ASOIAF: The Rise of House Ashenblade.

The Rainwood factor kept his books in a loft above a dyer’s yard, where every stair smelled of wet wool and the vats stained a man’s hands before he touched them. By the time Rodrick and Brienne reached the posting inn, the violet-fingered stranger had gone. The stable boy’s description led to the yard; the factor’s frightened clerk led them upstairs.

They returned to FireStorm near noon with no prisoner and no signed order. Rodrick carried a copy of the narrow account book, three sheets copied under the clerk’s eye, and a square of linen darkened by the wash he had used. Brienne carried the certainty that the clerk would live long enough to testify.

”He tried to put the book in a stove,” she said.

”Lady Brienne persuaded him that smoke would be noticed.”

”I moved the stove.”

Rodrick set the account book before Arlan. Its ordinary entries concerned fodder, relay horses, lamp oil, and fees paid at three post stations. The figures alone proved little. A Rainwood factor could buy feed for any number of lawful travelers. What mattered was the rhythm: coin arrived in small sums from six different household accounts and left within a day of each new accusation appearing on a road.

The payment linked intermediaries, not Elton. Rodrick said so before anyone else could turn the pattern into a verdict.

The clerk had copied the pages because the original book belonged to the factor and Rainwood law would call its removal theft if the man returned with friendly officers. Brienne had brought the cooper from the neighboring yard and an inn servant to watch every line transferred. The clerk signed only what he had personally seen. He refused to identify the violet-handed man, then admitted after water and a locked door that he had never learned the name.

”He paid in silver cut from different mints,” the clerk said. ”He always counted by weight. He burned the paper wrappers afterward and told us the colors stained because his wife kept a dye shop.”

Rodrick placed three coins beside the copied entries. One bore a recent Storm’s End stag, another an older Reach rose, and the third a worn Lysene face. Mixed coin proved nothing about its first owner, but weight scratched beside each payment matched the clerk’s memory. The man had described a practice before seeing the book opened, giving Loras something more useful than a name guessed under Brienne’s shadow.

Morton entered the three weights in a new evidence ledger and returned the coins to separate cloth packets. The clerk marked each knot with his own thumbnail before Wayne sealed them. If the packets reached Storm’s End opened, the disturbed wax would show it; if they arrived intact, the odd mixture could be compared with whatever remained in the factor’s till.

”The third lord’s steward paid this factor,” Rodrick explained. ”The factor paid riders who carried Nightsong’s packets. That may mean the steward serves Elton. It may mean the factor used an honest payment to hide a dishonest one. The lord himself may know nothing.”

Arlan touched the line recording twenty-two casks. ”But this came from our third letter.”

A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

”Yes. The channel is proved. The command behind it is not.”

The copied packets showed how the false case had been built. One document used a seal copied from an old tax receipt; its lower edge spread too evenly because the carver had worked from a flat impression. Another imitated Morton’s quick hand but repeated the careful shape he used only in formal entries. The invented wagon deliveries crossed a flooded ford. A citation concerned a bridge judgment from before Robert’s reign.

There were also truths: the new spear racks, the eastern kiln shed, the number of guards normally posted at the north wall. Whoever assembled the accusations had combined observation with forgery so that exposing one lie would not discredit every page.

”Good work,” Rodrick said, almost grudgingly. ”The hand changes twice. The errors differ. One man gathered facts, another built the legal charge, and at least one copyist prepared the exhibits.”

Wayne looked at the pages. ”Can you show Renly they are false?”

”I can show him reasons to inspect them. A competent maester can test the ink and compare the hands. If I say more, Elton will call an expelled novice jealous of the Citadel and ask why anyone should trust my chain.”

Under heat, the final sheet had revealed writing beneath an innocent order for oats. Most of it had bled into brown threads. Rodrick’s wash recovered fragments rather than sentences: third bell, old mill, seven in silver, and farther down, separated by water damage, egg, old blood, and root and branch.

Morton’s hand tightened upon the back of a chair.

Arlan saw fear in him before the old steward lowered his eyes. Ser Edwyn’s papers, Lady Ellyn’s effects, and whatever House Ashenblade had carried from one generation to the next would need to be opened in private. Not here, and not while Robert Baratheon approached Storm’s End.

”Targaryen?” Wayne asked.

Rodrick removed his spectacles and polished a fleck from one lens. ”Possibly. The cipher resembles forms described in Lannister correspondence, but I have never examined an authenticated key. Old blood may refer to a lineage. Egg may be an object or a name. The surviving words do not tell us who wrote them, who was meant to read them, or whether the writer believed them.”

”Then they do not go into a public accusation,” Arlan said.

Morton looked up. Relief and worry crossed his face too quickly to separate. ”My lord—”

”You and I will speak later.”

The old man bowed his head.

Brienne pointed at the first fragments. ”The old mill. Do we know which one?”

Three stood between Rainwood and the king’s road. The account book showed fodder delivered near one of them every sixth day. Seven silver stags would be a small payment for conspiracy and a generous one for a courier. It was a meeting place and a sum, perhaps a schedule. No name survived beside it.

Arlan ordered the road watched, not seized. Anyone arrested at the mill could claim a lawful meeting and warn every other intermediary. Instead Wayne placed two men among charcoal burners above the track and a third with the miller’s cousins. They would count horses, faces, sacks, and directions. If coin changed hands, they would remember which purse supplied it.

Rodrick began three columns on a clean page. Beneath the first he wrote what the papers proved: FireStorm’s private detail had passed through the factor, and false accusations traveled with payments and relay horses. The second held strong inferences: the work served Elton’s coalition and drew upon Nightsong’s reach. The last contained unanswered questions, including the hidden fragments and the watcher on the western rise.

Wayne frowned at the three columns. ”So we know how the work moved, not who gave the first order.”

”It is also harder to destroy by burning one sheet,” Arlan answered.

Before sunset a watcher sent word from the mill. Two riders had arrived separately. One carried a Caron remount token; the other wore the third lord’s colors beneath a plain cloak. They exchanged a purse and a sealed packet, then rode in opposite directions.

The packet still had to be found. The network had ceased being invisible.
