ASOIAF: The Rise of House Ashenblade.

The first surrendering men entered Brienne’s lane one at a time. She made each place his weapon on the stones, step past two shields, and kneel where a separate file could bind and count him. Within moments the line became ten men, then twenty. Every prisoner removed himself from Lyman’s strength without requiring another wound.

Cade rotated his front again. The file that had taken Lyman’s charge moved behind the quarry wall with cracked shields and trembling arms; fresh men replaced it. When Tauha soldiers struck the new front, they found no weakness inherited from the exhausted one.

Lyman tried to restore command by gathering banners. Wayne’s archers denied him both. One shaft cut the pole above his hand, another killed the last mounted horn blower, and a third struck the ground before a captain who had begun forcing villagers back into line. The captain looked at the warning, looked at the white corridor, and threw down his sword.

The two men Rodrick had marked behaved differently. One seized a Tauha banner and shouted that surrender meant execution. He tried to turn household retainers against the men walking toward Brienne, then drove his blade into the back of a soldier who lowered his spear.

Brienne left the mouth of the corridor only far enough to stop him. Her first cut bound his sword; the return opened his throat. She stepped back before the falling body could pull her into the fighting and ordered her file to keep the lane open.

The second stranger ran toward the western track, not away from FireStorm but toward the observers’ ridge. He carried a Caron remount token inside his glove and a purse divided into the same seven-stag payments found in the Rainwood factor’s accounts. No letter named his purpose. Bor’s men brought him down with a spear shaft behind the knees and held him alive when he tried to bite through his own tongue.

At the firm road, Tauha horsemen outside the barricade heard three incompatible commands: advance from a runner who had left before Cade’s rotation, withdraw from a captain now inside Brienne’s lane, and circle from Lyman, whose horn no longer existed. They did none quickly. Wayne moved archers to cover the gap, and ten riders dismounted rather than force horses across mud beneath aimed shafts.

The center ended last. Lyman promised gold, land, and pardon while the number of men near enough to hear him diminished. Cade advanced no farther than required to deny weapons. Bor reopened part of the western lane behind the surrender posts, giving soldiers trapped outside a visible route to quarter.

One group of Tauha household retainers charged instead. Black Armor shields took the first impact, yielded two paces, and let the attackers spend their momentum. Spears answered at legs, unguarded sides, and men still trying to drive forward. The fighting was brief and costly because the choice to surrender remained visible ten paces away.

When Lyman’s deputy dropped his sword, the last common soldiers followed. Lyman reached a horse and mounted. Cade’s reserve closed the route and took him from the saddle without killing him.

No cheer followed. The broken signals made any uncontrolled movement dangerous. Cade ordered weapons kicked into piles, officers separated, and every white-lane prisoner counted twice. Wayne held his archers until Bor confirmed that no armed group remained beyond the barricade.

Three men beneath a Tauha cart had not heard the surrender. One crawled out with a knife and froze when six shields turned toward him. Brienne spoke the terms again and pointed to the weapon pile. He dropped the blade. The other two dragged a wounded companion free and followed. Cade delayed the final count until searchers had checked every wagon, rut, and fold in the quarry wall.

The captured horses created their own danger. Two had broken reins, one carried an arrow in the neck, and several kicked at anyone wearing black. Tauha grooms were unbound one at a time to calm them beneath Wayne’s archers. Allowing prisoners to handle animals looked like trust; refusing their skill would leave injured horses loose among wounded men. Rodrick wrote each groom’s name before the ropes came off.

The dead lay where resistance had concentrated: among Lyman’s final charge, around the man who attacked surrendering soldiers, and near the first collision at Cade’s line. The count required time because no one guessed merely to produce a clean report.

Thirty-seven Tauha men were dead.

One hundred and thirteen were captured alive, including Lyman Tauha and the surviving Caron intermediary. Together they accounted for all one hundred and fifty who crossed the boundary.

Cade checked FireStorm’s files next. The man lost beneath the first shields had been pulled free with a bruised hip. Bor’s fallen soldier had a cut along the scalp. Armor bore dents, three shields had split at the rims, and men would carry bruises for days.

”No deaths,” Cade said.

Arlan looked at him. ”All fifty?”

”Alive.”

The murmur through the Black Armor ranks stopped when Cade raised one hand. The result had not come from a plan working untouched. A barricade axle had broken, the surrender signal had torn, and the horn had vanished in echoes. Bor changed the road, Brienne replaced the signal, Wayne broke Tauha’s, and Cade acted without waiting for orders he could no longer hear.

The absence of FireStorm dead belonged to those adaptations and to the corridor that removed one hundred and thirteen enemies from the fight. It did not make any man proof against the next spear.

Arlan walked the line before accepting Cade’s report. One shield carried five dents and blood that belonged to the man who had struck it. Another soldier’s hands shook too badly to untie his chin strap, so the file mate beside him did it without comment. The two injured men were already seated near the healers, angry at being kept from work. No corpse in black lay beneath a cloak, but every face showed how easily the count might have differed.

Among the prisoners, surrender produced no single emotion. Some stared at Lyman with hatred, some at FireStorm’s weapons with fear, and several asked whether the white-lane promise still held now that battle was over. Brienne repeated that quarter meant life and treatment, not immediate freedom. She did not promise what judgment Arlan would impose. Men who had trusted one clear term were given another.

Cade received every file report before kneeling before Arlan. Satisfaction showed through the dust on his face, but so did exhaustion.

”My lord, all one hundred and fifty are accounted for. Thirty-seven dead. One hundred and thirteen taken. We did not lose a man.”

Around them, Black Armor soldiers were already carrying Tauha wounded toward the white posts and using the unbroken barricade as a litter rack. Their first field victory had proved more than the strength of a shield line. The unit had kept its purpose after the road, signals, and plan stopped behaving as expected.

Only after the last weapon pile was tied did Cade allow the files to sit. Water passed from the rear forward so the least visible men received it first. No soldier crossed the quarry to take a trophy. Wayne posted two guards over the dead and a third over Lyman’s fallen banner until the neutral knight finished his record.
