven of those men died; one hundred and thirteen were captured; none of FireStorm’s soldiers died.

Before Arlan answered, Lyman’s senior surviving captain asked leave to speak. ”The spring dispute is real. Lord Lyman carried a sealed promise that Lord Elton would mediate before Storm’s End. We believed FireStorm’s soldiers meant to take Tauha land after the fight.”

Rodrick placed Elton’s letter beside the old water agreement. ”The seal is genuine. The words promise mediation and a loan. They do not grant the spring or order an invasion.”

”Then Lord Lyman was deceived,” the captain said.

”He may have been,” Arlan replied. ”That is not the same as being compelled.”

The upper miller confirmed one day of lost access during the previous winter. The lower miller confirmed that armed Tauha men had crossed first. Neither account made the old grievance imaginary. Both agreed the water ran full when Lyman issued his demand.

The neutral knight described the three offers of measurement and arbitration. He had watched Lyman pass the boundary stone after the terms were read. Brienne described the surrender lane, including the Tauha retainer killed by a man trying to prevent him from using it. A captured captain admitted Lyman ordered the white cloth shot down.

Two common soldiers then spoke without their officers in the square. One said he believed FireStorm had already poisoned the spring because Lyman’s herald repeated it during the march. The other had seen both channels running and still advanced after a retainer threatened to cut down anyone who left formation. Their accounts did not excuse the crossing. They showed how command, fear, and a grievance older than either man had placed farmers behind new spears.

Lyman seized upon every uncertainty. Elton had promised recognition. His envoy had delivered steel and coin. Tauha’s dead required answer. Arlan had prepared soldiers before he crossed.

”Yes,” Arlan said. ”I prepared soldiers after you wrote that one hundred and fifty men would take my land. I also prepared a road by which those men could live.”

The surviving intermediary denied being a Caron agent. A token could be bought; coin passed through many hands; dyers stained half of Rainwood purple. Then three Tauha officers were brought separately. Each identified him as the man who corrected their march time. Two had heard him dictate the accusation meant for Storm’s End if FireStorm resisted. The third saw him ride toward the neutral observers when Lyman’s command failed.

No recovered order stated his purpose. His false name, role within the armed column, remount token, payment pattern, and converging witnesses established enough for judgment without pretending any one piece did all the work.

Arlan withdrew with Rodrick, Wayne, and the neutral knight before returning to the square. The consultation did not make Storm’s End’s future opinion certain. It made the reasoning visible to men who did not owe House Ashenblade obedience.

Lyman would hang. He had led the invasion, rejected a witnessed alternative, ordered men to close a surrender route, and continued after the grievance he claimed could have been measured in open water. Elton’s deception explained how the knife was sharpened; it did not move Lyman’s hand.

The Caron intermediary would die by the sword for entering under false identity, helping direct the invasion, and attempting to carry or silence the prepared accusation after the battle turned. The remaining Tauha prisoners received three years of labor in the iron workings under recorded terms rather than death. Their responsibility was not their lord’s, but neither were they released immediately into a conflict still unfolding.

Rodrick read the labor terms before sentence was carried out. Prisoners would receive food, shelter, treatment for injuries, one rest day in seven, and release after three years unless Storm’s End altered the judgment. Names, kin, and start dates would be copied to Tauha. Assault by an overseer could be reported before witnesses; escape or violence would bring a separate hearing rather than an added year spoken in anger. Some villagers objected to feeding invaders. Morton answered with the number of hands the mine required and the greater cost of guarding hungry men.

Lyman shouted that only Storm’s End could judge a hereditary lord, cursed Elton for buying him with land, and returned to pleading when he saw the rope. Arlan let him speak until the executioners brought him beneath the beam.

”Your quarrel and your blood do not erase the men you ordered across that stone,” Arlan said.

The trap opened. Lyman’s voice ended when the rope drew taut.

The intermediary held his chin high. ”House Caron will remember this.”

”It should remember the witnesses,” Arlan said.

One stroke of the hand-and-a-half sword carried out the sentence. Arlan cleaned the blade and sheathed it. He gave no speech over either body.

Lyman was prepared for return to Tauha rather than left on display. The prisoners received their labor terms by group, and the Black Armor Army returned to ordinary watches before noon. Judgment ended; custody and feeding one hundred and eleven labor prisoners did not.

Rodrick’s packet for Storm’s End contained the ultimatum, water marks, witnessed offers, boundary accounts, battlefield inventory, payment bundles, armory marks, stable entries, and testimony both for and against Lyman. Elton’s lawful letter went in as well. Nothing in the packet was called an invasion order because it was not one.

”And if Renly says you had no right to hang him?” Rodrick asked.

”Then he decides that with the cost in front of him.”

The raven left before noon. Arlan doubled no patrol merely to perform anger; Wayne shifted watches toward the roads the defeated force had exposed, and Cade assigned guards to prisoners without stripping the settlements. Any new attack would meet men awake, but FireStorm would not become empty fields surrounding a prison camp.

Stories reached Rainwood before the formal record. Some made Lyman a murdered petitioner; others claimed Black Armor killed hundreds. The neutral knight, septon, millers, captains, and surviving soldiers carried harder details in different directions. No single messenger owned the account.

Three days later, the south had not agreed whether Arlan’s judgment was lawful. It had agreed that ignoring FireStorm now required a decision.

Storm’s End answered first with acknowledgment, not approval. Renly’s clerk confirmed receipt of the raven and ordered every body, prisoner, seized object, and witness held available for inquiry. Arlan read the line twice. The executions could not be reversed; everything around them could still determine whether the act became marcher judgment or defiance.

He posted the order beside the prisoner roll and gave a copy to the neutral knight before the man rode home. Storm’s End’s scrutiny would arrive whether FireStorm welcomed it or not.
