ASOIAF: The Rise of House Ashenblade.

Arlan remained on one knee while the council chamber settled around him. Renly let the silence hold for a moment before speaking, ensuring that every southern lord present understood that what followed belonged to Storm’s End, not to a private bargain made in a corridor.

”Arlan Ashenblade, your house has held a marcher pass for generations,” Renly said. ”In recent months you have defended those lands, cleared raiders from roads under my peace, settled displaced people, restored production, and answered an armed incursion without carrying the war into another sworn holding.”

The praise was measured. Renly did not call Blackstone Canyon glorious and did not endorse Lyman’s execution; the decree concerned service and status, not a declaration that every Ashenblade choice had been perfect.

”House Ashenblade has until now held FireStorm as a minor landed-knight house within the southern hierarchy,” Renly continued. ”That arrangement has become a cause of disorder rather than stability.”

Elton’s head came up.

An attendant unrolled the new grant. Renly raised House Ashenblade into a hereditary lordly house directly sworn to Storm’s End, removing FireStorm from Nightsong’s ordinary jurisdiction. The grant also expanded its demesne westward into the Red Mountain foothills around Blackstone Creek, including the right to work mines, maintain workshops, and raise the household forces required to defend those lands.

The grant followed streams, ridges, and old boundary stones rather than a clean shape on parchment. Alistair read each marker: the split ash beside the western road, the ruined watch cairn above Blackstone Creek, the north face of the red ridge, and the shared spring explicitly excluded from sole possession. Two surveyors would walk the line before winter. Until then, neither FireStorm nor Nightsong could move a marker or collect a new due in the disputed strip.

Rights arrived with obligations. Arlan owed road maintenance through the pass, refuge for travelers during declared raids, a recorded muster when Storm’s End called, and customary taxes on trade not already exempted by the grant. Mine galleries had to remain within the new boundary. Timber could be cut for supports but not stripped from villages whose grazing rights predated the award. Renly had given him room to build, not empty land without people.

The chamber erupted into low conversation. The grant’s meaning was unmistakable. Arlan would no longer need Elton’s permission to develop FireStorm, and Nightsong could no longer pretend every Ashenblade mine, guard muster, or trade decision was an act committed by a subordinate tenant. The western grant also gave FireStorm legal control over Blackstone Creek and the surrounding foothills that had already become central to the dispute.

Renly waited until the room quieted. ”You will answer to Storm’s End for the peace of your lands, your levies, and your obligations. If you misuse that freedom, I will judge you myself.”

Arlan lowered his head. ”I understand, my lord.”

Elton said nothing. The fine had bruised him; this cut deeper. Blackstone Creek and the western foothills had been coveted by Nightsong for years, and direct Ashenblade tenure placed the land and its roads beyond his immediate reach.

The grant did not make FireStorm equal to Nightsong in wealth, age, or banners. It did something more dangerous to Elton’s old position: it made FireStorm legitimate without him.

Arlan accepted the parchment and the heavy seal prepared for House Ashenblade’s new status. ”I swear to hold these lands under Storm’s End, answer lawful summons, keep the King’s peace within my power, and defend the southern marches against those who would cross them in arms.”

The seal was bronze faced with silver, the burning sword cut deep enough to leave a clear mark through winter wax. It did not create House Ashenblade’s device; it gave Storm’s End an authorized impression against which future orders could be tested. Alistair pressed it beside the grant, compared the lines, and handed both to Arlan in view of the hall.

Morton would have to replace every old household stamp used on store orders and leases. Rodrick would notify merchants which seal remained valid during the change. A title spoken in one chamber would travel through carts, rents, patrol authority, and the next man who tried to present an order at a gate.

He did not promise impossible obedience or proclaim himself Renly’s creature before every lord in the chamber. The oath was feudal, public, and clear enough to bind both sides.

Renly nodded. ”Rise, Lord Arlan Ashenblade of FireStorm.”

The familiar title now carried greater legal weight. Arlan stood, and the lords watching him recalculated the south in the same silence with which merchants recalculated a price.

Elton finally met his gaze. There was no outburst, only the stillness of a man forced to watch an opponent receive protection he could not openly challenge. Arlan offered him no smile. Humiliation was most useful when nobody gave the injured party an excuse to call it provocation.

Renly had the conditions read after the elevation, so no one could mistake reward for pardon. The shared survey at the Tauha spring would continue. FireStorm’s labor sentences remained open to inspection, and the captured goods would be credited against assessed damages rather than treated as uncounted spoil. Any future noble captive had to be reported to Storm’s End within three days.

House Tauha retained its succession, lands, and right to petition over Lyman’s body and personal property. The western grant took no village that had sworn directly to Tauha before the battle. Captured horses and steel remained sealed until Alistair assessed food, burial, medical care, and damaged FireStorm property. If the goods exceeded that amount, the balance returned to Tauha. Victory did not turn every object on the losing side into Ashenblade wealth.

Renly also limited the new household force to defense of the grant, roads under his peace, and service when lawfully summoned. Pursuit across another lord’s land required urgent danger or leave. Arlan could train soldiers without Elton’s permission; he could not use direct fealty as permission to make private war.

”Direct fealty means direct judgment,” Renly said. ”Elton no longer stands between us when you obey. He will not stand between us when you answer.”

”Understood.”

Alistair and two southern lords sealed the grant as witnesses. One copy entered Storm’s End’s rolls; Arlan received the other with the new house seal. Nothing in the act made FireStorm equal to Nightsong in wealth, age, or banners. It gave Arlan lawful room to build and gave Renly an unobstructed road by which to restrain him.

When the council dismissed, Arlan left the chamber as Lord Ashenblade. The title was settled there. Whether the people of the enlarged holding accepted the order behind it would be answered at FireStorm.

Behind him, clerks rolled the boundary copy around a wooden core, packed the new seal in wool, and entered his oath beside Renly’s decree. Ahead waited surveyors, tenants, prisoners, smiths, and roads. The ceremony changed jurisdiction in a breath; governing what it granted would occupy every day after.

Arlan carried the parchment himself until the outer gate.

Only there did he entrust it to Alistair’s case.
