Quick Transmigration: The Cannon Fodder's Comeback in the Era Tales

Chapter 392: Chapter 392: Unfit Foster Mother 33

”Brother Lei, let’s go work part-time on the weekends. I heard there’s a fried chicken shop near the school that pays ten yuan an hour. If we work a few hours every weekend, we can increase our monthly living expenses by more than a thousand yuan.”

Sure enough, those who’ve lived longer have more ways than Fan Lei, who’s somewhat of a drifter.

Fan Lei didn’t want to work, but life with no money in his pocket was tough.

Although his family was local, their situation was bad. He was raised by his grandparents after losing both parents at a young age. His grandparents lived on their pensions, so he didn’t get much pocket money.

Fan Lei agreed to work on the weekends.

In the blink of an eye, the weekend arrived. Wang Xiaoyan finished breakfast and went early to the fried chicken shop they had already contacted.

She thought they would earn two hundred yuan today by working together, but it was past noon when she finally saw Fan Lei enter the shop.

Wang Xiaoyan quickly put down her work, ran over, and questioned, ”Brother Lei, why are you just getting here? We agreed to start at nine in the morning. Look, it’s almost one o’clock now.”

Fan Lei looked impatient, ”Some of my buddies called me for something. I couldn’t ignore them. But see, I’m here now. If I work the afternoon, I can still make a few dozen yuan.”

However, after working for just an hour, a young guy came looking for him.

Shortly after, Fan Lei went to the boss to settle up and left.

He didn’t even say a word to Wang Xiaoyan.

By three in the afternoon, the shop was quiet, and Wang Xiaoyan, exhausted, sat on a chair, intending to ask Fan Lei to buy her a drink, but after searching around, she couldn’t find him.

Only when she asked carefully did she find out Fan Lei had left earlier.

The boss sarcastically remarked, ”Wang Xiaoyan, your boyfriend doesn’t look like someone who works. You have to point to make him move, and he’s not quick at all. Don’t let him come again. I can’t just give away wages in my shop.”

Wang Xiaoyan’s face flushed and paled alternately.

But Wang Xiaoyan persisted until ten at night.

Except for a half-hour break for lunch, she worked twelve and a half hours. The boss, seeing how hardworking and diligent she was, paid her for thirteen hours.

Holding one hundred and thirty yuan, Wang Xiaoyan was exhausted yet smiling, her legs trembling with fatigue, but her heart brimming with excitement.

In the evening, Yuan Chun handed over one hundred yuan to Wang Xiaoyan, ”Xiao Yan, here’s your pocket money for next week. Keep it safe.”

Wang Xiaoyan gritted her teeth and said, ”Auntie, I’m in high school now and need a lot of study materials. One hundred yuan isn’t enough. Could you give me an extra hundred?”

Wang Xiaoyan didn’t dare to ask for an extra three or five hundred as Fan Lei suggested. She decided to take it step by step. If her aunt agreed this time, she would ask for another hundred next time.

Yuan Chun glanced at her with a half-smile, seemingly seeing through her thoughts, ”Xiao Yan, do you know why I only give you one hundred yuan a week as pocket money? It’s because I talked to your teachers and learned that one hundred yuan is enough to buy study materials. So, if you want extra money, that’s fine, but you must write me a promissory note. When you’re working and earning money someday, you’ll have to pay me back. After all, I promised to support your studies, not your lavish spending.”

”I don’t,” Wang Xiaoyan retorted, ”I’m already very frugal with my spending. I don’t dare buy anything. The money you give me is all spent on study materials.”

”Auntie, you have so much money. Why can’t you give me just a little more, just one hundred? Even if I’m not your foster daughter, I’m still your niece.”
