ASOIAF: The Rise of House Ashenblade.

The first letter went to the lord whose coastwise trade would suffer most if Renly’s roads became a battlefield. It offered no friendship. It stated that FireStorm would submit its books and stores to an officer of Storm’s End and asked whether the recipient would do the same. In its last paragraph Rodrick mentioned that the inspection could begin beside the east kiln at noon.

The second went to the house that had once disputed an iron claim with Nightsong. It asked why Elton should be trusted to distribute another man’s mine after keeping the first. Its harmless detail placed the same inspection at the west storehouse before sunset.

Four more letters carried four more small differences: twenty-two casks ready for counting instead of twenty; a grey gelding assigned to the Storm’s End messenger instead of a bay; the north postern used for his departure instead of the main gate; two captured raiders available as witnesses instead of three. None altered the accusation or promised a fact that could condemn anyone. Each was distinct enough to recognize if it returned.

Morton read all six. ”If one of these lords shows Elton his letter, you learn he showed Elton his letter.”

”Not necessarily,” Rodrick said. ”A lord’s steward may sell it. A squire may repeat it over ale. A messenger may be searched. We learn a channel, not a culprit.”

Arlan looked at him. ”Inference, probability, proof.”

”I remember.”

The arguments differed as much as the bait. One lord received a reminder that Robert would soon sit at Renly’s table. Another saw the cost of feeding men through autumn. The weakest houses were offered future access to lawful lots of Red Sun Flame and clear glass if they withdrew to neutrality, but no exclusive right and no quantity the single kiln could not supply. Elton would take the political gain if they won; their sons would take the arrows.

”Bribery,” Morton said.

”A direction offered to appetite.” Rodrick adjusted his spectacles.

Morton snorted. ”Bribery written by a man who owns spectacles.”

Six riders left by six routes. None wore Ashenblade colors past the outer farms, and each knew only his own destination. Wayne placed watchers where the roads divided but gave them strict orders to count riders, not stop them. Brienne walked the wall while they waited and made the sentries eat in turns. Men stared poorly on empty stomachs and imagined movement where none existed.

Each messenger carried an open copy for the first checkpoint and a sealed copy beneath his shirt. If one was stopped, he was to surrender the open letter, remember the badge and face of the man who took it, and return by another road. No rider carried the list of differences. Rodrick kept that beside Morton in the hall, where a chalk mark recorded departure, expected relay, and return.

The precautions cost time. One lord lay only four miles away, but his rider went south to a shepherd’s track before turning west so that Elton’s watchers could not follow every message from the gate. Another letter traveled with a woman carrying eggs to her married daughter, its final mile entrusted to a village reeve who had no reason to look like a courier. Arlan would not have used either route for a secret whose discovery could kill them. The facts inside were harmless; the direction of their travel was what mattered.

Elton’s camp noticed movement anyway. Two Caron riders shadowed the northern messenger and lost him among timber carts. Men at the eastern tents began tightening saddle girths before any answer returned, which told Wayne that at least one allied captain expected orders to change quickly. The guards watched hands, animals, and wagons for preparations the banners did not reveal.

The returning riders entered through different gates and spoke first to Morton, not to one another. One had been offered ale by a Caron squire who asked which lord received which promise. Another found the bridge watched but was allowed across after showing the open copy. Rodrick wrote both encounters beside their routes, then made the men eat before Brienne questioned them again. Weariness altered small details; the same remembered badge after bread mattered more than a confident answer forced from an empty stomach.

The first answer came in canvas rather than ink. Before midday one camp lowered its banner, struck its tents, and rolled west without approaching FireStorm. Its lord had received the letter about coastal trade. A second camp packed an hour later, though its knights remained long enough to argue beneath Elton’s black nightingales. More than two hundred men eventually took the road away.

No cheer rose from FireStorm. Arlan had forbidden it. A retreating lord might accept prudence; a publicly humiliated one might purchase honor with blood.

Near dusk, the remaining camps changed shape. Horse lines moved closer to the road. Cooking fires were built shallow, suitable for one night. Elton’s central tents remained, and mounted men carried sealed packets toward Rainwood and Storm’s End.

One of Rodrick’s watchers returned after dark with a stable boy from a posting inn. The boy held his cap in both hands and smelled of horses. He had not stolen a message. He had heard two of Elton’s riders berating the innkeeper because twenty-two casks of supposedly stolen liquor were to be named in the charge, and the innkeeper’s daughter had corrected their arithmetic after seeing the draft left beside a cup.

”Twenty-two,” Morton said. Only the third letter carried that number.

The stable boy also remembered a man in a brown cloak who met the riders by the feed shed. He wore no badge. One hand was stained violet to the nails, like a dyer or a man who handled certain sealing powders, and he sent a smaller packet south by a different horse.

Wayne asked, ”Whose letter was the third?”

Rodrick named the house. ”That tells us where the leak passed. It does not tell us whether the lord ordered it.”

Arlan gave the stable boy food, coin, and a place among the grooms until the roads were safe. Then he turned the third letter over. The recipient depended upon a Rainwood factor to buy fodder and collect rents. Violet-stained hands narrowed the path, but only if the stain meant what Rodrick suspected.

”Murex and iron salts,” the former maester said. ”Used in some inks that disappear beneath heat and return under a wash. Used by dyers as well.”

”Can you find the man?” Brienne asked.

”I can find the inn, the factor, and the next packet. The man may prove to be none of them.”

She rested a hand on the greatsword at her back. ”Then I will make certain you return to explain the difference.”

Rodrick adjusted his spectacles. ”That is unexpectedly reassuring.”

They left before dawn with five guards and merchant cloaks folded behind their saddles. Beyond the western window, another line of Elton’s fires had gone dark, but three riders were already carrying his accusation south. The army in the fields had begun to thin. The army made of words was still moving.
