ASOIAF: The Rise of House Ashenblade.

Cade distrusted any formation that looked flawless on a sand table. He had watched good infantry die because a commander loved a diagram more than the ground beneath it, so he tested Arlan’s remembered principles with a wagon, two sacks of grain, a medicine chest, and a wooden man weighted like a wounded soldier.

The fifty Black Armor recruits had to move the wagon and its load from the southern field to FireStorm’s gate before the third horn. Twenty lightly equipped trainees under Wayne could delay them with padded weapons, seize the wagon, or carry off either sack. Brienne judged disabling blows. Bor controlled the gate obstacle and had strict orders not to demonstrate what a heavy axe did to a practice shield.

”Your purpose is not to defeat Wayne,” Cade told the fifty. ”It is to bring what FireStorm needs through that gate. If you arrive without the medicine or the wounded, your beautiful victory can explain itself to the dead.”

The first attempt began well. Three ranks closed around the wagon, shields outward, spears in controlled gaps. Wayne’s skirmishers struck the front and recoiled. The formation held exactly as it had been taught.

It also crawled.

Wayne refused to attack the strongest face. He sent six men through wet ground around the left, where the full block could not turn without dragging the wagon wheel into a ditch. When the Black Armor front pivoted, four more trainees cut across the abandoned track, hooked one grain sack from the wagon, and ran.

The recruits chased three paces before their section leader stopped them. That saved the formation and lost the sack. Then Bor rolled a broken cart across the gate lane. The dense three ranks reached it with one horn remaining and no room to deploy. Men at the rear could not see why the front had stopped. A spear caught beneath a shield rim; the wagon pole turned sideways; the weighted casualty slipped into mud.

The third horn sounded while forty-eight men still stood together outside the wall.

”We held,” one recruit said.

Cade pointed to the abandoned grain and the wooden face in the mud. ”FireStorm starves with excellent discipline.”

He did not give them the answer. Ten-man sections argued beside the wagon while Rodrick recorded what each believed had failed. Some blamed the obstacle; others the pace, scouts, or the order to keep a single block. Arlan listened until a young file leader said the formation had protected itself after it stopped protecting the mission.

”There,” Cade said. ”Now we can teach something.”

On the second attempt, two sections moved ahead without the wagon and cleared the narrow places. A third guarded the load. A fourth remained far enough back to answer a flank, while the fifth carried the weighted casualty by litter instead of trusting it to the cart. They shared horn signals, not a single shape.

Wayne attacked the lead section, then sounded a false retreat with a voice from the hedgerow. The recognized horn gave no such command. The file leader ignored the shout and continued to the next marker. When padded arrows fell from the low wall, front shields rose while the wagon group passed beneath their cover.

The loose wheel failed halfway across the field. This time the soldiers did not gather around it. One section held Wayne at distance; two men reset the pin; another shifted grain into hands so the wagon could be abandoned if the repair took too long. The reserve waited until the light trainees committed to the medicine chest, then cut off their route without pursuing anyone who escaped.

At the gate, Bor’s cart blocked the lane again. The lead section did not try to push through. It opened a path on the rough slope, passed the litter first, and used the wagon itself to drag the obstacle far enough aside for the supplies. The movement looked untidy. It also put both sacks, the chest, the casualty, and forty-nine functional soldiers inside before the third horn.

The fiftieth sat outside holding a bruised knee. His section leader heard the horn, looked at the gate, and sent two men back. They crossed after the time had expired.

”Failure,” Cade said, pointing to the expired sand where the final grains had already fallen.

The leader nodded. ”Yes.”

”Correct decision.” Cade turned the glass over.

Rodrick wrote both things.

They repeated the exercise on a narrow track and a slope. Each ground required a different arrangement. On open field, the fifty kept a reserve; among walls they moved as files; under arrows they traded speed for cover. A heavy horse introduced late in the day nearly folded one section through mass alone, ending any belief that matched shields made infantry invulnerable.

The slope exposed a different weakness. Men at the lower edge raised shields too high against padded arrows and lost sight of the boots above them. Wayne’s trainees rolled two weighted barrels downhill. The first struck the line and opened three men; the second was turned into a rut after a rear soldier called the danger early. Cade moved the caller to the front on the next attempt so he would learn what a warning sounded like beneath impact rather than from safety.

On the narrow track, the medicine chest became heavier when Rodrick quietly filled its false bottom with stones. The carriers accused each other of tiring until one stopped and checked the load. Cade allowed the inspection and deducted the time, then asked why no one had weighed the chest before departure. The next company did so without prompting. A supply marked medicine still had axles, handles, and a weight that could change.

”A formation does not make danger disappear,” Arlan told them. ”It chooses where men will meet it. If the ground changes, the choice changes.”

Cade shortened signals that vanished in the wind and made each file practice after its leader was removed. Local round shields required wider spacing on broken earth than the shapes Arlan remembered. Every change that survived the field entered Rodrick’s record; every handsome idea that failed stayed crossed out.

At sunset, ten men could detach, recover a casualty, and rejoin without stopping the other forty. The formation kept moving around them.

Cade watched the wagon roll through the gate with both grain sacks still aboard. ”Westeros likes knights.”

”Westeros can continue liking them.”

”This teaches ordinary men to finish a task while knights are looking for someone to charge.”

Arlan watched the rear file turn for its last wounded man before the horn. ”That is the intention.”

At the debrief, each section placed its route on Rodrick’s board with string. The strands crossed where men had nearly collided and spread where Wayne stole the grain. Cade kept the board for the next morning. Memory favored the moment a soldier looked brave; string showed where the wagon, medicine, and casualty had actually gone.

Bor moved one peg to show where his cart had blocked the gate and made the section leaders explain how they would pass the same obstacle without knowing it waited. Three answers required more men than the company possessed. Cade erased them first.
